At this point in pop culture history if you are not familiar with the pop phenomenon T-Pain, then you have been living under a rock for the last half decade or so. The funny part is that many wouldn’t consider his music stylings anywhere near musical. Heavy utilization of auto tune turned transformed a man from a background vocalist to a headliner. Just imagine what would happen if you had that kind of technology in the palm of your hand.
Streamlining the auto tuning process dramatically, the new app Songify is aiming to turn even your most tone deaf friends into the next pop superstar. To use this kind of technology in the past you had to be familiar with how an auto tune application worked and had to at least be able to trick the device into playing the pitches that you were looking for. In other words, you used to have to possess some form of musical vision to create audio entertainment.
Those days are long in the past now, thanks to Songify, because now all you need are vocal chords and the software does all the rest. For example, check out this random dating personal ad from YouTube that has been ran through the application. The results are both hilarious and astounding.
Wow, apparently not only is this lady lonely, but she REALLY LOVES cats. I never would have seen that coming…
But back to the application at hand. Available for absolutely free, you can go to work turning all of your friend’s audio snippets into a musical work of art. All you need to do is input audio and Songify will do all of the heavy lifting to turn you into an internet superstar like the lovely lady in the video above. Don’t you want to be famous too?
Discovr Apps offers an attractive way of finding new apps, but the app has some limitations.

The app store offers a fantastic resource of all manners of interesting and useful apps and games. It’s not always the easiest of places to browse through, considering the hundreds of thousands of apps out there. While the likes of our fair site ensures that users stay informed on the best apps out there, sometimes it’s nice to just browse around and stumble across hidden gems. Discover Apps seeks to facilitate that and provide a similar service to the Genius feature but with a much more attractive user interface.
Discover Apps is indeed a very pretty app to explore. It’s the kind of app that users will want to show other novice users so that they can see just how easy many Apple features are to navigate. Users simply enter the title of an app then wait to see what similar results Discovr Apps comes up with. For the most part, they’re quite logical connections with the odd blip of something obscure popping up. Connected like a tree diagram, each connection is easy to spot. Larger diagrams can be created by tapping on an icon and then opening up further connections. For further information, the user can then tap the icon to look at app store details and view screenshots.
It’s all very nice to look at and sharing functionality is a useful touch. Discovr Apps is a bit basic, however. It doesn’t pick up on apps already installed so is prone to recommending apps already being used. There’s no way of adjusting it to only provide highly rated apps so sometimes poor apps can be displayed, serving no purpose to anyone. Being able to look specifically for free apps or apps under a certain price would have been convenient. The ability to learn and provide intelligent recommendations the more it’s used would have also been hugely welcome.
As it stands, Discovr Apps is a positively charming way of browsing through the app store and certainly much more appealing than the usual methods. It does however lack those ever useful filtering options. Discovr Apps is all looks and no substance. A fine distraction, but far from feature rich.
Anyone who is a fan of instant messaging on the go from their iOS device of choice is most likely familiar with the SHAPE Services development team and their tool IM+. What their original application did to help revolutionize the way that we chat on the road, their new app Checkin+ hopes to do for the worlds of FourSquare and Facebook.
While I was never one for alerting the entire world of my whereabouts at any given second in time, there has been a budding industry around the social networking concept of “checking in.” The problem was that Foursquare’s existing iOS application has left so much to be desired in the areas of personal mapping. This is where Checkin+ comes into play.
Combining the social networking world with augmented reality applications, though odd when described simply in words, actually makes for an interesting concept. Check out the trailer below and see if you feel the same way!
Gorilla Workout offers a great way of starting to workout but could do with a few more features to be essential.
iPhone Integration Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Having been on a fitness kick in recent weeks, Gorilla Workout sounded like the ideal app for me. I’m fine while cycling or walking for instance but my general strength is distinctly lacking. I’m terrible at lunges and my arm strength means that if I manage one proper push up, I’m doing well. Throw in limited time and even more limited equipment and I’ve got a problem. Gorilla Workout aims to be a fitness app that requires no extra equipment and not even much time. It’s not going to make you fit on its own but it will provide a great starting block.
Using a series of quite cute but informative monkey to gorilla images, Gorilla Workout offers 4 different levels of activity depending on current fitness levels. This means that for example, Day 1 on Level 1 is a relatively basic mix of 4 rounds of 8 squats, 4 lunges and 10 modified push ups. For people like me, the modified push up is a blessing to start users off easily – offering a way of doing a push up supported by one’s knees rather than on toes. The next day offers a slight more challenge and so forth.
For more accomplished and fitter people, level 4 on the first day offers 4 rounds of 20 tuck jumps, 10 split jumps and 20 incline push ups offering more of a workout. Rounds are a little vaguely described but as the app description states, this is meant to be all done quickly. I found myself trying to complete each round as quickly (while staying safe) as possible.
It’s a nice way of doing things ensuring that no one feels intimidated or cheated. Selecting a level enables users to check all exercises available under such a category with a video demonstration of each provided to ensure that the move can be performed correctly. In some cases, admittedly, minor equipment is required such as a push up bar but for the most part; everything can be done without anything extra.
It’s also possible to consult previous workouts to see how progress is going although the lack of a calendar function does impede this slightly. There’s also no way of restarting a workout which can be a pain if disrupted mid way through. Some form of timer function would have been very convenient too as everyone loves to beat past times after all.
Gorilla Workout isn’t a cure all form of exercise. Alone, without a balanced diet and other forms of exercise, the results won’t be great but combined with other tools; it’s a great form of keeping active in a simple, easy to use package.
You must have control!
