Hugely popular iOS game developers, Chillingo, have today announced that they’re not finished with feeding the cute little creature, Om Nom, just yet. The hit game, Cut the Rope, will be receiving its version 1.4 update in the near future, entitled ‘Toy Box’. With this update will come 25 brand new levels, some new features and even new game mechanics that’ll offer players some different ways to feed the little, green fellow.

New features will include a ‘Star Key’ that allows players to unlock boxes and the ability to choose what type of food is being played with — so it’s the players’ choice whether Om Nom has candy or donuts, but please do try to mix it up and ensure the little guy gets a balanced and varied diet. They’re also putting some hidden drawings into every box which can be unlocked and shared with friends via Facebook, while the final listed feature will allow one to get those friends playing by way of a built in ‘Gift This App’ option.

Finally, seeing as it’s a ‘Toy Box’ update, there had better be some toys, right? Well there is; Chillingo are also launching a range of plush Om Nom toys, pictured below, although there’s no revelation of when or where we’ll be able to buy these from just yet.

I can’t even count the number of times when I have been sitting around with my fiance on a balmy weekend day and asked the question, “Where should we go for supper tonight?”  While we don’t eat out on what might be thought of as a frequent basis, when we do decide to venture out we tend to not take any risks in our dining destinations.  Let’s face it, there is nothing worse than rolling the dice on an eating establishment and getting let down.

For this very reason the new iOS app Alfred was born.  Based on receiving a list of a user’s favorite eating establishments, it goes to work finding new places that might suit their fancy.  No matter the type of meal, Alfred will have a solid recommendation of a place to get a bite, on any budget.

Is this some new form of dark magic?  Highly unlikely.  But I can tell you with all assurances that it could change eating habits forever.  Give this free app a download and let us know what you think of it in the comments.

Have you ever been firing up your iPhone and felt so lazy that it seemed like drudgery to just fire up a necessary application?  For those us us that like to provide the least amount of effort necessary for every task, I present to you Dragon Go!

Imagine being able to find the showtimes for the most recent Harry Potter flick by simply asking the iPhone “Harry Potter Showtimes.”  Dragon Go! is just that smart.  All you need to do is use a few keywords for the application, plus have a constantly connected 3G connection, and the tool handles all the rest.

Gone are the days of the finger press, because this is the app I have been dreaming of for far too long.  On the other side of the effort coin this must also be a godsend for iPhone owners with disabilities, because of the enhanced use that the device can now provide.  No matter how you look at it, this is a free tool that is well worth the download.

Special Enquiry Detail: The Hand That Feeds Review

By
Jennifer Allen on July 18th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: ENJOYABLE
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Special Enquiry Detail might suffer a little due to the small screen, but it’s an enjoyable romp of a hidden object game.

Developer: G5 Entertainment
Price: FREE (with $4.99 in-app purchase unlocking full game)
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 4

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars

There’s something simplistically compelling about Special Enquiry Detail: The Hand that Feeds. On the surface it’s a title we’ve all seen before – a hidden object game that was previously a PC title. Converted over to the iPhone screen, it suffers slightly from the limited screen space the device offers but it’s still quite enjoyable.

While the hidden object genre frequently does away with compelling narrative, Special Enquiry Detail: The Hand that Feeds offers a pretty intriguing tale of murder and corruption. It feels like a lightweight version of CSI, right down to the puzzles that are offered. Besides the many hidden object sequences, there are also a series of mini game puzzles, typically of the rotating jigsaw kind or safe cracking variety. Few are hugely challenging but they break up the gameplay nicely as well as add to the storyline.

Some hidden object tropes no longer exist making the game much simpler, such as the fact there’s no penalty for touching the wrong item and there’s also no penalty for asking for a hint. It makes the game easier if the player wishes to go down that route but it also offers a greater focus on the storyline. As previously mentioned, some puzzles suffer a little from the small screen space and the need for multiple fingers to manipulate objects. For the impatient, it does encourage a sneaky press of the skip puzzle button which is a shame. There’s also the issue of how bright the screen is as the game does offer some shady corners, making it tricky to see at times.

Other than the screen limitations however, Special Enquiry Detail: The Hand that Feeds is a pretty solid hidden object style game. Offering a bit more to the genre than just spotting objects, there’s some extra longevity here and the 12 chapters in all feel sturdy enough in length to make the asking price of $4.99 reasonable.

