I’ve recently found myself addicted to playing online Texas Hold ‘Em. I’ve always played the occasional game of poker with friends over the years, but until a couple of days ago – after a recent trip to Las Vegas – I never tried playing online. It didn’t take more than a couple of games to feel hooked, though. Considering my recent discovery of the absorbing world of online Texas Hold ‘Em, I was excited to review Zynga Poker.

Zynga Poker is an iOS version of the popular online flash game by the same title. The app is fully integrated with Zynga’s Facebook version, allowing gamers to easily play with their Facebook friends on their iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Of course, players can choose to experience Zynga Poker as a guest, without logging into their Facebook profile, but the experience is greatly enhanced by logging in.

From the menu, players have a couple of options to choose from. There’s a “Play Now” mode that quickly finds and enters gamers into a game of Texas Hold ‘Em with other players. Or if gamers prefer, they can use the “Hold ‘Em Tables” mode to do a customized search for a specific table. Gamers can choose the stakes of the game, min/max buy-in, table size, game speed and more. From there, the app finds a game with those specifications. Lastly, there’s “Sit-n-Go,” which places gamers in a tournament-style series of games.

Zynga Poker is fast, and it sports a clean, intuitive interface. The best part of the app, though, is really its Facebook integration. Thanks to it, gamers can easily play with their Facebook friends from whatever iOS device they choose. Players will likely enjoy being able to keep tabs on how well their friends are doing, as well as being able to chat with them during games. But outside of the Facebook integration, this is still a more than solid app. It has a wide variety of useful options, including a feature that vibrates the device when it's the player’s turn (very useful if one’s not paying complete attention to the table). There’s also a Hands Rank page, which is useful for new players. And, lastly, the app even keeps track of player’s all-time best hand, which is kind of cool for bragging rights.

All around, Zynga Poker is an excellent download for anyone looking to play some online Texas Hold ‘Em on the go. In fact, I much prefer playing Zynga Poker on my iPhone or iPad over using the Facebook version. The interface is much cleaner, and the experience that much better. Highly recommended.

We all know that recycling is great for the planet but how often do we actually remember to recycle? I know I’m pretty terrible for it especially when in the midst of a busy week. So how about a way of being rewarded for doing so? There’s a new app on the horizon that promises to do exactly that.

It’s called RecyclePix and it allows users to snap and share their photos of their recycling actions at any time and anywhere. Once taken, such photos can then be used to earn Greenopolis Rewards Points which can then be redeemed for real rewards such as discounts at places like Domino’s Pizza and exclusive deals with Marriott Hotels. More offers are planned such as discount cinema tickets once the app is launched next week.

It looks like a pretty neat idea, offering a genuine reason to recycle as well as being a fun and social way of saving the planet. There’s even a form of community set with users able to vote on photos submitted by others thus gaining extra points.

RecyclePix is set to be released August 4th. It’ll be interesting to see how it takes off. I for one will certainly be checking it out.

I am a sucker for catchy tunes, cheerful graphics, and plump, fancy, gentlemanly blobs in snazzy top hats. Mr. Filby, from independent mobile game developer Scylla Games’ newest creation BlibBlob, is such a gentleblob.

After a freak accident that left all the royal stars blown across Blobtopia, Mr. Filby pledges his loyalty to the king and sets forth to return all the stars. The player guides Mr. Filby through 15 levels of increasing difficulty gathering stars, seeking out hidden hearts in secret areas, and munching up fruit all while avoiding the fierce creatures and obstacles that litter the course. In order to proceed to the next level, the player must guide Mr. Filby through treturous terrain to find all the stars. While looking for stars, Mr. Filby can eat fruit to gain bonus points and look for hidden hearts to refill his life status. Any extra hearts found by the the end of the level add to overall points. The stars are readily visible but not necessarily easy to get to, and the same goes for the fruit.

