It’s pretty much inevitable that technology is moving towards the cloud. How it gets there however is still anyone’s guess. Services like Apple’s upcoming iCloud have users rent out third-party servers to share their content. The latest update to Wyse Technology’s PocketCloud app, version 2.2, takes a different approach: instead of buying someone else’s space users just create their own.

Free for the first month and $1 a month afterwards, the new PocketCloud allows users to turn existing storage on their hard drives, computers, tablets and smartphones into personal cloud space. This frees users from third-party control and privacy issues. A professional version is also available For $14.99 a month that includes enhanced security features and support for additional computer connections.

PocketCloud has already been downloaded over 1.5 million times since debuting on the App Store and Android Market back in December. This update still contains the virtual desktop features that sold people on the app in the first place as well as new in app purchases and support for iPad 2 video mirroring among other new features. However, the biggest thing about this latest update is that what began as a mere virtual desktop has become a potentially viable alternative to big cloud storage providers.

Tesla Wars HD Review

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: FUN WITH ELECTRICITY
iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad

Tesla Wars will challenge players by requiring quick reflexes and even tougher decisions. One wrong move can mean disaster.

No matter if it is for having fun in science class or making music from popular pop-culture references, Tesla coils rock. It is this iconic device that now finds its way into a castle defense style game by the name of Tesla Wars. While this virtual static electricity device may not make the hair stand on the back of the neck, it is going to make those fingers work extremely hard.

This is a game of speed and tough decisions. The premise is simple: a Tesla coil sits in the middle of the screen with a fence connecting it to the top and bottom. Players will need to guard this structure from hordes of stick figures that run in from either side of the screen. If the fence reaches zero health, the army has won, and it is back to the drawing board for another retry. Of course the stick people are resourceful and will only get more ingenious with their weapons, like bringing in exploding oil barrels or launching rockets at the fence. The player gets some aids as well, like being able to call in an airstrike or increase the power of the electrical beam that is emitted. This game quickly becomes an exercise in fast reflexes and deciding if upgrading health or buying that new airstrike power is most important.

This is a simple looking, and sounding, game. The fence and tower never deviate from what is presented at the beginning of the game. Players will see the same stage settings, like an arid dessert, for ten levels before it changes to something new. The stick people explode with little bits flying across the screen and explosions leave craters for a short duration. The sound is where things really come together. Electrical beams are crackly and scratchy while explosions are loud and thuddy. Even the chainsaws against the fences are enjoyable, albeit unnerving, to hear. The audio and visuals work extremely well for this setting.

It is unfortunate that the controls can get so irritating and that they can lead to lost games. Hitting slow moving people is easy, but when a horde rushes in and then the game fails to recognize that the player’s finger is on an enemy only adds an unnecessary difficulty to the game. When this happens, valuable seconds are lost as the player has to pick up their finger and reposition it so the game recognizes what is going on. While it doesn’t happen often, it occurs enough to become annoying during this higher stages.

This is still an enjoyable game, regardless of the less than perfect controls. I had a hard time putting the game down long enough to write this, and I plan to go back and blast more stick people to bits when I am done here. Watch out for those in-app purchases and enjoy this free game, and it is also available on the iPhone!

3D Without Glasses For The iPad Thanks To CineXPlayer

3D screens have come a heck of a long way in recent years. Once seen as a gimmicky technology that never quite achieved the desired affect, they’re now taking over the technological world. 3D screens at the cinema work great with the current biggest film at the box office being a 3D version of classic Disney flick, The Lion King. 3D TVs are spreading throughout people’s living rooms and even the handheld world benefits from the Nintendo 3DS and its glasses-less 3D capabilities. Now the potential of 3D reaches iOS devices courtesy of the CineXPlayer.

