Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: LITTLE RASCAL

Raccoon Rising is an ascension platformer from Romper Games that has players controlling an agile raccoon through 60 stages.

Romper Games are back, co-ordinating with PixelNauts to release a new title called Raccoon Rising, which is pretty much the polar opposite of their previous title, Doodle Dive. This game has players controlling a ninja raccoon who must rise upward toward the top of each level. He can jump from wall to wall, with the ability to tap and hold to slow down time and charge through objects. He can also dash to the side while in midair.Unlike most ascension platformers, Raccoon Rising is not an endless game; no, this is actually level-based, with 60 short segments over 4 worlds to play.

The game is very good looking, with artwork that’s all in 3D. It really shines on the iPad 2 with a variety of visual effects to go along with the 3D graphics. The level-based structure is a nice twist from other ascension platformers, and the boss battles are particularly interesting, especially the final boss battle which introduces some new platforming elements which I hope future content plays around with.

There are a lot of tight angles to try and jump between; it often leads to challenging jumps that often lead to failure due to the small room for the error. An endless mode would be well-appreciated, as the game is kind of short as it is. There just doesn’t feel like much replay value is to be had from trying to rank up individual levels. Also, there’s some kind of credits that can be collected, but the purpose of which is not quite clear yet. They only exist as a way to get 3 stars. They look like SIM cards…perhaps the story of the game is secretly that the raccoons are trying to start up a new wireless carrier?

Raccoon Rising doesn’t feel like an essential part of the ascension platformer canon; the overall feel of the game and lacking features make it feel like it falls just short of what it needs to be a truly great game in its admittedly crowded genre.

There is nothing like the lighthearted topics of overdevelopment and corporate consumption to make a game a success, right? Greed Corp dips a toe into these complex issues, all under the guise of a turn based strategy game for the masses.  While the subject matter doesn’t exactly smack the gamer over the face, it certainly makes for an interesting medium for discussion.  Fortunately, underneath it all, there is a pretty solid game to back up the preaching.

In this fairly simple resource management title, the only resource that really matters is the ground under the character’s very feet. Each turn actually chips away at their footing, making each move an exercise in careful decision making and effective planning.  Eventually the land will erode, leaving anything standing atop it to tumble to its untimely demise.

The hex based maps are very reminiscent of what might actually be found in a PC game such as Civilization V.  Instead of having to worry about a square grid, this formation style actually opens up navigation immensely, helping to keep action going on at all times.  Using the resources that actually eat away and territory, players must make effective decisions as to what units can make the most impact in the shortest amount of time.

Featuring twenty-four single player levels, there is quite a substantial campaign for players to sink their teeth into.  Along with this, there is online multiplayer, just be patient while waiting for a match to start, because it may take some time.  Also, there are even options for local multiplayer, including the long lost art of the couch-play swapping.  More developers should really do this in the future.

When a game looks this beautiful, there is an impulse to just purchase it immediately, but when there is solid gameplay to back it up, the purchase is all the more appealing.  Greed Corp manages to find a balance between resource management and creative combat that will surely keep audiences coming back for game after game.  As long as players aren’t looking for something that utilizes Game Center, this is most definitely the right place to start.

Kal-El from the planet Krypton, or Superman as we now know him, is available on the small screen and available in the App Store as of today. Based on one of DC Comics’ most prolific superheros of all times, Superman is an action game that pits the Man of Steel against, who else, Lex Luthor. But this time, the story starts out with Mr. Luthor playing a good guy and working to help the city. But we all know how that usually ends.

And we were all right. Soon Luthor’s “good” cops are “protecting” the city and Superman has to do the dirty work and rid the streets of the longtime evildoer. Thus, the hidden agenda was all but hidden from the caped superhero. Longtime fans of the comic series will be happy to know that this Superman seems based on the old school comic style. And new or newer fans will enjoy the modern take on the mobile game.

As for actual gameplay, it’s pretty stellar. I was worried that it would be some over-hyped game leaving me with a lackluster experience, but it came through. In fact, I’d go as far as to say it leapt a tall building. The player maneuvers Superman throughout the boxed in city using his powers such as flight, super-strength, invulnerability, super-speed and heat-emitting vision to take out bad cops, getaway cars, put out building fires, destroy missiles and stop space garbage from littering the streets below, not to mention killing pedestrians.

Scoring is setup much like the norm with points awarded for enemies overcome and levels completed in the fastest time, with stars being awarded (bronze, silver and gold) for overall points. This is carried out through 18 levels with the ultimate goal of saving Metropolis from Luthor and his thugs. The visual appeal is quite enticing and brought me back to old episodes on the television that were set in the old times of Metropolis. And the soundtrack was quite nice too as it was created by the composer of the award-winning game Contre Jour.

For its well developed gameplay, extensive level offerings and superhero abilities, Superman is a iOS game that new and old fans will enjoy. Thus, I’d highly recommend checking it out.

Atari resurrects the classic space-shooter franchise in this freemium release.

True story time: When I was a young lad and the Atari 2600 was the apex of coolness, I incurred my first video game-related injury playing the original Asteroids.

