Win Stuff And Play Games With Play2Win

Play games and win prizes for doing so? Surely that’s the dream right? It was certainly my dream back when I was a kid that hoped I could somehow get away with a lifetime of playing video games.

Play2Win won’t quite pay for a mortgage or buy me holidays in the sun but there are some pretty cool prizes in there. Three games are available in all. They might not set the world on fire in terms of gaming innovation with the likes of a roulette wheel game depending more on luck than anything else amongst others. But then again it’s a free way to win things.

Prizes range from the likes of dry cleaning vouchers to massages at local spas or IKEA gift cards as well as a plethora of discounts too. The app promises that everyone’s a winner too with anyone participating at least winning a voucher for the relevant retailer. Users can browse such retailers according to what’s near them.

It certainly makes for an interesting concept. With nothing to lose, why not give Play2Win a shot? It’s free after all.

Cutesy Physics Platforming With HamStar

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. In order to provide a sustainable, best of the breed RSS to Email experience, we've chosen to keep this as a paid subscription service. If you are satisfied with your free trial, please sign-up today. Subscriptions without a plan would soon be removed. Thank you!

HamStar is a very cute looking game indeed. While no one could deny that there are plenty of different physics based puzzle games on the App Store, one that has been so lovingly developed as this, is worth taking a look at.

From a team of merely two developers, HamStar is all about the plight of young Elmo the hamster. He’s stuck you see and all on his own. He needs help in working his way through the 60+ levels on offer. As one would expect from a hamster, he’s stuck in his own hamster ball and needs to be swiped in the right direction to navigate the levels and pop the star balloons as he goes along. It’s not as easy as that of course though with red balloons, hamster wheels and falling toys all getting in the way. At times it might be a little frustrating but the general cutesy experience is bound to win people over.

Perhaps best of all is that HamStar is free to try with in-app purchases available for those who want to put some money down towards the experience. For $1.99 everything can be unlocked with lesser purchases also available such as to remove the adverts within the game.

HamStar is out now. Get to saving little Elmo!

Let’s Golf 3 Review

By
on August 23rd, 2011
Our Rating: ★★☆☆☆ :: LET'S NOT
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Let’s Golf 3 is a freemium version of Gameloft’s golfing franchise, where players earn money and experience that go toward developing their custom golfer.

Developer: Gameloft
Price: Free
Version Reviewed: 1.0.0
Device Reviewed On: iPod touch 4

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Playtime Rating: 0.5 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 1 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 2.13 out of 5 stars

Let’s Golf 3 isn’t so much a game as much as it is a business model. Playing it, it is quite clear that this was meant to be a way to turn a golf game into a freemium game.

What is there to say about golf games that hasn’t been said before? Let’s Golf 3‘s golf gameplay isn’t anything out of the ordinary; courses take place on some outlandish and nontraditional courses, such as the moon, but otherwise this is standard golfing fare. What makes Let’s Golf 3 different is that it is a freemium golf game. Players get money and experience for completing holes, which they can use to enhance their golfer’s stats and to buy new accessories that are both cosmetic and performance-enhancing.

The game is a decent round at the links; the tried-and-true three click system that has been in golf games since time immemorial is here and it works well, with the ability to apply to spin to the ball in midair. The game also has live online multiplayer where players can earn money and experience against other players. Interestingly, all players play the same hole simultaneously instead of taking turns like in traditional golf games, with a reasonable time limit that pops up when the first player finishes the hole. This way, players can take their time, but those looking to troll by doing nothing just simply cannot.

The freemium elements of Let’s Golf 3 are the problem, because of how blatant they are. The best free-to-play games make the player feel like paying is truly optional. Let’s Golf 3 never pretends that it isn’t anything but trying to make money. From anywhere in the menu, options to buy more coins, bucks (the game’s in-app credits), and experience are easily accessible. While bucks are occasionally given out in-game, there are plenty of items that are only available with massive amounts of bucks – in this case, I mean both kinds.

