Fast Reactions Are Needed for Tap Maze

So called twitch gaming, reacting quickly to a situation within a game, is often quite satisfying. It doesn’t need fancy graphics or detailed storytelling, it simply needs an addictive form of gameplay to entice. Tap Maze hopes to do exactly that by testing both the player’s reactions and their reasoning.

It’s a free to download universal game that requires players to move a small white ball to the goal of each level while avoiding the obstacles within each stage. Often these obstacles move around so Tap Maze is frequently far from an easy game to complete.

As the screenshots show, the mazes within each level get increasingly complex thus requiring fast reactions indeed. Tap Maze might lack the graphical finesse of some titles but it certainly hopes to make up for this with challenge. It looks ideal for both a quick session or an extended play.

Tap Maze is out now for all iOS devices as it’s an universal app. Check out the launch trailer below.

Track Friends As They Run The New York City Marathon

Quite a few of my friends are much fitter than I am and have successfully completed 5k runs and even the odd marathon too. Cheering them on as they proceed is great but it’s not always very easy to keep up with them! Plus sometimes I just can’t make it to the event but would love to keep track of their progress. A pretty cool app could well change that, at least for New York City Marathon goers.

An app by the name of the ING New York City Marathon Spectator app is set to be released in time for the event in November. It’s from the team behind MapMyRun and iMapMyRide and looks set to revolutionize things. GPS technology will allow users to keep track of competitors in real time and it works with RFID chip timings.

Participants can also set the app to tweet and update their Facebook status in accordance to how they’re performing. Text, email and mobile push notifications can also be arranged.

It looks set to be a pretty cool tool for race participants with additional features aimed at the specific race such as an official map listing where first and hydration stations are located. Hopefully it’s something that will spread to other marathons in the near future.

The ING New York City Marathon Spectator App will be released by October 28, 2011. We’ll be sure to keep track of this app’s progress.

Recycling Fun For Free With Eco Mania

Currently free for a limited time only is Eco Mania, an arcade style sorting game that hopes to add excitement to recycling.

Now I’ll admit to being no great fan of sorting out my recycling and splitting everything up into the relevant containers, however Eco Mania does add a bit of fun to the concept. Players do exactly what they do with their recycling: divide things up according to type. The difference here is that in Eco Mania speeds things up courtesy of the conveyor belt.

The game gets increasingly challenging as time goes on with the developers’ hope that this will make people think twice about simply throwing things into the garbage instead of recycling everything.

There’s a Launch Trailer out now which offers a similarly strong recycling message by giving personality to each recycling bin. Gameplay is simple yet addictive with a classic and time trial style mode in the form of frenzy available.

Eco Mania is out now and it’s free for a limited time only.

Downcast Review

By
Chris Kirby on July 21st, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: UPLIFTING
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Despite its name, Downcast can make your iOS device VERY happy.

Developer: Seth McFarland
Price: $1.99
Version Reviewed: 2.0.8

Out of the box, Apple’s iOS can acquire and play a vast array of content. However, there are some unusual quirks that continue to plague even current editions of iOS. Take podcasts, for instance. Sure, downloading podcasts is a breeze through the iOS iTunes store, but what about subscribing to a podcast? It’s not possible. Instead, subscriptions must be managed through the desktop iTunes software, which then migrates current podcast content to an iOS device during sync. Clunky, isn’t it? And, it’s a far cry from the dream of using an iPad or iPhone without the need to ever tether it to a computer.

Fortunately, there are apps for that! One of the best dedicated podcast-catching clients around is Downcast. It’s an amazingly robust and sophisticated piece of software that can help users locate, subscribe to, manage and consume all of the podcast content currently available online.

Consider Downcast the Podcasting client Apple forgot to include in iOS. It’s feature-rich and includes gesture support, playlist creation, playback speed adjustments, online sharing via Twitter and Facebook, and the ability to import OPML files for those needing more personalization/tweaking of their podcast lists. In other words, it does pretty much anything anyone could want a podcast client to do – and even some that only a select group would ever use. What it doesn’t do, however, is stream podcasts. Those looking for that feature should stick with Stitcher or Audiopress. Downcast manages downloads effortlessly, effectively and quickly, but it does not stream content from a centralized server somewhere out there.

At the moment, there are only three negatives worth mentioning about downcast. The first is that video playback stutters sometimes. It didn’t happen with every video podcast I played, but it happened during several of them, and I’m at a loss as to why. The second is more of a backhanded compliment than a complaint, but Downcast does so much it could be intimidating for those less experienced with podcast-catchers. The final negative is that, while Downcast is a universal app, there is no way to easily sync info between your iPad and iPhone. Perhaps a user account could make it easy to access playlists and subscriptions on either device quickly?

Minor complaints aside, Downcast is truly a wonderfully designed and implemented app that fulfills a needed gap in iOS. Anyone with more than a passing interest in podcasts should download it ASAP.

It may not be a huge trend, but it appears that a growing number of companies are offering funds to assist developers to create and/or promote their apps in the Apple and Android markets. These companies foresee that the number of mobile phones and tablets purchased is only going to keep on rising for the foreseeable future along with the number of apps for these users. It's a good time to get into the marketplace. Case in point: Gamevil recently announced a $10 million partnership fund for external developers who have smartphone gaming ideas.

