Flinging fireballs to kill baby-stealing wizards may sound unique but actually playing Snappy Dragons will feel awfully familiar.

This post-Angry Birds world we live in has certainly been an interesting one to observe. Regardless of its quality, the impact that game has had can not be denied, at least on the App Store. However, for every game like Monkey Bongo that manages to do some fresh, creative things with the Angry Birds formula, they’ll be a game like Snappy Dragons that basically takes that formula and just re-uses it.

Evil wizards have kidnapped and imprisoned baby dragons. The only way to free them is for the mothers to wipe out the wizards with a limited number of fireballs. Depending on the situation, fireballs can also be used to destroy terrain and make wizards fall into the ocean as well as destroy baby dragon cages for extra points. Trying to hit every wizard with only so many fireballs can be quite puzzling and carefully planning the arc of a shot to hit make sure it hits its mark remains compelling. It has just already been done.

Snappy Dragons comes with 80 levels spread across four worlds like a snow world and a lava world. There is a fair amount of content to get through and the difficulty ramps up at a good pace. The occasional bonus levels help break up the pace nicely. Killing as many wizard as possible with unlimited fireballs is particularly fun as is guiding a fireball with one’s finger. If anything, these modes are the game’s most unique features.

Nothing really stands out visually, however. The flat, 2D art style has only the slightest bit of personality. The ambient sound effects are pleasant but the music will be forgotten the instant one quits the game.

Angry Birds is still a fun enough game that Snappy Dragons’ blatant use of its concept, even down to the way certain menu buttons look, doesn’t make it a bad game. It just makes it a redundant one. Most would agree, though, that dragons are at least cooler than birds.
