Galaga 30th Anniversary Collection Review

By
Carter Dotson on June 10th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: INTERGALACTIC
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Galaga 30th Anniversary Collection contains 4 enhanced versions of classic games in the Galaga series.

Developer: Namco Mobile
Price: Free with In-App Purchases
Version Reviewed: 1.0.0
Device Reviewed On: iPod touch 4G

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Galaga 30th Anniversary Collection starts off with an appreciation for irony; there are 4 games in this package total, but the one game that is free is Galaxian, the Space Invaders-inspired shooter. Next up is the eponymous Galaga, which added moving enemy formations, Challenging Stages, and the ability to a sacrifice a ship in order to recapture it to get double firing. Gaplus brings the ability to move in a two-dimensional space, along with the ability to capture enemy ships. Galaga ’88 includes more enemy formations and a dimensional travel element. Each game has been enhanced with similar “G 30th” elements. These include enhanced graphics; a new auto-fire ability by holding down on the screen (though bullets take time to recharge); as well, there are Galaga Points that can be earned and used toward consumable powerups and screen backgrounds. Point values have been completely changed; the scores on the first level of many games may be higher than my high scores in the normal versions of those games, ever.

Galaga 30th Anniversary Collection’s best element is that Namco finally figured out how to make these games control well on iOS. There is a 1:1 slider with a mild offset on the bottom, and tapping on the screen fires. It’s a far superior controls scheme to other Galaga releases on iOS by far. The “G 30th” elements bring nice new twists to the familiar games, and introduce Gaplus and Galaga ’88 to people who might not have ever gotten to play them. Plus, the app does come with Galaxian for free.

The big problem with the collection as a whole is that the “30th G” elements all make the games feel very similar. All the games now have the autofire option and the similar enhanced graphical effects, which just tends to drown out the often subtle gameplay differences between them. It feels hard to justify buying all 3 extra games of my own volition, having gotten to play all 3 for this review. While Galaga offers the most nostalgic value, and Gaplus has its 2-dimensional movement, Galaga 88 is the deepest of the 4 games, and most worth a $2.99 in-app purchase, though all 3 extra games can be downloaded for $7.99.

Galaga 30th Anniversary Collection is worth a download for the free Galaxian “G 30th” edition alone, though the value of buying all 3 extra games is debatable. The classic games do get a nice new twist on them for those otherwise familiar with the games. Fans of retro gamers should check this one out.

Robotek HD:
Humanity has fallen and robots now rule the world. Robotek HD allows players to destroy their enemies with lasers, fry them with electricity, or just deploy an army of robots to fend off the enemy. Robot upgrades, 200 levels of sheer tactical terror, and an online hall of fame will keep robot jocks busy for some time. Sadly Neo will not come save the day with his machine fighting badassery.

PapiStep:
PapiStep is a simple game in which players must get Mr. Papi (a little red ball) up as high as they can in the stage. Platforms move left and right, and it is up to the player to time their jumps just right to ascend into the heavens. If Mr. Papi takes a dive, the game is over. It seems so fiendishly simple!

Shape Shift:
Shape Shift is a colorful puzzle game in which gamers must swap tiles of the same shape to match colors and clear the board. Classic mode will challenge players by forcing them to clear endless stages of bombs, meanwhile zen mode offers a more relaxed setting to just chill out and solve puzzles. The game is familiar and challenging all at the same time.

Techno Kitten Adventure:
Grab some headphones and prepare to do some head banging as this game is all about the music. Players will guide a cat, imagine that, through a gorgeously colorful world in hopes to fulfill the those aspirations of being king kitty. Obstacles will hinder this great flight, but hey, the audio is sure to keep players coming back for more!

World Cup Table Tennis – The Addictive Classic Game in 3D:
Anyone who wants to be a master of the paddle, sensei of the backspin, or just enjoys a rousing game of table tennis, this is the game for you. This game provides players a bountiful amount to do, and that starts with a career mode in which players can rise from a no-name ball smacker to a world renowned superstar. Tournament mode allows gamers to fight for their favorite country in a bracket style battle, and arcade mode will put a new spin on the classic game. Unlockables round out the package, thus giving fans plenty to do over their lunch breaks. It is hard to believe this is a free game!

Barcode reading is really rather useful. In the case of Barcode Reader and Barcode Reader Pro, it enables users to find the lowest price for an item within the US simply by taking a photo of the relevant barcode.

Barcode Reader has also now become the first and only barcode scanning app that works with the iPad 2 as well as all other iOS devices.

The app enables users to search through a whole wealth of places in the quest to find the best price. It searches eBay, Amazon, Target, Google Product Search, Walmart.com and many others offering a comprehensive price comparison service.

There’s also a built-in browser to help users read more about a product and it’s possible to use the current location to find prices in nearby stores.

All in all, Barcode Reader could be a great way of saving money for the savvy shopper.

It’s available now in free and paid ($0.99) forms and as previously mentioned, it’s currently the only barcode scanning app out there for the iPad 2.

Match Panic Review

By
Carter Dotson on June 10th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: FRANTIC
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Match Panic is a puzzle game that involves rapidly matching pieces on the correct side of the screen.

