Simplicity is sometimes all that’s ever needed in an app, especially one that facilitates creativity. Daedalus Touch is one such app. While other text editors like to flood the user with a flurry of options and buttons, Daedalus Touch cuts it all back to the bare minimums ensuring that there are no distractions.
It works pretty well too. Anyone with writer’s block knows how easy it is to be easily distracted or spend far too long fiddling around with the font when really they should just be getting on with the matter at hand. Daedalus Touch simply provides users with a word and character count in the right hand corner and a few other simple options in the top left corner. Even auto correct has to be manually turned on which is a blessing for users who enter a lot of custom words and don’t want to be disturbed by that judgemental red line.
At first, it might feel a little too restrictive. It took me a few days for it to truly settle in as my new favorite text editor. Then the beauty sank in. Even the interface of Daedalus Touch is ideally suited to the minimalist iPad nature. Users simply swish a finger across the screen to switch between the sheets. There’s no folder or file management here, just simply pages that can be seen on the screen. A brief pinch of the screen and the piles of sheets and stacks of papers are apparent. It’s all quite fluid and intuitive, right down to the ability to manually sort through the pages.
Users looking for more functionality also have the option to simply either mail the file elsewhere or open it with another iPad text editor such as Pages or iAWriter.
Daedalus Touch is pretty refreshing in its simple approach. While it might have been nice to be able to increase the font size for accessibility reasons and searching could do with automatically taking the user to relevant pages, it’s a pretty complete app.
