Monster Shooter – Shooting Monsters in the Name of Kitten Safety

It’s one thing for slimy, slobbering aliens to go around stealing livestock. It’s something else entirely when they start pilfering cute little kitties. That’s crossing a line. On the other side of that line is a vengeance-fueled engine of mayhem and destruction hell-bent on recovering his lost friend while making his antagonizers wish they were never born. Or spawned. Or whatever the heck aliens do to reproduce. And his name is Dum Dum.

Gamelion has recently announced Monster Shooter, a soon to be released twin-stick shooter. Players will blast their way through all sorts of alien scum on three distinct worlds, featuring a humorous story and lots and lots of shooting. If they grow tired of the plot or structured level progression, there’s also a Survival Mode to put their skills to the test. And yes, the developers have mentioned that they’re already working on additional content which will be released as free updates in the future.

There’s no exact date for Monster Shooter‘s release just yet, but it should be out sometime this month. “… Within the next few weeks,” is the best I’ve got at the moment. Still, it looks funny and sounds entertaining. That combined with a non-existent price (read: it’s going to be free) makes it absolutely worth an inquisitive glance or two. Once it finally gets here, of course.

It’s tough to find new and exciting ways of educating children. Bringing subjects alive can make all the difference which is precisely where technology and, more precisely, the iPad can help. Courtesy of Emantras comes Frog Dissection and Cell and Cell Structure to make science that bit more interesting for middle school children.

Frog Dissection is a less messy and kinder to frogs alternative to the age old way of learning biology: dissecting a frog. The app offers vivid 3D imaging an helpful step by step instructions which help ensure that the app is an accurate simulation of the real thing. Interactive quizzes and plenty of information on the frog’s organs and an anatomical comparison with humans makes this an ideal tool for science fans.

Cell and Cell Structure continues the biology theme by teaching everything possible about cells, their structure and their functions. Attractive graphics keep things interesting and interactive flashcards and quizzes reinforce the knowledge.

They’re both out now. Frog Dissection is priced at $3.99 while Cell and Cell Structure is $1.99.

Audium Review

By
on November 11th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: ATTRACTIVE
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

A simple and minimalistic way of playing music albums.

Developer: Michael Pringle
Price: $0.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 4

iPhone Integration Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Re-use Value Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.33 out of 5 stars

Audium is both wonderfully simple and visually appealing. It’s a music playing app that’s quick and easy to use. So what makes it stand out from the competition, most notably the Music app already included with iOS devices? The fact that it’s just so darn elegant.

Using it doesn’t require any time spent figuring out complex controls or unintuitive displays. Instead, Audium displays the covers of each album, showing off the splendor of music artwork. Behind the albums is a wooden backdrop on the bottom of the screen, with the top simply displaying black to ensure that the artwork is most clearly viewed. Swipes to the left or right scroll through the albums with swiping downwards displaying the album name.

Controlling playback is just as simple yet effective with a double tap playing the album or pausing it. Swipes to the left or right move from track to track while a swipe up or down adjusts the volume.

Audium is as simple as that and highly effective due to its simplicity. There’s no sign of playlist options or anything complex like that. The experience is all about listening to albums easily. That’s not to say that there aren’t subtle nuances. The album cover fades to black & white when paused, for instance.

The only problem lies with the album art itself. For those who are very unorganized such as myself, it can create problems if not all the albums are well arranged with the appropriate artwork attached.

It’s a forgiveable flaw, though, as overall Audium excels at providing a minimalist music playing experience that still provides everything a user could want. In a world where everyone is so obsessed with personalized playlists, it’s nice to have an app that goes back to the whole point of albums: starting at the beginning and taking in the full experience. For this very purpose, it’s an ideal solution.

Whether it’s football season or March Madness, it seems like there is always something going on in the world of sports for rabid fans to follow. Luckily for them, the new PlayUp app, "the first social network app for sports fans," is here to help these people stay connected all through their mobile devices. It's like having a sports bar anywhere.

PlayUp tracks stats and real-time scores from the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS and college football and basketball games. International leagues like the English Premier League Soccer and Australian Rules Football are represented as well. Fans of a particular team can track their progress and interact with other fans in chat rooms while games are on. Soon users will also be able to answer trivia questions and play other games through the app. They have to do something during the off season.

PlayUp is currently available for free on the App Store. It sounds like the next best thing to having a portable tailgate party.

Slingshot Defender Review

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: SMASHING
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Defend your castle using massive boulders!

Developer: VAVA Interactive
Price: $0.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPad

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.88 out of 5 stars

One would think that someone rich/crazy enough to own a castle in a monster infested area might spend a little cash installing a decent security system. Not so with Slingshot Defender, as it's up to the player to beat back an approaching horde of various trouble-makers with nothing but a single slingshot. Luckily, or unluckily if you're a monster, this slingshot can fling rather large boulders.

Slingshot Defender is played from a top down perspective. At the bottom of the screen is a wall, which signifies the player's castle, and a slingshot. Tapping on the slingshot and pulling it back brings up a target reticule ahead, which can be adjusted when the player moves their finger around the screen.

When a monster enters the target reticule, all the player has to do is take their finger off the screen, releasing the boulder which will hopefully impact as planned. Occasionally the boulder will be replaced by a bomb, which has a large splash radius, as well as inflicting more damage on the target.

