Computerworld reviewer Michael deAgonia calls the new 27-inch iMac "a thoroughly modern all-in-one computer, with a sharp, bright screen that's perfect for editing movies, organizing/editing photos, watching streaming video or making your own presentations." Citing its minimalist design, enhanced performance from Sandy Bridge processors and AMD graphics chips, and the "very important addition" of Thunderbolt data transfer capabilities, deAgonia concludes: "Apple has delivered a solid update to what was already a popular and successful line."

Assistive Technology on iOS

Until the release of the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, users with physical, sensory, or cognitive disabilities relied on either dedicated devices or arcane, varying-quality software on PCs or Macs to get the support they needed to go about their daily lives in school, at work, or at home. Devices such as a Dynavox or even the popular Tango (developed by members of the XBox team) cost in the thousands of dollars and require intense training and practice to modify for individual users. Screen reading software for the blind, such as JAWS for Windows standard edition, can cost close to $1000 per license.

It’s small wonder that students and individuals with disabilities relied on special education and other social services systems to provide funding for them to receive such software and hardware, with long wait lists the norm rather than the exception. School staff and families struggle to learn the devices and software, only to find them updated and changing with every new release.

With iOS, users with disabilities and the people that support them now have single device that can replace many of the forms and functions of dedicated devices, much less expensively and with less of a learning curve. With the standard user interface standardized hardware of iOS devices, developers can create assistive technology solutions faster and with less expense, allowing apps them to be customized to individuals with disabilities with less training needed.

The accessibility features built right into iOS are a boon to users with visual disabilities, allowing oft-neglected consumers the chance to participate in current, cutting edge technology right out of the box. VoiceOver puts device, preference and app screen navigation in the hands of folks with vision impairments, and is baked right into the OS itself. Not all apps take advantage of the VoiceOver system, but many do, like Apple’s own iBooks e-book app.

Users who need a communication device now have an incredibly less expensive alternative – an iPad and ProLoQuo2Go, an app that’s exorbitant by app store standards, but dirt cheep when compared to similar dedicated devices, like the above mentioned Tango and Dynavox. Proloquo2Go provides users a full featured communication system with over 7000 symbol/word pair items, solid text-to-speech functionality, and an extremely intuitive system for creating personalized communication boards on the iPad itself. Priced at well under $200, Proloquo2Go puts high-end augmentative communication devices within the reach of many more families and individuals than ever before, considering that a Dynavox with similar features costs well into the $6,500 range.

Speech recognition is another tool that was originally developed for the disability community and has since made many of our lives that much easier. Dragon Dictation is the iOS incarnation of the best of class speech recognition technology out there, and comes in at the cost of FREE. Users simply speak the words they want to write, and Dragon Dictation does the rest, allowing users to send the resulting text via email, SMS, or copy to the device clipboard for other use. For users with issues in small motor skill use, or shaky hands, this app (along with a host of others) is a must have app.

That any developer can create an app with as wide or as narrow an appeal as is needed, and then get that app to people who will use it, has created a whole new era for people with disabilities as well as those of us who do not have them, yet. Bringing people who have been traditionally left behind in our culture along with us into the new era of user-centric technology not only benefits the individual users of such tech, but our society as a whole. This lets us learn to see users with disabilities as people first, disabilities second.

FlickAddress – Manage Contacts Review

By
Rob Rich on July 1st, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: COST-PROHIBITIVE
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

FlickAddress is a handy app that makes organizing contacts simple and effective, but the larger-than-average price might discourage some users.

Developer: Fenrir Inc.
Price: $1.99
Version: 1.0.4
App Reviewed on: iPhone 3GS
iPhone Integration Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Organizing. Some people love to do it, some love it so much they’re given regular doses of medication and everyone else could stand to do it more often. Thankfully most of the apps included on any given iOS device take care of these things automatically, but sometimes they’re a little too simple. Thus, apps like FlickAddress – Manage Contacts are born.

FlickAddress is essentially an update to the default Contacts app: it looks pretty much the same (save some color-coding), it imports existing contacts automatically and it allows new ones to be added. What sets it apart is the way it allows users to color-code their custom categories and flip through each group with the flick of a finger. Flick. FlickAddress. Get it?

Not only is it easy to use, FlickAddress is also incredibly easy to figure out and set up for the first time. Categories can be added with a tap or two and contacts can be dragged into each one (or multiples) from the main group. The only way it could be easier would be for the app to anticipate the user’s needs or plug directly into their brain. We can probably expect that in an iOS 6 update.

The only caveat to it all is the price. In the grand scheme of things two dollars is hardly breaking the bank, but iOS users have gotten used to certain price points over the years. Namely one dollar or free. Asking double the expected price for what is essentially a slightly more intuitive version of the default Contacts app might scare off a few potential customers. Personally I think it’s a pittance for such a useful virtual Rolodex, but unless someone has a bunch of phone numbers to sift through they might view the cost as a deterrent. It shouldn’t be, but people will always be people.

Anyone looking for an easy way to sort their contact list can put an end to their search with this fluid, functional and very user-friendly app. As long as price isn’t an issue, or potential purchasers are being realistic with their expectations, FlickAddress will fill that disorganized void quite nicely.

