When it comes to critiquing a game, though, it’s important to take into consideration the context of its development. Ninja Tap is one such game where if it weren’t for the story of its development, it would be something I probably wouldn’t glance twice at. However, because it’s the debut title from a one-man studio, I was a little more intrigued than usual.
Players are challenged to tap the screen to take out ninjas that pop up – each of which will earn players five points – and score as many points before the clock hits zero. However, they have to be careful with their reflexes, as tapping any other townsfolk that appear on screen, such as geisha or old men, will result in a loss of health points. If players lose too many health points, it’s game over. The ultimate goal of the game is to beat the previous high score. The gameplay is fast-paced and fun for the most part.
Considering it was designed by one guy, Ninja Tap has high production values, which is something you have to respect. Graphically, it looks nice and the sound effects are well-done. Kudos to that, for sure.
But beyond its ultra simplistic highscore, tap-based gameplay and high production values, there’s unfortunately not a lot to Ninja Tap. It’s one of those games that’s not necessarily bad – but it’s just not going the extra mile it could have, either.
There’s evidence of good game design here, so I at least look forward to the studio’s next project. Hopefully, it’s a little more developed than Ninja Tap.

Scientists may have long believed that the center of the Earth is a core of super-heated molten rock, but have they ever considered that there may be a race of squat green caretakers down there living in a zero-gravity environment and constantly stoking the furnaces that power our planet? Probably not. However improbable, this giant stretch of the imagination is the premise of the iOS game Roping Rob.
The game’s mechanics are fairly simple, but the physics are very tricky. The player touches anywhere on the screen and the Rob’s grappling hook shoots out from his backpack attaching to any surface. Once attached, the hook pulls the Rob up and the Rob will swing back and forth. By touching again the player can detach the hook and send the Rob flying in an arc based on the trajectory of his swing. It feels very much like a cross between two different traversal games like

Sometimes it’s the simplest things that are the coolest. That’s exactly what the new Facebook based app Profiles is trying to be.

Star Legends: The Blackstar Chronicles is a mobile MMORPG from Spacetime Studios that may be technically the game that has had the longest development cycle in mobile gaming. Though the game was originally meant for traditional computer platforms, it got stuck in development hell and was only recently unearthed after the launch of last year’s 
This is a free to play game; while not spending money is certainly an option, Star Legends is not afraid to give advantages to those who do spend money. By spending money, players can easily earn additional experience, boost their stats, and even get better items at the very beginning. This may put some people off right away, though nothing is necessary. Combat can be very finnicky at times, especially targeting special abilities. If the enemy targeted when an ability is used suddenly dies, the next enemy isn’t targeted, leading much ability usage to go to waste. While mashing the attack button to lock on works as well, it just doesn’t feel as clean. It is possible at times for enemies to overwhelm players to the point where it is impossible to respawn without enemies instantly killing the player. This is supremely annoying, to say the least. The game seems to have limited amounts of gameplay past level 25, though it is likely that Spacetime Studios will add more in the way of content as time goes on, especially as they supported Pocket Legends long after release.
