We’ve all been there. Two sports events are on at once and it’s a judgement call to figure out which one to watch and which one to just keep an eye on the score of. While sometimes it’s the obvious game with the two big leading teams against each other, other times it’s a more subtle David and Goliath style conflict that turns out to be the more exciting game. How to figure out which one as soon as possible though? Maybe Thuuz will be able to help there.

It’s an app that, using some unique and mysterious algorithms, figures out the excitement of each game in real-time then rates it on a scale of 0-100. Users pick their favorite sports, teams and players, set their excitement threshold and then the app gets to work.

Currently monitoring a wide variety of sports such as NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, Soccer, Cricket, Rugby as well as college sports like Football and Basketball, this app should have sports fans pretty covered for figuring out what to watch.

Further functionality is offered with the ability to watch live games when in the US as well as track down the nearest sports bar to catch the action.

It’s a free app so give it a shot and why not report back on how it’s gone. Initial feedback is looking pretty darn promising. Finally, this predicament could be solved!

Elemites Review

Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: MAGICAL
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

This real-time strategy game pits Relph, a cast off wizard, against the towsfolk who ran him out of town. This time, he has some help.

Developer: Metaversal Studios

Price: Free
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 3GS

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Playtime Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.63 out of 5 stars

Elemites is a freemium, ad supported game where players can play the first 10 levels from the game’s first area for free and unlock two more areas via in-app purchase for $0.99. Along with the extra levels, ads are removed and new spells become available to the player as well.

Elemites tells the story of Relph, a pitiful wizard who’s been chased from his village by peasants tired of his lame magic, who is back for vengeance after finding a spell book that allows him to summon elemental minions and cast powerful spells to alter their abilities. Using these newfound abilities, the player can help Relph exact his revenge and lay waste to the towns, villages, and castles that stand in his path.

This game is an real-time strategy game that takes place on a scrolling field. As Relph walks up from the bottom of the screen, enemies come towards him from the top. By touching the screen, players can summon elemite minions from the ground to meet, attack, and destroy Relph’s enemies before they can reach Relph and harm him. As more damage is caused, the player receives more vengeance points which can be spent on upgrades to Relph, his elemite minions, or his spells.

Relph can use spells to changes the abilities of his minions. By default, the minions attack with their fists. By augmenting them with spells however, the minions can be lit on fire, thrown at great speeds, blown up, or made to be poisonous. These spells can also be combined together for even more tactical options, like throwing a group of minions that have been lit on fire, making them into flaming missiles.

This game is a lot of fun and it is really easy to get into the groove of summoning minions, augmenting them with spells, and laying waste to the country side. Various buildings and enemies in each level as well as some boss fights add variation to the game. A good number of spells are available and the seemingly endless ways they can be combined add a surprising depth to the game. Strategy fans won’t be disappointed.

The game’s controls are a bit kludgey when it comes to moving Relph from side to side to avoid hazards or pick up mana that enemies drop. The visuals aren’t as stunning as some other games but they are charming enough and fit with the game’s quirky theme. Still, these are small complaints and Elemites as a whole is still a solid title.

How’s Your iPhone Service? Tell Us For Chance to Win a $100 iTunes Card

The iPhone 5 should be coming along fairly soon, and we wanted to take a moment to gauge where our readers were at with their current service and their plans for their future service. Because, of course you’re gonna get an iPhone 5, right? We hope to use this data to make some recommendations on what the best provider for the iPhone 5 will be for you, in your area.

To get this data, we need your help. We need you to spread the word about this survey — the more responses we get, the better the results will be. Please take a second and tweet or post on your Facebook wall about this survey. All you need to do is hit those convenient tweet or like buttons at the top of the page for a quick post, or feel free to put the mention in your own words.

In the United States, AT&T has had exclusive iPhone rights up until January of this year, but now the Verizon is in on the game. And T-Mobile too, if you buy the unlocked iPhone 4 from Apple. There have been tons of complaints about service quality on the AT&T network in large cities like New York and San Francisco (and Las Vegas during CES). Switching providers to one that has better coverage for a user’s specific location may make sense. Of course, AT&T customers who have been with the telecom giant for a while might lose those grandfathered unlimited data plans, as only Sprint has unlimited data plans at this point. Of course, many of us use less data than we think, so we’ve included a spot for survey takers to measure that and report as well.

So tell us, 148Apps readers (and all your friends), what is your phone service like now? What will you choose to do once the iPhone 5 is released? Each completed surve will get a chance to be randomly selected for a $100 iTunes Gift card, on us. Make sense? Open to US iTunes accounts, only, please.

Hit the jump for the form and your chance for a free $100 iTunes Gift Card.

The form should load below, but we’ve found out it will fail for some users. If it doesn’t load, you can find it here conveniently for all browsers and devices.

Hector: Badge of Carnage — Episode 2 Review

iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad

Sometimes an anti-hero can just prove to be too much for even the player to overcome.

The gaming industry is an interesting beast that has gone through numerous transformations over the past two to three decades. A perfect example of this is the point-and-click adventure genre, which up until about three years ago was deader than a ghost town on Halloween. Don’t get us wrong, there is a great history to the gameplay style, it just had previously flourished in the floppy diskette era. Luckily for all of us, Telltale Games has seen to it that not only are adventure games seeing a revival, they are stronger than ever. The only question is whether Hector can live up to its superior predecessors, or if it is dead on arrival.

If one were to try to describe a stereotypical police detective most would expect to hear something about bravery, being a kind, upstanding citizen, or even a word or two about humility. Hector, who also happens to be a detective, is none of those things. Some might even say his is the antithesis of the stereotype. He is crass, rude, bumbling, and downright depraved, yet somehow this anti-hero numbskull is the main character in Badge of Carnage: Episode 2. Sadly, his personality is actually the strongest part of the game and that isn’t saying that much.

