OSnap! Ultimate Time-Lapse Review

By
on September 20th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: EFFORTLESS TIME-LAPSES
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

OSnap! streamlines the pain of time-lapse video creation. Despite some hefty nuances necessary to properly utilize this app, it might inspire some new movie makers to get off the couch and into the field.

Developer: Justin Cegnar
Price: $2.99
Version: 1.1
App Reviewed on: iPhone 4

iPhone Integration Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Re-use/Replay Value Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.83 out of 5 stars

Time-lapse movies are extremely popular in the world of photography, yet the iPhone is just now starting to see quality apps in this genre. OSnap! hopes to take what is currently on the AppStore and perfect it, thus making it the defacto app for anyone looking to use their iPhone for creating time-lapses while out on the town.

Using OSnap! is relatively easy, and that is because the user interface is extremely intuitive. Once a new project is created, items such as orientation, what camera to use, interval to take shots, delayed timer before the shooting begins, and many other options become available for the project. These can all be set as defaults as well so every new project will use the same settings.

Junk photos can be deleted out of the photo stack, individual photos may be shared to common social media outlets, or sent to the camera roll. Finally, exporting the images to a time-lapse comes with niceties such as being able to add music to the finished product and setting how many frames are played in one second. When the video rendering is done, it may be saved to the iPhone, or shared on Facebook/Twitter/YouTube. This app is packed full of features that make creating time-lapses painless.

Not all is perfect, however. During my testing, I found that I had to reboot the phone before setting up for a time-lapse longer than ten minutes. The app would then crash while processing my 600 – 1200 photos. The biggest hitch, for many users, will come with the fact that the phone cannot take calls, SMS notifications, or updates from various apps as these will end the video export process. The best results come from enabling Airplane mode while shooting photos or rendering the finished video. This can lead to not having a phone for 60 minutes or longer while this app does its job. Don’t forget to reboot after this process is completed, as the phone just ran a marathon to kick that video out.

Despite all the nuances that go into making this app work, it is still a high recommendation for anyone who seriously wants to dive into the world of time-lapse movies. The interface is intuitive, the phone does most the hard work, and all the user has to do is be patient while the work is getting done. There is a free version that is recommended to check out before purchasing the full app.

Warp Dash Review

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: SLICK
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Collect triangles and use them to warp as fast and as far as possible while avoiding obstacles.

Developer: SGN

Price: $0.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0.1
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 3GS

Graphics / Sound Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars

In Warp Dash players pilot speedy ships through a futuristic obstacle course. The point of the game is to pilot the craft as far as possible through a randomly generated grid of huge shiny blocks and bright lights and to score as many points as possible in the process. Players control their ship by tilting their device back and forth to make the ship veer left or right. While trying to avoid obstacles, players earn extra points by collecting triangles that are placed around the grid and delivering them to warp gates that are also placed around the grid. Extra points for triangles are only rewarded if they are delivered to a warp gate. At the same time, the warp gate launches the craft into the air and over any obstacles for a quick distance boost.

The gameplay is very simple and uncomplicated, which makes it a great game for mobile platforms. Players can get in a few quick games almost any time the mood strikes them. There are three difficulty levels in Warp Dash. The only discernible different from one difficulty level to the next is the speed at which the ship travels and the ship’s maneuverability. However, the developer has made the strange choice to only include the beginner and intermediate difficulty levels with purchase of the app, with the expert difficulty level needing to be unlocked via in-app purchase for $0.99.

The game controls very well and though tilt controls are notorious for limiting fine control, there seems to be enough sensitivity built into the controls that players can navigate obstacles with ease. Unfortunately, there is no way for players to adjust the tilt sensitivity at all, so they’ll need to adjust to the games sensitivity settings instead.

Warp Dash is a gorgeous game with high fidelity graphics that run smoothly even during fast gameplay. The game’s techno music fits the tone perfectly and even adapts to what is happening in the game. This is a simple game, to be sure, but it is focused and lots of fun to play which makes it a game worth playing.

