Blackberry Tutorial: How to install OTA themes

How to install an OTA download through your desktop?
Well, it's a bit tricky but once you know how to do it, it's almost as easy as installing a normal desktop installer download…

First of all, you will need to make sure that all downloaded OTA files are moved on the blackberries device memory or memory card.

Its easy to put it on the memory card, just connect the blackberry to your computer, enter the mass storage password on the blackberry when asked for and your memory card will pop-up on your computer as if it was a normal memory stick.

If you want to put the download in the device memory, you will need to have the desktop manager installed. When your desktop manager is booted you can go to the "media manager" and browse to the device memory under "my devices" make sure that the system is set to allow all files to be imported in the device memory.

Once you have uploaded all COD and JAD files you can disconnect the blackberry from the computer.

Now open the media application on the blackberry, and press the left button next to the trackball to open the full menu. Here you will need to click "explore". Now browse to the location where your OTA download is installed.
Once you've located the jad and cod files, select the JAD file (it should be only 1 file) and click "open". Now you will see the details about this file on your blackberry such as name, version and vendor. Here you will need to select the "download" button on the bottom of the screen. Once the application is downloaded you will be able to install or use the application.

You are now ready to use your blackberry OTA installation.

Ever wonder how to break the ice with people nearby? Why not use an app like Yakaround?

Yakaround is a chat room app with one crucial difference to many others – it enables people to chat to others nearby to them. Proximity plays a big part in Yakaround enabling people to get to know each other through the app rather than having to approach random strangers. It might sound a little unusual. However in a world where people are increasingly compartmentalized and find it difficult to get to know new people, Yakaround could be a great way of learning something about others in a non threatening environment.

Users can also use Yakaround to learn what’s going on around them potentially making it a great app to find out about events going on in the local area.

Separate chatrooms have been set up to cover people wanting to talk about places, events or subjects meaning users should be guaranteed to find someone to chat to especially in areas with high concentrations of people.

Currently Yakaround is only available in the US with plans to spread to other English-speaking countries soon.

It’s a free download for all iOS devices.

Flighttest: A New Aviation Magazine App

Flying is something I very rarely get to experience but that doesn’t stop me being interested in the field thanks to having a father fascinated by all things aviation related. I’ll probably never get to experience many of the most impressive aircraft but that’s exactly where apps like Flighttest help to get me as close as possible.

Flighttest provides a collection of flight tests that have been carried out thus putting users into the cockpits of 10 aircraft including a particularly fascinating insight into the Space Shuttle at the end of its 30 year career.

The app features articles written by expert test pilots, pictures from numerous award winning photographers and exclusive videos and interviews all about aviation and flight. Over 250 photos are available through the app as well as nearly 40 minutes of video providing a great package of information for the aviation fan

Aircraft featured cover the likes of the Mustang jet, the Piper Super Cub, the R66 turbine helicopter, Piper PA-28 and the aerobatic plane the XtremeAir Sbach342. It’s a veritable feast of aircraft with even a feature looking at solo gliding in a weekend. A cockpit guide to the Space Shuttle also features along with the ability to see inside the control center for it. Such information has been provided by former Space Shuttle pilot, Hoot Gibson. Returning to more Earthly based aircraft, there’s also a feature on how to land on a glacier which is particularly fascinating considering the difficulties that come with such a surface.

The quality of the features is pretty impressive with visuals also being attractive and appealing. Videos are of a similar quality with the ability to view in either landscape or portrait mode without any detriment to the standard. It all makes for a great package for the aviation fan.

Flighttest is initially a free download with issues costing $2.99. Hopefully there will be many new issues arriving on the app store shortly.

Walking Motivation Courtesy Of Arookoo

Walking is a great way of exercising but it’s also a much underrated form of exercise. It’s easy to do requiring no extra equipment and sometimes not even any extra time – get off the bus a stop early, go for a walk with your kids in the evening or at weekends – it’ll all help. Studies show that walking for between 20-40 minutes a day can extend lifespan by up to 5 years and if nothing else, it’s enjoyable and relaxing.

There are numerous apps out there to help walkers keep track of their movements and progress but Arookoo, a new walking app, aims to make walking into a fun game, too.

The app keeps players motivated by giving them motivational walking challenges and GPS based scavenger hunts. There’s even a form of scrabble game that’s a daily team challenge amongst friends. Everyone loves to be rewarded, so a series of achievements and stars also help motivate walkers into trying that bit harder.

Arookoo, the Japanese for ‘to walk’, is available in two forms. The free version is quite capable but for the price of a $2.99 in-app purchase, users can also view how many calories they’ve burned, distance walked and a few other bits and pieces too.

