Tapsteroids Review

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: ORBITAL CHAOS
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Tapsteroids starts off slow, but once things get moving it turns into one heck of a frantic (and fun!) space rock defense game.

I would think setting up a space station in a section of the universe (which is huge, but the way) that just happens to sit next to an asteroid field is an obvious no-no. I mean, with all the inevitable traffic that’s bound to happen by, building what is essentially a big rest stop within spitting distance of a bunch of floating debris is practically inviting a barrage of lawsuits. Apparently the Department of Transportation doesn’t get any smarter in the distant future.

In Tapsteroids, players control a planet/space station’s weapon systems and are given one simple task: keep those space rocks from breaking stuff. This is accomplished by tapping on the offending chunks in order to target them with missiles and blow them out of existence. It’s not simply a matter of keeping them from crashing into the planet or station, however. A number of space ships will fly in from the edges of the screen and attempt to dock or land, helpless fodder for the pitiless asteroids. They, in their vast numbers, are much tougher to protect.

I was honestly shocked by how much fun I’ve had with Tapsteroids. All of the hectic asteroid blasting, which is both fast and responsive, makes for quite the good time. However, the addition of special weapons with finite ammo (earned by tapping on power-ups as they float by) makes it even more so. Seeing those missiles swarm out after furiously tapping all over the screen is plenty satisfying, but so is atomizing several rocks at once with an area-effect bomb, creating a temporary barricade of lasers or clearing the entire screen at once with some kind of (EMP?) blast.

Tapsteroids does start out a little slow, however. The first five waves are just a bit too easy, which led me to initially believe that I’d be getting bored pretty fast. It certainly ramps up from level/wave six and on, but the less focused might give up on it before they get that far.

Once those initial “too easy” levels are cleared, however, Tapsteroids really hits its stride. It’s by no means easy or even relaxing as the levels progress, but it’s very, very fun. For a measly dollar, I can’t think of a single reason not to buy it.

A personal development app, GroHabit is all about cultivating new habits that will positively improve a person’s life. Recently updated, GroHabit introduces two new features in this mission. An interactive logging system uncovers the strengths and weaknesses of each user while Skill Bars allow the user to see their progress in five habit-building skills. While willpower is required alongside GroHabit, it helps users decide what behavior will help them reach their goal and how long it will take. A flexible days off system means that users are allowed to vary their schedules as needed but it’s easy to track how things are going with a mini-calendar function.

An inspirational picture and quotes section also allows users to always check out motivational bits and pieces to remind them of why they’re so determined to complete their goal. Plus GroHabit backs this up with daily messages offering helpful tips and motivational messages.

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: FUN WITH EXPLOSIVES
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Demolition Master 3D brings all the fun of physics puzzle games and explodes them with a little dynamite. If only the controls did not leave this game with a short fuze.

Who doesn’t love to blow stuff up with dynamite!?! This stuff is so awesome, it has found its way into a game, all thanks to AppMania. Demolition Master 3D is going to challenge gamers to make use of this explosive device, all while throwing in some puzzles to complicate the destructive entertainment.

Demolition Master 3D challenges players with a series of structures that need to be brought to the ground with nothing more than a few sticks of dynamite. Players will need to carefully asses the various compounds that make up the supports and various puzzle setups, and then determine the best use for their limited supply of explosives. Throwing a wrench into the mix is that certain colors of dynamite can only destroy specific types of supports. It may sound complicated, but the tutorial does a good job to guide new demolition experts into the field.

The game is a good and bad mix when it comes to how it presents itself to players. Music can be loaded from the iTunes library, which is recommended for those looking to play longer than a few minutes. The explosions are definitely pleasing on the ears, and they provide a feeling of perfect power. Visually, the game becomes a mixed bag. The game renders well, and that is a bonus when spinning and zooming in on the target. However, the surrounding construction site, as well as the backdrop, are rather plain with very little to look at. The explosions themselves are grand spectacles, and they get addictive to watch.

There is a fly in the ointment of all this fun, and that is the responsiveness of the touch controls. The later portion of the game requires a bit of finesse in where charges are placed, but that becomes hampered when the game struggles to accurately read where it is that players what to place the charges. There were several puzzles that could have been solved in less time if only the game would have recognized more precisely where the bomb was placed. Zooming in does help a bit, but the game will still fight those who are hoping for pinpoint accuracy.

