Radballs Review

Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: RADICAL
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Radballs is a rhythm based matching game that takes design cues from the great decade of the 80′s.

If there is one thing that iOS players clamor for more than anything, it’s more games in the App Store that embrace the timeless, in-your-face neon aesthetics of the 80s. Alright, this might not be an entirely accurate statement, but once players lay their eyes on Radballs – its design style wouldn’t look out of place on a Trapper Keeper – they will have to admit that this is something that they don’t see often in the App Store.

Radballs is a rhythm-based matching game in which players match colorful balls, called Radballs surprisingly enough, into groups of at least four to create blocks. These blocks are then cleared from the screen by a passing bar that moves to the beat of different 80′s-esque tunes. Players can also grab the bar and scratch it over the blocks to build up bonus points. This also “scratches” the music, adding to the games specific atmosphere. When blocks are cleared the player receives (what else) Radness energy that fills up a meter. Each level is completed when the meter is filled and the player moves on to the next level.

There are several different types of power-ups such as bombs, lighting, and ice blocks that randomly drop to help the player clear each level. These power-ups are activated by touching and holding them, and the powers are controlled by unique touch gestures.

Radballs is a fairly simple matching puzzle game with some interesting rhythm elements added. What really sets it apart from other matching games is the music and art style, both of which beautifully evoke the 80′s without being too campy or overly derivative. The music is so phenomenal that players may want to start a game and just let it run so they can listen. The bright, colorful art changes periodically during the game but stays faithful to the game’s theme showing different design aesthetics popular in the 80s.

Radballs is a fun game, but it is best approached as more of a full sensory experience rather than a mindless time sink. The gameplay may not be revolutionary but the complete experience won’t leave players disappointed.

4Towers Onslaught Review

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: BRIGHT AND SHINY
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

This neon glowing tower defense game has a retro feel but includes some interesting combo options that vary the gameplay.

4Towers Onslaught, like its predecessor 4Towers Combo, is a tower defense game where players place four basic tower types in different combinations in order to destroy waves of incoming enemies. 4Towers Onslaught also includes persistent power-ups that can be purchased with in-game currency called biomatter that is awarded at the completion of each level. These power-ups can be used to increase the strength, range, rate of fire, and other tower abilities. They range in price from cheap to very expensive so extended play is required to take full advantage of these power-ups.

As it was with the first 4Towers game, 4Towers Onslaught focuses on building intelligent combinations. The individual tower types are the standard tower defense types players will have seen in many other tower defense games, but when two towers are placed in special double placements they will compliment each other and create a new, more powerful tower type with its own unique abilities and effects. Even the purchased power-ups can be used in different combinations and changed from level to level to give the player a boost exactly where they need it. Using different tower combinations is essential in progressing from level to level. Different enemy types are susceptible to different types of towers and the player must take that into account as they are building their defenses and making the tower combos.

Aside from building combos, the game plays out like most other tower defense games. Enemies progress in waves and each level ends with an enemy boss that is larger and more difficult to defeat. Currency is awarded for each enemy creep that is killed and that money can be used to build new towers.

The neon art style of 4Towers is not new to the tower defense genre but it is successfully executed. The gameplay is smooth and the abstract-yet-organic design of the enemies is very cool. There are subtle design cues built into the game that make it easy to identify the different tower and enemy types and the interface works smoothly without many hitches in the heat of battle. It is easy to read the situation and react to it accordingly making the game fun to play and saving the player from confusion and frustration. There are lots of tower defense games out there and not all of them are great. 4Towers Onslaught is certainly one of the more enjoyable tower defense titles out there and it merits a looks from players looking for a new game in the genre to enjoy.

Celebrate Sonic’s 20th Anniversary With a New Free Sonic Game and App

Sega has spent the past year celebrating Sonic’s 20th Anniversary, releasing new Sonic titles that pay homage to the original games and re-releasing many of the original Sonic titles. Now, Sega has released an app to help iOS users get in on the extended celebration.

The star of the Sonic 20th Anniversary app is the brand new game, Sonic the Sketchhog. This is an endless runner game, where players control Sonic trying to collect rings and hop on top of Dr. Robotnik’s assorted minions. When players don’t hit an enemy, they lose their rings, and if they’re hit without any rings, then it’s game over, just like traditional Sonic games. As can be inferred from the title, all the graphics in the game are rough sketches rather than anything hyper-detailed, though Game Center support for high scores is present. Don’t be surprised if this lays the groundwork for a future full-featured Sonic endless runner game, if only because the idea makes so much sense.

The other big part of the app is a Lite version of Sonic 4: Episode 1, though this puts the “light” in “Lite” as players can play the first level of the game for sixty seconds. That’s it. As well, the app comes with some wallpapers, including some that are only available for a limited amount of time. Currently, there’s a Sonic Unleashed wallpaper available through September 9th, for those that just happened to actually love that game. As well, there’s links to other Sonic and Sega games on the App Store, news about upcoming titles both the consoles and iOS (including the upcoming version of Sonic CD which will not be actually available on compact disc), and links to see the latest Sonic-related tweets.

Not a bad way to celebrate a 20th anniversary, especially with a new free game. Of course, the real fun will come when Sonic’s 21st Annversary arrives. Just remember, don’t drink and spin dash.

Dolphin Browser Review

By
on September 8th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: BROWSE BY DOODLE
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Dolphin Browser is a pretty useful web browser with an added feature: the ability to navigate by drawing.

Developer: MoboTap Inc
Price: Free
Version: 1.0.1
App Reviewed on: iPhone 3GS
iPhone Integration Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 4.75 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Dolphin Browser may seem like “just another” web browser for the iPhone, but it comes with an interesting hook. Users can program drawn gestures for bookmarks and actions, allowing them to jump from favorite site to favorite site and more. In some cases it seems a bit unnecessary, but it definitely has its uses. It doesn’t hurt that it’s also a pretty comprehensive web browser on its own.

Now, I’ll admit I’ve been using the default browser on my phone since I’ve had it, so I haven’t messed around with many others, but Dolphin Browser does offer a bit more. It’s got tabs, a bookmarks menu that slides in from the left side of the screen, a window to display downloads and more. Then there’s the drawing thing. A number of doodles come pre-programmed that let users refresh, go back and forward, scroll up and down and so on by drawing simple shapes.

I’m a big fan of the increased number of options found in Dolphin Browser compared to the default. The tabs are nice, but I doubt they’re all that new. The menus that can be dragged in from the sides, however, are very convenient. Similarly, being able to assign a bookmark to a doodle makes navigation a snap. Plus it’s kind of fun to come up with single-stroke drawings for different addresses and tasks.

Conversely, a good many of the tasks the gesture-drawing is supposed to make easier just aren’t. Having to tap the gesture button in order to draw a Back arrow and go back takes more time and effort than simply tapping on the Back button. I can also imagine things getting a bit convoluted as more and more symbols are added to the library.

For a web browser with a “gimmick,” Dolphin Browser is all kinds of alright. The app itself is just as functional (even more so, actually) as the iPhone’s default, and the gesture drawing is surprisingly accurate. Some of the doodling seems utterly pointless, but it certainly makes for an interesting new way to peruse the internet.
