Battleloot Adventure Looks All Kinds of Neat

When most people see or hear the name Digital Tales, they most likely associate it with Ducati Challenge for iOS. That, or they can click those links to see what I’m talking about because they also might be totally lost at this point. Regardless, there’s going to be a new iPhone/iPad game for folks to think about when their name comes up: Battleloot Adventure.

Aside from just being an awesome name to begin with, it’s looking like a pretty awesome game to boot. Players get to build and manage their own band of fantasy archetypes as they wander throughout “Kameloot” (ha!) and the surrounding countryside. Each adventurer has their own abilities and gain experience individually. Similarly, lots of gear can be found/earned and thrown on them for various bonuses. But while I’m admittedly a sucker for customization options (party, character, skill or otherwise) and I’m really digging the stylish cartoon visuals, I’m really intrigued by the combat system which looks like a hybrid of traditional turn-based RPG trappings and reflex-based arcade action. Tapping characters and enemies to select and attack respectively is relatively standard, but I’m curious to see how the more “twitchy” actions like assists (tap a second character while attacking) and blocking (tap the targeted character during an enemy’s attack) pan out.

There don’t seem to be any specifics regarding price just yet, but Battleloot Adventure is set to release on the App Store in February. It’s a few months off, but I’m certainly looking forward to it.

Get into the Spirit Hands (and Eyes) Free with Tales2Go – Happy Holidays

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. Ah, mid-November. The time of year when everyone starts buzzing about gift exchanges, menorahs, fat guys in red suits and all manner of “tidings.” Yessir, nothing like getting the holiday into full-swing before December. Suffice it to say, I’m personally not very thrilled with the practice of jumping the gun. But just because I’m morally opposed to shoving holiday cheer down the throats of the masses well over five weeks too early doesn’t mean I’m against general preparations. And what better way to prepare for the inevitable and lengthy trip to a distant relative’s house for a seasonal meal then to have an assortment of topical audiobooks on-hand?

Tales2Go is a fairly popular subscription-based (1,600+ books and counting) kids audiobook app in its own right, but Tales2Go – Happy Holidays is something a little different. This is a stand-alone app, with no subscription fee needed to access the 20 different stories contained within. These include The Night Before Christmas, A Christmas Carol, The Gift of the Magi (read by Jim Weiss), The Story of Hanukkah (read by Joel Ben Izzy) and many, many more.

Tales2Go – Happy Hoidays is already available, and all of these audiobooks can be had for a total of $0.99. That’s one dollar for 20 audiobooks. It might seem a tad too soon for this kind of stuff, but it couldn’t hurt to be ready once it’s time to jump in the car and drive 14 hours to grandma’s house.

Messaging Client ICQ Comes To iPhone

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. It’s been a while since I regularly used my ICQ account for instant messenging but the prospect of a newly revamped, official app for it makes it all the more appealing.

As part of its 3.0 update, ICQ Messenger allows its users to chat with all their phone, ICQ, Facebook, GoogleTalk, AIM and Mail.ru contacts, all from the one app. All that’s needed is a mobile phone number to join and login. It even automatically finds phone contacts already in the network, making it all the easier to send free messages.

Threaded messaging and history support has been added meaning it’s as easy to consult what’s just been said as it is with any conventional SMS message. A new and easy to view contact list also ensures that ICQ feels integrated into the rest of the iOS experience making it an ideal way to chat with friends for free.

Easy to use, ICQ can be accessed simultaneously from any platform such as online, via PC or phone. Push notifications mean that the user is always available for chat if they so wish, plus there’s social feed updates available from Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr.

For the ICQ user of old, this may well be an ideal entry point to the already busy world of messaging clients.

It’s out now and it’s a free app.

Favorite Four Apps for Black Friday

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. In order to provide a sustainable, best of the breed RSS to Email experience, we've chosen to keep this as a paid subscription service. If you are satisfied with your free trial, please sign-up today. Subscriptions without a plan would soon be removed. Thank you!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Families gather, feast, celebrate and then get ready for a Black Friday shopping bonanza. The hottest deals mean the biggest crowds will be mobbing stores. With this celebration of conspicuous consumption putting huge pressure on holiday shoppers in a tough economy, how does one find the very best deals? Well, an iPhone loaded with the right apps can make things a lot easier. This week we look at our four favorites for saving time and money.

TGI Black Friday

Powered by two major shopping resources, TGIblackfriday.com and DealCatcher.com, TGI Black Friday is the go-to app for finding the best bargains from the biggest chains like Walmart, Kohls, Best Buy, Target, Old Navy and far too many more to list. The updates come fast and furious and users can see all the Black Friday deals well before they bulk up the morning paper. Push notifications alert shoppers to new deals, users can compare prices and share finds on Facebook and Twitter.

Red Laser

Finding good deals is awesome. Finding great ones is even better. One thing brick and mortar retailers are worried most about this year is what impact mobile devices will have, even in the check out line. Price-matching offers used to be taken up by only a few, but now with bar code scanners, shoppers can quickly scan the items unique product number and Red Laser will find them all the competing offers, many of which are online. That means while standing in a three-hour check-out queue one can just pop out an iPhone, find a better deal online and have it paid for and on its way before they move forward a single inch.

