devilish
Devilish is also known as Bad Omen game.

Devilish is a paddle game with a background story. Once upon a time there were a prince and a princess who loved each other. But the evil jealous demon named "Y" turn them both into stone paddles. Suddenly, a blue sphere fell from the sky, becoming the ball which the paddles can now push forwards, overcoming obstacles and defeating demons.
An Omen...
is a sign that signals a future event; many Omens are historically based upon ancient superstitions and cultural folklore.

Some omens are indicative of good fortune, while others are symbolic of impending hardship and doom. Here are a few common omens, their origins, the resulting curses (and cures, if known), that symbolize bad luck and dark days ahead....

Our ancestors began this superstition, because they thought the image in a mirror, contained our actual soul. Thus, a broken mirror, represented the soul being pulled from your body and being trapped in all the shattered pieces.

- The reason the bad luck lasted for seven years, was because the Romans believed that after seven years, the body was physically renewed and the soul could once again return whole.

Cure:
To break the spell of misfortune from a broken mirror, you must wait seven hours, (one for each year of bad luck), before picking up the broken pieces, and bury them outside, in the moonlight.

Apple Announce iOS 5; iClound – Huge New Features

Apple announced a ton of info today at the WWDC keynote. Like that there are now 200 million iOS devices out in the wild. And that there are 425,000 applications available for iOS. Oh yeah, and iOS 5, Lion, and iCloud are coming very soon.

Rather than just go down the feature list, we’re going to post some thoughts on the new features and point you to places you can see full details on the new stuff.

First, we just posted about what is one of the largest features mentioned, that got very little attention. Apple is now firmly in the game console business by allowing iOS 5 games to be displayed, wirelessly from your device to your TV via the Apple TV. It will be huge.

iOS 5 New Features Look Familar…

The biggest new features shown of iOS 5 all looked more than a little familiar. There were many features in the new Camera app that looked like they could have been borrowed from Camera+. There’s a new todo application called Reminders that could be any number of todo apps in the store. The updates to the Message app, now called iMessage, match the features of the Blackberry Messenger app (BBM), that we’re shocked. Even the method for pulling down the notifications list comes straight from Android.

Now to be fair, these other platforms have “borrowed” from iOS as well. So all’s fair I guess. And I’m still looking forward to the new features, they look fantastic. And will be nice to have some of the baked into the OS.

200 New Features in iOS 5
Some of the new features that stick out in my head most include photo editing features, Twitter integration (single sign on built into the OS), greatly improved notifications / widgets available anywhere, great new mail features, PC-free setup, and apparently 200 more.

For a full list of new features, check out the official list at Apple. It’s got a good roundup and includes a lot of screens and details not mentioned in the keynote.

iOS 5 should be available for all devices in beta, for developers today. It will ship to consumers in the fall.

Video!
Apple has posted a slickly produced video highlighting some of the new features of iOS 5. Or, you can watch the recorded version of the keynote right on the Apple site.

iCloud, Too!

Oh yeah, and there’s iCloud. This turned out to be a much greater solution than we were originally expecting to see. Full wireless syncing of your app data, calendar, contacts, email, todos. Even music, photos, and we assume videos (which weren’t mentioned) as well. And even bigger, apps! Download a new app on your iPad and, if you turn the feature on, it will also be downloaded to your iPhone.

Besides data syncing for built-in iOS apps, what this means is that, once fully developed and supported by developers, you’ll be able to sync data between devices for apps as well. Finish a level on Angry Birds on your iPhone at lunch, that level status will be synced to Angry Birds on your iPad when you get home.

There’s a lot more to this than we can cover in this wrap up. Apple has posted a few more details on iCloud on their site.

iCloud will be free for up to 5 GB of data. We assume there will be a way to pay for more storage, but this wasn’t announced.

iTunes in the Cloud

The iCloud music features, labeled iTunes in the Cloud, let you sync you iTunes purchases on up to 10 devices. Apple also made available a paid service, iTunes Match, for $24.99 per year. This service will match songs you have ripped from other sources like CDs, Amazon.com, etc. and enjoy them in iTunes and it’s 18 million downloadable tracks. All upgraded to 256k AAC. Very nice, and a great deal for $24.99 per year.

Summary

There was a ton announced today. An amazing number of new features for iOS, Lion, and iCloud. So many that they are still digesting. I can’t wait to get my hands on these features.

Did Apple Just Backdoor Their Way Into the Game Console Market? Yes.

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. If you are satisfied with your free trial, please sign-up today. Subscriptions without a plan would soon be removed. Thank you!