Every now and then a barrel will roll past, and it's well worth chucking a boulder at it. If the player manages to smash one they will be rewarded with a power-up. These can range from freezing enemies for a limited time, to sending a wave of fire into the field, which eradicates everything.

These power-ups are very useful, as although stage one starts off fairly sedate, the player will soon realise that this is just a warm-up. All enemies have their own set of stats based on speed, armour and damage. For example, a Grim Reaper has extremely low armour, but is very fast and will do substantial damage to the castle wall if the player lets one slip by.

After a few levels Slingshot Defender becomes pretty tactical, as the player must decide what enemy to focus on first, based on their damage ratings. Too many hits and the heart meter at the bottom of the screen will deplete, and it's game over.

Whilst the game isn't massively varied, it has that "one more go" factor that drags the player back in to push on and try and get further. Game Center support also adds longevity, and although there are only twelve achievements to unlock they will take a bit of time.

Slingshot Defender is the perfect example of bite-sized portable gaming. The player can pick it up at any time and play for as little or as long as they like without impacting their enjoyment.

A slew of games hit the App Store this week, and we’ll bring most of them to you in review form. but there were also a lot of apps that were overshadowed by the gaming bonanza. We look at five we think you’ll want to check out.

Meanwhile for iOS

A truly interactive comic book experience, Meanwhile for iOS takes users right into a comic by Jason Shinga where they control how the story unfolds, Jimmy, the protagonist finds a mad scientist with, what else, but a doomsday device and readers young and old can help determine the outcome of the adventure.

VocaLive for iPad

Ok we admit to some cynicism about this one, especially at the price, but if it does work a new world of Rebecca Blacks will be thrilled. VocalLive claims to work like auto-tune letting ever the most tone-deaf have their singing modulated to match the music’s pitch. If anyone tries it we’d love to hear what you think of the results.

Doodlecast for Kids

Kids not only draw with this app, it captures them in action during the whole creative process. Kids and parents can watch it back and even use it as an educational tool to help with writing letters and numbers. The app comes with 20 drawing prompts or kids can start fresh with their own ideas.

Photogene2 for iPhone

One of the best photo-editing apps, Photogene, which offers near desktop results has a new version. It supports the iPhone 4s and includes more robust editing tools, especially in the fine-tuning as well as extended export options.

Coach's Eye

Use the iPhone video camera in a new way – to record athletes in action for analysis later. We suggest you use a sturdy case if you use it behind the batter, but it takes a video and slows it own with a flywheel to find precise moments and allows coaches and personal trainers to mark up the video to help show what they are doing wrong, rather than just telling.

XenoCube SD Review

By

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: PERFECT MATCH
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Take XenoCube SD for a spin in 3D and feel like a Space Pharaoh.

Developer: Digital Embryo Studios
Price: $0.99
Version: 1.0
App Reviewed on: iPhone 4S

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.13 out of 5 stars

3D puzzle games have been around for quite a while now and, despite my deep and abiding love of puzzlers in general, I've almost never enjoyed them. Give me a basic 2D game and I'll sit enraptured for hours on end. Drop a third axis in, however, and within moments I'm frustrated, then annoyed, then switching to something else.

Thankfully, that wasn't the case with XenoCube SD.

The game's odd, "pseudo-Egyptian-in-space" design aesthetic is actually very appealing, even though it doesn't seem in any way connected to the name (or perhaps that's the other way around?). The music is orchestral and grandiose, with the synthetic strings feeling like they would be equally at home behind Prince of Persia or another game with a similar Middle-Eastern setting. Meanwhile, the visuals pop with electric colors and a neat 3D depth effect making use of the iPhone's internal tilt sensors that can be dialed back with a slider, similar to Nintendo's 3DS. The framerate can chug a bit during combo animations, even on my brand new iPhone 4S, but that's a very minor complaint that hardly detracts from the experience at all.

The gameplay is basic "match-three" puzzle style, but extending over all six sides of the cube. Swiping a finger sends the cube spinning, smoothly allowing access to multiple sides at once. Completing combos adds to the player's level meter, which refreshes the slowly draining energy bar when a new level is reached. After clearing four levels, the current stage ends and the next begins. Lather, rinse, repeat.

There are five different gameplay modes on offer. Zen mode pits the player against only the draining energy meter. Eye of Ra is like Zen, but more difficult, requiring faster thinking and quicker reflexes. Arcade fights against a timer, and Hyper mode is a focused 90 second rush to score as much as possible. There is a fifth Augmented Reality mode, which makes use of a printable AR card to place the cube in the "real world." I wasn’t able to preview this, as strangely it only seems to be supported on iPhone 4 and iPad 2, with the new 4S sitting out in the cold. Hopefully this will be rectified in a future update. It feels very weird to have the newest toys, with the upgraded camera and faster processors, and yet still be stuck with a downgraded feature set.

Perhaps it's the fact that XenoCube feels more like playing six 2D puzzle games at the same time, rather than dealing with depth and volume like many 3D puzzlers, that makes it so much more accessible. Regardless of the reason why, I'm not questioning it. XenoCube SD is really everything a person wants a puzzle game to be: fun, addictive, infinitely replayable. Having the whole thing wrapped up in a snazzy audio-visual package is just icing on the cake.
