NBA 2K12 Review

NBA 2K12 Review

By
on October 19th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★☆☆☆ :: MASSIVE AIR BALL
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

This once again proves that without competition, genres stagnate.

Developer: 2K Sports
Price: $4.99
Version: 1.0.2
App Reviewed on: iPhone 4, iPad 2

Graphics / Sound Rating: 2 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 1.5 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

Basketball games have had a fairly checkered history on the iOS.  With the notable exception of the stellar NBA Jam, very few games have managed to live up to the expectations of the gaming masses.  2K Sports look to put these issues in the past with their newest portable hardwood companion, NBA 2K12.  Luckily for them, when the bar is low enough to trip over, a game should have no problem standing tall – right?

When there is no competition from other publishers, it is hard for a developer to find the motivation to go above and beyond when it comes to game design.  NBA 2K12 is the personification of this statement to the nth degree.  The gameplay is just what you would expect from a basketball game on iOS.  Utilizing a virtual joypad and on-screen buttons, the game runs fluidly, albeit with lag when the action gets hot and heavy.  As the intensity picks up, these performance hitches continue to express themselves, further hampering the experience.  Does it work as a functional basketball simulation?  Yes, but it lacks the smooth performance that the sport emphasizes.

Visually, the game also isn’t going to turn any heads.  While it does work as a reasonable facsimile for the sport, it lacks the detail to be able to distinguish players from a distance.  Further compounding matters, the framerate dips into the single digits in order to animate dunks, signature dribbles, or fancy moves with any sense of grace.  It is almost as if the game were built to utilize hardware that doesn’t exist in the iPhone 4, or even the iPad 2, which I used to check my first impressions – the same issues are prevalent, even on the newer, faster device.

Even more disturbing is the frequent visual glitches that plague the game.  It is not out of the question to come out of a time-out only to find the audience completely missing, players lacking faces, or even having the entire basketball court completely missing.  The title reeks of being rushed to market without the proper opportunity to completely Q/A the end product.

If looked at from a distance NBA 2K12 seems like a competent vehicle for playing basketball on the go.  Sadly, upon closer inspection, the luster of an incomplete development cycle and poor overall execution of the sport’s fundamental gameplay make it nearly impossible to recommend.

Flying Defense Review

Flying Defense Review

By
on October 19th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: FLYING SOLDIERS
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

This app will have gamers slowly rethinking their strategy to overtake the flying menaces.

Developer: eZENplus INC.

Price: Free
Version Reviewed: 1.1.3
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 4

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3.7 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 3.7 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3.7 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 3.7 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.7 out of 5 stars

Flying Defense is a mix between a castle defense game and Angry Birds in that the gamer must fling their soldiers out of a cannon and hit oncoming monsters. The enemies aren’t really monsters in the Halloween ghoul sense, they’re more like flies on steroids with red eyes. They look quite menacing.

At its core, Flying Defense is a bold attempt at creating an interactive gaming experience that puts the player in the role of commander and conquerer with the goal of systematically taking down the flying attackers while en route to taking over the gamer’s castle. However, if speedy gameplay is something the gamer enjoys, they shouldn’t expect much fun from this game. It is all about strategy and the slow gameplay is essential for figuring out how the soldiers fly and at what angles to toss them at to take out the most enemies.

The game mechanics are quite simple. The game starts out with three available soldiers that run out to the end of what looks like a plank. One at a time they jump into the cannon and the gamer must pull back, aim and then fire said soldier towards the flying menaces. As in life, all soldiers are not created equally. This is also one of the reasons I believe the developers made the gameplay a bit slower.

The first three soldiers available include short and squatty, but very speedy, tall and skinny and a tad slower and average height and very hefty which causes them to not fly very far. The only problem is that there is no choice to pick who is flicked at the enemies. It’s one right after the other. This presents another strategic element to overcome.

After they are thrown, they have to walk all the way back to the cannon to be thrown again. For the short and fast character this is no problem, but for the other two it is as they walk slower. To help, there is assistance available from power ups – including fast shoes for faster walking, snow to freeze the enemies in their tracks and lighting to slow them down as well.

Soldiers and items such as speed boosts can be purchased with gold coins. If the gamer is out of coins they can purchase them in-app ranging in price from $.99 to $9.99.

I was initially interested in this game for its unique take on the castle defense genre, but its slow gameplay kept me from truly being immersed in the experience. However, after a few turns at progressing through the game I enjoyed testing out new strategies to take out the flying enemies. Maybe a future update will up the pace of the game, but for now, the game is free and I recommend taking it for a spin.

iAudition Makes Voice Recording Easy And Fast

The built in Voice Memos app does its best to help those who need a voice recording app. It is pretty limited in its execution, however, and frequently lacks functionality that would make it essential for the likes of journalists and voiceover artists in need of recording an audition. This is precisely where iAudition springs into action.

As the name suggests, iAudition enables users to record and edit audio files wherever they are. One of the neatest functions is the ability to send completed files as MP3s directly to anyone via email or FTP site. Such functionality immediately makes iAudition a much faster app than those that rely on a PC connection to convert and send files.

Controls are simple yet effective with the ability to record multiple takes and cut and paste segments together. It all works just right, removing all the effort for the user. There’s even the ability to perform background recording sessions so that the user can read something from the iOS device while recording at the same time.

iAudition is out now priced at $5.99.

Age of Monsters Review

Age of Monsters Review

By
on October 19th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: SIMPLE YET SATISFYING
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Players challenge their friends to massive battles where epic monsters compete in rock, paper, scissors matches.

Developer: Massive Joe Studios

Price: PRICE
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 3GS

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars

Whether it’s deciding who gets to ride shotgun, or who gets the last piece of pizza, rock paper scissors plays in integral part in most friendships. Still, in our age of social media and digital connections, why bother using hands and fingers to play? Why even be in the same room (or ZIP code, for that matter)? Age of Monsters is a game where friends can challenge each other to asynchronous rock, paper, scissors battles from their iOS devices whenever they want. Each battle is also depicted as an epic face-off between two monsters selected by the players.

Everyone has played rock paper scissors and the rules are fairly clear so we won’t waste any time here explaining them. Age of Monsters puts a horrific, monster-filled veneer on the well known “game”, making it a bit more interesting to watch through fully animated monster avatars and unique actions and reactions for every monster. The game also offers players the ability to play asynchronously meaning players can choose their moves and wait for their opponent to choose their moves before seeing the result. Much like the popular word game, Words With Friends. Players are alerted when they are challenged or when an opponent has made their move.

To play, a player must either challenge an opponent or receive a challenge. Currently opponents can only be chosen from the player’s Game Center or Open Feint friends lists, and there is no option to select a random opponent. Once a match is set up between the opponents each player chooses a monster and then selects three choices of rock, paper, or scissors; one for each of the match’s rounds. Once both players have selected the results show and the best out of three wins. There is no need for both players to make selections at the same time either, when the last player has set their choices the other player is alerted and can watch the results play out. Matches are played out with the animated monsters showing their hands and reacting to each round’s result.

The animations are amazing and easily the best part of the game. Watching how all the different monsters act and react is very entertaining. The lack of an option to play a match with a random opponent severely limits the game’s playability though so players should make sure to share the game with their friends if they plan on playing it much. The game looks great, it’s simple, and the matches are satisfying. This game is worth a look for a few minutes of fun here and there.
