Despite the fact that the Emmys took place in mid September, the television staple marks the beginning of a busy award season. As the build up to the Academy Awards begins, it only seems natural to take a look at some of the Emmy nominees that are making waves on the silver screen as well.

The Emmys app gives users a fascinating look behind the curtain at what goes on at the big event, and a special glimpse at some of their favorite stars most candid moments from the red carpet. Sure the event is long gone, but the insight that it can provide into the world of celebrity is priceless.

Full bios of all nominees are also available, so if your star of choice is also a threat in the cinema, there are plenty of useful nuggets available from this free app.  Most people will never get the chance to walk the red carpet, so why not try this app now?

Little Lost Chick HD Review

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: CHALLENGING CHICKS
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Cutesy based physics puzzle fun is plentiful here. There’s a fair amount of challenge, too.

Making a physics based puzzler into a game that feels relatively fresh and interesting really isn’t an easy task these days. There are just so many games within the genre on the app store. Fortunately, Little Lost Chick HD makes a pleasant change, offering a few different physics-based puzzling tricks all rolled into one.

It’s all because of poor little Bruce the chick who’s managed to get lost a fair distance away, given the fact that he’s got to make his way through 100 different levels in order to get home to his Mom. At first, it’s very much business as usual. The early stages introduce the core concepts behind traversing each level with grassy blocks that can be tapped and thus removed, clearing the way for Bruce. Gravity plays an important role here as Bruce can’t move around on his own. Instead it’s the environment that has to be manipulated.

Blocks aren’t everything, however, with an increasing array of methods to move Bruce around, including catapults and enemy frogs. Vines play a particularly useful role, gripping onto platforms until cut with a swipe of a finger. Multi touch is possible and in some cases essential for success, meaning that timing is everything. It’s not long before moving platforms and wheel shaped platforms need to be similarly manipulated. It’s pretty challenging but rarely unfairly so. The main challenge comes from the three eggs scattered around each stage that can be collected along the way. They’re not essential but they’re satisfying to acquire, particularly in later stages of the game.

For the physics based puzzle fan, Little Lost Chick is an ideal purchase. The adorable visuals will keep many happy but just because it looks innocent doesn’t mean that it’s a pushover. Underneath the surface is enough challenge to ensure that players will keep returning to Little Lost Chick until they reach the conclusion.

Burnout Crash Coming To iOS

Console gamers will almost certainly have heard of the Burnout franchise. It’a a racing game series that focuses on causing havoc and destruction much more so than keeping to a tight racing line. Experienced through various different methods, the latest instalment is that of Burnout Crash!, recently released on Xbox Live Arcade and Sony’s PSN and now announced for iOS.

The iOS release of Burnout Crash! is set to allow players to ‘wreak as much havoc as possible by causing massive multi-car pile ups for mega-points’. Players can use Crashbreaker explosions and in-air aftertouch controls to steer their wreck into oncoming traffic, just like other games in the series. To reinforce the high score aiming side of the game, there’ll also be Autolog support to enable players to connect, compare and compete with their friends.

Using intuitive taps and swipes to steer vehicles and trigger explosions, Burnout Crash! should provide an ideal and fun experience across three game modes, 18 traffic junctions and six different locations. Children of the 1980s will be particularly excited to hear the 80s based soundtrack featuring the likes of Vanilla Ice and Gloria Estefan.

No set release date has yet been given for Burnout Crash! but holiday season suggests it’ll be before the end of the year. We’ll keep up to date on any developments.

Frantic, furious and wonderful. Top down shooters don’t get much better than this.

Super Crossfire HD is an utterly glorious retro themed yet original arcade shooter. Can I go back to playing it now? Oh, I have to offer even more reasons behind why this title is a must buy for all iOS device owners? Ok, Super Crossfire HD is the most fun I’ve had with a shooter since Space Invaders: Infinity Gene, high praise indeed.

Much of it is down to Super Crossfire HD‘s simplicity. The graphics are reminiscient of Geometry Wars with no hint of a storyline going on. All the player needs to know is that a series of shapes are firing at them and they need to dodge out of the way while shooting back. It’s retro shooting at its purest and fastest, with no hint of slowdown in sight. It’s the kind of hook that makes it so easy to dive right into for a short burst then realize that far too much time has passed. I should know, it just happened to me mid way through this sentence. Much of this success is down to the elusive twist within Super Crossfire HD: the ability to flip or warp from the bottom to the top of the screen at any time.

It’s extremely easy to implement, much like the rest of the game. Shooting is taken care of automatically leaving the player to move from left to right and warping is utilized by tapping two fingers on the screen at the same time. Moving from left to right comes with three methods of doing so: sliding, tilting or buttons. While not usually a fan of sliding type methods (favoring good old fashioned buttons typically), it works perfectly here. It might mean that players find themselves with their fingers attached to their iOS device at all time but that’s fine.

Five chapters and over 150 different enemy waves means that there’s plenty to be getting on with with an upgrade system offering further interests to players. Each enemy craft, of which there are 19 in all, provide different behaviors and attack patterns to adjust to, each as wonderfully intuitive as the rest of the game. Super Crossfire HD is a keenly designed game indeed, right down to the difficulty levels that provide plenty of challenge but never too much for the novice.

The only failing within Super Crossfire HD is the musical score which is a bit weak compared to the rest of the game. A more buzzing and unique soundtrack, or at least a way of playing custom tracks, would have gone a long way here. It’s a small flaw in an otherwise fantastic game though. Having played it on both iPhone and iPad, the game never falters to draw me in and understandably so. Can I go back to playing it now? Good.

Who’s a big film fan, then? I know I certainly am. I’ve spent years trawling the Apple Trailers site since back when the idea of viewing film trailers on a website was revolutionary. Now I can do it through a new app by the name of iTunes Movie Trailers.

The app does exactly what the name suggests, offering the newest and most exclusive movie previews in HD at the fingertips of all iOS device owners who choose to download this free app.

Users can browse trailers, clips and featurettes for all the biggest movies, as well as view spectacular HD photos, view a year long calendar of upcoming movie releases and find showtimes at cinemas near them.

Hundreds of movie trailers are available in all and a quick glance already shows the best of the best are on display such as Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Besides tracking what the networks reckon are the biggest hits, users can also browse the charts to see what other people are downloading the most for inspiration as to what to check out.

iTunes Movie Trailers is out now. It’s universal, it’s free, it’s the ideal app for movie fans.
