Lifestyle Store PacSun Introduces Its Own App

Apps aimed at helping save shoppers money seem to be all the rage at the moment. So Pacific Sunwear (or PacSun as many consumers may recognise it as) has chipped in with their own effort.

PacSun offers quite a few features for its customers. There’s push notification which informs consumers when they’re near a PacSun location via the GPS integration. They are then sent targeted messages about any discounts or deals going on at the time. Users can also scan QR codes that are on window displays, in-store advertisements or in magazines. These QR codes then allow the user to listen to music from popular New Zealand rock band, The Naked and Famous, as well as take a look at behind the scenes videos and even acquire coupon codes.

Finally, users can search and buy PacSun products right from their iPhone. They can also create and save outfits made up of PacSun products to see how different combinations would work as well as share them with friends.

PacSun is available now as a free download and is compatible with all iOS devices.

Puzzle Sphere Review

Puzzle Sphere Review

By
Timothy Smith on June 2nd, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: TILTED FUN
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Puzzle Sphere is a tilt control game with loads of levels and some frustratingly good puzzles. Action puzzle fans might discover a new addiction after a few rounds with the new title made by Puzzle Brothers.

Developer: Puzzle Brothers

Price: $1.99
Version: 1.1
App Reviewed on: iPad

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.13 out of 5 stars

Any type of tilt based gameplay mechanics are usually a turn off for me, but in the case of “ball in a labyrinth” style games I always make an exception. Puzzle Sphere is a 2D rendition of the classic labyrinth game with added obstacles and a goal driven formula that tasks players with collecting crystals to earn stars. Those stars in turn unlock new themed worlds and more challenges. The game is an odd mix of old and new territory, and it manages to be quite entertaining.

In Puzzle Sphere players must guide a ball down several platforms and into a teleportation gate. The catch is there are crystals to collect, a score timer, and several nasty obstacles to avoid (buzz saws, spikes, lasers, bees, and all other manner of evil). The physics in Puzzle Sphere are a little hard to get used to at first because the ball builds momentum faster than expected, but once I mastered it I was zooming through levels and having a blast. Most of the puzzles are cleverly designed and intuitive, but a few were nightmarishly frustrating. Normally I would complain about an uneven difficulty curve, but the addictive gameplay kept me returning for more punishment. Plus, victory is much sweeter after failing a level 20 times before. I think the key to success in Puzzle Sphere is patience, but I like how the timer clock adds a sense of urgency to each stage. The game also features some snazzy backgrounds and appropriate music; it has a great presentation because the graphics used are mostly bright and colorful, and the music is eerily soothing.

The game has plenty of content with multiple themed worlds and tons of levels; their are also options to connect to Gamecenter or Facebook. Being that I have a mild OCD issue, I tended to master each level with three stars before moving on, but more curious players can access new themes early on by earning just enough stars. Overall, Puzzle Sphere is an entertaining app with a sizable portion of content and a challenging but rewarding difficulty curve. Players seeking out an action puzzle game should find the whole experience quite satisfying.

Ice Tales Revives Retro Gaming

If there was one thing that made retro gaming great, it was the simplistic game designs.  Never was the player forced to learn different key combinations or gestural controls to play a game, it was just easy and straightforward to understand.  While this may not seem like a big deal to some, the newly released Ice Tales is a return to form that is very welcome in my eyes.

Embracing the day when you didn’t need a Ph.D in physics to solve a puzzle, the game combines streamlined mechanics with an amusing eight bit soundtrack to create this generation’s version of retro goodness.  What is old is new again, and this game is here to prove it.

On top of everything else, if you become a fan of the game on facebook, you can get the opportunity to win one of five hundred free copies of the game.  If that isn’t a good reason to support a title, then I don’t know what is.

TonalVerse Review

TonalVerse Review

By
Gianna LaPin on June 2nd, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: ATTRACTIVE BUT FORGETTABLE
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

TonalVerse is a simple little sound toy designed to be a relaxing sound oasis in your hectic day.

Developer: CellaFlora Design
Price: $0.99
Version: 2.2

App Reviewed on: iPod Touch 4g
iPhone Integration Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 2.75 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.67 out of 5 stars

Everyone needs a little bit of Zen in the middle of a hectic day. Some people comb sand gardens. Others, who find sand all over their office desk somewhat messy and more of a stress generator than a stress reliever, may find digital tone generators more to their liking. If that’s your cup of tea, TonalVerse could fit the bill. Freshly updated, it now features a new ambient background track and improved sound quality.