Arookoo is available now.

More on iOS as the Gaming Console of the Future – Former Sony Boss Weighs In

As I mentioned in a previous editorial, I believe that AirPlay Mirroring could be the way that Apple enters the home game console market. AirPlay Mirroring was barely mentioned as an iOS 5 feature at the most recent keynote, but it has the potential to make the biggest change in how we think of iOS.

As a quick reminder, AirPlay mirroring will allow your iPad 2 to transmit wirelessly your iPad screen to your TV via a connected Apple TV. Anything you see on your iPad will be mirrored on your TV. This includes any animations, interactions, apps, movies, photos, and most importantly, games. It’s not just for images, it’s the full iPad experience mirrored to your TV.

As the video below shows, AirPlay Mirroring just works with current iOS applications that are enabled for teathered HDMI output using the adapter for iPad 2. And it works very well for an early beta. There are some things that need streamlining, but it’s very impressive for a beta.

A huge thanks for Trevor at Apple’n'Apps for this video. It does a great job of showing the potential. After thinking about AirPlay Mirroring I was concerned that there would be considerable lag as the video was compressed and transmitted to the Apple TV. As we can see from the demo, lag seem to be fairly well mitigated and the responsiveness seems good.

We can also see that if games are developed like Real Racing 2 HD, they can provide full screen output on your TV, not just the 1024×768 window that you will see otherwise. Real Racing 2 HD looks absolutely amazing full screen on a TV. And I think this is just the beginning of what we will see. With this system, Apple is in a position to own the home console gaming market. And they are well on their way to owning the mobile market already with 200 million devices out there, they already overshadow even Nintendo and the DS.

And it looks like I’m not the only person to believe Apple is the future for gaming. Phil Harrison, former Sony boss believes that if current growth levels continue, Apple is in a position to be entire gaming industry within 10 years. In a recent interview with Edge Phil Harrison states:

At this trajectory, if you extrapolate the market-share gains that they are making, forward for ten years – if they carry on unrestrained in their growth, then there's a pretty good chance that Apple will be the games industry.

In the proliferation of devices – you've got iPhones, iPads, iPods, which are all part of the same ecosystem; the speed at which Apple sold 15 million iPads is phenomenal. And the number one activity on an iPad, according to some reports, is games, and I think that will only continue.

As the tradition console gaming companies have struggled to adapt to a more casual gaming market and even electronic delivery, Apple has set the bar. Apple seems to be hitting every point spot on, putting them in line to lead the gaming industry in the near future. And this upset of the current gaming leaders can not be underestimated — it’s a huge shift. The story continues and I’m sure we’ll be bringing you more soon.

The update to Flash Builder and Flex that allows developers to create mobile apps for iOS, Android, and even Playbook, has been in beta for a while now. You may remember there was even a bit of a brouhaha over it. But all that is behind us now, and Adobe have officially released the updated application development environments.

What this allows developers to do is use existing code for Flash and Flex applications, traditionally delivered via the web, to create mobile applications. If you develop your Flash/Flex application in the proper way this can be a huge time saving when targeting multiple platforms.

For more information on how to upgrade and what exactly this means for Flash Builder and Flex, take a look at the Adobe Flash Platform Blog for the details, links, and videos.

EA Mobile Studio 8 lb. Gorilla Re-Surfaces — This Time Throwing Out a Freemium Game

EA made a fairly big PR push, by EA Mobile standards, when their casual game studio 8 lb. Gorilla launched in July of 2009. The goal of the studio at that time was to produce a casual game every month. Unfortunately, in spite of the fairly good showing with their first game out of the game, the simple, casual game Zombies and Me, 8 lb. Gorilla disappeared without a trace after just one game.

Over the following nearly 2 years I asked everyone I met from EA Mobile about 8 lb. Gorilla. No one knew what happened to the tiny ape. They seem to have just disappeared. That was until June 16th of this year, nearly 2 years later, when their second release came out.

EA has released Ghost Harvest, from the 8 lb. Gorilla studio. This is the first foray into the freemium space on iOS for EAand 8 lb. Gorilla are now the studio leading that push for EA. Speaking to others in the industry, everyone knew it freemium games were coming form EA, they just didn’t know when or how it would appear.