Black Friday App

Black Friday App provides the same basic features as TGI Black Friday, and many of the stores and deals are the same, but there are retailers one app carries that the other doesn’t. This app doesn’t just look for deals in physical stores, but online-only bargains, too, so consider it another tool in the arsenal.

TGI Cyber Monday

Just as in-store bargains are selling out, online retailers pick up the slack. The new mega-shopping day has become known as Cyber Monday. TGI Cyber Monday, from the same folks as TGI Black Friday, again helps consumers sort through the best deals – this time from all the major online retailers.

Social Networking For Couples From Cupple

Having been in a long distance relationship, I know how tough it is to maintain regular contact and intimacy with a significant other. It’s apps like Cupple that could go some way to ensuring that couples always feel close to each other.

Cupple is a private social networking app aimed specifically at two people in a relationship. It allows users to share various details just between the two of them such as galleries of photos, private messages and even locations so that each person knows where the other person is. In each case, images or notes can be added for the personal touch.

The key thing is that it encourages intimacy. It’s the kind of app that’s particularly ideal for the couple who have to frequently travel for work but still want to keep in regular contact, even if it’s simply to say they saw something and thought of the other person.

Cupple is a free to download app and is available now.

Bag It! HD Review

Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: STRATEGIC STACKING
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Get all the groceries into the bag and don’t let them get smashed.

Developer: Hidden Variable Studios

Price: $0.99
Version Reviewed: 1.2
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 3GS

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.69 out of 5 stars

Not every trip to the grocery store ends with a thrillingly strategic bag stuffing session. Getting tons of groceries into a tiny paper bag may not seem like the best way to spend some free time, but Bag It! HD makes bagging food more fun than it has any right to be.

Bag It! HD takes the menial task of bagging groceries and turns it into an entertaining puzzle game where players must figure out how to fit different grocery items into a paper sack while limiting the amount of items that get crushed or broken. In each of the game’s levels, a different assortment of grocery items are brought to the player via a conveyer belt (much like in a real grocery store) and the player must fit these items into the bag in the same general order in which they appear. Sometimes the challenge comes from stacking the items so that they won’t break, other times the challenge is just to find a way to fit all of the items in the bag at all.

Each item in the game has its own weight and stacking them accordingly will save players from needlessly crushing other items. Items can also be dropped from varying heights, so players must be conscious of dropping items from too high and having them break from the fall. Items can also be rotated and bagged in any orientation. Once the bag is packed the items needs to survive and few moments as they shift in the bad while the player tilts the device to help them all settle in. Add to all these options the crazy and unique combos that come from placing items close to one another and players will need to take a much more strategic approach to bagging groceries here than they might on a normal Saturday afternoon trip to the store.

The animated grocery items are cute and the faces they make when they are happy, falling, or scared of getting crushed are great. The gameplay is varied, thanks to the many different types of items to bag and players will have a challenging time completing all the game’s levels. Bag It! HD is a nice, quirky little departure form the stacking puzzle norm.

Wizard Ops Review

By
on November 23rd, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: HE'S ON FIRE
iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad

Control a Fire Wizard in an attempt to free your brethren.

Developer: Phyken Media
Price: $0.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPad

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.88 out of 5 stars

The story in shoot'em up Wizard Ops starts off fairly cheerful. Four Wizards, each with the power to control an element of nature, protect a vast kingdom ruled by a King and Queen, bringing about peace and prosperity. As well as protectors to the kingdom, they also watch over the Princess, keeping her out of harm's way.

Alas, tragedy strikes and the Queen is killed while dabbling in magic. Distraught, the King forbids any further use of magic, and locks the Wizards away. However, as time passes the situation in the kingdom worsens, and the Wizards are now needed once again to battle the Mad Maker and stop him from kidnapping the princess.

Wizard Ops sees the player control the Fire Wizard throughout the duration of the game. Rather than follow the 'left to right' shoot'em up level template used in games such as Metal Slug, Wizard Ops uses a system similar to Space Harrier, which sees the Wizard shoot into the screen.

The controls couldn't be simpler. The screen has a designated area at the bottom, and to move the Wizard left and right all the player has to do is swipe their finger in the corresponding direction. Doing this also triggers off weapons, which auto-fire, and to control the targeting reticule all the player has to do is swipe up or down. It's very responsive.

The Wizard can equip two weapons at a time from a choice of 18. These can be purchased from the shop using coins dropped by enemies, although with some the player first needs to find their plans scattered about levels. There's some good variety on offer, bearing in mind the fire nature of the character, allowing for some short range/long range strategies.

Graphically Wizard Ops looks great, chucking about a lot of characters on-screen at any one time. The downside is that occasionally the frame-rate dips and stutters, although not to the point where it ruins the game. Michael Winslow (of Police Academy fame) was also brought on board to do the sound effects.

The main downside of Wizard Ops is just how easy it is. I blasted through the six levels in not much over half an hour, and there wasn't much incentive to return as the game is very generous with coins, therefore I could afford all the weapons I wanted to purchase. It's been made very clear this is just the first episode, but a bit more challenge would have been good.

Overall Wizard Ops is an enjoyable experience, with a solid control scheme. Here's hoping the next installment offers a bit more of a challenge.
