Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls Review

Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: VERY OLD SCHOOL
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls is an uncompromising RPG that’s bound to please series fans and role-playing purists. Assuming they can put up with a few missteps.

Sometimes classic games don’t age too well. What was once exciting and compelling can seem laborious and dull upon retrospect. It’s a mistake that would be easy to make when starting up Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls for the first time, but sticking with it will reveal a completely worthwhile role-playing experience.

This is a “classic” in practically every sense of the word. There’s very little guidance and hardly any of that tutorial nonsense plagued by modern games. Players are essentially left to fend for themselves at first. If they neglect to purchase the proper supplies or leave without a decent party, chances are they’re going end up as kobold chow within minutes.

Rigid though the structure may be, Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls does quite well to satisfy that RPG-itch. Character portraits and enemy illustrations are quite pleasant to look at (even if they don’t ever actually move), and many of them can be viewed at-will in a gallery. Aside from the expectant quests and loot-gathering, party members can be switched around at-will or custom-made in order to hone the group into a well-oiled killing machine. And after enough progress is made they can switch classes, keeping their current stats and abilities while gaining new ones pertaining to their new role.

The downside to all this “old-school-ness” is that sometimes it gets in the way of the fun. Equipment management is a pain, with items split separately between party members. It amounts to a whole lot of tedious menu-jumping. Buying stuff from the shop is a similar exercise in irritation as money is divvied up by the party and items can only be purchased by an individual. On the dungeoneering side of things, status effects can totally decimate an excursion if the proper spells or items aren’t available. I mean, I almost lost my entire party due to poison. Poison!

Another unfortunate issue is that the free content doesn’t last very long. Even the most unlucky adventurers should be able to map-out the entire dungeon floor within a couple of hours, and once that’s done all that remains is to grind, complete a quest or two, hunt for loot and start training characters in new classes. But overall my biggest gripe is that the buttons aren’t very responsive. It seems like a good third of the time I’ll tap a button and it just won’t respond, forcing me to tap multiple times to get it to register.

It may sound like I disliked my time spent with Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. I certainly wouldn’t call it “accessible” or “friendly to casual players,” but it’s a solid Classic RPG. One that can easily cover the cost of unlocking the whole dungeon, higher character levels and hours upon hours of gameplay (all for a $10 in-app purchase) if given the chance.

Runners Interval Timer Review

Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: RUN, WALK, RUN
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Runner’s Interval Timer allows runners to set up two different time intervals for interval training. The simple interface and iOS integration make it easy to use and helpful for those who prefer this type of training.

Interval training is a type of training that involves periods of high intensity followed by periods of low intensity. For example, a runner may want to sprint for two minutes, followed by a one-minute cool down period, followed by another two-minute sprint. For runners who take their iPhones with them while they train, Runner’s Interval Timer helps them keep track of their timed training intervals.

The interface of the app is pretty straightforward. Users are given the option to set up two different intervals. Each interval can be given a time duration, title, notification sound and color. Once each interval is set up, a simple touch of the "Start Timer" button sets the intervals in motion. Users can listen to music through the iPhone music app while Runner's Interval Timer is running and the notification sound to switch intervals will pause the music momentarily to announce the change.

There are a few features in this app that I really liked. First off, I like the variety of notification sounds available. Notifications can be anywhere from a simple chime to a male or female voice saying "Run", "Walk", "Jog" or "Sprint". I also really liked how simple it is to set everything up. It only took me a few seconds before my run to get my intervals ready. The interface is really basic with only a few options that make it very user-friendly.

I do have one complaint. The app only allows me to set two different intervals. I really wish it gave me the option to add more than two intervals. At periods during my run I like to walk, jog and sprint. This is a personal preference and I'm sure many runners out there are fine with only two intervals. However, I have seen this capability in other interval apps and I think this app would be greatly enhanced if it were able to add this feature.

Runner's Interval Timer does everything that it advertises to do. I found it be useful for interval training and it is well integrated into the iPhone OS. Although it is very basic, it gets the job done while having enough features to merit the price.

Whew. We’re not totally sure what happened after Monday’s top 5 extravaganza of app deals, but maybe having so many without any checks and balances cause a similar reaction as that of eating too much Halloween candy. In other words, we had an App Deal hangover, which is only now starting to clear. To make up for it, here are some great app deals for today:

Dink – Was $0.99, now FREE
Create animations nothing more than your iPhone and your finger, then share to MyDink.net, Twitter, Facebook, Youtube or by email.

Epic War TD – iPad Edition – Was $0.99, now FREE
A tower defense that looks like old school Starcraft, ready for your free download today. The iPhone version is also FREE.

Muffin Knight – Was $0.99, now FREE
If I have to hear the mellifluous voice of the actress in Muffin Knight who calls out the names of the characters players switch to after each muffin is claimed, I’m gonna scream. My kids love this game so much that I want to inflict it upon you, for free.

Blogsy Review

By
on November 3rd, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: BLOGGER'S BUDDY
iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad

Blogsy is intuitive feature packed mobile blogging for iPad

Developer: Fomola
Price: $4.99
Version: 2.4.2
App Reviewed on: iPad 2

iPad Integration Rating: 4.75 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 4.75 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.67 out of 5 stars

Since this revue of a Blogsy is going to be posted to a blog, it seemed logical that the best way to try it out would be to create the review right in Fomola's blogging app. This app allows users to create posts for several popular hosting sites like WordPress, Blogger and Posterous from start to finish on the iPad. Blogsy not only has a visual as well as HTML editor, it allows for drag and drop placement of pictures and videos. The app integrates with Flickr, Picasa, YouTube and Google’s image search along with having access to the iPad photo library allowing users to access both images and videos with simple and intuitive moves.

Setting up Blogsy with the blog hosting site is quick and painless as are the basic functions, but the app comes complete with FAQs, text instructions and a series of video guides to help any level of blogger get going. Blogsy has a “write” side which is, of course where users enter text and code, and a “rich” side where the drag and drop formatting is done.

Adding titles, tags and categories is a breeze; Blogsy searches the blog for existing categories allowing a user to select from them, and all previously used tags are also available, or new ones can be entered in the set up panel. This is the same place where authors can set publishing time and manage other logistics.

The app makes linking easier than it is on a computer. Simply select the words to be linked and enter the URL manually or open a web browser to just drag and drop the information into place.

Blogsy integrates with all the services mentioned above, and once an image is selected it can be placed, resized and aligned on the “rich” side of the editor. Text formatting is simple and familiar, similar to the web based editors out there.

The one issue I can report is that switching between the two editors is easy but is required so often in a graphics rich document that it can become tiresome. Beyond that, creating this post has been just as effortless as creating it on my Mac and uploading it directly.

Posts can be saved as drafts, so those new to Blogsy can test before committing the post to the internet’s perma-memory. As I expected, my blog’s particular third-party template could not be accommodated using the drag and drop features. I am sure adding the appropriate instructions would not prove overly difficult. I will need to do a little formatting before I publish this post, but what you are seeing is very close to what I made right from my iPad. For those looking for a truly mobile and truly intuitive blogging solution on iPad look no further. Blogsy is a winner.