Reckless Getaway Review

By

Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: PEDAL TO THE METAL
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Outrun the cops and make a quick (and messy) escape in this breakneck getaway game.

Developer: Polarbit

Price: $2.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0.1
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 3GS

Graphics / Sound Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.56 out of 5 stars

Every great bank robbery needs a getaway. And any great robbery getaway calls for fast cars, crazy stunts, and lots, and lots of collateral damage. Reckless Getaway delivers all of these in spades and packages the whole experience in easily consumable snack-sized levels.

Reckless Getaway has much in common with its brother from the same mother (or developer), Reckless Racing. The driving and handling of the cars are almost identical and the visuals share the same fidelity and polish. Where Reckless Getaway differs is in the gameplay. Instead of a racing game where the point is to cross the finish line before the other cars, Getaway puts players behind the wheel of a bank robbery getaway car that must escape pursing police cars. There is no timer, and the player has unlimited chances to get to the end of each level. The point is to rack up points and be awarded as many stars as possible at the end of each level. Power-ups like boosts, jump jets, and shock waves will help players reach ever higher scores.

Players collect points by jumping their cars, knocking police cars over and destroying them, collecting coins, passing traffic, and performing otherwise crazy and over the top stunts. As players complete stunts and collect more points four stars will fill up one at a time. At the end of each level the player is awarded a star for each one that was filled up. Each new chapter of the game is unlocked when the player has earned enough stars.

The levels are very cleverly laid out and the terrain varies in unexpected and erratic ways. These changes in the terrain not only make the game more fun, they also show of the game’s impressive tech. The way the cars move over the hills, the dirt roads, the ramps, and bumps is one of the best parts of this game.

Reckless Getaway looks phenomenal and it is crazy fun to crash a getaway car through traffic, over ramps, and down winding dirt roads. Everyone should get behind this wheel and make their getaway.

Wizard of Oz 3D, The Experience Review

By
Lisa Caplan on July 18th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: OZ-MAZING
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Back to basics with a beautifully rendered iPad digital book, for all ages.

Developer: FlyingWord Inc
Price: 4.99
Version: 1.0
App Reviewed on: iPad 2

Overall Rating: 4.33 out of 5 stars

It was at the dawn of a new century – the 20th – that The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the first of 19 serialized children's stories by L. Frank Baum, began to capture the imagination of first America and then the world.

Part audiobook, part digibook, Wizard of Oz 3D, The Experience brings the classic to life on iOS in a way that will make a reader's eyes open wide.

This book-app has the complete classic text, Greg Hildebrandt's rich illustrations and adds first rate voice acting, mixed with what are genuinely three dimensional, or at least, illusion-of-depth creating illustrations.

This is not a complex interactive book. It has no games, no tapping to reveal a hidden munchkins, just a few small things to move within some illustrations, but it needs no extra flash. This is the book that generations grew up with, illustrated in a very 21st century way.

The physics engine used to render the beautiful full color drawings and detailed sketches is amazing. Almost every virtual page reveals an artistic reimaging of the beloved cast and moving the iOS device allows a user see them from multiple angles, not unlike a paper pop-up book.

It can take a minute to get used to the "Pinch and Flick" feature, but once a reader gets the hang of it, it allows them to drag any drawing to the front, zoom in on it and really explore the details. Conversely, it allows the illustration to be flicked to the top of the page, mini-icon sized, so more text can be displayed.

This is not, strictly speaking, a kid's book-app. Of course it will appeal to children as the story always has, but it's a text-dense, feature-lite app. Its appeal lies in the wonderful narration of the audio book, and the breathtaking design.

Narration can be turned off, but one of the more subtle things that makes this app so engrossing are the sound effects and the ambient noises. They don't hit a reader over the head, but instead enhance the mood like a good movie score.

There is no need for a new review of one of the most beloved and iconic stories in modern history, and an app that recounts the story isn't new either. What FlyingWord adds to the mix is the illusion that the reader is engaged with a traditional, even old-fashioned book, almost unaware of the technology that helps the tale feel as fresh today as it did in 1900. It's a wonderful way to meet or revisit the magical world of Oz.
