Wall Of Sound offers a more attractive way of browsing all the latest music hits than simply looking through iTunes. The Wall Of Sound in question is a screen full of images displaying all the music that can be discovered via iTunes. In each case, the image leads to a preview of the track and then ultimately the option to buy the song from iTunes. For those who already own the revelant track, they can play it via the app.

With email and social networking sharing features as well as AirPlay and background play functionality, Wall Of Sound has it covered on the essential features front. Users in need of a random selection can just shake the iOS device to get a different bunch of tracks making it ideal for new inspiration. It looks particularly splendid on the iPad screen and is very easy to use.

Wall Of Sound is out now and it’s a free, universal app.

Race Of Champions Review

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: VROOOOOOM
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Race of Champions is a great dive into a racing event that doesn’t get as much gaming coverage as others.

Real Racing 2 has competition on its hands. That’s the most striking thing to come to mind when looking at Race of Champions. It’s a bit of admitted hyperbole, as there’s plenty of room for two excellent racing games on the App Store, but it’s an easy way to explain that Race of Champions is rather good.

Based upon the real life event of the same name, Race of Champions is a racing event covering multiple disciplines. Rather than just testing drivers in the same car type, they’re pitted against each other in numerous different vehicles in a head to head battle for victory. It’s an ideal premise for a racing game and one I’m surprised hasn’t been implemented in a more mainstream way before this.

It’s immediately obvious how visually appealing Race of Champions is. While the crowds may seem a little flat, the cars themselves are pretty gloriously designed with each vehicle looking just how the real thing should look. Currently, there are five cars to use depending on the stage: the KTM X-Bow, popular family car VW Scirocco, RX-150, Solution F Prototype and ROC Car. It’s a varied bunch and a suitable selection to demonstrate just what the competition can offer. It is a little limited given the price and what Real Racing 2 offers but updates are promised with new cars to follow. Each vehicle feels sufficiently different to the last with the handling and physics behind them feeling appropriate.

Offering three different game modes, Race of Champions provides sufficient variety for the price. There’s a Duel Mode enabling players to challenge other real gamers in the online rankings as well as a Time Challenge mode, pitting racers against a ghost car in order to beat the best lap time. The real meat comes in the form of the Championship Mode with four different scenarios and four Championships at the ROC tracks in London, Paris, Dusseldorf and Gran Canaria.

It’s an entertaining and challenging selection, too. Unlike other racing games, this one takes some practice to truly become any good at. Fortunately, the choice of three control methods means that input isn’t a problem. Tilt based controls are the default selection but I found the tap control method, involving tapping to the left or right of the screen to steer, worked best for me. A virtual steering wheel method is also available.

I’d like to see more cars available in Race of Champions but as it stands, it’s a solid racing effort. With such a responsive handling engine and attractive visuals, Race of Champions is a great choice for racing fans looking for something a little different from the usual events.

Arcade Jumper Review

By

Our Rating: ★★★☆☆ :: A LITTLE JUMPY
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Arcade Jumper is a retro-inspired platformer with special features for the iPad.

Developer: BlackHive Media
Price: $1.99
Version Reviewed: 1.2
Device Reviewed On: iPod touch 4, iPad 1

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.13 out of 5 stars

Arcade Jumper is a platformer that uses a lot of visual callbacks to retro games, with a semi-endless platformer gameplay design. Players run to the end of a level, jumping and shooting enemies, trying to collect warp coins to activate the exit back at the beginning of the level. No, it doesn’t make much sense until the game is actually played. Players try to collect coins and tickets to play minigames, unlock characters, power-ups, and even an extra game mode.

It’s nice to play an endless game that’s more than just unstoppably running forward, like in many of these games. They’re still fun, but Arcade Jumper is a nice change of pace. There are plenty of visual references to classic games, and the very end of each level looks like it starts to glitch out, like an arcade game kill screen. For fans of remote control options, Arcade Jumper is a game to check out. The game, which is a universal app, supports iCade controls, along with Joypad support.

Arcade Jumper gets a lot wrong, structurally. First off, the random level generation makes no accounting for where the platforms are, leading way too often occurrences of where trying to hit a box to collect tickets or point bonuses is a way to a speedy death. It just shrieks “poor design!” The gameplay is just kind of monotonous, as levels don’t really change much, just the number of warp coins necessary to advance. As well, dying is so easy, and continues/extra lives so difficult to obtain that seeing the later parts of the game is practically impossible for all but the most dedicated player. As a particular iPad annoyance, the portrait orientation mode is nifty…but not as good as the landscape orientation mode, which is hidden in the extras menu. It doesn’t actually correspond to the actual device orientation, which is just particularly annoying if trying to play with screen mirroring.

There’s a lot that needs to be worked on in Arcade Jumper. I’m a fan of retro-inspired games; this one just has some issues. I like many of its concepts and use of external controls, but it just needs a lot of work before it can be something really great.

Simple Musical Creation Thanks to Tones

Lacking in musical talent? I know the feeling well. I’m what many people would call musically challenged despite desperately wishing I was able to create musical splendours. I’m going to have to settle for just writing words but at least Tones will give me a way of pretending I can create such works of art.

Tones is easy enough to use that even children should be able to figure it out. The user is presented with a grid of sound pads that can be activated by tapping on them. Each provides a way of producing sound through a selection of different musical instruments. Tempo can be adjusted to further change things up and a series of waves, cycles of sound, can be produced, too.