The fierce creatures that are placed throughout the levels can pose some fine challenges. There are some stars and secret places that can only be reached by riding on top or bouncing off of the creatures. Getting the timing right so as to not lose a heart in Mr. Filby’s life status can be tricky, especially once past the first few levels. Blibblob is a delightful game that, while targeted at children, has some fun deeper challenges for more experienced gamers.

Game options allow the music to be adjusted, as well as the way Mr. Filby is controlled. Mr. Filby can be controlled by button or tilt. I personally felt I had better control of Mr. Filby with the button function then the tilt. I found myself aggressively tilting the iPhone and grumbling under my breath trying to get the correct timing needed to get Mr. Filby into some of the tighter spots, especially those secret passageways. I’m not sure if it is my chimplike aggression while gaming that prevented me from making those subtle moves in the tilt function or if Mr. Filby really is controlled better by the buttons.

Fully integrated with OpenFeint, BlibBlob has letterboards and achievements to keep more experienced players entertained. Without an OpenFeint account, once the game is beaten there is not much except beating previous scores – this will draw most back. However, 15 levels is enough to get anyone through a long road trip, several morning commutes, or that awful half-hour of movie trivia and “insightful” and “cutting edge” cable TV show previews before the real movie previews start.

BlibBlob is a childlike game that is complex enough for adults to enjoy. The controls are easy to pick up, the storyline is cute, and while the repaly value is not the best – unless the player is on OpenFeint – who cares when there are stars to gather, secret passageways to discover and fruity bonus points to eat.

Sid Meier’s Pirates! HD is a fine restoration of a true classic. It does lack the helpful tutorials and welcoming steps that newer titles offer, however.

Allow me to reminisce for a moment. Once upon a time when I was far too young to be interested in simulation games, I discovered the existence of a Commodore 64 game by the name of Sid Meier’s Pirates! Yes the exclamation mark was part of the title. It sounded amazing. Being able to play as a pirate and have a whole wealth of decisions open to you was revolutionary at the time. Over 20 years after its release, is it still as revolutionary? Not quite in terms of open world games but I’ve yet to find any other pirate based game that’s quite so wondrous. Fortunately for iPad owners, this is a great conversion.

For the uninitiated, Pirates! HD focuses on the tale of a young boy who escapes enslavement alongside his family and once an adult decides to become a pirate. Players are offered a choice of routes to take then, immediately opening up to a more individual experience. It can be a little intimidating. There’s a lot to take in at first with even an in-depth onboard manual providing little comfort. Basically knowledge comes through experience, just like any game of that era previously. There’s still the choice of following through the story based quests but ultimately players can do whatever they choose to. If they want to trade with other pirates, collect bounties, commit piracy or simply explore – all are viable options.

It’s not just all sailing based either with sword fighting available too and the mini game for this as well as boat based combat is satisfying and breaking up the gameplay of simply wandering around. In each case, the addition of touch based controls adds to the experience more than anything else.

Pirates! HD is a complex sim and one that demonstrates just how wondrous it was the first time. It’s aged so well purely because of its depth. Any game that requires its players to keep an eye on food consumption for its crewmates is bound to be detailed. On the iPad, it’s a refreshing change but also one that’s going to intimidate a few people expecting a more casual affair as is assumed with many iOS games. Give it time and the beauty becomes apparant. For those in need of a true sim however or a dose of nostalgia, this is a must buy.

Today, Google Maps added public transport directions for London within Google Maps, including Google Maps for mobile on iOS, Blackberry, and Android-powered devices. Now, whether you live in London or are just visiting, you can get public transport directions on your mobile device.


Public transport directions in Google Maps for Android

Google Maps for mobile uses your current location to determine the best trip to your destination. Just search for your destination location, select it on the map and choose the "Directions" option. The suggested trips will be based on your location by default, and provide you multiple alternatives whenever possible.

If you're using an Android-powered device, you can also get public transport directions with Transit Navigation (Beta) in Google Maps. With this feature, you'll get alerts when it's time to get off the bus or train at your destination or to make a transfer. We hope that public transport directions in London make getting around town more convenient!
