Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: RETRO STELLAR
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Stardash is a trial platform with a Game Boy-inspired aesthetic.

Developer: OrangePixel
Price: $1.99

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Not too long ago, when it came to handheld gaming, it meant that games were to be played in decadent 4-color grayscale on systems like the Game Boy. Those nostalgic for these 20th century wonders, but afflicted with a bit of the 21st century ADD might find themselves intrigued by OrangePixel’s latest retro throwback: Stardash.

Stardash runs players through 40 levels, each of which is a gauntlet of tricky enemy placement and devious platforming segments. Though, the goal is more than just surviving the levels; the job is to collect stars by either completing a level before the clock reaches zero, or to collect all the stars in a level. There are also keys hidden throughout levels for the purpose of unlocking the temple at the end of each world.

The game uses virtual controls, but with only left/right movement buttons and a jump button, everything is very simple. The game is a universal app, though it feels kind of silly to play a game that looks like it’s straight out of 1989 on a powerful device with a huge screen like the iPad. The game also supports Joypad for remote control, and the simple controls work well. For a game where death is frequent, thankfully restarts are immediate. This is an element that is key to any trial-based game, that ability to get back in right away.

Many of the keys are hidden behind background walls, and unlike in a similar Game Boy-inspired title, 1-Bit Ninja, this feels more like cheap obfuscation rather than clever level design. Cloud-based saving would be great to restore progress, either through OpenFeint’s saves or through iCloud. It is a universal app after all, and those stars were difficult to earn on the iPad! I don’t need to earn them again on my iPod touch! The game also annoyingly doesn’t support orientation flipping at all.

Those looking for a trial platformer that will give them a taste of handheld gaming back that would devour alkaline batteries with aplomb will find a frustrating yet enjoyable trip down memory lane with Stardash.

Improve Family Communication With I’mOK

I don’t have children of my own but having spent plenty of time around my young cousins as they vie for increasing amounts of independence, I can see one such difficulty that parents face. It’s not just the independence of going out by themselves that’s the problem either. They want to sign up to Facebook and Twitter despite being too young to go on either, all thanks to the wonders of peer pressure.

I’mOK might not entirely solve all these arguments but it does do its darndest to minimize problems. The app is part social network, just for the privileged few and part way of parents keeping an eye on where their kids are going when they’re out. It’s not done covertly though, instead it encourages kids to share their lives more with their long suffering parents.

Kids can voluntarily share their location with parents in order to earn points which eventually lead to rewards, previously approved by the guardian. Nothing is done passively so it’s all done by the hopefully responsible child that’s keen to show off how trustworthy they are. It also means that parents can worry less, knowing that their kid will check in with them at the touch of a button.

I’mOK is a free app so well worth a look for any concerned parents or kids keen to show off how responsible they truly can be.

Gravinaytor Review

By

Our Rating: ★★★☆☆ :: OUT OF CONTROL
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

This popular flash game port will stick players to the walls in the name of science, but there are some issues with the “control group.”

Developer: Wild Games Studio Inc.
Price: $0.99
Version: 1.0
App Reviewed on: iPhone 4S

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 2 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.19 out of 5 stars

An array of hazardous test chambers. Platforming puzzles involving disorienting perspective shifts. An omniscient, creepy voice overseeing the entire affair. Does any of this sound familiar? If you're flashing on a popular, cake meme-spawning PC/console video game, don't feel bad; you're not alone. However, it also happens to handily describe Gravinaytor.

Gravinaytor, formerly a flash-based browser offering by Alnoor Games, drops the player into a side-scrolling, retro-styled puzzle-platformer where shifting gravity is the key component to solving each level. Each level's background is marked with various sections of moving arrows, indicating which direction gravity will pull the player. The iOS port sports five new levels, in addition to a level select menu that allows easy replay of previously completed stages for better completion times.

Unfortunately, what it doesn’t sport is good, responsive controls. Players have to choose between either tapping the screen to jump while tilting to run, or dividing the screen awkwardly into three sections, with the middle third controlling jumps and the outer thirds your left and right movement. Unfortunately, neither option works very well.