The potential is pretty impressive with users being able to watch 3D movies on their iPad with or without 3D glasses. The CineXPlayer software supports viewing with regular standard glasses, otherwise known as anaglyph (red/blue) glasses. These work by providing different images to the left and right eye through different colored filters. Another option is thanks to a partnership with GRilli3D. Users can also watch without glasses thanks to the GRilli3D protective filter on the screen that provides the glasses-free experience by placing a series of ‘barrier lines’ across the display, thus blocking different parts of the image to each eye. This 3D filter sheet is available for about $30.

Even more exciting is the potential for converting 2D imagery to 3D courtesy of CineXPlayer‘s real-time conversion capabilities which can generate a 3D effect for any Xvid video file. CineXPlayer‘s 3D capabilities also work with 3D content from 3D cameras providing a well rounded experience for those users keen to embrace all things 3D.

To further enhance such technological innovations, come October 28th, CineXPlayer will be updated with AC3 (Dolby Mobile) support making it the first app with official Dolby support. Impressive stuff, indeed, and a mere glimpse of what the future could hold for handheld technology.

CineXPlayer is available now for $2.99 with an in-app purchase for $1.99 to enable 3D support.

Where’s My Water Review

Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: DIG IT
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Where’s My Water is an incredibly fun and fresh take on the water physics puzzle genre.

Developer: Disney
Price: $0.99
Version: 1.0.2
App Reviewed on: iPhone 3GS
Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Life’s not easy for a sewer-bound alligator. Well, I suppose it’s fine enough for the normal ones anyway, but for a clean-freak like Swampy? Yeah, not so much. All the poor guy wants to do is keep clean and take nice shower every now and then. The other gators aren’t so keen on letting him have his way, so they sabotage the water pipes in order to block his water supply. That’s where we come in.

Fluid physics puzzle games have become surprisingly popular as of late, but as far as I know none of them have approached the idea from the same direction as Where’s My Water. Instead of controlling a fire hose or using gadgets to redirect an oil flow, players use gravity, angles and momentum to guide each level’s cache of clean water into (and hazardous liquids away from) Swampy’s tub. And it’s as simple as dragging a finger across a patch of dirt to dig.

As with the best puzzle games, Where’s My Water incorporates a fairly simple mechanic that’s a cinch to learn but difficult to master as the levels get tougher. It won’t be long before players have to carefully plan their actions throughout multiple steps in a single stage: separating the water in order to activate a switch one moment, redirecting a pool of toxic purple stuff the next, then quickly digging a new route for the clean water before it flows off-screen. And that’s all before the corrosive green goo and mines (to name a couple more obstacles) start to show up.

I’m hard-pressed to come up with any serious grievances here. I suppose the water doesn’t act exactly like I expect it to 100% of the time, and having some form of indication as to which levels contain hidden collectibles on the level-select screen would be nice, but that’s all I can really come up with. Where’s My Water is a great puzzle game, pure and simple. It’s very well put-together, has plenty of replay value as every stage has 3 ducks that can be grabbed (much harder than it sounds later on), some contain those hidden collectibles I mentioned that will unlock bonus levels (and more ducks), and even more levels are planned for the future.

Where’s My Water has been in the spotlight on the App Store for a good reason. It’s possibly one of the best iOS puzzle games in recent memory, and it’s available at a price that’s downright foolish to pass up. I strongly suggest getting a smaller cup of coffee tomorrow morning and buying this instead. I doubt there will be any regrets.

Cloud-Word Streamlines Outlining

With numerous tools out there for optimizing productivity, it is about time that a developer decided to design an app that is open-ended enough that it can be used for multiple purposes.  The new software Cloud-Word is the kind of outlining application that is easy enough to be accessible to everyone, while still providing enough complexity to be a productivity Swiss Army Knife.

Want to take notes?  Cloud-Word has your back.  Do you need to brainstorm easily and on the fly?  Once again, Cloud-Word has your back.  And this isn’t even beginning to touch on the audio recording and text playback options…

Without question, this currently free app should be an indispensable part of any active businessperson’s arsenal. Be sure to give it a download before the developer wises up and decides to actually charge for it.  It is only a matter of time before they see the error of their ways.
