Hello.App for iPad Review

By
Chris Kirby on June 24th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★½☆
iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad

In the vast array of Facebook apps out there, Hello.App does some things pretty well. But does it justify a $1.99 purchase?

Developer: Kent Nguyen
Price: $1.99
Version Reviewed: 1.2.1

Some things just may not happen. A native Facebook app for the iPad appears to be one of those things. Nature abhors a vacuum, however, so multiple developers have ponied up their best apps to create a Facebook experience on the iPad. Results have been mixed. The latest attempt, Hello.App, has similar (mixed) results. It does some things quite well, but in the end it might not be worth a purchase when Facebook in mobile Safari works as well as it does.

Anyone who has used Facebook within the iPad’s mobile version of Safari can attest that it works, if not always perfectly or consistently. Hello.App strives to create a clean, streamlined version of Facebook. Once signed in, users are brought to the News Feed page, but may easily navigate to other areas, including messages, notes, events, places, friends and notifications via a row of icons at the top of the page (note that Hello.App functions well in both landscape and portrait modes). Curiously, on the home page there is also a row of clickable options (including links to the desktop Facebook site, and the option to log out) but these are rendered less than ideal due to formatting that causes them to jam up against one another or overflow onto other parts of the screen.

Hello.App does add several innovations to the traditional Facebook app. One is the use of bookmarks. Users can bookmark friends as they browse, making their walls readily accessible anytime from the bookmark menu. However, it’s unclear what can be bookmarked and what cannot. As it stands currently, users are extremely limited in terms of bookmarks, but I can see where this is a feature that could be exploited in the future.

The other innovation is the use of a navigation wheel. When accessed, the wheel allows users to bookmark, message, poke or view the profile of friends. Again, it’s a clever idea, but its implementation is spotty. It’s hard to know when it will be available and when it won’t. I spent several frustrating minutes trying to figure out the nuances of both the wheel and the bookmarking features, but they are unintuitive as they currently exist.

Hello.App tries to separate itself from the pack of Facebook apps available on the App Store, but it’s clear there is still much work to be done before it can rival the desktop Facebook experience. For now, stick with that.

Fish Galaxy:
Anyone who has ever mumbled the phrase: “Like shooting fish in a barrel” now have an app to put the money where their mouth is. Fish Galaxy places a bubble gun at the bottom of the screen and it is up to players to skillfully shoot fish as they swim by. Those that get bored with capturing sushi can also enjoy one of the 11 bonus mini-games to mix things up. With 42 different fish to catch, it is going to be a busy day at sea.

Magic Zoo:
This is no ordinary zoo full of boring lions, elephants, or penguins. No, this zoo is packed to the brim with awesome creatures like a genie, ogres, Pixies, and even an unicorn. Players will need to customize their zoo with hundreds of decorations to encourage visitors to come check out the baby Mad Hatter. With hundreds of new creatures to breed, this is one zoo that will always be fun to visit.

Ninja Rescue:
Pigs seem to constantly be getting a bad rap as of late, and they are not taking it anymore, especially when a wolf kidnaps the beloved little pigs from the village. Ninja Rescue is all about solving puzzles by placing various items in the world to solve dilemmas so the Ninja Pig can roll, and bounce, through the stage in order to get to the little piggy. Don’t forget, pigs do bounce, so air tactics will also need to be considered. Is anyone else hungry for bacon now?

Secrets of the Dragon Wheel HD:
Gamers who want to stop murder and mayhem in exotic locations like the far east need not look any further. Secrets of the Dragon Wheel places players in the role of Epiphany O’day as she tries to track down the evil Dragon Wheel artifact. Help Epiphany find the clues by locating hidden objects scattered about various scenes. Finding Waldo may be easier than piecing this puzzle together.

Bok Choy Boys:
Little Orphan Susan’s dreams are no longer safe thanks to the invasion of Numbskullz, and thus is it up to the player to help rid her dreams of this nemesis. Players won’t go at this alone as they can recruit the help of the Bok Choy Boys to fight off the dream invaders. There are 35 levels to strategically battle though with 12 different Bok Choy Boys ranging from Fire, Sky, Luck, Snow, and many more. The battle will be intense, but this is one dreamland worth saving!

Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: Wonderfully Well Crafted
iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad

Alice in New York for the iPad is one of the best looking and finest crafted examples of an interactive book to date. Although the word has been used to death, this time it’s apt: It’s magical.

Alice in New York for the iPad is a brilliant re-imagining of the 140 year old book "Alice Through the Looking Glass" by Lewis Carroll. This version, liberally adapted, has the look and feel of an old parchment tome in its over 130 pages.

