Time Inc know how to make decent cookery apps. While Real Simple Recipes tackled how to make tasty meals in a short space of time and Cooking Light Recipes taught us how to cook healthy meals, MyRecipes Daily Indulgence deals with the kind of cookery that’s ideal with Thanksgiving ever nearer. As the title suggests, it’s all about desserts such as cakes, cookies, pies, frozen treats and even low-sugar treats.

Just like the previous apps, MyRecipes Daily Indulgence offers a plethora of delicious images conveying just what delights are available to cook or bake. Focusing on a dessert a day mentality, the app displays an ideal recipe for each day of the year. Every recipe has a seasonal feel such as November bringing with it plenty of pecan and pumpkin based treats. Users aren’t restricted to browsing by calendar date however, with the option of looking according to category or by searching via a keyword search. Each recipe lists some helpful tags such as whether they’re quick to make or ideal for children. Unfortunately, there doesn’t appear to be any way of looking items up via their tag.

Upon selecting a recipe, comprehensive instructions are provided with easy to read ingredients and numbered preparation tips ensuring that it’s easy to understand what needs to be done. Nutritional information is provided with many recipes, but not all, as well as videos for relevant techniques required. As with many apps in the series, MyRecipes Daily Indulgence includes sponsored recipes that are unobtrustive and frequently just as pleasant sounding as the others. There’s also the practically obligatory shopping list section of the app for those who want to use it as a tool in the store.

MyRecipes Daily Indulgence is a solid app that provides almost everything anyone would want from a dessert recipe app. I’d have liked to have seen more nutritional information available, as well as the ability to search according to tag. Despite such oversights however, MyRecipes Daily Indulgence is as enjoyable as the rest of the series and serves up some tasty treats just in time for the festive season.

Snuggle Truck, Owlchemy Labs’ iOS version of their game Smuggle Truck which initially served as a piece of wry social commentary on US immigration policy, has seen a great deal of content expansion recently. In particular, a custom level creator and sharing tools have been made available on both the iPad and iPhone versions of the game. While several hundred levels have been shared through the game, in an attempt to expand the audience, Snuggle Truck is now free to play as of the 1.6 update. Both the iPad and iPhone versions are now supported by IAP for a new truck, 5 new levels, extended powerup usage, and badges that can be shown off on the title screen, for the purpose of supporting the developers. The game has occasional ads that appear after levels for other apps, and these can be removed with the purchase of the $4.99 silver badge. Previous owners of Snuggle Truck need not fret; ads will automatically be disabled. As well, there is free DLC of 5 new levels, and a new “Freeze Time” powerup available for custom levels. The 1.6 update adding all these new features is available now.

Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: OK
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Monkonomix offers numerous different puzzle elements such as line drawing, color matching and physics puzzling.

Gameplay Rating: 3.25 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.44 out of 5 stars

Monkonomix is a curious combination of block based and physics based puzzling, with a hint of line drawing thrown in for good measure. The problem with such an interesting mixture is that it’s not as easy to figure out as it perhaps should be.

The core of the game focuses on a monkey and his drunken father in their efforts to gather rare gems for the Monkey King’s three queens. What this comes down to is that the player must solve numerous puzzles to progress. This is done by drawing gem shapes and letting them land in the monkey’s basket. Throw too many gems in and the poor monkey gets crushed.

Each of these gem shapes form different colors depending on their size, with the need to collect a set amount of each color to progress to the next stage. The basic primary colors are easily created while colors such as purple must be made through combining relevant gems inside the basket. This is where the physics of the game comes to the forefront. The player can tilt the basket, thus adjusting where a gem lands. There’s also the threat of fireflies which can destroy gems if they land on top of the insects. It’s a strange mix of game mechanics and something that isn’t explained quite as well in the tutorial screens as it could be.

What is there, once fully figured out, is quite a challenging puzzle game across 30 different levels between three stages. Each stage comes with its own twist so as not to bombard the player, with the first stage offering the basic mechanics, the second involving mixing of colors and the third with those pesky fireflies.

Monkonomix is an interesting title but one that struggles to compel. I found myself playing it more because I had to rather than because I was really enjoying it. While each gameplay element works well on its own, combined leaves a game that feels like it’s trying to be too many different things at once rather than just focusing on one strength.

How many bands can boast 167 studio tracks? More accurately, what band can boast such gems as We Don’t Need No Education, The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here? Only one – that band being Pink Floyd. Such an iconic band can now add an official app to their impressive portfolio, courtesy of This Day in Pink Floyd.

The app contains thousands of music facts covering 366 days of the year. There’s a guide to every one of the tracks released by the band, as well as more than 100 images, over 200 quiz questions and the same amount of trivia.

It’s the ideal companion for any Pink Floyd fan but it gets even better. There’s a newly restored video of their 1968 single, Point Me At The Sky, a free ringtone of Shine On You Crazy Diamond and two wallpaper screen images, including the Dark Side Of The Moon prism and the Wish You Were Here cover.

This Day in Pink Floyd is available now as an Universal app and it’s priced at $2.99.

iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

The Gameloft Gangstar series is back. Complete missions, earn money and wreak havoc all over the streets of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Gameloft games have been some of my favorite iOS games that I have played to date. Gangstar Rio: City of Saints is one game that both amazed me and made me a little sick to my stomach. It's amazing in that the graphics and the overall gameplay are very well done. However the unoriginal story and the amount of unnecessary, vulgar language and content left a very bad taste in my mouth.

Anyone familiar with the Grand Theft Auto games will feel right at home with Gangstar Rio. The world is a playground for all types of mischievous and illegal acts. See a car? Steal it. See someone you don't like? Pick a fight with them. The more illegal acts the main character, Angel, is involved in, the higher he boosts his wanted rating – cops will soon be on his tail to try to take him down. In between the story and the assigned missions, players can pick up additional side missions to make some extra money and gain experience.

The storyline is what is to be expected from this type of game. The typical gangster is on the run and seeking revenge. I thought the story was very unoriginal and it wasn't interesting to me at all. I often thought to myself, "I think I've played this game before." Those who have played Grand Theft Auto will probably agree with me there. The game tried very hard to make sure the content and dialogue was as vulgar and dirty as possible. I know what I’m getting into withe these games, but I was still disappointed by the great lengths the developers went through to make this game so unnecessarily coarse at times.

The controls are about the same as any other Gameloft title. I didn't have a very hard time managing the on-screen joystick and other buttons. Driving took a little while to get used to, but there are several control layouts available so I just had to play around with each option to find a comfortable fit. Graphics were very good and I only noticed some lag every now and then. I also noticed that the game will often render as the players approach oncoming vehicles and buildings.

Overall, Gangstar Rio is another great title from Gameloft. Those guys definitely know what they are doing. I've been impressed with every game they have put out so far and this one is no exception. Although the content was a little too much for me at times, players who don't mind the junk will find it to be an excellent addition to their game collection.
