Evil Dead Review

Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: FLAWED FUN
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Evil Dead does a pretty good job of turning the original film into a game, but the controls could use a little work.

Ah, Evil Dead. Sure, everyone loves and quotes (constantly) the second and third films in the series, but the original doesn’t get as much love. Granted, Evil Dead 2 is really a remake of the first movie so most people probably feel they don’t need to bother with the other one, but without The Evil Dead there would be no Ash, no Deadites, no boomstick and certainly no chainsaw hand. Maybe it’s because the original hardly gets any love that Trigger Apps decided to base a game on it. Or maybe it was easier to negotiate the rights for it because it’s not as popular. Whatever the reason, Evil Dead is now an iPhone game. A cute, fun, flawed and rather gross iPhone game.

For the unfamiliar, Evil Dead follows the exploits of Ashley Williams (a.k.a. Ash), his friends, sister and girlfriend during a weekend trip to a secluded cabin. They find a book, unleash some demons and start to get picked off one-by-one. Thankfully the whole thing with Cheryl and the trees is only mentioned briefly (don’t ask), but even without the amorous arbors this is still a fairly gruesome tale. Friends turn on each other, people get possessed by Kandarian demons, limbs get hacked off and gore literally covers the screen. Needless to say, this one’s a 12+.

Evil Dead manages to capture the look and feel of the first film quite well, even with the cute and stylized visuals. Most of the levels follow the basic plot of the original, including forcing Cheryl into the cellar, a showdown with a possessed Linda and destroying the Necronomicon to name a few. However only the first chapter, Autumn Horror (comprised of twelve levels), follows the movie. The second chapter, Winter Nightmare (with eighteen levels), is an entirely new side-story in which Ash returns to the cabin and attempts to resurrect his lost loved ones. It doesn’t go well, naturally.

Unfortunately, some of the enjoyment Evil Dead fans will glean from this game gets dampened thanks to spotty controls. Aiming with the shotgun doesn’t feel very fluid and will often result in several shots missing their make before a target is finally taken down. Even worse is the inability to aim accurately with the axe as it merely swings (in an arc) in the direction Ash is facing, resulting in a lot of misses even when standing right in front of an enemy because he’s facing just a little too much to the right. It’s not great, but the platforming segments are by far the worst offenders. Jumping from one rock (or block of ice) to another successfully takes way too much lining up, and even then there’s about a 50/50 chance Ash will end up in the drink. These segments are mercifully kept to a minimum and missing a platform won’t result in an instant death, but that doesn’t make them any less awkward.

Even with the somewhat glaring control issues I still had a lot of fun with Evil Dead. I imagine being a fan of the series helps a lot, but it’s also a pretty good game at its core. The stylized look is well done, it follows the movie almost perfectly and I love the idea of wiping Deadite blood and guts from the screen manually, even if it is a gimmick. And while the controls aren’t great, they aren’t so bad that they make the game unplayable. With a little tweaking, and maybe the ability to switch between weapons so as to conserve shotgun ammo, this could be a great game. As it is, it’s still an enjoyable romp for Evil Dead fans.

Postal Based Fun With Postal Panic

Finally, a game for the British part of me to sink my teeth into. Postal Panic is welcoming to all but its primary focus is on the humble British postcode (the British equivalent of zip codes).

Developed by a bunch of students as part of the Train2Game programme, Postal Panic is all about delivering mail as fast as possible. As the postcode speeds things along, it makes sense that this game requires players to match the corresponding postcode to the parcel.

The game starts out in the London area, increasing across the country. Throughout, an accurate coverage of British postal codes is offered adding a slight educational element to things.

Ultimately though, it’s simple but compelling to play. Right now, it’s also available for the grand price of nothing! Although once it switches to $0.99, 50% of the revenue will be going to the British youth charity, the Prince’s Trust which is a very worthy cause indeed.

Postal Panic is out now for the iPad.

Since the early days of 8-bit gaming there have been many attempts to take a menial chore or type of housework and turn it into a game that people will have fun playing. Apple iOS devices have their own vast swath of chore/work related games. Cooking, parking, auto repair, gardening, farming, and so many other tasks of the like have been converted into iOS games. Mower Ride is another in a long line of games that take the chores we play games to avoid, and turn them into a game themselves. Granted, Mower Ride isn’t focused so much on mowing the lawn as it is living out some fantasized suburban rage ride through countless backyards on a riding mower.

The goal of Mower Ride is to guide a rider on a lawn mower as far as possible through obstacles by tilting the iOS device forward and backward and from side to side. Tilting forward and backward causes the mower to speed up or slow down and tilting side to side moves it left or right on the screen. Using these tilt controls, players guide the mower from backyard to backyard, crashing through hedges and fences on the way and avoiding things like chairs, rocks, pools, and trees. Every once and a while a rival mower will join the fray and the player must knock him off of his mower before he knocks the player off of their own mower.

The mower starts with a full energy bar which drains as the mower drives on; draining more when larger obstacles are hit. Picking up little lighting bolts on the way will refill the energy bar and allow the mower to continue forward. There are also power-ups like boosts and magnets that will attract energy to help players along the way.

There is only one mode in this game, and the goal is always to travel as many meters as possible before running out of juice or crashing. The terrain is randomly generated, so each play through is different from the last. This keeps things from going too stale, but the overall game play doesn’t change or progress much from game to game. Mower Ride is fun, but really only makes the cut as a quick diversion.

eduTecher Backpack looks to be an amazingly useful resource for teachers and those in the world of education. Created by Adam Bellow, eduTecher started as a site to organize the literally thousands of online resources available for teachers and those involved in education. Now it’s in its second iteration as a universal app it acts as a portal to connect a wealth of information. This includes educational links, “how to” webisodes, and a wealth of subject matter content between your computer, iPad and iPhone. It also allows you to share blogs, favorites and notes with a growing community of eduTecher Backpack users by signing up for a free account.

Educational links are searchable by name, keyword, or by tapping a “Subject/Level” button that lets you choose between thirteen subjects and five grade levels to hone down your search to get at what’s most helpful. There are well over 1,000 links that are available in a simple icon mode, or a detailed mode where a descriptive paragraph is displayed in a scrolling listing. Once you’ve found what you need, you can share your finds on Twitter, Facebook or email. The link can also be added to your favorites list, notes can be added, or you can open the page in Safari.

eduTecher TV is chock full of an ever-increasing number of five to ten minute videos explaining the use of instructional tools and methods. These display in the app, not opening in YouTube, so they can be safely played in any school.

The community functions can either connect a class or a community of practice of like minded teachers. Use the app to email friends and when accepted your contacts can view your favorites listing and read your notes, and blog posts. Each user gets their own in-app blog. The app also contains forums. Alerts to post responses can gotten had through email or RSS.

Backpacks (all your information) can be accessed from any iOS device or the web, so save it on your iPhone and it’s on your iPad. This convenient and useful app has just undergone a major revision from being a simple RSS reader to being a full functioned resource. There are no ads and everything is free, so if you are a teacher or student involved in educational technology, go and grab it.
