This game purports to be a fast-paced strategy game where players control a fleet of ships trying to survive the onslaught of the Nautilids trying to attack the planet Novus. The game claims to have a rule set that is simple but still deep, so players can et into the game easily, while still allowing master strategists to use their skills to the fullest. The iPad version is a rewrite of the original game, featuring redone graphics in HD, a redesigned interface for touchscreen control, and gameplay tweaks to make the game be improved and user-friendly. The game will feature a 15 mission campaign and a 2 player multiplayer mode that takes place on one iPad. all bolstered by Game Center leaderboards and achievements.

This redone version will be available on the App Store this October.

Southern Californians and music fans alike should instantly recognise the name KCRW. It’s a public radio station that’s become increasingly popular thanks to its use of modern methods like podcasts and streaming Internet radio broadcasts in its efforts to educate music fans in the latest and greatest new acts. In the past, KCRW hosts have helped showcase the likes of Beck, Adele, Florence & the Machine, Coldplay, Dido and Massive Attack.

Now there’s an app from KCRW that aims to take ‘listeners on an audio adventure of artists especially selected by DJs’ from the station. Pretty exciting, huh?

KCRW Music Mine – an iPad only app – is dedicated entirely to music exploration using The Echo Nest’s music intelligence platform to track down the best new artists. The app offers up to 100 artists at a time with lists updated daily in tandem with the on air playlists for KCRW. Listeners who want to learn more can then find videos, photos, blog posts and more behind each artist as well as discover the musical talent.

The format of KCRW Music Mine lends itself to users who don’t have a lot of time on their hands for messing around with configurations. Intead it’s an app that’s simple to browse and quickly find something of interest.

For fans who just want to kick back and relax, they can jut tap the KCRW’s 24 hour, all music stream Eclectic24 and enjoy the music, or they can listen in to full shows by many KCRW DJs.

KCRW Music Mine sounds like the ideal companion for KCRW fans and a fantastic app for music enthusiasts keen to find something new to love. I can certainly see some lazy Sunday afternoons being lost to checking out new music.

It’s free to download so why not give it a try today?

Overtones Based Fun With The Official App

Heard of The Overtones? It’s near impossible to escape them here in the UK with their talented vocal harmonies featuring across the airwaves and TV stations. Now it seems they’ve spread their influence to the App Store with an official app rather originally titled The Overtones.

Based around their recent hit Gambling Man, the app features six games which all offer an Overtones-themed take on classic favorites with the aim to gain as much virtual cash as possible by placing stakes across each game.

There’s Duplet in which players must uncover sections of a photo and try to find matches of The Overtones clothing accessories, Darren’s Lucky Slots: a typical slot machine with an Overtones twist, rearranging game Timmy’s Tiles, Mike’s Treasure Wheel (a mixture of roulette and trivia), Mark’s Crazy Maze and Lachie’s Royal Derby with its simulated horse race.

Plus fans can enjoy two exclusive new tracks from the band and other content such as video interviews and high quality photos.

Looks like a neat mixture of gaming and fan service to me. Not bad at all for the $1.99 asking price.

Never Get A Parking Ticket Again (Hopefully) Thanks To myPark

Seemingly every time I park my car, I see someone else wandering around looking a little lost as they can’t remember where they parked. I’m quite fortunate that most of the time, I don’t have that problem. On the odd ocassion I do however, it’s pretty embarrassing and very much a waste of time. myPark sets out to stop that problem as well as ensure that its users will always get back in time before their meter runs out.

The app tracks the user’s movements from their car to their destination thus working out how long it takes to make the trip for future reference on the way back. It’s possible to then set how long it’s ok to park for depending on the parking meter or ticket system.

A series of reminders can also be added to ensure that users can always find their car again. These can be a short text description of the location, a photo of the surroundings, an audio note or the color and level of the car park itself.

Most conveniently, myPark informs the user when the parking time expires or when the walking time is equal to the time left on the meter. Finally, a way of always keeping track of the time without losing track during a meeting and getting caught out.

For a meagre price of $0.99, myPark could potentially save a fortune in parking tickets for forgetful car owners.

Turn Based Strategy RPG Fun From Tactical Warrior

If you are satisfied with your free trial, please sign-up today. Subscriptions without a plan would soon be removed. Thank you!

