Finger Shoes is like hopscotch for fingers. This simple casual family-friendly action game from Chillingo is oddly satisfying to play and requires a lot more dexterity than it might first appear.
The title has gamers tapping on a series of squares in an effort to land on each of them in a series of 3D courses.
Players guide a boy on his jumping quest, flicking thematically appropriate items like cats from an alley out of his way as he goes.
Successful speedy completion does not yield a perfect three stars as is the custom for these types of games. Rather, players must seek out and tap on three shoes hidden on every course. It's a nice variation on al all too familiar theme.
The game starts off easily, but soon the environments have obstacles that, like real three dimensional structures, obscure the view.
It takes both fast reflexes and good visual recall to complete all but the easiest levels.
This is one of Chilingo’s more inventive games, particularly in a summer full of multiple weekly releases. Yet it seems to have gone virtually unnoticed with not a single review in the US app store.
That's too bad because aside from the easy-to-use controls, and solid gameplay the graphics are both rich and charming. Even the game's soundtrack is one of the very few I didn't turn off right away. It's not exactly melodic, but neither is it annoying and it suits the game perfectly.
Finger Shoes is Game Center and Crystal Network enabled for leader boards and achievements and like in most Chillingo titles successful completion of one level unlocks the next.
The only hiccup I found in testing the game is the controls have a lag. It's not noticeable on the first few levels, but it becomes an obstacle gamers will be frustrated by on the crazier tracks in later worlds. With a slight increase in sensitivity – something easily tweakable – I'd be hooked.
If there is a game equivalent to a beach book, Finger Shoes is it. It's not going to tax the mind, but it does make a terrific light summer diversion for those who love fast-tapping action games.
