Junk Jack Brings Minecraft Style Gameplay to 2D and iOS

PixBits is a new indie mobile development software company. The two guys who are making this game met playing Minecraft, and decided to bring that game’s particular vibe to a 2D side-scrolling platform/mining hybrid. The resulting game, Junk Jack, is shaping up to be a fairly significant 2D homage to the Minecraft and Terraria games, complete with chests, mining, building, doors and even mobs. We’re pretty big Minecraft fans around here, so we’re fairly excited, to say the least.

Just pause a minute and watch the video they just produced – it’s all that’s needed to see how amazing this game is looking.

The game is currently in beta testing, only for iPhone and iPod touch (though an iPad and OSX version may be in the cards, according to their FAQ), and will most likely be launched for $2.99. Stay tuned right here for more details as we find them out, for sure.

Favorite Four: Sudoku Apps

Sudoku has become as popular as crossword puzzles and iOS devices of all sizes make ideal companions for this particular brand of endless (and paperless) number puzzle solving. This Sudoku game has a full 16 levels of difficulty all of which are unlocked from the start. This version has a "multi-stage hint system" where first the game just reminds a puzzler to double check a square followed by more clues up to a complete illustration of how the puzzle should be solved. Big Bad Sudoku Book

Apple's choice for their Game Starter Kit, Big Bad Sudoku Book has an intuitive interface, allows background apps to run, and like >Sudoku there is a scoring system, but here the leaderboards are on Game Center. Its key feature is "highlights" which allows players to highlight rows, a specific number on the grid, or whatever helps focus attention on problem areas. Challenge mode is particularly fun with 50 increasingly difficult puzzles that must be unlocked sequentially.

Social Sudoku

The classic with a great twist, Social Sudoku, as the name implies allows solvers to compete against one another via Game Center. There is even a cooperative mode for solving together. Aeronautical Charts App + Pilots = Apple Keynote Photo

One of the features of Apple’s “Let’s talk iPhone” keynote was that they discussed how the iPad is being applied in different fields. One such usage is with pilots in their cockpits. Instead of carrying around paper versions of documents like flight manuals and charts, pilots are starting to use the iPad to view these documents, replacing heavy books with the far lighter and more portable iPad. But how exactly are these people doing this? One such app that caters to pilots wishing to replace paper documents in the cockpit is Aeronautical Charts.

This app allows for the display of charts in a variety of formats on the iPad; the app is universal, so it will work on the iPhone and iPod touch in case charts need to be viewed on a smaller device. The app claims to support over 50 file formats, from various image file formats, office formats, along with TIFF and PDF files. Charts can either be loaded in through iTunes Connect, or the app can sync up with Dropbox. It only uses Dropbox for downloading files, it will not alter the files on the server in any way.

Now, some of these charts can be very large files, not just in file size but in sheer resolution, due to the detail that these charts need to have. In this case, the app can pre-render files in order to make them easier to view through the app. This can either be done through Aeronautical Charts itself, with support for multitasking for continuing the process in the background while other apps are used, or through a Mac App Store app that can prerender files for use through the app.

I’m a working iPhone mom, so of course I have a calendar and task management app. On top of organizing my own life and my family's, I recently got into the business of group blogging. My co-writers and I were looking for an easy way to create group to-dos and easily communicate about any task.

My partner discovered Orchestra To-do recently, and we no longer have two writers covering the same thing, nor a long list of unclaimed topics getting stale. And it cost of all of nothing to get organized using this simple, intuitive, group – and personal – to-do list manager.

Once downloaded users create groups, for example one for family, one for work, and one for personal use. Invitations to other members on a list can be sent in-app and once everyone has accepted and installed Orchestra the rest is almost magic.

At a tap, users can type or even speak to create a new task, assign it to a list and to a member of the group. They can also easily star the task if it is urgent, or swipe for three deadline options: today, soon and someday. There are filters to sort tasks and it's easy to access any or all of the lists or add new ones. Users can even shake their iPhone to see only the tasks assigned to them.

The app will notify users internally of any updates to a project or send push notices when the app is not in use. Orchestra uses web synching to keep all users on all iPhones constantly updated and best, tasks can be created and messages replied to via email.

Members can also add avatars, create a profile, change backgrounds and set viewing preferences in the settings menu.

But, there are some oversights in this pre version 1.0 release – most importantly the ability to add specific due dates. Also, task deleting is not possible at present, nor can more than one person be assigned to each entry. There are no reminders and iPad integration would be nice.

But, Orchestra's GUI is clean, the speed of internal chatting and updating is remarkable, and it's nice to trust that our group can function without everyone being online or checking their emails at the same time. Best of all, I just enjoy being able to "assign" my husband the task of picking up the milk.

Watee is a strange amorphous blob and he is your pet. Watee is apparently also a very clean pet and likes to bathe frequently. In order to provide water for their pet’s cleanly habit, players must trap as much falling water as they can in a bowl for Watee to use.

The game Watee is based on fluid physics and the gameplay centers on working with these fluid physics and using the environment and different items in each level to guide water from a valve at the top of the screen down to the bowl at the bottom of the screen. The game’s levels are varied in their layouts and might include several different hazards or obstacles. For example, there are heating elements that will turn any water that touches them into steam that rises out of the level ineffectively. Sometimes these obstacles will counteract each other. For instance, a cooler will turn steam back into water and the water will fall to the ground again.

Many of Watee’s levels also include items that can be moved and rotated to help guide the water down to the bowl. Using these items will be essential in finding the solution to each level. As water begins filling the bowl, are percentage counts off how close the player is to filling the bowl. When the counter reaches one hundred percent, the level is complete. There is only a limited amount of water available in each level so players need to be clever about how they place their items in each level.

Ultimately, physics games live and die by the dependability of their physics. If the physics play out in bizarre, unpredictable ways it makes it very difficult to complete levels or even enjoy the game. The fluid physics in Watee are not readily recognizable as a passable water simulation, but they are consistent and predictable. The “water” in this game acts more like thousands of tiny, cascading marbles but the effect is decidedly fluid-like and it plays out well in the game. Anyone looking for a new physics game to have a good time experimenting with will enjoy the challenge here.
