Slam Dunk Basketball

Listen up hoops fans, because there is a new basketball game in town. If you are looking for a free chance to take a shot on the hardwood, this is your opportunity. In the new game Slam Dunk Basketball you are competing against the clock and gamers all over the world for leaderboard supremacy. As you are more successful, additional courts and settings will be unlocked, further amplifying the action. Be sure not to lose sight of the sixty awesome achievements either, because they will raise the roof!

Speedy Biker Xtreme

Motorheads better be ready, because this game is ready to race right by you. This awesome little gem is about maxing your crotch rocket out to the peak of its potential, while still keeping your eyes on the track. With several new bikes and tracks added to the mix, along with the ability to create tracks of your own, it is safe to say that this is the game that keeps on giving, even long after its initial release. Saddle up, because this could be a bumpy ride to say the very least!

Awakening – Moonfell Wood

For those of you that enjoyed the puzzle games of old, this is a title that might be right in your wheelhouse, as long as you have at least halfway decent vision. Awakening is a hidden object game that doubles as a puzzler, that is meant to turn you brain into putty. Simple minded folks need not apply, but if you are one for testing the limits of your mental capacity this may be worth taking out for a spin. Or should I say, a search?

Torchwood: Web of Lies

Who doesn’t love a good mystery? Fans of the BBC series Torchwood are no newcomers to the concept, so why not enjoy the universe more in bite sized gaming fun? Set as a companion to the series, the game introduces the amazing Eliza Dushku as Holly, in this compelling hybrid of action gaming and motion comics. Call us crazy, but this might even appeal to those that are not just fans of the series, but comic buffs as well. At any point, this seems like an awesome free glimps into the world of Torchwood. It is well worth a glance.

Texas Hold’em Poker Pro

I don’t know about you, but for me there is no bigger thrill then going all in, hoping that your luck will change with one card flip on the river. Does that sound like french to you? If so, either you don’t watch enough ESPN late at night, or you have been living under a rock for the last decade. For the rest of us normal folk who enjoy a good card game from time to time, Poker Pro may be a solid title worth looking into. Just be sure to never go all in when bluffing. Those jerks on the internet can see through all of your shenanigans in a sonic second!

Cavorite Review

By
Rob Rich on July 8th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: UNEXPECTED
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

While it may look like an action-platformer at first glance, Cavorite has more to do with block-pushing (and floating) puzzles than shooting. Thankfully it’s a lot of fun so that’s okay.

Developer: Cascadia Games
Price: $1.99
Version: 1.0
App Reviewed on: iPhone 3GS
Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.19 out of 5 stars

A brilliant scientist named Cavor has invented a bizarre substance (dubbed “cavorite”) which, when sprayed on things, can break the laws of gravity and cause them to float. Naturally he uses this gooey stuff to craft a space ship and fly to the moon, promptly gets captured by moon men and has his ship stolen. Now he has to escape, collect enough components to repair the ship and get back to Earth. It’s pretty much H.G. Wells’ The First Men in the Moon, only without Mr. Bedford.

Initially it’s pretty easy to mistake Cavorite for an action-platforming game akin to something featuring Capcom’s Blue Bomber, but this is most certainly not the case. For starters, the professor’s “gun” isn’t lethal; instead, it sprays cavorite which can be used to make boxes float for a brief time. It’s a mechanic that’s used to great effect in every level, it just might not be the mechanic some will be expecting. In fact, the only way to destroy or incapacitate an enemy is through clever use of the environment. So yeah, consider that a heads-up.

Continuing on with the idea of initial impressions, I feel compelled to say a few words about Cavorite‘s visuals. The retro look is here to stay, that’s for sure, but the blending of that ever-popular “16-bit” style with a steampunk motif is an appealing combination that isn’t all that common. Of course, as with all games, graphics aren’t everything and thankfully it also has some pretty solid controls that sidestep many of the most prevalent iOS platformer pitfalls (i.e. sliding between the left and right buttons actually works). Along with the distinct look and responsive controls are some pretty nefarious (in a good way) level designs that will have players scratching their heads for a while as they try to piece together the solution. Some stages up the ante even further by throwing very small timed windows of opportunity into the mix that can, and will, result in a spare part’s destruction or flat-out failure if things aren’t done fast enough. These particular puzzles aren’t as bad as they sound, honest.

