I’ve got a sneaky suspicion that something like Oh Greetings is going to be the next big thing. It’s been mooted before by the likes of ThankYouPen and now Oh Greetings has come along offering even more choice to the world of e-greetings via iPhone.

The app is a free app to download with cards costing $3.95 each and the promise of worldwide delivery making it an excellent price indeed. Via the app, users choose their favorite card, enter what they’d like to be written inside it and where to send it. The app currently supports Paypal payments with credit card functionality to be added in a later update for ultimate convenience.

The cards themselves are a varied bunch with something for every occasion from birthdays to father’s day or anniversaries. Even belated birthdays are catered for here. Different types are also available with Landscapes, Wildlife and Cartoon/Light Hearted images all for the taking.

Oh Greetings is out now. Give it a shot the next time a celebration is coming up.

AOL, the once giant ISP of the interwebz seems to be struggling to find its place into today's tech culture and one of the most recent effort is Editions by AOL – a news aggregator they recently launched for iPad. It's designed to look and feel like a print magazine. But, it feels rushed and derivative, not new and exciting.

Editions is customizable. Users can add their Facebook, Twitter and calendar events, and of course their AIM account. There are several color schemes and 16 subsections like world and local news, sports or entertainment. Readers drag their picks and set them in order of priority. From that information and for US residents only, a zip code, a special user edition is created and made to look as close to a print mag as possible right down to a pseudo bar code and mailing label.

Readers tap to open and are presented with Facebook birthdays, calendar events and a weather forecast, the lead story and a navigation panel. Frankly I think heavy social media users will go to a dedicated app for or the site their fix and those on a tight schedule will likely have checked their agenda before stopping for a read. But even if this sort of social media integration appeals, there is little of it and Flipboard did it first and does it better.

Here users can set text size, delivery time, and browse by section or article. Navigation is all tap and swipe the latter of which leads to the table of contents that gives the highlights and access to a complete list of the contents. The app works only in portrait mode, my first inkling I wasn't going to fall in like, and load time is on the long side.

At the top of each article is a section full of blue boxes, which is where the customization comes in. One box has the news source and the rest have keywords based on the text. Users can opt to read less or more. Nice, but this is straight out of Zite, which has a much more elegant sidebar placement. 

It is possible to add feeds to Editions, but only the ones AOL curates. There is no complete source list to be found so it's hit or miss. Enter a site and if AOL has it, great if not, not. Don't expect to see or add your favorite smaller sites or find hidden gems. In addition, only select articles can be read in-app and offline.

AOL presents a nice personal reading experience, but we've been there and done that many times on the iPad. There’s just nothing groundbreaking here – the interface, graphics, layout and features are a step back from the best news apps out there. Without a major makeover, Editions for AOL is a miss.

Taekwondo, like all the martial arts of the world, is as much about its heritage and culture as it is about learning self defense and enjoying as a form of exercise or sport. As the national sport of South Korea, there’s much to learn about the traditions of this ancient art. Fortunately, there’s an app to aid in learning that knowledge courtesy of What Design Studio.

TKD Notes, available in both iPhone and iPad varieties, covers all of the fundamental Taekwondo techniques. There’s a concise explanation of how to carry out each movement as well as interactive photos that help users visualise each phase of the movement. Eight videos focused on poomsaes also help beginners and more experienced students learn their way around the subject. Information about the history and vocabulary is available along with a belt test section.

It’s all done through an attractive and traditional appearance to add to the whole experience. Hopefully TKD Notes will be an ideal way to understand the theory behind this noble martial art.

Cryptograms: puzzles in which each letter from a quote has been replaced by another letter, creating a coded message. (I.e., A’s become R’s and B’s become E’s, etc.) Cryptogram is a simple app, but the puzzles are fun and cryptogram fans will love it.

What’s a cryptogram? Generally, a cryptogram is a text written in code. In the iPhone/iPad game Cryptogram, however, a cryptogram is a puzzle in which every letter in a text has been swapped to a corresponding letter, and you try to decipher the result. (This type of encoding is technically called a monoalphabetic substitution cipher.) Cryptogram comes packed with such puzzles. It’s a very simple game, but also one that has the potential to keep code-lovers busy for hours.

Each puzzle is a quote that has been transformed into code, and the player’s goal is to decode the puzzle. Each code-letter corresponds to one “real” letter, so to try and decode the message the player must guess which letters correspond to which. By default, Cryptogram will tell you if a guess is incorrect (and penalize you if so) but this option can be switched off.

Of course, random guesses won’t do much good. Instead, making educated guesses by using things like frequency and letter/word combinations is the key to solving the cryptograms. For example, a single-letter word must be “A” or “I”; similarly, words like “THE” and “AND” are easy to guess, and letters that are repeated back-to-back (like the L’s in “WELL”) are also good hints.

There are plenty of puzzles included with Cryptogram, with more available via in-app purchase. The original puzzles are sorted by length (though don’t assume that longer puzzles are harder; sometimes more data makes a puzzle easier to solve). Game Center integration provides leaderboards and achievements, though I was somewhat disappointed by the unimaginative “I’ve solved x puzzles!” nature of the achievements. If I had one complaint, it would be that the keyboard is sometimes too small. But in general, the app is elegant and its design gets out of the way of the puzzles it revolves around—always a plus in my book.

Cipher-lovers will find plenty of entertainment with Cryptogram. It’s a very old concept, and certainly not unique, but Cryptogram is a solid app with plenty of puzzles, and I’ve enjoyed it a lot.

This week, August 22-26, Starbucks introduced a new promotion that features free app downloads for its ka-jillion coffee drinking-customers, similar to the company’s method of distributing free song downloads. 148Apps writer Carter Dotson notes, “What will be interesting to see the effect this has on apps offered in the promotion; Shazam Encore has jumped up to #6 in the App Store recently, which may be due to this feature. This could be due to each redeemed copy going toward the app's sales, or it could be because the promotion is working exactly how it's intended; by giving the app away for free, people are talking about it and recommending it, causing other people to pay for it.”