The tilt controls are simply far too imprecise for a game of this nature and render all but the easiest levels essentially unplayable. Meanwhile, the awkward placement of the large onscreen touch zones make standard actions, like platforming up a series of fixed alternating ledges, difficult for the non-ambidextrous among us. Replacing the huge, unwieldy touch zones with virtual left/right arrow keys in one corner of the screen and a dedicated jump button opposite them would have been the way to go here. Go ahead and keep the tilt controls in there, though; having more options is never bad. Also, it gives the hardcore something brutal to challenge themselves with. They love that sort of thing.

The pacing also seems uneven, with some levels essentially playing themselves, while the next could leave me wanting to fling my iPhone at a wall in frustration. It feels like the newly added stages are inserted randomly into the old sequence of levels with little consideration to how they affected the flow.

Likewise, the simple, retro visuals and soothingly appealing electronic soundtrack are undermined by the annoyingly repetitive voice samples of the odd child-voiced computer overseeing the entire affair. An option to disable it that didn’t involve shutting off all off the sound would be appreciated. And even when left on, it's totally unnecessary to have the same line about buttons and cats play in every single test chamber that happens to contain a button.

Ultimately, the iOS version of Gravinaytor is a basically good game suffering from a case of bad port-itis. It still has some genuinely fun moments, but they're tucked inside questionable controls that fight the player every step of the way. Unfortunate, but nothing a good update can't fix.

The hype for the first free to play mobile MMO, Conquer Online, continues to build. Not content with there being just one sneak preview trailer, a new trailer detailing more information about the gameplay within Conquer Online has been released.

Gameplay looks like it’s been optimized pretty well for the iPad with touch based controls working well and keeping action easy to get to grips with. Hopefully the graphics will remain as fast paced and lag free as depicted here. The social features have also been expanded upon with the potential to dance, chat, hug and kiss other players in order to develop friendships, love or even marriage in the game world.

Only time will tell how Conquer Online fares on the iPad but with the promise of being the first free to play MMO and the already solid userbase of 10 million fans of the game, it’s looking pretty good.

Conquer Online will be released later this Fall.

Angry King Kong Review

By

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: SNOT-FILLED FUN
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Unique game that pits King Kong against armies of tiny foes. Using bodily functions as weapons, Kong must travel across great distances and battle against various types of human enemies to win the love of the woman who fears him.

Why is King Kong so angry? Simply put, he is in love with a human woman and thousands of little warriors want to kill him. I think I would be a little upset as well. Lucky for King Kong, he has help from players who assist in defeating the armies who seek his destruction. Using his snot and other bodily functions as weapons, Kong must battle his way through swarms of foes in an attempt to earn the love of the girl who fears him.

The gameplay is pretty straightforward. Using a finger, players must fling King Kong's snot towards his enemies to defeat them. This took a little getting used to, but I soon learned how to most accurately defeat the attacking armies. Each level progressively gets more difficult. Levels start out with simple island warriors with spears to armored men with guns and cannons. Similar to Plants vs. Zombies, enemies come in waves with each level containing three waves. Stars and points are awarded depending on how well players do during each level.

I found that the difficulty of the levels advances rather quickly. Luckily floating balloons carrying special weapons, health boosts, and protective snot bubbles provide some help during battles. The balloons must be shot down using Kong's snot. As points are awarded, upgrades and additional bodily functions can be purchased to better equip Kong for his ongoing war.

The sound and graphics are good and I loved the artwork. However I did find the game to be rather repetitive. I got tired of making the same gesture to attack over and over. I also noticed that the speed of each attack is somewhat limited to the elasticity of Kong's snot. This means that I was unable to attack as fast as I would have liked to. This could be a user error on my part, but I still think the attacking power and frequency is limited.

Overall I thought this was a fun game. It's only $0.99 right now so it's a fair price for what it offers. I thought the gameplay was very clever and it was nice to finally be on King Kong's side instead of fighting against him like we see in the movies.

We got a chance to go hands on with a few new titles from Ubisoft. Let’s take a look at the most casual title, Monster Burner.

Monster Burner is a casual puzzle shooter where you send fireballs up the screen to burn the advancing monsters. Part Puzzle Bobble, part Space Invaders, Monster Burner has 40 levels, power-ups (spells), and enough interesting social features to keep you interested for a while.

In our short look at the app, due out next week on November 3rd, we were pretty impressed. The game offers an interesting take and we’re looking forward to the release.