Ghost Harvest is a fairly standard farming type game though told from a very different angle. In this one you harvest ghosts from graves (crops from fields) in your graveyard (farm) while building up XP and buying graves and dead bodies to fill them. It’s an oddly morbid game for EA — where you plant dead bodies and wait for their spirits to mature to the point that you can harvest them. Ghost Harvest is a free ad supported game, just like all the others in the style, with incentivized offerings from Tapjoy thrown in too. The one twist on the standard model is that there is a very simplified Plants vs. Zombies style defense game tacked on.

Overall the game seems rushed. Obviously 8 lb. Gorilla weren’t spending two years on it. There’s a frighteningly low animation cell count — everything moves chunkily — and non-retina level graphics are just below par these days. We know EA can do much better than this, perhaps this is just a feeler in the category. And is it just me or does the 8 lb. Gorilla logo look like a blue Donkey Kong?

Chillingo Release Peter Packer And Ewe Doodle

iOS game developer giant Chillingo has just released some more potential hits in the form of Peter Packer and Ewe Doodle, as well a large update for Storm in a Teacup.

Peter Packer comes in separate iPhone and iPad versions. The idea is simple yet addictive. Players must fling the packages into the corresponding parcel chutes as quickly as possible. Each package is a different shape so much like the wooden block games that toddlers play, you can’t put a square peg/package in a round hole.

There’s three different modes fo play to Peter Packer with Time Trial, Classic and the intriguingly titled Quest mode to entertain. Peter Packer looks set to be a great casual time waster.

It’s priced at $0.99 for the iPhone variety or $1.99 for the iPad edition.

Check out the trailer below.

Ewe Doodle offers a cutesy title that belies a quite dark yet fun game. Players must keep the sheep from becoming mutton by dragging or pointing the sheep to safety. A series of power ups and different enemy types keep things feeling fresh throughout. Predictably with a name like that, Ewe Doodle looks a lot like other doodle games and it’s a charm that works well.

Ewe Doodle is also priced at $0.99 and there’s a charming trailer to check out below.

For fans of Storm in a Teacup (Jason enjoyed it), there’s also been a large update. Besides the new icon for the app store (yes, really!), there’s also the addition of ten new bonus levels that unlock after level 20 and offer new features such as Gravity Flip. There’s also a new Super Tough Challenge mode that offers players the chance to play the original levels with no checkpoints and tougher enemies. Players can also now customize Storm with new outfits, hairstyles and colored trails.

The update is available now for existing owners and the app is priced at $0.99 for an universal version.

dream:scape Review

By
Rob Rich on June 20th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: HAUNTING
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

dream:scape isn’t so much a game as an interactive narrative. One that may be familiar and simple, but will also tug pretty hard on those heartstrings.

Developer: speedbump studios
Price: $1.99
Version: 1.2
App Reviewed on: iPhone 3GS
Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 3.25 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.31 out of 5 stars

An old man named Wilson has been in some kind of accident that’s left him brain-dead. His consciousness now exists purely in the dream:scape; a kind of purgatory between life and death in which he’ll have to recover important memories before he can move on. Memories that he may not want and are better left forgotten.

It’s bound to be mistaken for some kind of first-person adventure game, but while dream:scape does share a few similarities with the genre it’s really more of an interactive narrative. Think of it as a kind of short story told via simple exploration and “find the object” puzzle solving. It’s less about playing and more about learning Wilson’s story. Without good writing and voice acting such a concept would be doomed to failure, but dream:scape has both and pulls it off with the kind of subtle grace only the most respectable big-name developers are expected to possess.

Right from the beginning, the music and brief dialogue pulled me in. There’s just something about the somber score and initial mystery that immediately struck a chord with me. After being brought up to speed by a talking scarecrow, I was eager to start exploring the small but open environment and figure out exactly why poor Wilson was all alone in his twilight years. This lead to a lot of glances at Wilson’s journal for hints about where to go next, wandering to specific locations to both trigger a brief memory cutscene and receive a clue about how to progress, unlocking a journal entry for said location with more story detail then moving on to the next area and repeating the process. It’s a rhythm that’s bound to annoy and bore players expecting something with a bit more action, but those looking for a good story will be too absorbed by the haunting world and even more haunting memories to notice.

I do, however, have two-and-a-half gripes about the experience. Firstly, dream:scape can’t handle multitasking very well. The functionality is in there, but unless a user only exits it for a minute or two before jumping back in it inevitably crashes. Restarting will restore progress to the last checkpoint, but the un-skippable introductory “Poor Mr. Wilson” dialogue will have to be watched again every time. Which kind of kills the impact. Secondly, the movement controls feel sluggish and unresponsive. Since dream:scape isn’t exactly action-heavy it’s not a huge deal, but it can be annoying when trying to climb the occasional ladder or walk across narrow wooden planks. Halfly, the game will start to stutter when too much of the open environment is in view. Again, it’s not game-breaking, but it’s somewhat irritating to have Wilson’s already leisurely pace reduced to a mere crawl when walking down the hill from the church.