With no school looming the next day, I stayed up late one weekend, blasting space rocks into dust into the wee hours of the night. I was on a tear, playing for a few hours straight without a "game over" screen, but by the time I finally finished, my eyes hurt and I was exhausted. The next day I awoke to find my left thumb nearly immobile and the whole side of that hand swollen and tender to the touch. Doctors confirmed it as sprained muscle caused by the extended, rapid pounding of the joystick's fire button.

So yeah, I like to think I’ve paid my Asteroids dues in spades.

While I haven't revisited the franchise much since my youth, beyond the occasional quarter dumped into an arcade cabinet or few minutes spent sampling retro compilations, I was interested to take a look at Atari's freemium release, Asteroids Gunner, to see what my old friend/nemesis had been up to.

First off, the classic rotate/thrust controls and forward firing arc have both been replaced, turning the affair into a twin-stick shooter. However, the controls are fairly responsive and a lot of the original spirit and feel is still intact as I used the virtual sticks to weave in and out of a rapidly increasing field of space debris.

The biggest change over the original Asteroids is the inclusion of unlockable ships and power-ups to customize them. Crystals are acquired from asteroid remains and can be spent to upgrade ship systems, increase power-up durations and unlock deployable equipment. Sadly, the best of the upgrades are saved for micro-transactions.

Yes, along with two-thirds of the unlockable ships and stages, the best enhancements are only for those who drop real world cash on in-game space bucks. The OmegaTech upgrades can theoretically be purchased with crystals, but the prices are so ridiculously high as to be nigh-pointless. Strangely, the non-Omega cash-only upgrades don't have that as an option. If developers are going to put some content effectively out of reach, at least be consistent about the implementation.

Still, the 50 playable waves available for free will still eat up a fair amount of time. The other two worlds (each presumably containing 50 more waves) can be picked up for less than two bucks, though the prices to unlock the other ships are oddly not listed anywhere. Yet more unfortunately inconsistent implementation.

However, the free end of Asteroids Gunner offers plenty of boulder-blasting enjoyment, especially if one likes the satisfaction of chasing the cost of that next upgrade or besting an old completion time. And all of this without the risk of swollen thumbs; isn’t modern technology great?

Dolphin Browser version 2.0 was released for iOS and is now available for download on the App Store. Similar to the company’s recent Android update, the mobile browser for the iPhone and iPad now features Dolphin Connect, which enables the user to sync all of their important bookmarks across platforms. For instance, iPad owners who have an Android mobile phone are good to go with the latest update. This should make for a consistent user experience regardless of mobile platform.

The app’s Webzine received several enhancements, including bringing 16 of the most popular channels directly to the home screen for easy, one-touch access. The company also announced that they’ve surpassed 10 million users and in celebration are giving away a trip to Disneyland for one lucky Dolphin user. This also includes a guest. The prize is five nights at the Walt Disney Dolphin Hotel in Orlando, Florida. Find out all the details on the company’s blog.

SpellTower Review

Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: FANTASTIC
iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad

SpellTower is a bewitchingly simple word puzzle game that hooks players immediately, never letting go.

SpellTower is one of those word games. The kind of game that turns five minutes into a good hour or more with the player only noticing where time went because the iPad has warned that it’s running low on battery power. Be warned, this genuinely happened on more than one occasion as I played SpellTower.

Like so many great word games, SpellTower is immensely simple to play. Complicated features are rarely needed in quality cerebral games and this is no different. The tutorial promises to take less than a minute to play and it’s right. All the player has to do is find a word somewhere in the 10×15 grid and swipe their finger across it to score points. As long as tiles rest next to each other in some fashion, they are fair game to use to formulate words. Upon completion of the tutorial, four modes gradually unlock as certain, relatively easy goals are completed.

The easiest mode, and best one to start with, is that of Tower Mode. Supplying the player with 150 letters, the game simply asks that the player gains as many points as possible from the selection. It’s a relaxing and appropriate way to start the player off gently. At first, it’s all too easy to fall into the trap of setting up numerous 3 letter words rather than anything more adventurous. It’s not long before I found myself setting up 7 or 8 letter words, gradually feeling my vocabulary increase by the minute.

This is the ideal time to move onto Puzzle Mode in which smart moves are vital for success. Each time the player makes a word, an extra row of letters is added. Once a letter hits the top of the screen, it’s game over. A certain amount of strategy is required in order to keep the rows suitably low and thus remain in the game for longer. Once 2,000 points have been accumulated, Ex Puzzle Mode is then unlocked and things become even harder. For the speed fiend, Rush Mode adds new rows over time but the concept is ultimately the same.

The longer that each of these game modes go on for, the more involving the experience becomes. Blue colored tiles emerge which, once used, can clear an entire row by themselves. Other letters emerge with a number next to them, symbolising how long a word must be to use the letter.

All these little factors make the difference to ensuring that SpellTower is an extremely addictive title. I’ve played many word puzzle games but this is by far one of the best in recent years. Its simplicity is precisely what makes it so beguiling.
