MagicalPad Review

Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: GET THINGS DONE
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

MagicalPad is an essential iPad app for taking freeform notes as well as creating outlines and checklists.

I run my business out of my home and find myself searching for get things done, task management and organizational apps a lot. Beyond the daily to-dos, I also find myself writing down random notes on different pieces of paper in my office, on my kitchen table and just about anywhere I find paper and a pen.

While I’m a big fan of Orchestra for its ability to assign tasks as an individual or within a group, MagicalPad has given me a platform to create the necessary to-do lists as well as organize my thoughts, outlines and go beyond single tasks. And it only costs $.99 for this feature rich app that helps manage my business and personal life.

When downloaded, any number of individuals can create a fully structured outline of tasks, ideas, meeting notes or class notes. For instance, since I work from home I use MagicalPad to organize my meeting agendas for the two or three client calls I have each week. With the app I can list items, break out by importance and check off as we go through the agenda. If a change or new item comes up during the meeting I can easily add directly onto the workspace.

While it’s very functional, it is also visually laid out intuitively so structuring or quickly capturing thoughts and ideas is quick and easy. From experience, most GTD apps take too much time to input information and that time could have been used to simply finish the task.

The user interface reacts to simple commands such as tap to select a box, double tap to create a box as well as to type, and use a two-finger swipe to move the workspace around. However, the double tap caused some confusion early on due to that move normally being reserved for zooming in and out on the iPad. It takes a few sessions to get used to it. To zoom, there is a specific zoom tool on the bottom toolbar.

Another useful feature is the virtual joystick in the bottom right corner that allows the user to maneuver around the workspace as well.

In addition to all the workspace tools, the MagicalPad workspace can be saved on Google docs, Evernote, Dropbox as well as emailed. The share features combined with the app’s intuitive design and workflow makes it an essential app for freeform notes, outlines and checklists.

High Flyer Death Defyer Review

Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: FALLING MADNESS
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

High Flyer Death Defyer breaks out of the side scroller genre with a skydiving fantasy world of comic book style art complete with monsters and visually appealing design.

Games were never meant to trap individuals into a zombie-like state of mind where all feeling is lost. They were meant to unleash long lost worlds, new fantasy realms and make the impossible, possible. Where most games fall short on iOS is when they continue to recreate the wheel. High Flyer Death Defyer breaks away from that very norm.

The game takes the user on a genre-bending comic book art style, sky diving adventure rather than the familiar side scroller game mechanics. While I have absolutely no problem with side scrollers, I revel at the chance to review games from indie developers – the ones that find new ways to turn gaming back into an experience.

At first sight, I wasn’t sure how my iPhone 4 was going to handle the fast speeds and serious gameplay that High Flyer Death Defyer offers. The game throttled my iPhone 4′s accelerometer and I thought itwas going to turn the game into a jittering annoyance, but to my enjoyment it was smooth no matter the number of fast free falls I made to scoop up points, speed through rings and evade mechanically augmented gargantuan monsters.

The best feature of the game is the virtual skydiving as well as the attention to level design. As mentioned above, it is completely different than what is normally used to get player from point A to point B and adds a nice touch for dynamic gaming.

To control the jetpack-equipped character, the gamer uses a small – optional but on by default – joystick on the bottom left of the screen. While this controls the direction, other controls such as dive, roll and land are on the bottom right and upper right. While the joystick provides an easier level of difficulty, make sure to go to settings and deselect it for a true skydiving test. Beware, it ups the ante, but then again, it also ups the re-playability.

I had my initial doubts about the gameplay mechanics of a falling character as side scrollers are always a sure bet. Then I took High Flyer Death Defyer’s for a spin and was surprised at the level of entertainment it provided. Indie developers such as Game Mechanic Studios are a true source of innovation.

Walkin’ ‘Round a Zombie Wonderland 2!

Get those boards ready! Find a clean mop head! Load that shotgun! Chuck is back to protect and cleanse Niceville once more.

Taking it’s cues from the original Zombie Wonderland, Zombie Wonderland 2: Outta Time! puts players back into the over-worked and under-appreciated shoes of the town’s most renowned zombie-slayer/janitor. There haven’t been that many specifics given out as of yet, but it appears as though Chuck’s continued adventures in “Why the Heck Would Anyone Choose to Live Here, USA” will be a whole ‘lotta “more.” More clients, such as the viking, Jorund. More weapons, including the Wasp Grenade. More enemies like the Zombie Knight. And more time periods in which to mop up the living dead mess, then mop up the other living dead mess.

However, the biggest change (aside from being downright bigger in the first place) is that Zombie Wonderland 2 will follow a free-to-play model, with in-app purchases. Again, no other specifics have been given but I’m assuming that means paying real cash for either more in-game cash to buy upgrades, paying real cash up front for said upgrades/levels, or a combination of the two. Of course, within a few weeks there won’t be any more questions because the game should be out by then, but why not take a gander at the new trailer and gallery of concept art to whet that whistle?

Mini Motor Racing To Offer Game Changing iOS Features

For iOS gaming fans, one of the most exciting things about new operating system releases is how the new features will be implemented by upcoming games. A classic example of this is with Mini Motor Racing, set for release this year and with a bunch of iOS5 based features thrown in.

The title has been in development for much of this year with a gameplay trailer released back in March. Clearly a lot of effort is being put into it.

Mini Motor Racing promises a heck load of different options. There will be 20 different tracks plus day and night races to make for a lengthy single player campaign encompassing a series of race-circuit cups. 4 different vehicle types – sports, hatch, big-rig and pick-up – will be available. Multiplayer support for up to 4 players will also be included with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity as well as Game Center and Open Feint support for leaderboard racing. Plus, for those after the flexible touch, a variety of control settings are also possible.

For devices running iOS5, there’s the most exciting side of things: iCloud and AirPlay connectivity.

All race data from the game will be stored online through iCloud, meaning users can pick up where they left off regardless of what device they choose to play Mini Motor Racing on. This information includes racing stats, race circuit progress status, unlocks, achievements and best lap times.

The AirPlay functionality means that players will be able to mirror races from the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 to the TV screen for an even more exciting experience.

Mini Motor Racing is already shaping up to be something special with some fantastic looking visuals so hopefully these new iOS5 based features will cement the game’s position as an enjoyable Micro Machines style experience.

We’ll be sure to keep up to date on Mini Motor Racing‘s progress. For now, check out the screenshots and trailer below.