TV Forecast HD Review

By
Kevin Stout on July 21st, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: USEFUL
iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad

TV Forecast HD is shows a calendar view of new episodes of favorite shows.

Developer: Big Bucket Software
Price: $2.99
Version Reviewed: 1.4.1
Device Reviewed On: iPad 2

iPad Integration Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 2.75 out of 5 stars
Re-use Value Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.58 out of 5 stars

Many of us simply can't just sit down and watch a TV show. Before my iPad and iPhone, I would sit with my laptop in front of me while watching TV (some shows, like Heroes, were able to capture my full attention). Now my iPad has become my TV-watching companion. One function my iPad performs is keeping track of the shows I watch and when they are airing. I've used various TV guide apps (like iTV) but TV Forecast HD is the first one I've used that's main function is keeping track of new episodes.

The calendar view of shows was what immediately drew my eye to the app. This feature alone makes TV Forecast worth the $2.99 to buy. The app places a picture of the show on the calendar day it airs with the time it's airing. If there are multiple shows for that day, the app transitions between them every few seconds. The other view is a list view which, while not as eye-catching, is just as useful. Adding shows is as easy as pressing the plus sign and searching. The app will not add a show that is no longer on air.

The app is far from perfect. Don't expect to be able to see reruns with TV Forecast; the app shows only new, upcoming episodes. Tapping on a show will reveal an episode list where it's possible to bookmark the last episode viewed. I have a problem with the bookmark feature. If it's possible to bookmark the last episode viewed, then the app should track down the next time the next episode (not necessarily the newest episode) will be playing. Otherwise there's nearly no point to bookmarking an episode. Another issue I encountered was time zones. While the app didn't ask for permission to use location services, the times were in my time zone (double checked with a TV guide application). This must mean that the default time zone is Eastern time and users in other time zones must manually adjust the apps settings to view their own time zone.

The app would really benefit with a few additions: a link to Netflix and/or Hulu if the show is available on either site, a link to IMDB instead of just TVRage.com on the show page, suggested/featured shows, and a TV guide view. But as I said earlier, the calendar view alone is probably worth the $2.99 for most people. An iPhone version is also available, though it seems to be lacking the calendar view.

Emma And The Inventor: New Hidden Object Fun Coming Soon

Coming soon to the iPad is Emma and the Inventor, a new hidden object game from Big Fish Games and Tricky Software.

We all should know by now that Big Fish Games are the gods of hidden object games but Tricky Software might not be so well known just yet. They previously developed Spore Origins and Spore Creatures as well as more recently Crayola ColorStudio. Now they’ve taken their skills and applied them to Emma and the Inventor.

Looking at the few screenshots we’ve been given and the previous information from the PC/Mac release of the title, it’s looking pretty intriguing. It’s a hidden object title but one that promises to offer some challenging puzzles too, presumably as part of the inventing side of the game. Hopefully this will mean a deeper casual gaming experience.

No release date has been announced yet but we’ll ensure we have more details to offer soon!

CityVille Hometown Review

By
Jennifer Allen on July 21st, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: SOCIAL FUN
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Slightly sinister smiles aside, CityVille Hometown offers some reasonable free to play fun without forcing payments.

Developer: Zynga
Price: FREE
Version Reviewed: 1.012
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 4

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3.25 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.31 out of 5 stars

Seemingly now bigger than the mighty Farmville, it makes sense to see an iOS version of popular Facebook game, CityVille. This version, titled Hometown, follows much of the CityVille traditions while still maintaining its own brand of gameplay. Refreshingly for a free to play game, players won’t feel too coerced into dishing out real money in order to progress. A healthy dose of Facebook friends who also play will come in very handy, as well.

Much like the Facebook game, players take control of a growing city. At first, the town is a mere hamlet but through careful planning and growth, it’s not long before it becomes a bustling city. The amount of play time within CityVille Hometown does seem to shrink as time goes by. At first, there’s always plenty to do. A series of different missions and goals given out by the residents encourages growth and expansion. As time goes on however, it becomes more the kind of game that just needs some simple maintenance for 10-15 minutes a day here or there. This is certainly the case for those with few Facebook friends who also play.

Much of CityVille Hometown’s growth depends more on socializing with neighbors than spending real money for virtual cash. Virtual cash can be relatively easily built up simply with the waiting and grinding game thanks to a plethora of shops being purchasable. However, an increasing number of goals require neighbors which are acquired through Facebook friends. No friends playing the game can quickly slow progression down a lot.

The rest of the game mostly focuses on building new stores and homes to increase the population while also growing crops to provide something to sell. Once set up, there’s not a great amount that needs doing. The easy levelling mechanism however does encourage players to return every now and then.

It’s refreshing to see a free to play game that offers no pay wall to speak of and doesn’t force players to spend money unless they want to speed their way through a game. It makes CityVille Hometown a much easier game to recommend to those just looking for an easy casual game to drop in and out of as its upkeep is comparatively low. Just make sure to encourage friends to join in also. It makes all the difference.