Developer: Chaotic Box
Price: $0.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPod touch 4G

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Some games are hard to describe; Match Panic from one man development studio Chaotic Box (who made the sadly underappreciated Silverfish) is not one of those games. Animals come down the line one by one, and the player must tap the side of the screen the animal is on, either left or right. That’s the gameplay. There are two key hooks to the game, though First, the game is fast-paced, rewarding players for quickly making match combos. Secondly, the game gets a lot harder as multiple shapes are introduced per side, and the match line starts to get increasingly complex.

Match Panic doesn’t sound very difficult, but once 3 or 4 shapes per side are introduced, the game becomes a mental challenge to try and figure out which is the correct input; and with the time limit and time penalty for a wrong input bearing down, it can become quite intense when trying to make those last few matches before the clock hits zero. The game comes with great pixel art of all the shapes, with Retina Display support, and gameplay that never chugs at all on modern devices. There’s also Game Center leaderboards and achievements to top it off, with more than just high score leaderboards; there are also leaderboards tracking longest streak and other stats.

The visual design can be challenging to keep up with, especially once animals of similar colors start getting unlocked; it is significantly easier to tell the panda and red squid apart than it is to tell the frog and cactus apart. Sometimes getting a more logically-arranged set of shapes is the key to higher scores, though skill is still a key element.

Match Panic is simple yet addictive fun that the kids can easily pick up and enjoy, but is challenging and addictive enough that adults shouldn’t pass up on the game, even if the icon for the game is a panda with a frog on its head.

Personalized Music Experience For The iPad With Groove

Coming soon to the iPad is Groove, an app that’s all about offering an unique music experience. It’s an app that’s already available for the iPhone and iPod Touch with its main features being able to study users’ listening habits and then provide them new and interesting music that they might enjoy.

The app sets out to be the user’s own personal DJ with one single tap offering up a mix of songs that go well together as well as the ability to listen to instant mixes of their favorite songs. It’s been quite a hit for the iPhone and understandably so. Who could resist discovering new music in such an attractive and personalized manner? It seems to be much more effective than the Genius button too.

The iPad version of Groove is setting out to provide an even better experience with a complete redesign to ensure that the app looks great on the larger screen space.

Groove for the iPad is currently being finalized so expect it to be released soon. Why not check out the iPhone/iPod Touch version in the mean time?

Ducati Challenge Review

By
Bobby Gooding on June 10th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: BEST IN CLASS
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Any bikers out there? Ducati Challenge offers up a top-class motorcycle racer that can be played by all.

Developer: Digital Tales
Price: $3.99
Version Reviewed: 1.1
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 3GS

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
Overall Rating: 4.19 out of 5 stars

As a keen virtual racing driver, there’s more than a few racing games installed on my iPhone — some involve racing motorcycles, but I’ve found that the best on the platform often seem to be the more arcade-style titles. Those that favour simple mechanics and colourful, cartoon-like art syles, for example. Here, however, we have Ducati Challenge, which looks to offer more of a simulation-based experience to fans of the genre.

My first concern while installing the game was its name. With the Ducati brand being there I was concerned this was going to be another of those rather lacklustre and quickly churned out, ‘brand-based promotional games,’ which would have been a big issue when considering the $3.99 price tag. However, my fears were soon put to rest when I loaded up the game and started to play. If anything it was quite nice to see a bunch of motorcycles from this well-revered company, especially seeing as it means we get plenty of ‘biker-centric’ details on each of those featured.

On to the gameplay, though, which is also very well done and manages to cater yo just about everybody. As with most racing games on iOS, we see on-screen buttons for acceleration and braking, with use of the accelerometer’s tilt-controls being implemented when turning. The bike hanling feels great, although the high sensitivity does take a little adjusting to — and the tilting motions feel much more natural than in car-based racers, simply due to the way these high powered machines require the rider to lean into corners. It feels very natural. There’s also the option to to enable braking assists for those looking for less of a challenge, meaning the player can focus solely on pointing the motorcycle in the right direction.

There’s three game modes in all, Championship, Quick Challenge and Multiplayer. All of which are fairly self-explanitory. Quick challenge permits a single race with a bike and track of the player’s choosing, while multiplayer allows one to compete with up to four opponents over WiFi. The downside, however, is that there’s only local multiplayer available — so experiencing this at its fullest will require four friends to own the game and be connected to the same network, which is a huge shame and an unlikely occurance also. Championship mode is the real meaty part, though, allowing players to take part in a series of set races in an attempt at being crowned champion. It’s also where new tracks and bikes are unlocked for use in quick play, of which there’s a nice amount of content to discover alongside achievements and galleries which allow you to see Ducati’s finest and even save them to the device to be used elsewhere.

There’s one thing that adds something extra to the well-designed gameplay and excellent handling, though, and that’s the visuals. Bikes, riders and surrounding scenery are all presented beautifully. The locations range from desert and mountains to small towns and large cities, all of which look stunning and offer fine details right through to the distant backdrops — something that even console racers can struggle with at times. It’s a shame that that the background music doesn’t live up to graphics, though. In fact, while racing there isn’s any — we do find an option to listen to our iPod libraries, which is always a pleasing feature, but I would’ve liked to have heard some built-tunes that portray the exhiliration of the sport.

With all that said, despite my prejudices about a branded title, this one does pretty much all the right things. I never felt the Ducati name being force-fed to me while playing, and as a whole Ducati Challenge offers up the best simulation-focused motorcycle racer that I’ve played so far on iOS. Any complaints are very minor, although having true online multiplayer would’ve given me more reason to keep playing after finishing the lenghty Championship mode.