Then, of course, we come to the not so great stuff: Cavorite‘s overzealous coddling. Including an option for players to skip a level if they keep failing or restarting is fine, and the draw of collecting all the ship parts will certainly bring them back once they’ve gotten some more practice in on later stages, but having the skip screen pop up just as a level is restarting (often resulting in the controls sticking because I was attempting to move before the screen actually appeared) isn’t. I’m not suggesting its removal as it’s a nice feature to have, but having it come up before players are given control or including an option to turn off the reminder would be great solutions to the issue.

This is really a minor quibble over a great little puzzle game. With over sixty levels spread across three areas (Deep Caverns, Lava Tunnels and Lunar Foundry), and fifty eight ship parts to collect, it should keep all but the most persistent players busy for a while. And since it’s an iOS title, there’s always the hope that Cascadia Games will release a future update with more stages.

… Pretty please?

Call of Mini: Zombies Review

By

Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: 360 UNDEAD DEGREES
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

This twin-stick shooter puts various weapons in the player’s hands and lots of zombies in their sights.

Developer: Triniti Interactive Limited

Price: $0.99
Version Reviewed: 1.2
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 3GS

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.69 out of 5 stars

Of all the different control schemes found through the decades of gaming history, the classic twin-stick shooter control scheme is probably one of the easiest to translate to the iOS experience. The one-thumb-to-move-one-thumb-to-shoot school of thought removes the need for more than two buttons or joysticks and maps fairly well to a touch screen experience. This is probably one of the many reasons why one can find game after game with this simple setup in the iOS catalog. Call of Mini: Zombies is essentially a twin-stick shooter with one big difference.

Where most twin-stick shooters have a top-down or isometric perspective, Call of Mini pulls the camera right down to the ground for an over the shoulder view very reminiscent of a modern third-person shooter. While this is an interesting twist on the twin-stick shooter, it does have its drawbacks. One of the things that sets a twin-stick shooter apart is the ability to quickly shift the angle of fire in a full 360 degree range no matter what direction the character is facing or moving. Having the camera in a third-person perspective cuts off every firing angle behind the camera. While the player can use the second stick to direct the fire in front of them, there is no way for them to quickly aim that fire in the other direction without turing their character physically around in the environment. This does make the game a bit difficult when the zombies really begin to swarm.

The gameplay is what most players would expect from a twin-stick shooter turned third-person shooter. The game is broken up into days and during each day the player selects a section of the map to clear of zombies. There are a four distinct sections of the map to play in and players will bounce back and forth between them from day to day. Surviving each day consists of fighting off waves of zombies and the waves get longer and more difficult each day. Players will collect ammo, power-ups, and money as they are fighting off the zombie hordes. Money is also awarded at the end of each day and can be used to upgrade armor, buy and upgrade weapons, and purchase new characters with different abilities.

The enemy zombies are varied and each zombie type has it’s own unique way of attacking; from the vomiting nurse zombie to the charging linebacker zombie. This doesn’t really lead to a need for strategic play though, as most zombies just need enough damage dealt to destroy them.

The art is of a familiar boxy, cute style that is likely well known to most iOS gamers. It goes well with the gameplay and allows the 3D environment to load fast enough that poor frame-rates don’t interfere with player’s enjoyment of the game. Ultimately, while this game might not do anything revolutionary for the twin-stick shooter genre it’s an enjoyable way to spend some time wading through some undead carnage.

