Living in the great Northwest, I find myself riding my bike a lot on trails, to the store and around the block. It is a great way to save on gas money and of course is an efficient way to exercise. I normally use Runmeter for all my run, cycle and exercise tracking needs, but wanted to try out Bike CycloComputer HUD for its visual viewing experience. HUD, short for heads-up display is how information is visually presented to the user.
The best feature of the app is that it can run simultaneously with other motion trackers so when one is started it can then be minimized and this app can then be started and viewed for its visual queues. For me, I’m a techie and therefore enjoy tracking, analyzing and recording my exercise sessions. For instance, I’ve run a few marathons and each of them I’ve captured on Runmeter and being able to go back and see the route, pace, time and other information displayed is great. It allows me to relive the moment.
That’s why I’ve really enjoyed using Bike CycloComputer HUD as not only does it let me track, but also lets me see all of the information displayed in a cockpit style HUD right on my iPhone.
The controls are simple to use. After launching the app it automatically displays a compass, elapsed time, distance, analog and digital clock, pace, speed, inclination, average speed, latitude, longitude, altimeter and GPS signal. It’s even better when used with an iPhone bike mount as putting the iPhone in a pocket defeats the purpose and renders the app useless.
The app also integrates the usage of road and satellite maps. This is great for autozooming on the fly to check location or finding a last-minute bike shop for a flat tire. One feature that I wish was available is the ability to map the ride. However, the developer mentioned that this is coming so stay tuned.
During my tests I found the app to be very accurate in pace as it is specifically calibrated for bikes and motorcycles and with its automatic zoom enable map I was always centered on the map, which made it easier to track my position in real-time. The GPS coverage was superb and I never once lost signal and the quick start and stop options made for a great experience using Bike CycloComputer HUD. If a beautiful display of information is what is needed then this app is a must buy.
