At the foundation of Photovine is the idea that people like to share and discuss their photos with one another. Indeed, this truth is what drives much of the activity on social networks like Facebook. Users often post photos to see what their friends will say about them – and they like to comment on their friend’s photos as well.
Simply put, Photovine strives to offer a concentrated photo sharing/commenting experience – not unlike Facebook or any other social network, really – but with its own twist.
The app features a clean interface that’s easy to navigate. Users create their own profile, from which they manage their profile picture and friends list, as well as their uploaded photos. When users upload a photo, they tag it with a caption or “vine,” which functions essentially as a category. Users can browse through vines, viewing other user photos relevant to that caption. For example, there’s a vine devoted to “Blue Steel” – a reference to the 2001 comedy Zoolander – in which users upload their best version of Derrick Zoolander’s winning pose. At the time of publish, other vines on the front page include, “My Wedding Ring,” “How I like My Pizza,” Embarrassing School Portraits,” as well as many others.
The concept is certainly fun. Browsing through the different vines, there’s a lot of user participation in the form of others uploading photos, which is key for this kind of app. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for comments. Thankfully, at the heart of Photovine is the idea of sharing imagery, not necessarily words, so the lack of user discussion isn’t a significant concern.
There are lots of places to share and look at photos – whether it’s Facebook or Flickr – but Photovine offers its own unique twist on the experience. Definitely worth checking this one out.