The game picks up right where Episode 1 left off, with Hector at gunpoint and things not looking well for our dingbat of a hero. Using a keen eye and a little ingenuity, players can escape this harrowing scenario and live to solve another case. This may be fun and dandy to some folks, but this second installment in Hector’s quest lacks any serious direction or overall drive. Another issue is the essential dialog trees that the genre is known for. Where previous Telltale games have banked on clever writing to deliver on humor, Badge of Carnage seems hellbent on shocking the chuckles out of you. Unfortunately it toes the line of decency and then sprints long past into the land of senseless and unnecessary vulgarity.

It is hard enough to remain interested in a game when your hero is the opposite of likeable, but when something begins to feel like it is trying way too hard to be edgy, the wheels begin to fall off the wagon. Where other Telltale games have been so successful in establishing a rich world that players want to be a part of, Badge of Carnage: Episode 2 does the exact opposite. This is one case that may be better off going cold.

Listen To Websites Rather Than Read With Voice Reader Web

It’s difficult to overstate just how important our eyesight is to every day activities. While the likes of iOS devices will be incredibly restrictive to those who are blind, apps like Voice Reader Web ensures that the partially sighted have a much needed tool to help them read web sites.

Voice Reader Web is a regular web browser with a very important feature: it can read all text displayed aloud in up to 21 languages with 32 different voices. It means that users can understand what’s on a website without reading it themselves, making it incredibly useful for the partially sighted as well as those who just want to listen in rather than read.

An added benefit comes from Voice Reader Web‘s ability to save sites for offline viewing/listening at a touch of a button. As part of the browser’s text mode, images and advertising can be faded out to ensure the focus is on the text helping those trying to read the information displayed.

As a disability aid, Voice Reader Web looks to be fantastically useful. There are other benefits to for the likes of car drivers or people who just want to relax and listen to a website rather than read huge amounts of text. Audio segments can be saved in a variety of different formats too for later consultation. It’s an all round useful app indeed.

Voice Reader Web is out now priced at $1.99. In-app purchases are available for those wanting to buy different voices. Each is priced at $0.99 per voice.

Veggie Skewering Delights From Aww, Eggplant!?

One of the most exciting things about the app store is how its relative ease to get published means that so many new and aspirational developers can get noticed. This is clearly the case when it comes to Aww, Eggplant!? a game that comes from three students at Carnegie Mellon University’s Entertainment Technology Center.

Offering addictive physics based skill gaming, Aww, Eggplant!? is all about skewing as many vegetables as possible within the time limit. The name comes from the fact that players must not skewer any eggplants otherwise it’s game over! I’m a fan of eggplant but I’ll forgive this game that one thing as it does look like an entertaining way of passing the time.

Four different mini-games pop up in order to mix up the action and an entertaining soundtrack keeps the humor flowing. Plus there’s the ever welcome Game Center support making competing with friends and their high scores that bit easier.

Check out the gameplay video below. Aww, Eggplant!? is out now priced at $0.99 with a free lite version also available. I’ve got a feeling this one deserves to be a future hit.

C.H.A.O.S. Pro Review

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: BLUE SKIES
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

This helicopter combat sim has lots of features and tons of content.

Developer: SKY JET INTERNATIONAL

Price: $5.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0.1
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 3GS

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.88 out of 5 stars

C.H.A.O.S. stands for conceptual helicopter assault operational simulator, and that really sums the game up pretty well. This is a helicopter combat simulator, and in it players can take control of various military helicopters from all over the world. Players will undertake various missions in the game’s single player mode and will also have the chance to take on other players in the game’s multiplayer mode.

One of the most important aspects of any flight simulator — and one that can really make or break the game — is how it handles; that is to say, how does the player interact with the game and pilot the aircraft featured in the game. C.H.A.O.S. walks a the thin line that all iOS flight sims are forced to walk. Making the controls too complicated makes it impossible to enjoy the game on a touchscreen, but make the controls too simple and the game loses the challenge of a real flight sim. Fortunately the developers have done a fair job at finding a good balance between sim and arcade controls. The player tilts the device to tilt the chopper. Tilting forward tilts the craft forward and it moves forward, tilting back makes it tilt and move back. Tilting left or right will turn the craft in that direction. With the left thumb, the player controls a virtual joystick with which they can make the helicopter gain and decrease altitude, and strafe left or right. The right thumb controls the weapons. These controls are responsive and flying the helicopters in the game becomes very possible with a bit of practice.

Weapons in this game include machine guns, missiles, and guided missiles. The guided missiles can be locked on to targets while the other weapons are unguided and must be aimed, which is often not an easy task. By winning battles and finishing missions, players can earn money and experience which they can use to purchase new helicopters and upgrades that will further increase their power of destruction. Single player missions include several different variations on a few different mission types: dogfighting, piloting, attacking enemy positions, and defending friendly positions from enemy attack. Each type is fun and challenging in its own way, making for a deeper flight sim experience that one might expect from an iOS title.

The game looks great as well. The environments, while a bit on the small side, are well designed and varied enough to keep things interesting game after game. There are times when it is difficult to find a neutral position for the device to keep a helicopter still for a moment. There is no way to change this in the game’s options so players are sometimes forced to tilt their device at strange angles to successfully pilot a craft. Generally this doesn’t present much of a problem, though, and the game doesn’t suffer much as a result. C.H.A.O.S. provides a robust helicopter combat sim experience and while it sometimes feels a bit more arcade-like than other sims, it take full advantage of iOS capabilities and uses them well.