The most noxious element of Let’s Golf freemium hooks is the energy meter. Players can only play holes as long as they have energy charged up, which is slowly restored over time, or can be conveniently bought with the in-app credits. Without it, the game can’t be played at all. Even multiplayer matches require a certain amount of energy to play, depending on the setup of the game. The problem with this whole energy element is that it actively discourages playing the game! I can understand limiting a player’s progress without some kind of energy, but blocking off the ability to play at all? That is just foul. Eliminate Pro, one of the first games to use this kind of energy system handled it very well, as it allowed players to play without energy, just not to get any experience or money without having it. Why can’t this game do the same? I understand the reason for going free-to-play, and I understand that Gameloft is a business and they need to make money, but surely all the other enticements to pay are enough?

In short, if Let’s Golf 3 doesn’t want me to play it, why should I? I’d rather play a golf game that’s there for me whenever I want to. I’d recommend one of the previous Let’s Golf games to play instead of this, but it appears as if Gameloft has pulled them from the App Store so golf fans would have to play this. It’s a shame, because the RPG elements and online multiplayer have incredible potential. I just can’t play it. So I won’t.

Snow White Gets An Anime Flourish With Momonga’s Snow White

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. Ahh Snow White. A memorable tale for all, originally part of the Brothers Grimm’s collection and, years later, subsequently translated to the animated screen courtesy of Disney. It’s a tale that children of all ages know well. So how best to revitalize it for a modern era? By adding an anime spin to proceedings of course.

Momonga’s Snow White is the story we all know and love but illustrated in what is known as the Moé style, a slang term used by anime fans to describe the style of making each character adorable to look at. This app offers the book of Snow White with not just an anime twist in terms of looks but also music with the soundtrack composed by Kumi Tanioka, of Final Fantasy fame. As the screenshots show, the app looks glorious and the music is similarly of a high quality.

The entire package should make for an excellent re-envisioning of the classic fairy tale and will hopefully enthral anime and fairy tale fans alike.

Momonga’s Snow White is out now as an Universal app and is priced at $3.99.

The Last Rocket Review

Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: EXPLOSIVE FUN
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

The Last Rocket is a fantastic retro-inspired platformer with oodles of personality and charm.

Developer: Shaun Inman
Price: $2.99
Version: 1.0.2
App Reviewed on: iPhone 3GS

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4.75 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

In the world of The Last Rocket, intergalactic war has ceased to exist. That doesn’t stop the occasional accident from happening, however. In this case, the accident in question is a ship’s AI losing control along with some pieces of hardware (i.e. gears). Since the AI is somewhat, er, rooted, it creates one last rocket in a desperate gamble to reclaim the lost gears and save the ship before it crashes. Thus, “Flip” is born.

It’s a little unorthodox, but The Last Rocket is very much a retro platformer. Just not quite in the “running along a 2D plane and jumping on a flagpole” sense. Instead, players guide Flip through 64 rooms filled with all manner of unpleasantness while trying to collect as many gears as they can. Since he’s a self-propelled explosive and not a plumber, Flip’s movement is mostly limited to flying straight up. Although various elements sprinkled throughout each room (such as fans and conveyor belts) can adjust his trajectory.

As players move through the ship’s rooms, all manner of new elements will be introduced. Some include new obstacles, while others make use of Flip’s previously unmentioned abilities. Abilities such as ducking under low-hanging spikes or side-stepping. Each subsequent area builds upon these new elements as they’re introduced, constantly keeping players on their toes. As added incentive to keep players playing, there are multiple endings and a handful of special achievements for completing the game under various circumstances such as under a certain time limit or without blowing up. I’ll be blunt: these are not easy feats.

It’s hard to find much to complain about with The Last Rocket. I suppose if I had to nitpick, it would be that sometimes Flip’s responses to reversing his direction feel a tad sluggish. Granted, the only time I’ve ever really had this problem is in narrow spaces, so it’s probably more a product of my own timing.

I cannot stress just how impressed I am with this game. It seems to have come out of nowhere, but I personally feel it’s destined to share a spot with the rest of the App Store’s top platformers. In a way it almost surpasses them with it’s perfect match of stylish retro visuals and quality chiptunes, it’s tight controls and level design and it’s myriad of hidden gears and challenges to promote several replays. It probably sounds cliché at this point, but that doesn’t make it any less true: The Last Rocket deserves a spot in every iOS gamer’s library.