Paparazzi Photo Review

By
on September 20th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★☆☆ :: SPEEDY
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Bordering on too simple, Paparazzi Photo is a useful way of taking photos very, very fast.

Developer: Functional Insight
Price: $0.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 4

iPhone Integration Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars
Re-use Value Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.17 out of 5 stars

I’m not convinced it’s possible to be simpler than Paparazzi Photo for it is incredibly simple to use indeed. It’s a photography app that focuses on one very simple task: taking photos quickly. That’s literally all there is to it.

Upon opening the app, there’s no actual interaction or user interface. It immediately starts taking photos – four to be exact. The purpose behind this is to be able to catch images fast. Ever tried taking a cute picture of a child running? A new puppy? They don’t have the decency to stay still to pose, they’re too busy having fun. The speed in which Paparazzi Photo loads means photos are taken almost instantaneously. The risk of missing much is low. To counteract one problem with taking photos of quick action subjects – blurriness – the app takes four photos of a situation in order that the best photo can be picked out.

The actual settings for Paparazzi Photo are hidden away in the Settings app. They’re simple still though, just affecting how many photos are taken, whether the flash is switched on and the quality of the images taken. While the settings suggest that after taking four photos, the app determines the best shot and saves it to the Photo Album, this doesn’t seem to happen. A shame as this would have been a particularly useful feature and would have saved the need for editing apps after initial shooting.

It’s difficult to figure out what to compare Paparazzi Photo to. Something like ProCamera offers similar functionality but it isn’t quite as fast to load. However it does offer many more features. Paparazzi Photo feels like an utility app, one that’s handy to have on standby for certain ocassions but one that needs the back up of an editing app afterwards. At $0.99 it’s quite well priced though and worth a go for anyone expecting to take plenty of fast shots.

Voice Activated Unit Conversion From Convert Gold

I’m a big fan of voice activated technology. Not just for the futuristic feel of being able to speak at a device but for the potential mobility benefits for those who aren’t as physically able as they would like to be. Convert Gold, rather than changing anything possible into gold (if only), enables its users to make unit conversions by speaking at the app rather than tapping the relevant buttons.

Supporting 12 different unit types, Convert Gold might not be the most comprehensive of unit convertors but it offers all the most important ones comprising of angles, area, energy, force, length, power, pressure, speed, temperature, time, volume and weight. All the user has to do is speak measurements such as ‘Tweleve feet in inches’ or anything else they can think of in a similar style and the app should provide the appropriate response.

Give it a try today. It’s out now priced at $2.99.

DragonVale Review

By
on September 20th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: ADORABLE
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Dragons provide a much sweeter free to play experience than the reality of houses and farms.

Developer: Backflip Studios
Price: FREE
Version Reviewed: 1.1
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 4

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3.25 out of 5 stars
Playtime Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.44 out of 5 stars

Unlike many other freemium and social gaming titles, DragonVale isn’t about building cities or successful farms. Instead it’s all about raising and nurturing dragons – a much more adorable proposition than building houses.

It’s the kind of theme that means DragonVale lends itself perfectly to the younger gaming market. It’s also worth any sensible parent disabling in-app purchases as DragonVale makes the allure of buying extra gems or cash very tempting.

You see, DragonVale is a bit of a slow burner. Unlike something like CityVille Hometown, there’s no huge focus on a structured experience. While a tutorial is very helpful, DragonVale is mostly about creating the world that the player wants to concoct.

As the tutorial explains, each dragon type requires a different habitat to live in based upon the element of the dragon. Plant and Fire habitats are the main types at first with Cold, Flower, Lava, Moss and Poison types unlockable further on through a mixture of levelling up and gem payments. Some special forms also emerge providing players figure out the best way of breeding such creatures, adding a great experimental element to the game.

Building up the park is quite fun but it can involve a limited amount of interaction. After a while, players mostly check in to feed the dragons, collect money and destroy some more scenery in order to build more habitats and other buildings such as a breeding area or farm. Everything takes time, even removing rocks or trees, meaning that this is a game that has a hefty time requirement in order to achieve great results.