I worry that the two dollar price (it’s sad that that’s considered “costly”) coupled with limited replayability will see dream:scape hit with far too many negative reviews in the App Store. Too often too many are too quick to judge (or purchase without reading descriptions) and quality titles will suffer for it. I sincerely hope this doesn’t happen to speedbump studios. This was a great first effort from a developer that shows real talent and promise. At the very least, they deserve a chance to show us what else they can do.

Make A Mixtape With Dragontape

Once upon a time, the mixtape was the most romantic thing that anyone could ever do for me. While the cassette tape gave way to the CD, both offering ways of providing mixes, the digital era didn’t really leave any room for romance. Unless of course, the romantic person decides to use something like Dragontape.

Dragontape is an universal app that lets its users create up to 3 hours long mixtapes of their favorite YouTube and Soundcloud clips. They can rearrange the clips however they want, edit and crossfade (in the case of Soundcloud). It’s all done via the app and a Dragontape.com account that’s quick and simple to get set up, then the only restriction is a person’s imagination.

It’s an easy app to use with editing only ever requiring one tap of a finger. Switching from track to track is simply a matter of swiping across the screen so it’s easy to skip tracks if need be. Users can share their creations with whoever they want via Twitter, Facebook, e-mail and the Dragontape website. Socially minded people can also browse other creations for some inspiration. There’s also the potential to collaborate with friends which could provide a great learning tool too for something like a group project.

The potential overall really is pretty great. At its simplest, users can use Dragontape to set up a mixtape of their favorite workout music. There’s also the romantic element of creating a mix of tracks for someone they love. Or people could use it to simply create a montage of videos of a beloved pet, or a concert they attended.

Dragontape is available now for all iOS devices. It’s currently free but there are suggestions on the app page that it’s free while in beta with a possible pricetag added in the future. So best get downloading now.

Free Time Review

By
Rob Rich on June 20th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: HANDY
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Free Time won’t change anyone’s life, but it will make figuring out when they can make plans nice and easy.

Developer: Ben Johnson
Price: Free
Version: 1.0.1
App Reviewed on: iPhone 3GS
iPhone Integration Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Overall Rating: 4.33 out of 5 stars

Time always seems to be the one thing we never have enough of when we really need it. Time travel isn’t an option – at least, not until Apple finds a way to roll it into an iOS update – so time management is the best we can do for now. Busy folks the world over are familiar with schedules, secretaries and appointment books, but Free Time aims to do away with all those complexities. By simply entering a schedule into the Calendar of an iOS device, and fiddling with a few options, users can get a well-presented breakdown of their unclaimed hours and minutes rather than having to dig through the task list for a given day and start doing math.

With the exception of a few options and time overlaps, Free Time is a pretty slick app. It integrates with the iOS Calendar automatically, so a user’s schedule only has to be entered once. Once that’s set up, various settings such as regular meal and bed times can be fiddled with until every minute of every day is accounted for. Then it’s a simple matter of taking a look at a given day and seeing which blocks of time don’t have anything occupying them. It’s a handy way of figuring out when’s a good time to meet someone for lunch or spend some time with an old friend who’s in town, but when the other party also has an iOS device with Free Time it gets even easier. Simply “fist bump” (*shudder*) with the two devices and Free Time will automatically determine when you’re both available.

The only scuff marks on the high-gloss finish here are some rather limited options that don’t take into account the fact that some people don’t work a regular 9 to 5 job. As one such individual, I noticed that the time blocking algorithm (or whatever it’s real name is) seemed to get confused when work began one day and ended the next. Such as when working from 4pm to just after midnight. By the same token, the option sliders for choosing wake up and sleep times don’t go past certain values. For example, bed time can’t be set to anything after 12am. It’s an unfortunate oversight that the developer is aware of and plans to adjust with an update, but as of right now it’s still somewhat of an issue.

Only slightly hampered by its current short-sightedness, Free Time is still a very intuitive and useful app. Even without a friend with their own copy, figuring out when to meet up is a simple matter of using the built-in filter to search by days, times and more. For free, it’s pretty much a no-brainer for anyone with a busy schedule. There is a Premium upgrade option, but it’s only a dollar and the only real difference is that there are no ads and no limits on availability notifications or “bumping.” So I suppose it’s a no-brainer either way, really.