Placed together, Tones creates an unique form of music in a fun and fascinating way. There’s no way of recording just yet but it makes for an ideal, disposable form of creative expression. Just the kind of fun to have with young members of the family who love to see instant results.

Tones is out now priced at $0.99.

Monster Burner Review

Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: ADDICTIVE
iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad

Combining the shoot em up with pinball and pool style game mechanics is a fantastically addictive move for Monster Burner.

Developer: Ubisoft
Price: $2.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0.2

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.38 out of 5 stars

I’m not the biggest score chaser in gaming. I’m just not competitive enough to be fussed about being the best on online leaderboards, I’m happy just completing the game. That is until I played Monster Burner. Ubisoft’s latest foray into the iOS world is nothing short of exceptional, pitched perfectly to keep players playing until their iPad runs out of power.

Monster Burner manages to be both fast paced and strategic with players taking the role of a magician who must shoot fireballs at the flurry of monsters creeping down the screen. There’s a surprising level of depth to such an idea with the game successfully combining shoot em up, pinball and even pool elements. It’s thanks to a culmination of seemingly minor features that, once put together, creates a very potent title. While the player can just flick fireballs at individual monsters, it’s not long before mana resources, the main ingredient to throwing the fireballs in the first place, are depleted. It’s advantageous to line up shots to take out numerous enemies at once for more than one reason. A mana potion is supplied once taking out five foes at once. More importantly, points increase faster which means that other levels are unlocked more swiftly. As the game progresses, the player unlocks new benefits such as faster mana regeneration or a way of creating a temporary wall of fire.

It’s all pitched just right. Early stages are easy to complete but take longer to truly master and gain a perfect score. Strategy plays an important role as different enemy types require subtle changes in how to tackle them, plus there are princesses that need rescuing and avoiding. In some cases, shots can be bounced off the walls further gaining better score multipliers. Other times, it’s useful to hold a finger to the screen for longer thus creating a larger fireball to unleash upon the monstrous horde. It’s all simple yet so compelling and I’ve not even got to the best part: the leaderboard integration. Each level begins displaying the leaderboard but it’s how it’s implemented within the stage that makes the difference. Names pop up instead of a monster when it’s clear a score will be beaten making it somehow feel more personal. I found myself wanting to be better simply because of the knowledge that someone across the world would see my name as a target to beat.

Monster Burner is a fantastic mix of different game types ensuring that it will appeal to almost everyone. There’s even a special mode, alongside the numerous other levels, aimed at children. It’s a true must have for all iPad gamers.

TapBuy Deals Allows Users to Make Purchases Lickety-Split

Buying online has always been something of a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it’s convenient. On the other, there’s lots of potential for thievery. Of course, nowadays there are all manner of anti-theft measures in place and purchases have been made even simpler with payment info storage and the like. But what about those spontaneous instances of shopping need where there’s no computer present? Well that’s what TapBuy Deals is for of course.

TapBuy Deals is something of a dream come true for super-saving shopaholics. The app stores billing and shipping information using “bank-grade encryption,” so once the desired item is found it only takes a tap or two and the order is completed within seconds. For added security, it requires a PIN for each purchase so if the iPhone is lost or stolen no one else will be able to run up unwanted charges. But this ease of use coupled with security is only a part of the draw.

In addition to all that, TapBuy Deals will group purchases (from the same vendor, of course) together to reduce shipping costs. Sometimes this even leads to zero cost. On top of all that it also automatically finds coupons and applies them as needed, saving users the most money it can. Of course, they can also add their own if they’d like.

TapBuy Deals is sitting in the App Store right now for free. And my apologies for the phrase “lickety-split.” It’s just that the opportunity to use it comes along so infrequently I couldn’t resist.

Poker Pals HD Review

By
on November 3rd, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: PALLING AROUND
iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad

Poker Pals is an asynchronous multiplayer board game that borrows elements from poker.

Developer: Chillingo
Price: $3.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPad 1

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Poker Pals HD combines poker with Words With Friends. The goal is to lay down cards on a 7×7 board, trying to make poker hands. Hands range in value from 10 to 80 points, with a 10 point bonus for each card used that directly affects a hand. Gameplay is turn-based, as each player lays down a hand from the 1 to 4 tiles that they lay down. Players can play against Game Center friends, random opponents, the computer, or with local multiplayer.

Poker feels like a perfect fit for the randomness that entails many of these asynchronous multiplayer games; drawing cards just feels like a natural fit to this type of game. There’s an interesting ranking system that’s based primarily on earning achievements, though they are all naturally earned through gameplay, so they are more of an indicator of skill and experience than what it might seem to be. As a great plus, the full versions of the game allow for a theoretically unlimited number of games! As someone who regularly hits the limits of Disc Drivin’ games, this is an exciting feature.

Some of the rules don’t entirely make sense, like how some rows can’t be extended on. Basically, a card can’t be added to the end of a set of cards on the board, with a new hand played in a different direction; think like adding an S to the end of a word in Scrabble, then forming a new word in a different direction from that. Sometimes it can be done, sometimes it can’t. It makes sense to me at times, but then others, it doesn’t. It’s not entirely an intuitive ruleset. The lack of added value for higher rank cards feels kind of odd, as if this element of poker was left out entirely because it couldn’t fit; there’s just something that always feels odd about this not being the case, and I feel like I’m always trying to play higher-value cards when in reality, they don’t actually matter.

Poker Pals is an interesting take on asynchronous multiplayer games, is easy enough to get into with the core rules of poker, though the rules take a bit of acclimating to.