Newly released to the App Store is Tactical Warrior, a turn-based strategy RPG that reminds me of much of my formative years of roleplay gaming.

Offering fast paced turn based action, players get to battle the men and beasts of the land (which land, we don’t know) as they discover new items and level up their characters. 10 different classes of warrior are available, each offering a variety of attacks and different abilities. For the item hoarder, 60 items are available to acquire as well as a similar number of achievements to gain. It’s not surprising then that the single player campaign is so large with over 100 battles on offer here.

For the social gamer, hot seat based multiplayer is on offer too greatly extending the longevity of this title.

Want to know the best thing? Right now Tactical Warrior is available for free download. It’s only for a limited time though so get in there fast.

For further encouragement, check out the gameplay trailer below.

Wikly Review

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: SIMPLE, ELEGANT DESIGN
iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad

Wikly is elegantly designed for that specific someone that enjoys a simple, aesthetically pleasing interface and a weekly, time table view of their schedule.

User Interface Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

We all have various methods of organizing our busy lives and schedules. Most of us use calendars and to-do lists of various sorts. Wikly is a weekly calendar app that also throws in to-dos. Wikly is elegantly designed for that specific someone that enjoys a simple, aesthetically pleasing interface and a weekly, time table view of their schedule.

What drew my eye to Wikly was the simplicity of the schedule, while still having the ability to edit details like with the built-in iPad calendar app. Adding an event is as simple as tapping and holding where the event starts and dragging to where it ends. After that, a popup with the details of the event becomes available. Basic calendar features like notes, location, repeating, and alerts are all available. One of my favorite features is that a to-do can be dragged into the calendar area to become an event. The color schemes that Wikly provides are great but I wouldn't mind the ability to create a custom color scheme. A small, but significant, detail I noticed with the color schemes is when the color scheme is changed, all events shift to a new corresponding color with the new color scheme. So if events are color-coded, they stay color-coded even when the scheme is switched. Navigation between weeks is easy, but not so easy that it can be done accidentally (three finger swipe). And moving, copying, cutting, and pasting of events all feel natural: tap and drag to move, tap and click copy to copy, tap and hold to paste.

There were a few problems that made my experience with Wikly less than perfect. Sometimes, when I switched between weeks, the app disregards the start and end time settings I made for the timeline (I set it to start at 7AM and end at 12AM). The app would stretch to about 1AM to 12AM. I found the resizing a little annoying and couldn't get it back to my settings without restarting the app. Also, while it's great that the events sync to the calendar app on the iPad, it also inherits a problem that bothers me with the iPad calendar app: multiple calendars. With the iPad calendar app, a new calendar can't be added without the help of a computer calendar program (iCal/Outlook/etc). For someone who only uses mobile calendar applications like me (iPad and iPhone), it leaves me dependent on my computer for adding new calendars when I otherwise wouldn't need it.

Despite the few problems I had, Wikly is well worth the $1.99 for anyone who prefers a weekly calendar.

Dogs are great. Cuddly, sweet, faithful and never judgemental. How intelligent are they though? Dog fans may now be able to figure out this very important question thanks to a new app by the name of Dog IQ.

According to the app, dogs have different kinds of intelligence just like humans do. These types are: problem solving ability, social intelligence, awareness, sense and the ability to learn and adapt. Dog IQ helps determine how mentally adept the user’s dog is by providing a well rounded overview of all of these types.

Each test offered by the app consists of 11 simple and fun questions testing the above abilities. Taken from a pool of 30 questions, there’s enough room for trying the test numerous times. Indeed it’s encouraged with a history page allowing users to monitor their dog’s performance over time.

Dog IQ looks to be a fun entertainment app to finally see if dogs really are smart or not. It’s out now priced at $0.99.

Band of the Day Review

iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Discover and explore a new band through tons of content every day.

iPhone Integration Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.17 out of 5 stars

Band of the Day is a subscription based app where the first week of use is free and each subsequent month costs $0.99. Users can also purchase an annual subscription to the app for $9.99.

Finding good music is no small task and wading through the floods of reviews available online and in print can be a daunting task for anyone looking for some good music that’s new for them. Some people might have a really hip friend who can tell them about all the good music out there, but those kind of culture mavens are hard to come by and the rest of us need some help in another form. This is where the Band of the Day app steps in. This app highlights a different band every day of the year, and while just learning the name of a great new band everyday is helpful this app goes so much further and provides a wealth of information on each band every day.