Street Fighter IV Volt Review

By
Carter Dotson on July 1st, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: STATIC SHOCK
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Street Fighter IV Volt is a new version of Capcom’s latest entry in the legendary Street Fighter IV franchise, featuring 3 new characters and online play.

Developer: Capcom
Price: $6.99
Version Reviewed: 1.00.00
Device Reviewed On: iPod touch 4

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.88 out of 5 stars

Capcom has released a new version of Street Fighter IV on to the App Store with new characters and a killer new feature: online multiplayer. The core game is the same as the previous Street Fighter IV: the gameplay is identical to the previous iOS version, as are the controls and graphics, so consult our review of the original for details on the game itself, though it remains possibly the best example of how to do a fighting game on a touchscreen. The meat of Volt is the new online multiplayer through Game Center. Online multiplayer offers two modes: Ranked and Friendly. Ranked puts players against a random opponent, with the ability to collect Battle Points with each win in order to improve their ranking. Friendly mode offers the ability to either play against random opponents, or to invite a Game Center friend to fight.

The online multiplayer works well when the connection is good; lag does occasionally flare up, as is the case when dealing with wireless connections, both wi-fi and over 3G. Otherwise, it works the same as local wireless multiplayer, and fighting Game Center friends is quite fun, especially when getting to match up the best characters against each other. I always like seeing how my Blanka stacks up against my friends, and against strangers on the internet.

The biggest problem with Street Fighter IV Volt and its online multiplayer is when push notifications come in. While this problem will be rendered moot once iOS 5 and its banner notifications come in to play, right now it’s a major annoyance. See, whenever a notification of any kind pops up, any online match disconnects. Not only is this annoying because it makes finishing any match a challenge for the ages, especially for people who get a lot of social media notifications or for those who play social games that provide notifications. Turning off all notifications entirely when playing this game isn’t an option either because Game Center requires that notifications be on in order to send invites. This is also something that could very easily be abused by players looking to use unscrupulous tactics to keep their record glistening. A better option would be if the game just kept going in the background; it would be a disadvantage, but it would be far better than the current solution of disconnecting.

Really, I’m curious as to why this couldn’t have just been an update to the already-existing Street Fighter IV. Capcom has done a great job with updating that game with new content; was now really the time to splinter off into a new app? Between the continued concerns of slower gameplay compared to the console versions, and lack of any kind of iPad support (even in a separate app), Volt addresses none of these issues, and the character lineup is still about half that of Super Street Fighter IV, which this game takes content from.

For fighting game fans who haven’t played the original Street Fighter IV on iOS, this is the version to get. Fans of the original version who crave online play will want to jump on this quickly, as the price will creep up to $6.99, increasing by $1.00 each day. If online play is not important, then there’s not much else new here to justify upgrading.

Juice Belts Review

By
Bobby Gooding on July 1st, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: PHYSICS-BASED PERFECTION
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

A fruity, physics-based puzzler that everybody should take a look at.

Developer: Ben Taylor
Price: $0.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 3GS

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Overall Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars

If any body’s going to make fruit juice in a large capacity, conveyor belts are likely to be a key part of the production line. And Juice Belts is a neat little physics-based puzzler from Ben Taylor which puts the player in control of those conveyor belts, building them up to help convey fruit from box to juicer.

It all starts off rather simple. A number of motors and wheels will appear on screen, with the player drawing on the belt in the right position to ensure no fruit goes to waste. Tapping the box of fruit sets the whole process in motion, with a score awarded at the end that’s dependent on how much fruit made it to be juice, and how successfully that came about. Its quite saddening, actually, those little anthropomorphic fruits are just so cute!

Although the first of the game’s 80 levels are rather straight forward, layers of complication are soon added into the mix. Motors that change direction, fans that blow fruit flying, cogs that can power other belts or adjust directions and zaps of electricity that turn fruit into  tiny fruity chunks are just a portion of the things seen throughout. This difficulty curve is very well implemented. Just when I thought I had the art of conveyor belts mastered, something new is introduced to make me rethink my ways. For example, rotten fruit shows up, and you really don’t want that in fruit juice that’s meant for public consumption.

The game then opens up even more and gives the freedom to place motors, cogs and other items anywhere on the screen. It’s time to really start thinking — this kind of freedom is almost too much for me, often finding myself racking my brains only to fail time and time again. Which is where another handy feature comes in, the hint button, thanks for that!

I simply cannot give Juice Belts enough credit for the way it throws new things at the player. So much thought and effort has gone into this, and it shines through. If I was held at gunpoint and told to find something wrong with this game, I’m afraid this would probably be my last review here on 148Apps. I guess the closest I could come to a problem is that I found it awfully hard to get my head around all the spinning wheels and multi-directional motors at times. But the aforementioned hint button completely alleviates this.

Everybody that plays games on their iPhone should be heading to the App Store and grabbing this game. And, everybody that develops games for the iPhone should be looking at Juice Belts for a masterclass in difficulty progression. I just hope that there’s more levels to come in the future. I want more. I need more.
