Galaga 30th Anniversary Collection starts off with an appreciation for irony; there are 4 games in this package total, but the one game that is free is Galaxian, the Space Invaders-inspired shooter. Next up is the eponymous Galaga, which added moving enemy formations, Challenging Stages, and the ability to a sacrifice a ship in order to recapture it to get double firing. Gaplus brings the ability to move in a two-dimensional space, along with the ability to capture enemy ships. Galaga ’88 includes more enemy formations and a dimensional travel element. Each game has been enhanced with similar “G 30th” elements. These include enhanced graphics; a new auto-fire ability by holding down on the screen (though bullets take time to recharge); as well, there are Galaga Points that can be earned and used toward consumable powerups and screen backgrounds. Point values have been completely changed; the scores on the first level of many games may be higher than my high scores in the normal versions of those games, ever.
The big problem with the collection as a whole is that the “30th G” elements all make the games feel very similar. All the games now have the autofire option and the similar enhanced graphical effects, which just tends to drown out the often subtle gameplay differences between them. It feels hard to justify buying all 3 extra games of my own volition, having gotten to play all 3 for this review. While Galaga offers the most nostalgic value, and Gaplus has its 2-dimensional movement, Galaga 88 is the deepest of the 4 games, and most worth a $2.99 in-app purchase, though all 3 extra games can be downloaded for $7.99.
Barcode Reader has also now become the first and only barcode scanning app that works with the iPad 2 as well as all other iOS devices.
Some games are hard to describe; Match Panic from one man development studio Chaotic Box (
The visual design can be challenging to keep up with, especially once animals of similar colors start getting unlocked; it is significantly easier to tell the panda and red squid apart than it is to tell the frog and cactus apart. Sometimes getting a more logically-arranged set of shapes is the key to higher scores, though skill is still a key element.
The app sets out to be the user’s own personal DJ with one single tap offering up a mix of songs that go well together as well as the ability to listen to instant mixes of their favorite songs. It’s been quite a hit for the iPhone and understandably so. Who could resist discovering new music in such an attractive and personalized manner? It seems to be much more effective than the Genius button too.
My first concern while installing the game was its name. With the Ducati brand being there I was concerned this was going to be another of those rather lacklustre and quickly churned out, ‘brand-based promotional games,’ which would have been a big issue when considering the $3.99 price tag. However, my fears were soon put to rest when I loaded up the game and started to play. If anything it was quite nice to see a bunch of motorcycles from this well-revered company, especially seeing as it means we get plenty of ‘biker-centric’ details on each of those featured.
There’s one thing that adds something extra to the well-designed gameplay and excellent handling, though, and that’s the visuals. Bikes, riders and surrounding scenery are all presented beautifully. The locations range from desert and mountains to small towns and large cities, all of which look stunning and offer fine details right through to the distant backdrops — something that even console racers can struggle with at times. It’s a shame that that the background music doesn’t live up to graphics, though. In fact, while racing there isn’s any — we do find an option to listen to our iPod libraries, which is always a pleasing feature, but I would’ve liked to have heard some built-tunes that portray the exhiliration of the sport.
