The-Fall:
Get ready to survive a long fall down a dangerous shaft. This is not a descent for the weak of heart as players will need to make use of moving platforms to break their downward spiral into darkness. The key is to not miss these platforms and fall off the screen or it is game over. Also, the sky is falling so it will take quick reactions to survive over the long haul to safety.

Grabby Crabby:
Dastardly evil pirates have taken PinPincha’s father hostage and this cannot stand. To rescue the kidnapped father, players need to follow a trail of coins that are leaking from a pirate ship. Catching these coins allows recruiting of powerful allies to aid in this daring rescue mission. There are five different characters, all with their own unique abilities, to utilize in this task. The alternate endings will help in bringing people back for yet another romp along the ocean.

Dark Dot:
Dark Dot is a fun little shooter game with a unique twist. Players control dark dots as they engage the enemy, but these dots maybe formed into just about any shape imaginable. Simply draw any shape in a single stroke and watch as the dotty minions fall into formation, which can then be manipulated in both size and orientation. The excitement keeps going with the ability to revive fallen foes and unleashing super attacks. This is a war won with strategy and imagination.

Assassin’s Creed Rearmed:
This is the very first Assassin’s Creed Multiplayer game that is driven by an in-game economy system. This game features an offline mode for players to hone their skills or just compete with a friend 1on1 style via Bluetooth. Taking the game online means hunting down and assassinating other players, or running away as they return the deadly favor. Both hunter and prey need to utilize the environment and crowd to succeed in their tasks. The included character customization means there is plenty to enjoy at the hefty cost of nothing!

Sad Robot:
Beautiful retro graphics, great tilt controls, and a gorgeous setting is just the beginning to this free game. Players need to guide a robot on his journey through the galaxy to find his lost love while restoring his memories. Doing quests earn coins and experience which maybe traded for upgrades to boost skills and aid in the hunt for a love long-lost. There are also various robots to unlock that come with their own unique set of abilities. This is a gorgeous trip through the black.

Supersonic HD – Was $2.99, now FREE

This Week at 148Apps, October 31-November 4

This week at 148Apps, once we were all finished with our Halloween and post-Halloween merriment, writer Lisa Caplan explored the vast landscape of camera replacement apps for the iPhone. Caplan writes, “Apple has done a lot to improve the native camera app with iOS 5 and lucky iPhone 4S owners are already taking the highest quality iPhone images ever. But, even with the tune up, many of the most requested features from manual adjustments to photo bursts, darkroom effects to more sharing options (Facebook anyone?) are still lacking. But, the app store is filled with alternatives so this week we look at our favorite four camera replacement apps.”

Unlock your iPhone’s photo potential by reading the full article on 148Apps.com.

Over at our kid’s apps headquarters, GiggleApps, Amy Solomon took a closer look at an innovative 3D comic book called The Gwaii. Solomon states, “This app does have some 3D effects as well that are best seen as one moves the device, looking at the additional angles that this provides. The 3D here is effective but somewhat overly sensitive to touch and there have been moments that I wish I would have turned this element off, trying to keep my hand steady to minimize the screen movements. I think this effect may be a distraction for some children, while others may really enjoy this effect.”

Finally, AndroidRundown featured an article by Carter Dotson that attempted to address the iOS versus Android ongoing argument head-on. Dotson says, “The thing to remember, though, is that Android and iOS are different in their very natures. iOS is a piece of Apple software, following Apple principles; it is designed to run on specific hardware. That is a big part of why the experience is often smoother. Android is designed to run on many, many forms of hardware, not just what Google has intended for it to run on. Yes, Google has their stock devices that run a pure Android, but Android is meant to be something bigger, and not as something tailored to one set of hardware. That Android is on the caliber of Android is impressive.”

Add your voice to the argument after reading the full article on AndroidRundown.com.

That is the week that was. What started with Halloween ended with the first onslaught of holiday commercials on television, so keep your eye on 148Apps.com and our Facebook and Twitter streams for the latest reviews and helpful hints to get you through the holiday season. See you next week, readers!

A Tactile Music Navigational Experience From Wall Of Sound

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. Wall Of Sound offers a more attractive way of browsing all the latest music hits than simply looking through iTunes. The Wall Of Sound in question is a screen full of images displaying all the music that can be discovered via iTunes. In each case, the image leads to a preview of the track and then ultimately the option to buy the song from iTunes. For those who already own the revelant track, they can play it via the app.

With email and social networking sharing features as well as AirPlay and background play functionality, Wall Of Sound has it covered on the essential features front. Users in need of a random selection can just shake the iOS device to get a different bunch of tracks making it ideal for new inspiration. It looks particularly splendid on the iPad screen and is very easy to use.

Wall Of Sound is out now and it’s a free, universal app.

Race Of Champions Review

By
on November 3rd, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: VROOOOOOM
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Race of Champions is a great dive into a racing event that doesn’t get as much gaming coverage as others.

Developer: Invictus Games
Price: $4.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 4

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Real Racing 2 has competition on its hands. That’s the most striking thing to come to mind when looking at Race of Champions. It’s a bit of admitted hyperbole, as there’s plenty of room for two excellent racing games on the App Store, but it’s an easy way to explain that Race of Champions is rather good.

Based upon the real life event of the same name, Race of Champions is a racing event covering multiple disciplines. Rather than just testing drivers in the same car type, they’re pitted against each other in numerous different vehicles in a head to head battle for victory. It’s an ideal premise for a racing game and one I’m surprised hasn’t been implemented in a more mainstream way before this.

It’s immediately obvious how visually appealing Race of Champions is. While the crowds may seem a little flat, the cars themselves are pretty gloriously designed with each vehicle looking just how the real thing should look. Currently, there are five cars to use depending on the stage: the KTM X-Bow, popular family car VW Scirocco, RX-150, Solution F Prototype and ROC Car. It’s a varied bunch and a suitable selection to demonstrate just what the competition can offer. It is a little limited given the price and what Real Racing 2 offers but updates are promised with new cars to follow. Each vehicle feels sufficiently different to the last with the handling and physics behind them feeling appropriate.

Offering three different game modes, Race of Champions provides sufficient variety for the price. There’s a Duel Mode enabling players to challenge other real gamers in the online rankings as well as a Time Challenge mode, pitting racers against a ghost car in order to beat the best lap time. The real meat comes in the form of the Championship Mode with four different scenarios and four Championships at the ROC tracks in London, Paris, Dusseldorf and Gran Canaria.

It’s an entertaining and challenging selection, too. Unlike other racing games, this one takes some practice to truly become any good at. Fortunately, the choice of three control methods means that input isn’t a problem. Tilt based controls are the default selection but I found the tap control method, involving tapping to the left or right of the screen to steer, worked best for me. A virtual steering wheel method is also available.

I’d like to see more cars available in Race of Champions but as it stands, it’s a solid racing effort. With such a responsive handling engine and attractive visuals, Race of Champions is a great choice for racing fans looking for something a little different from the usual events.