Demolition Master 3D is an entertaining romp through the world of explosions and physics, even despite the lackluster control accuracy. The game quickly becomes a challenge once the tutorial is over, and obtaining three stars will keep completionists coming back for one more try. iPad owners that are interested in this app can find a version designed for said device right here! Enjoy and happy exploding!

Dragons Rage Review

Our Rating: ★★★☆☆ :: SIMPLE FUN
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Dragons Rage is a simple but stress busting action game focused on the destructive abilities of a dragon.

Developer: Prativo Group
Price: $1.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3.25 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.13 out of 5 stars

Dragons Rage is a simple but ideal form of stress relief. While it might not offer a huge amount of depth, it’s quite a fun game to dive into for a short burst here or there.

The dragon in the title is angry to say the least and sets out to wreak havoc on pretty much all townspeople that go anywhere near it. So begins a game in which the player must blow fire at everything possible. It’s a simple title with controls ensuring that anyone can pick it up and play. Using the accelerometer, players tilt the iOS device to control the direction in which the dragon’s pointed. Flames can then be emitted by holding down a button in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

Throughout each stage, red arrows on the edge of the screen depict the direction in which the next wave of foes are located with the aim to wipe the people out before they start inflicting damage upon the dragon.

That’s pretty much it. While there are different types of foes such as ranged attackers and ones that move faster than the others, there’s not a great deal of variety when it comes to gameplay. Power ups are scattered around offering extra points or health potions but none that change the game hugely. After each chapter, a bonus level opens up which uses a nice microphone blowing mechanic but it’s still pretty frivolous. It’s also potentially highly embarrassing on the daily train commute! Other than that, controls are intuitive and it’s useful to be able to move around while blowing fire.

Dragons Rage is a fun little distraction and cute to look at but if only there was more to it. Something like a change of weapon type or even more varied enemies to attack could have made this a cut above the rest. As it stands though, Dragons Rage lacks great staying power. It’s fun and stress relieving but it feels limited.

Paper Zombie:
That’s right, more zombies, but this time they are papercraft zombies, so that makes them cool. Paper Zombie takes a bit of the shooter genre, blends it with some strategy, and kicks out a game of fast action that will require some planning in order to survive. Players will cut, shoot, and launch their way through waves of the undead, all in brilliant 3D glory. There is even the ability to jump onto Facebook, zombify all those “friends,” and then pull them into the game. Break out those boomsticks, this is going to be a wild ride!

Plushed Gold Fever:
Players will take the role of a lone toy horse who is tasked with saving all the Plush Toys that have been scattered all over the Wild West thanks to the Voodoo Mouse. As players save the doomed toys, they will earn Plushed Coins, thus allowing them to unlock new shop items that will aid in their quest. There are three game modes and over 30 Plush Toys to save. This will surely keep players busy over their lunch break. The visuals are not half bad either!

Tilt Circus:
Those gamers who think they are the masters of tilt may finally have found their match in Tilt Circus. The game will challenge players to elude lasers, survive bombs, and avoid a great many traps. Only the fastest players will earn the right to be called Master of Tilt in this challenging game of skill.

Bird Smash:
The pigs finally get some well deserved revenge in Bird Smash. The birds have destroyed the blue pig’s village and he is out to seek some vengeance by destroying as many birds as possible. Players will be flicking, shooting, and tilting their way to a bird-free world. As birds are obliterated, money is earned, thus allowing upgrades to more powerful weapons. It is going to take some quick wits to down challenging bosses and utilize the various weather elements as well. Who says birds have all the glory?!?!

DragonVale:
Put on that straw hat and clean off the bib overalls, because it is time to head back to the fantasy farm. Only this time, it is not carrots and taters that will be harvested, but dragons! Players will create a park full of cute and friendly dragons by hatching, feeding and caring for them as they grow to adulthood. There are dozens of dragons to grow and train, and even friends can come in and help with all the chores that are necessary to keep things running smoothly. This just maybe the most beautiful setting to sit and lose hours of time to yet.
