Puzzles are personally gratifying on many levels. They honestly just make me happy. It is like scratching my brain. Or if there was some kind of brainwash like mouthwash, puzzles would be the glorious minty/burny kind. Sort of painful but worth the refreshing feeling in the end. Punch A Hole is my off-brand minty brainwash start to the day.

The controls are intuitive: just swipe a finger to hit the cue balls with the pool stick. The objective (also intuitive): colored balls go into the corresponding colored pockets. But that is where the intuitiveness stops and the gray-matter starts bubbling. The balls can only stop rolling by settling into the holes that the player punches into the board. The trick is that the less holes the player punches, the more points go on the board. Beauty in simplicity. As the player completes new levels, new tiles and pockets appear with different actions.

These puzzles are a serious challenge. The difficulty goes up and down with the introduction of new elements. I am not kidding either when I say that these puzzles are serious cranial work. With 100 puzzles to solve, multiple ways to solve them and 23 Game Center achievements there is the potential for seemingly endless playability, especially if the creator keeps adding new challenges.

There is not much to the graphics, but if there were I am afraid it might take away from the game and the clean and well constructed indie feel. I love uncluttered sound effects, and the sound of the cue balls clicking and swishing is as gratifying as hearing rapid keyboard clicks. Not a traditionally beautiful sound, but to a technophile the sound of someone typing with intent is like eavesdropping on an important and exciting conversation. These simple sound effects and lack of “puzzle music” add a gentle excitement that gets my neurons firing.

Punch A Hole is a no-frills puzzler that even the seasoned gamer will find brain tickling. The gameplay is straightforward and fun, the learning curve is quick for each new element, and the challenges tough. Add Game Center challenges to the list and we have ourselves a new go-to game.

Instapaper Gains Huge Update In The Form Of 4.0

Instapaper is one of those ‘can’t live without’ kind of apps. Considered one of the best apps out there, one of the first inductees in our App Hall of Fame, Instapaper is the app to buy for those users who want to save articles for offline reading. It’s especially fortunate that regular support for the app is still there with the latest update (4.0) providing almost as big a list of changes as 3.0 did earlier this year.

Creator of Instapaper, Marco Arment has listed the full array within the update but here are the highlights.

Most pivotal for iPad owners is the complete overhaul of the iPad browsing interface for the app. Instapaper users can now enjoy a much more touch-friendly grid interface which promises to be easier and more attractive to look at. iPhone users get to enjoy a restyled and unified appearance that’s easy to use.

Other aesthestic changes are afoot with the reading screen no longer showing the top status bar by default amongst other things. Articles from many sites now display the site title, author name and published date were available.

True hardware brightness control is now possible thanks to iOS5, immediately protecting sensitive eyes when reading at night.

Selecting text and tapping define now enables users to look up terms in Wikipedia at the touch of a button and happily residing alongside the offline dictionary.

Articles can now be multi-selected, making archiving, deleting or moving to folders enmasse quick and easy.

Adding some social features to the mix, users can now view, via the Friends panel, all links posted to their Facebook news feed, Twitter timeline or Tumblr Dashboard.

The biggest change of all, however, is the new search feature available as part of a $1/month subscription service. Called Search Subscription, it adds server-side searching of the full contents of every article users have ever saved. It’s understandably powerful stuff and makes Instapaper even more useful than before.

Check out the full list of changes on Marco Arment’s site.

FilmWise Invisibles Review

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: REMOVE ACTOR INSERT FUN
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Players can test their movie knowledge to see if they recognize movie scenes with some important details missing.

Developer: FilmWise, LLC

Price: $0.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 3GS

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars

Ever wonder if a film would be better with different actors in it? How about with no actors in it at all? While FilmWise Invisibles doesn’t actually answer these questions, it does ask the question of whether or not players would recognize popular movies if all of the actors were removed.

FilmWise Invisibles is a movie trivia game in which players are asked to identify the names of films based on still images pulled from various movies that have had all of the actors removed. The game is quick and easy to play. An image from a movie is shown, but all traces of the actors have been removed invisible man style. All that remains is the actors clothings, props, and sets. By referencing these clues with their movie knowledge, players must guess the title of the movie.

Testing players’ film memory is only half the fun of this app, though. The images themselves are as enjoyable as the trivia. Each image has been painstakingly touched up to remove every single actor; even the extras. The resulting image, lacking of any human presence, is a strangely beautiful thing to behold. Realizing this, the developer has included a function in the app where players can view the images of any movies they have guessed correctly while playing the game. Players can then mark their favorite images for quick viewing, and even save them to their photo library or share them via email.