Twenty-seven interactive graphic pages done in the familiar style of John Tenniel, the original illustrator, are a mash-up of Victorian New York, with a few recognizable paintings tossed in. If you look hard enough, you can even find a portrait of Tenniel on a wall. What makes this app a treasure is how well the interactivity is accomplished. In most books of this type, either objects are spring loaded allowing things to bounce or using the accelerometer, turning the iPad will move objects around the screen. Alice in New York brings a new dimension to the physics behind interactive elements. Many objects move in complex manners that allow you to move sections of an object independently of other parts. This brings an improved sense of realism to the genre. What makes it even better is that interactivity is used for more than eye-candy. A nice example is that when Alice is in a darkened room, you'll find a lighted chandelier that must be stretched to clearly read text on the page. Very often, you'll have to move things out of the way to read all of the words. A feature that surprised me, and that I had never before seen was that objects do more than bounce around. For example, in a store, if you're careful, you can put things back on shelves and re-hang clothing. I really enjoyed experiencing interactivity for a purpose.

Aside from interactivity, the quality of the graphics are often breathtaking and the combination of that along with appropriate sounds and music add to the effect. One graphic that stopped me in my tracks was a Victorian view of Coney Island's Astroland Park in its heyday with the sound of the Cyclone Roller Coaster pervading the soundtrack.

A few minor quibbles I had, which may be design choices, are that although the index is page numbered, many of the text pages look similar as thumbnails, and since there are no page numbers in the book proper, it made navigation a bit difficult. However, when you leave the app, the last page viewed is bookmarked and is displayed upon the next launch. The other design choice I question is that all the text pages are silent. There is no narration, which is probably a good idea for such a long book, but I would appreciate an atmospheric soundtrack that can be enabled or disabled. Additionally, as you get farther into the book, the graphic pages become more scarce.

In summary, Alice in New York is a wonderful app that takes chances by taking liberties with such a well loved and time honored book and comes up a winner just about every time. It's quite an accomplishment and by the time you get to the fireworks at the top of the Empire State Building, you'll be wanting more.

IUGO, fresh off of their entry into the freemium social gaming scene with Lil’ Pirates, are releasing another social game. This one is for those who like their games nautical, but not quite so pirate-y. Welcome to Sunshine Cruise Lines!

The game puts players in charge of their own cruise ship, with the goal being to build the ship up to make it as big and popular as possible. The app starts with naming the captain, and the ship. Feel like naming a ship after elements of Norse mythology? Go ahead! Next, the player selects a starting point and destination. Cuba is a possible destination, no embargoes here in the world of Sunshine Cruise Lines! Along the way, players manage the cruise ship themselves, from restocking and filling vending machines to helping to break up fights amongst passengers until the ship reaches its destination. This is done by tapping on elements of the ship as time passes. Between cruises, the rooms on the ship can be rearranged or even changed entirely, while new elements can be purchased for the cruise ship.

The game doesn’t just dump players into the middle of the ocean, however – there’s are missions to accomplish in the game as well, going along with a storyline. These missions generally involve making it to specific locations, providing a guiding hand for progressing through the game. Sunshine Cruise Lines’ premium currency are Cruise Bucks, which are used to do things like instantly travel to a location, reaping the rewards of traveling instantly. The game is a universal application, and it supports Retina Display graphics on compatible devices. The game can be played across multiple devices, but only when connected via Facebook; it does not happen through Game Center authentication. Sunshine Cruise Lines is available now from the App Store.

Questionnaire Review

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: USEFUL
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Enabling users to collate statistical data simply and easily.

Collecting and analysing information and data is something that’s immensely useful to a wide range of professions. Whether it’s a cafe owner that wants to check their range of sandwiches is a hit with its patrons, or a sociology student wanting to confirm a hypothesis, statistics are vital. Cold hard facts are just so darn useful for figuring things out from marketing strategies to customer feedback. So an app like Questionnaire looks to be an excellent yet simple way of collating all this information.

It takes mere minutes to set up a simple questionnaire through the app. Users can choose to collect information such as full name, address, phone number and e-mail address, or they can cut it back to a bare minimum if they want a more anonymous surveying experience. A library of questions can then be added with the options of multiple choice responses or the participant’s own take on a situation, offering up more information than the restrictive nature of ticking a box.

Upon collating all the data, users can then check a series of pie charts to analyse the responses given. Further options come in the form of being able to export completed questionnaires as comma separated version (csv) files or xml, as well as the ability to export as PDF reports too.

Multiple questionnaires, or events as the app likes to call them, can be set up too so that it’s easy to switch to a different survey as and when required. Plus there’s the convenient ability to customize the appearance of each questionnaire with different logos or colors which is particularly useful for corporate studies. There isn’t any way of editing the template completely however which is a shame, nor is there an option to describe to users how to answer questions which would have been helpful for novice users.

Despite these brief shortcomings however, Questionnaire is a pretty comprehensive survey gathering tool. It’s an Universal app too which further enhances its potential for being useful. For the price, it’s well worth a look for those in the appropriate field of work.