This app consists of a calendar from which users can pick any day. Once a day is picked, that day’s highlighted band will be displayed. Things like bios, reviews, interviews, social media mentions, videos, and even a few full length tracks to preview are included for each highlighted band. Having all of these things compiled in one app with just one new band highlighted every day makes finding, learning about, and enjoying new music so easy. Users can also go back and view the content for any highlighted bands from the current and preceding week.

The interface looks fantastic, but it is a bit complicated and it takes a little while to get familiar with it. The content for each band streams really well and the quality is great for audio and video. This is a great app for music lovers always in search of new bands to check out. Though there is a subscription fee, the content is well worth the price for those looking for a service like this on their iOS device.

Learn To Achieve Financial Freedom With Life Or Debt

An increasing amount of people are saddled with debt with hardly a clue as to how to escape the vicious circle of accumulating more debt because they can’t afford to keep up ther repayments. It’s immensely frustrating and hugely disheartening for any person who’s just trying to take control of their finances but aren’t quite sure how to achieve that.

Fortunately there are ways to be educated in how to secure financial freedom. One such way is through the app: Life or Debt. It’s an app that’s mostly a series of video clips from Stacy W. Johnson, creator of the personal financial news series Money Talks. These clips educate users in under 2 hours just how to sort their financial life out through setting goals, developing spending plans, staying organized and cleaning up their credit history.

Users will be educated in how to keep track of how much they really earn and how much they owe, then work out a specific route for their needs. Much like a diet, Life or Debt won’t be a quick solution but it will ensure that users of the app truly understand how to never be in debt again.

Priced at $4.99 for a limited time only, it seems like a small price to pay for solving money woes.

Street Fighter II Collection Review

By
on September 21st, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: STREET FIGHTING, MAN
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Street Fighter II Collection contains 3 versions of the fighting game that serves as the progenitor of many modern fighting games.

Developer: Capcom
Price: $3.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPod touch 4

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars

Street Fighter II Collection, despite the slightly awkward name, is an accurate name for this collection of three different iterations of the fighting game that has defined an entire genre for the past two-plus decades. The collection comes with the original Street Fighter II, Champion Edition which adds the four boss characters from the original as playable characters, and Hyper Fighting, which plays like a hyper-caffeinated version of Champion Edition with some new character colors and additional gameplay tweaks.

The first concern that pops up when one thinks of the original Street Figher II games on iOS is the controls. Street Fighter IV was rebuilt for iOS, but Street Fighter II Collection is a bunch of emulated versions, so tweaking the controls would be more difficult. Quite remarkably, the controls work well. There are options to use 2 punches and 2 kicks, or all 3 punches and kicks, and to use a series of special buttons that will execute special moves in concert with a direction on the joystick, which works identically to the one from Street Fighter IV. This is definitely a game that works far better on a touch screen than it ought to.

My recommendation with the controls is to not use the built-in special buttons; they clutter an already-busy screen, not to mention that they make executing special moves almost too easy. While the computer loves to cheat, and thus may be morally justified in some cases, they should absolutely be disabled for multiplayer. Characters like Blanka and Guile who rely on charging moves still have an advantage over characters who require quarter-circle and diagonal motions in order to succeed. As well, having all three games in one collection seems like a bit overkill. Street Fighter II just serves as a history lesson, as it is inferior to the Champion and Hyper Fighting editions that come with extra characters. The only real choice comes between the speed added by Hyper Fighting, though there are some other differences, like Blanka getting an additional special move not in the other versions. While the game has local multiplayer, it would do very well to have online multiplayer similar to Street Fighter IV Volt‘s! The lack of any kind of iPad support for any of Capcom’s Street Fighter releases is a shame as well.

There’s a reason why these games keep getting re-released on newer systems, it’s because they’re classics. The rules and mechanics that these games introduced are still the basis of most fighting games to this day, and they are more than just a history lesson; they’re still very fun to play. Fans of the Street Fighter franchise looking for a portable version of this classic or those who may have gotten in to Street Fighter IV would do well to check this one out.
