Google Covers Even More Ground With Google Catalogs

Is there anything that Google doesn’t do? It appears not. It’s even come along and revitalized the catalog market now with the iPad app Google Catalogs.

I remember the golden days of catalogs (or catalogues as people on my side of the Atlantic call them), when people would have huge booklets of pretty photos and information about various products, all so that they could browse stores from the comfort of their sofa. This app does pretty much that while saving effort, paper and space by allowing users to browse from their ever-stylish iPad devices.

The app offers a variety of different catalogs, much like the web based version of Google Catalogs that was was discontinued in 2009. Numerous top brands are on offer, such as Antrhopologie, Bare Escentuals, Bergdorf, Goodman, Crate and Barrel, L.L. Bean, Lands’ End, Macy’s, Neirman Marcus, Nordstrom, Pottery Barn, Saks Fifth Avenue, Sephora, Sundance, Tea Collection, Urban Outfitters and Williams-Sonoma, as well as others that I’m far too uncool/British to know about. It comes to over 100 in all.

The app is simple to use with the ability to zoom in to see products up close, find products in nearby stores and view photo albums and videos. Viewing items according to price is simple enough also. Users can then create their own collages of favorite collections of products and they can get instant access to new catalogs through the app as soon as they become available. Purchasing is similarly easy with a single tap taking users to a merchant’s website or information about the nearest store.

Most intriguing of all is that this app has come to the iPad before Android devices. While we’re not ones to encourage rivalry between the formats, it is a curious development. Presuambly an Android version will follow in the future.

Either way, Google Catalogs is out now for the iPad and it’s a free app.

DJ Hero Style Gameplay From Skillz: The DJ Game

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. It’s unfortunate that we’ll almost never see DJ Hero on the iPad. It was an ideal game for such a device but as it sold rather poorly for the various consoles, it’s probably never going to happen. Still, this is an ideal time for a game such as Playpen Studios’ Skillz: The DJ Game.

Looking distinctly like an iPad equivalent of DJ Hero, Skillz offers a career mode as well as full mixing using crossfades, scratching and samples. The touch screen interface ensures that it’s simple to get to grips with and a series of achievements and unlockable venues and playable characters keeps the game fresh. Tracks recently revealed for launch include:

• Kid Cudi Vs. Crookers – “Day ‘N’ Nite” Vs. Hoxton Whores – "Friday Saturday Love"
• Mr Scruff – "Test The Sound"
• Roots Manuva – "Witness (1 Hope)"
• Roots Manuva – "Buff Nuff"
• Guilty Simpson & Oh No – “Futuristic” feat. MED
• Poirier – “Wha-La-La-Leng” feat. Face T
• Nu Tone – “Never Together” feat. Logistics
• "Stones Throw Megamix 1" featuring tracks from artists including Dam Funk, James Pants, and Oh No
• "Stones Throw Megamix 2" featuring tracks from artists including Maker, Lazer Sword and Cx kidtronic
• "Om Megamix" featuring tracks from artists including King Kooba, Andy Caldwall and Chuck Love
• "Ninja Tune Megamix" featuring tracks from artists including Blockhead, Ty, Mr Scruff and Roots Manuva

There’ll be 25 tracks in all.

Check out the gameplay video below. Skillz: The DJ Game is out soon and we’ll be sure to cover it.

Light and dark. Yin and Yang. Black and white. The two elements/colors have been balancing each other out pretty much since the whole of existence started, well, existing, I guess. In a similar fashion, the concept of switching between worlds/modes/polarities – one light, one dark – has been used in games throughout much of their history to varying degrees of success. Croma makes fairly good use of the idea, but it could use a little polish.

The world of Croma, or at least the portion that’s viewed through the screen of an iOS device, is fraught with peril. Specifically lots of black and white circular perils of various sizes. They float down from the top of the screen and players have to use their little bubble-thing to blast them away. Unfortunately, black can only be touched by black and white by white, so they’ll also have to switch between the two colors constantly.

There are a lot of little (and deceptively hidden) touches that make Croma a bit more complex than it first appears. Different falling orbs behave differently, ranging from simply being heavier (thus, harder to shoot off-course) to bursting open to reveal numerous smaller offspring and more. Another nice touch is the use of a few different power-ups that give the gun-thing a temporary boost by way of a multi-shot, laser and so on. It’s important to show restraint when grabbing them though, as the power-ups become tied to whatever color they’re acquired with.

My one complaint about Croma is a simple one that has a rather profound effect on the game: no multi-touch. Swapping from black to white works okay when things are slow, but once the screen starts to fill up it can be problematic, and even detrimental, to remove that essential blasting finger to initiate the change. I know it sounds like a pointless little nitpick, but it honestly drags the whole experience down for me. Which is a shame because it’s a pretty fun game when it’s not beating me in the head repeatedly with this one issue.

Even so, the core experience of Croma is surprisingly well put together. As a pick-up-and-play arcade shooter, it’s a great and affordable way to kill time. I just hope that multi-touch support is added later through an update so I can keep playing it and actually get farther than a mere 108 seconds.

Until August 22, the entire series of Real Racing games are on special offer with some impressive discounts available for budding racers.

We at 148apps have been big fans of the series, especially the iPhone versions of Real Racing 1 and 2. With the iPad versions also doing well so now is surely the ideal time to give them a shot.

Prices start at $0.99 for Real Racing iPhone edition, Real Racing HD for $3.99, Real Racing 2 at $2.99 and Real Racing 2 HD priced at $4.99.

Each title offers some excellent simulation based racing and are all equally worth players’ attentions. It’s particularly fun to see just how far iOS gaming has come just in the time that Firemint has been developing the Real Racing series. Real Racing 2 HD is particularly revolutionary with the likes of TV-out functionality and cloud based saving synchronization.

This Week at 148Apps: August 15-19

This week at 148Apps.com, Jeff Scott took a look at the new Dexim iBlueK iPad2 Keyboard Folio Case, saying, “I must admit that I was a little disappointed overall by the iBlueK. Partially because of the 6+ month wait. While it's a competent keyboard and a good case, it now just feels behind. The 6 months in production, after announcing it at CES, now makes it feel a bit dated. While it was innovative in January, it just feels bulky and a generation behind. Other manufacturers, led by Apple and the Smart Cover, have gone for more sleek and thin cases.”

Meanwhile, at sister site GiggleApps, Amy Solomon reviewed part game-turned iPhone app Spot It: Dobble. Amy writes, “This app has made me very curious about the related party game, something I will be on the lookout for when my son shows interest and aptitude for this application. Like books, I find value in both the classic presentation of a game like this as well as its application counterpart. Although far into the future, I see myself buying this card game as a standard gift in grade school if my son allows this. I highly recommend this app!”

Android Rundown featured an article this week on Talkbox Voice Messenger, an app that allows sharing of small voice recordings between Android and iOS users. Writer Carter Dotson says, “By holding down on the push to talk button, the user's voice is recorded and then immediately sent to the other user in the conversation. They can then send messages back, and users can listen to the messages. The app can either play back through the loudspeaker or phone speaker by holding the phone up to the ear. Users can send more than just their voices to their friends and other TalkBox users, as they can also geotag their messages and include pictures. It's kind of like the best walkie-talkie ever.”

Finally, 148Apps.biz writer Rob LeFebvre shared a quick overview of AppBlade, a new service for devs wishing to test their apps. Rob writes, “Typically, companies trying to deploy applications, for the iPhone especially, have to use a number of complex steps to move developed applications from the developer to testers or other enterprise users. The process can be confusing and involves many steps. AppBlade hopes to help manage this complexity from one simple, easy to use centralized location.”