There are a enough images initially included in the app that players will spend plenty of time figuring them out. Additional image packs are also available via in-app purchase to keep the trivia going.

This is a great film trivia game that is simple to play and has more to enjoy than just correctly answering questions. The game’s images are so well done, the effect is positively spooky. Film buffs will appreciate FilmWise Invisibles and they will really enjoy the images.

Edge Magazine Now Available Via Newsstand

Having been a long time subscriber to Edge Magazine, I’m pretty excited to see it be one of the first titles to reach Newsstand.

Available through the app, Edge Magazine promises the same fantastic experience as before. Famous for its intelligent writing and in-depth looks at everything gaming related from reviews to unearthing the latest in the world of game development, Edge Magazine makes for a fascinating read for gaming fans. It’s a mature change of pace from glossier magazines but never fails to intrigue.

The Newsstand edition offers enhanced online content with extra insight, related content and screenshot galleries. Linked to the website, if there’s anything that can add to the reader’s enjoyment on the website, the app lets the user know.

Pricing through Newsstand is pretty respectable with individual issues priced at $4.99, a 3 month subscription available for $12.99, 6 months for $21.99 and a 1 year subscription priced at a very reasonable $39.99.

It’s a veritable bargain, given the quality of the writing and a must buy for fans.

Noteshelf Review

Noteshelf Review

Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: SMOOTH
iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad

Noteshelf makes handwriting and notebook creation beautiful.

Developer: Ranki
Price: $4.99
Version: 4.1
App Reviewed on: iPad 2

iPad Integration Rating: 4.1 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.28 out of 5 stars

One of the things I love best about iPad – what made me find it so much more useful and frankly, impressive, than an iPhone – is that the multi-touch screen at this size gives me room to write in as fairly organic fashion.

There are dozens of handwriting apps that take advantage of this capability, often blending it with type, audio, or document annotation. But, few apps really just focus on recreating a paper and pen experience. While Penultimate tends to get the most buzz, my long-time favorite has been Noteshelf.

At the heart is a bookshelf where users can create personalized virtual notebooks with customised covers and paper types. There are 20 paper templates from lined and graph to day planners and designer looks and 15 cover options to give each notebook it's own look and purpose. Templates can be mixed in one notebook and for further customization Noteshelf can import hand-made templates from drawing apps.

With recently added in-app purchases, many of which I picked simply for their elegance or whimsy, the customization options go even further. The app has 17 different colored pens with scalable nibs, as well as eight highlighters whose width is also adjustable with a slider. These are tucked neatly into virtual trays that pull out when needed and slide back into the unobtrusive toolbar. There are also three erasers, a few emjois and photos can be imported from the library, or with an iPad 2 users can also snap a picture from inside the app.

Noteshelf was one of the first handwriting apps to include a wrist guard and it has always worked well. There is also a zoom feature allowing users to write in a big box and place the resized smaller text precisely. The app allows for copying and pasting to the iPad clipboard and pages or whole notebooks can be exported to Evernote and Dropbox, or saved as PDFs and image files.

I like to work in landscape mode most of the time, so I was thrilled when landscape support and special paper became available recently. But, since updating to iOS 5 and after reinstalling the app several times the landscape feature no longer works on my iPad 2. I was careful to ensure landscape was fully enabled on my device and within the app, but as you can see from the screenshot, the paper no longer rotates in the correct direction.

Notshelf has not, however, yet had its iOS 5 makeover. And since updates are frequent and diligent, and attention is paid to user concerns, I have no doubt this will be resolved soon. It still bears mentioning, however, as it's a major selling point. I'm hoping for iCloud syncing too.

Notwithstanding, Noteshelf has been and remains the most natural, eye pleasing and useful handwriting-centered app I've used. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Music Magazine SPIN Play Comes To Newsstand

Perhaps not quite as prominant amongst the plethora of iOS5 offerings is that of Newsstand providing what is, basically, iBooks for magazines and newspapers. One such magazine that has taken advantage of such a feature is that of music publication SPIN Play, providing news and reviews from SPIN.com.

SPIN is renowned for offering plenty of fascinating music based content through the website and magazine. This edition allows users to watch and listen to artists and their work as they read articles about them.

Individual issues are priced at $1.99 each with an annual subscription priced at $7.99. Each issue offers over 60 streaming songs and over 30 streaming videos to add the interactive touch to the reading experience.

AirPlay support has also been provided with the potential to view the dozens of exclusive video interviews and performances either through the app or via an AirPlay supported device.

Together, it should provide the most immersive experience yet for music fans who also want the enjoyment of a magazine aimed at their interests.