Dino Catch Combines Dinosaurs With Math in a Delicious Gaming Shell

Puzzle games and dinosaurs don’t usually go together, what with dinosaurs not typically being known for their huge brains, but they are finally together at last. The goal of Dino Catch is simple – there is a dinosaur in the center of the 11X11 hexagonal grid, with some of the hexagons already filled in. The goal is to try to not let the dinosaur reach the edge of the board, and to trap him so that he can’t reach the edge. The dino and the player take turns, with the player putting down a hexagon, and then the dino moving. The goal is to try to force the dino into already-established sections of the board, or trying to tunnel it so that it can be potentially blocked off. The game keeps track of the player’s win-loss record versus the dinosaur, and at first, the record will likely be tilted far in the favor of the dinosaur for a while. This game is based off a math problem called the “Angel Problem,”though this is far more fun than most math problems are. The game comes with Game Center support through OpenFeint, and is a free download. The game offers the ability to remove ads and unlock a 2-player mode by paying $0.99 through in-app purchase.

According to a study released by TechCrunch last month, the average Facebook user has 229 friends yet 7% of them are people that they’ve never met and 3% are people who have only ever met up once!

Of course, just because people haven’t met up with Facebook friends in real life, that doesn’t mean they don’t know them well. But how to test that? Playing Trivia With Facebook Friends of course!

It’s a new and free app that uses the information gained from Facebook profiles to provide players with questions all about the respective friend. Questions start out quite simple with the likes of main interests, birthdays and hometowns. As things progress though, it gets much harder with recent Facebook activity questioned as well as more exact questions such as how many photos have been tagged featuring the player and the friend.

Trivia With Facebook Friends looks like a fun way of discovering just how much people know about each other.

It’s a free and universal app. However, users are restricted to five lives a day which can also be increased for a small monetary sum via an in-app purchase. Removing adverts can also be done by paying $0.99.

Presidents vs. Aliens Review

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: SECRETARY OF EDUCATION
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Presidents vs. Aliens is an edutainment game that is a combination of a puzzle game and presidential factions.

Developer: Dan Russell-Pinson
Price: $1.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPod touch 4, iPad 1

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.88 out of 5 stars

Welcome to Presidents vs. Aliens, a game that combines two of America’s greatest pastimes: politicians and kicking alien butt, a combination that led to Independence Day becoming a smash hit. The goal of the game is to launch a president’s head into the sky to hit the aliens on the playing field, trying to clear them all out. Now, the way to get presidents’ heads to launch at the aliens is by answering multiple-choice questions about presidential facts, like who was in office when certain events in American history occurred, what party they were in, or to identify the presidents by their portrait alone. Only then can the presidents be used to take out the aliens. Getting three questions in a row correct grants use of a powerup, such as Alien Infection, where aliens that are hit can be used to take out other aliens; Triple President, which launches three presidents at once; and Zero Gravity, which is exactly what it says on the tin.

The concept is really entertainingly ridiculous and is never quite explained why presidents have to be launched against aliens, so just sit back and enjoy it. The game improves on the similarly-structured Stack the Countries in terms of progression; with fewer presidents to collect, as well as puzzles that progress in difficulty, the experience is focused. This isn’t just a physics puzzle game, either; the facts about the presidents are legitimately interesting and educational. I know far more about Franklin Pierce than I did entering this game. Combine this with the fun alien-busting gameplay, along with the two bonus modes unlocked, and this is an intriguing game.

Presidents vs. Aliens has pretty much no failure; granted, this is meant to be an edutainment game, and one that kids would play, but there’s just absolutely nothing pushing for efficient play. Perhaps a star system or limited number of tries per level would help this aspect of the game out. Again, this is a game that kids will play, and the goal is education as much as entertainment, so preventing frustration from failure is an important goal, but it just feels like with some kind of ability to fail, the game would be more interesting.

Presidents vs. Aliens is solid edutainment. It’s far more fun than any social studies class I ever took, that’s for sure! This one’s a good choice for the young, and the young at heart, so they can learn while they defeat evil aliens.