TonalVerse's languidly unhurried splash intro urges viewers to "be still, breathe” – a small reminder to slow down and focus on the present. It also suggests that users don headphones for the best experience. As the initial screen fades, users are presented with several colored “planets” or orbs, drifting lazily across the screen. Touch the screen, and the gesture produces more of the planets, each assigned it’s own random tone. Collisions between planets create harmonious chords, and the sound pattern is echoed gently in the ambient background track. This produces a neat looping effect, layering each tone pattern generated on top of the one that is currently playing.

Depending on the settings selected in the bottom right of the screen (toggle walls, toggle gravity, or clear the screen), the planets will drift off the screen, or ricochet off the walls and each other. (Note: if the meaning behind the three color circles on the bottom right of the screen is unclear, tap the “information” icon in the bottom left, and all will be revealed. This is also where the “off” switch is for the background music.)

TonalVerse is visually appealing and amusing for a short time, but it’s easy to get tired of. My two-year-old enjoyed filling the screen up with as many dots as she could, but even her attention only lasted for about five minutes. This is a good app for mindless sound doodling, perhaps, or a little bit of meditative musing, but functionality is somewhat lacking. Like other similar apps, it lacks the ability to record the sounds it generates. It doesn’t have the potential to be used as an ambient sound generator, since the planets drift away and aren’t replaced by more without user interaction. Still, for the price, it’s one of the nicer-sounding sound toys on the market, especially with the recent update.

Make The World A Little Cleaner With iVac

When one thinks about vacuum cleaners, I would be willing to go out on a limb and conjecture that games are the furthest thing from your imagination.  Vacuum manufacturer Electrolux is aiming to change all of that by introducing their new social marketing tool, interactive battle of the sexes and game, iVac.

Tabulating totals of men and women across the globe, this intriguing new game will pit the tops scores against each other, in order to find which sex is the superior cleaner.  Players will also have the option to chose from a wide variety of different Electrolux branded vacuums, in order to crowned the top sucker in the world.

Using a free game to expand the exposure of a specific brand of product is an interesting new idea that could prove to be an innovative new way to approach marketing.  Here is to hoping that a Swiffer branded dusting game is in production, because we all know that is where the big bucks are at…

Sudoku Ninja Review

Sudoku Ninja Review

By
Jennifer Allen on June 2nd, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: SIMPLE
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Sudoku Ninja is a perfectly functional sudoku game but could do with something more than quirky looks to stand out from the crowd.

Developer: Socially Conscious Software
Price: $0.99
Version Reviewed: 1.2
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 4

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.63 out of 5 stars

Combining Sudoku with ninjas isn’t necessarily the most obvious choice of genre merges. Ultimately the ninja motif doesn’t actually add much to the game either. The ninja references are mostly aesthetic rather than game changing. It does still mean that Sudoku Ninja is a reasonable enough Sudoku title if a little limited features wise.

The Sudoku element of Sudoku Ninja is much the same as countless other Sudoku titles. Players are provided with a pretty clear board to study and new difficulty levels are unlocked once three games are completed in each mode. The ninja element comes in the form of backgrounds and the fact that players ‘throw’ shurikens rather than numbers but in terms of controls, this doesn’t change anything.

The standard features are there such as the ability to pencil in numbers if the player isn’t certain of the correct answer. There’s a hint button to help player along the way too. Controls throughout are accurate and responsive. Scoring is based upon how long it takes a player to make each move, and how long it takes to solve the overall puzzle so it makes for an appropriate scoring system. The GameCenter achievements are also very fitting and provide a good basis for competition.

Everything is just right with Sudoku Ninja really. The only flaw is that it doesn’t hugely stand out. Everything is wholly functional right down to there only being 3 different difficulty modes, each offering a gradually more challenging experience. While players can at least change the tile theme, it’d be nice if some sort of twist was added to the Sudoku concept.

In Sudoku Ninja, it all just works but nothing stands out as amazing. Sudoku fans will enjoy it nonetheless and it’s certainly just what they could need, but others won’t see any need to have this in their collection.
