Flipbooks have always been a fun way of creating some simple animations. As someone who could only ever draw stickmen, admittedly I’ve had a pretty limited time with them but they’re a very cool concept. So the cool people at Netcetera have taken that idea and turned it into an iOS app!

Flickbooks allows its users to turn iOS created videos into their very own flipbooks. A 6 to 15 second video can be recorded with it edited to create the perfect sequence. Covers can be designed also along with a personal message or title.

The completed video can then be sent off via Wi-Fi and turned into an actual, physical Flipbook for a fee that can be paid easily via credit card or Paypal. Each flipbook is a convenient size with 50 pages in all and of a high quality. It’s certainly a lovely romantic gesture and makes for an ideal present for a loved one or relative.

Check out the video example below for the results. It’s pretty clever.

Flickbooks is available now and is a free app.

Neenites Review

Our Rating: ★★★☆☆ :: SIMPLY PUZZLING
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Help the cute little Neenties get to their spaceship, although it’s not as easy as it may first appear.

Gameplay Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.13 out of 5 stars

Neenites? What’s a Neenite? Allow me to enlighten; according to the developers of this little puzzle game, the Neenites are an alien race that are interested solely in exploring the universe. They’re cute little things, purple in color with big googly eyes, funnel-shaped ears and a distinct lack of any other facial features. That said, their adorable nature could soon wear off upon playing. It’s the players job to get them to their rocket ship, and that can get frustrating.

The basic premise is to navigate a Neenite around a series of blocks until he (or she, I guess) reaches the spaceship block. He’ll then be able to fly off the screen in his ship and take on the next level. It reminds me of those labyrinth like puzzle games in kids’ activity books in a way, expect imagine removing most of the lines and having a more of a free reign. It suddenly becomes a whole lot harder to get to the final destination. Controlling the Neenite is far simpler, though. Swiping up, down, left or right will move him in the desired direction — he’ll keep going in the chosen direction until somethings there to stop him. As is the nature of a zero-gravity environment, I assume.

Perhaps it’s my complete lack of any sense of direction that makes this so, but I found some levels very tricky indeed. Bouncing around the same locations over and over in an attempt to get to that spaceship. And the increase in difficulty feels a little off too, I’d often struggle hugely with one level to then beat the next in a matter of seconds, but that could be due to a lucky choice in my first few jumps that made the ‘right way’ become immediately obvious. Either way, there were certainly times that I would have begged for some kind of hint system. Although there is an option to skip levels when getting stuck on a particular puzzle, not that I needed it (alright, I did).

All in all, it’s a fun little game for the more casual player and goes on to introduce some new ideas such as buttons that change the layout of coloured blocks when pressed (making it a little more difficult for people like me). The only real complaint is that the controls take a little while to respond meaning I can’t leap back and forth as quickly as I would have liked to. While it’s probably not for everyone, those into these puzzle games with quick-fire levels will likely find their 99 cents worth in there with ease.

Aurasma Provides Some Futuristic New Augmented Reality Technology

Technology is cool and moving rapidly. We all know that, right? Sometimes though, something will catch the eye that is just mindbloggingly cool. The kind of thing that makes the future seem more like present day. One such technology is that of Autonomy’s Aurasma platform.

It’s an app that can be installed to then allow the iOS device’s camera to see and recognize images in the real world. In doing so it then allows for the possibility of adding a virtual world layer that can then provide anything from a 3D animation to a trailer of a film or game. As the demo below shows, it can enhance a regular paper advert, showing a trailer for a movie or how a piece of furniture could be implemented. It’s impressive stuff and certainly futuristic in nature.

The Aurasma app also offers the ability to create individual channels with users able to make their own virtual worlds for their friends. As well as that, exclusive deals and content can be accessed from participating movie studios and retail stores. Such partners range from Paramount Pictures and Universal to publications such as New Scientist and The Wall Street Journal, as well as shoe retailer Tsubo.

Aurasma is available now for all iOS devices and is a free app. All users need to find is the relevant content!

Paint FX Review

Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: FINGER PAINTED PICS
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

This photo editing app allows users to paint filters on photos any way they want with the swipe of a finger.

Developer: Sprite Labs

Price: $1.99
Version Reviewed: 1.1
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 3GS

iPhone Integration Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Re-use Value Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.33 out of 5 stars

Photo apps are and filters are abundant on the iOS platform, and there are enough of them out there that iOS photographers can take their pick and find the apps that fit their particular tastes and needs. This is great for users, but it makes it difficult for developers to develop new apps that are both interesting and useful. Paint FX offers an interesting way to apply filter effects. Whether this is actually useful depends on the specific image editing needs of the user.

Paint FX allows users to literally paint each filter on to the photo with a finger. Generally, photo editing apps will apply their filters to the whole photo at once. With Paint FX, however, the user can paint only the specific parts of the photo to which they want to apply the currently selected filter. The rest of the photo remains unaffected by the filter. Users can also use layers to either blend different filters or apply one filter to part of the photo and another filter to different part.

There is an option to create masks and apply filters accordingly but this option seems a bit redundant when the “painted on” filters are essentially masked to begin with. If anything, the masking feature does let users paint their selection and apply the mask all at once.

Paint FX combines the masking and selective editing power of some of the more robust photo editing apps and combines it with the quick and easy filter application of simpler popular photo apps. This app is prefect for the user who is looking for a bit more control over how filters are applied to their images but who don’t want to mess around with complex apps with confusion options and menus.

The filter choices are fairly limited, and the available filters are a bit heavy handed though their intensity can be adjusted. There are also some filters that place frames around the photo which can cover up the outer edges of the image and end up looking very strange if only part of the frame is painted in completely.

Paint FX offers an easy way to gain some added control over filter application, but the filters themselves are limited. The images are output at a decent size as well which is always a plus for photo apps. The app is certainly useable, but whether it is useful or not will depend on every user’s specific needs.