This is where the in-app purchase side of things comes into play as it really does speed things up a great deal. The temptation to put some real money down in order to get further along in the game is extremely tempting. The social element of trading gifts and visiting friends via Game Center or Facebook lists certainly helps discourage things but it’s still tempting.

DragonVale is a charming and cutesy game but I’d love to see more of a mission structure to the goals. While goals do appear, it feels like some form of story might have been nice. Nonetheless, kids will love the satisfaction of watching their dragons grow and evolve. Breeding dragons and seeing the results is particularly fun with vivid graphics adding to the experience. Just steer them away from spending too much on gems when they get a little impatient.

Easily Searchable Movie Streaming From Fanhattan

I’m amazed that no one’s used the name Fanhattan before as it’s an excellent name for a celebrity/movie orientated website or app. This app does exactly what would be expected of it. It enables users to find movies and TV shows from old to new across various video streaming and rental services.

Supporting many different services such as Vudu, iTunes, Hulu Plus, Netflix, Blockbuster, Amazon Video on Demand and the ABC Player, this should be a definitive app for all US based entertainment fans. If the show or movie isn’t currently available to stream, Fanhattan will even state where it can be bought for shipping at a later date.

Search options means that not only is it easy to track down something particular but it’s easy to browse for new suggestions too. Content is grouped into genres like Newest, Top Rated, Critic’s Picks as well as Award Winners such as Emmys or Oscars. That’s not forgetting regular genres like action or fantasy.

Combining everything in such a way is a neat idea that no doubt iPad owners will be keen to try out.

It’s out now and it’s free to download. Don’t forget that the services it links to may incur further charges such as Netflix and acquiring items on iTunes. Fortunately, Fanhattan lists pricing in a detailed manner.

Flick Champions HD Review

By
on September 20th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: FLICKING FUN
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Chillingo packs 8 flick-sports games into one slick universal package.

Developer: Chillingo LTD

Price: $2.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0.0
Device Reviewed On: iPad 2

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 3.95 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.11 out of 5 stars

Flick sports titles have been part of an iOS gaming diet for as long as I've been playing. Chillingo collects some of the most popular and puts them in one package in Flick Champions HD. This title has four sports – soccer, tennis, basketball and hockey – available to play as soon as the game is opened. Earning experience points (XP) or in-app purchase unlocks the remaining four – bowling, archery, baseball and football.

Calling these all flick games is a bit misleading. Soccer and basketball use flicks, while hockey and tennis are more about sliding, but what all the games have in common is their simplicity. To score a player just needs to line up a good shot with a single finger and let go. The graphics are cute and fit the faux-sporting motif. The athletes and crowds are block-headed little men with big eyes and a fair amount of personality for people that might have been assembled from a Lego kit. The playing fields are basic, but well-defined. The music can be a bit grating, but the sound effects are charming, especially the cheering, chanting, even coughing from the stands. Each game has its own distinct gameplay and two basic modes – exhibition and cup. In exhibition mode, there are three difficultly levels from novice to pro and a head-to-head mode for single-device multiplayer action. The cups also have varying difficulty levels but must be completed in in order.

Soccer, the mainstay of this genre, is the sport I liked least in Flick Champions HD. It feels more like foosball on an oddly curved board. Basketball is also a flick game, and the most basic of the four starter games. Tennis is, of course, a two-player affair. Just line up a serve and then just keep a finger on the player to ensure he's in the right spot to return the shot. Hockey is basically air hockey and the fastest paced game. The crowd is rowdy and it's a lot more fun that guiding a paddle even if the mechanics are the same. It's safe to assume the other four games are much the same mix of flicking, tapping and fun.

There isn't much to pick on – the gameplay isn't deep, but it isn't meant to be. In the pure flick games, I would have liked a little more sensitivity to the strength of the flick – most of mine seemed to go the same distance and have the same impact regardless of my intended velocity – otherwise, the games worked as expected.

Flick Championship HD is eight above par flick titles in one universal package. It's definitely worth the pick up if even one appeals.