In one of the smaller announcements today, Apple announced that iOS 5 on the iPad 2 will support a feature called AirPlay mirroring. This feature is something that I’ve been telling people would eventually come to the iOS world and basically backdoor Apple into the console market.

If you aren’t familiar with HDMI mirroring on the iPad, it’s a feature that lets you plug in an cable into a special adapter on your iPad 2 and display your screen on an HDTV. This feature is great for use in classrooms and has even seen some play in games as well with Firemint using this feature to allow 1080p output on your TV from their Real Racing 2 HD via mirroring. But, you are tethered to the TV with a cable.

So, what’s AirPlay mirroring then, you ask? According to Apple, “AirPlay® Mirroring to wirelessly display everything you do on your iPad 2 right on your HDTV through Apple TV®.” To me, that means with an iPad 2, you’ll be able to do that mirroring without a cable. That means anything you see on your iPad 2, you will be able to see on an Apple TV. Let that sink in and then think using that feature for games.

This means that any game you play on your iPad 2, you’ll be able to play on your TV, wirelessly. Yes, wirelessly. You launch Angry Birds on your iPad 2 and the Angry Birds screen will show up on your TV. Boom, instant game console with $0.99 game downloads.

To control the game, you would use the iOS device as the controller. The Apple TV becomes the cheapest console out there at $99 with the largest game library at nearly 100,000 games. Your iPad 2 becomes your controller, albeit a very expensive one. We can assume that this feature will also be available in the next iPhone and iPod touch, once their processors and memory are upgraded and on parity with the iPad 2.

Let’s wrap that all up together, and it means that you can consider the Apple TV to be firmly in the game console market now. This is huge! I can’t stress enough how much of a game changer this is for the gaming world.

Sony, Nintendo, or Microsoft should be worried. They have all been rather slow to adopt downloadable games, now Apple has gone and made it easy and cheap. If Apple does to the console market what they have done to the mobile software market, they should be very worried. The Apple TV, which started out as Steve Jobs hobby, could turn out to be the most popular home game and entertainment console around.

Travel Intelligently with Smart Travelling Guides

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. Travelling internationally can be complicated, and visiting a foreign city without doing some research is probably a bad idea. But why force yourself to do all the work when plenty of travel guides have already done the legwork for you? That’s the idea behind Smart Travelling Guides, which boast that they aim to “make the experience of worldwide travel more rewarding, less mediocre, and easier to navigate.”

Smart Travelling Guides provide recommendations for food, culture, nightlife, hotels, and shops. Trumpeting that it can find the “best places in town,” the app displays pictures of the place in question, an upbeat description, and finally provides a map. With more than 5,000 hand-picked recommendations, Smart Travelling Guides claims to provide a unique database of great experiences, from spectacular cups of coffee and delicious meals to luxurious hotels.

For the first seven days, the app permits access to all cities at no charge; afterwards, however, each city’s “guide” must be purchased. The app currently supports the following cities:

Amsterdam, Antwerp, Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, Budapest, Dublin, Florence, Hamburg, Istanbul, Copenhagen, Lisbon, London, Madrid, Marseille, Miami, Milan, Munich, Naples, New York, Nice, Palma, Paris, Prague, Rome, Salzburg, San Francisco, Stockholm, Valencia, Venice, Vienna, and Zürich.

The app’s database also provides information on how other users have rated a place. Making use of the iPhone’s hardware, the app can find places based on your current location. The travel guides also stay up-to-date thanks to online synchronization with Smart Travelling’s online database. (Such updates come at no extra charge.) As another ease-of-use bonus, users can also download content for offline access.

So, Smart Travelling Guides provides a great resource of select restaurants, hotels, shops, and more for travelers looking to take advantage of sightseeing in a new city. Next time you’re in Istanbul or Venice, perhaps Smart Travelling Guides will be of use!

Smart Travelling Guides can be downloaded as a free app, with extra “guides” unlockable via in-app purchase.

Diptic Review

Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: GREAT PHOTO APP
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

This superb app allows users to frame several photos into one stunning photo.

Developer: Peak Systems

Price: $1.99
Version Reviewed: 3.0
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 3GS

iPhone Integration Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4.75 out of 5 stars
Re-use Value Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.58 out of 5 stars

Take the number of great photos in your device’s photo library, multiply that by the number of frame layout options in Diptic, and then multiply that by the number of photos you can fit in each framing option and what do you get? A big number, right? Depending on how much of a shutterbug you are, that number could be quite high. With so many possible creations at your fingertips, it’s easy to spend hours arranging and framing photos to create gorgeous images in this super simple app.

With Diptic, users can take several photos from their photo library and arrange them into one of two dozen predefined layouts. Expandable layouts are available through a $0.99 in app purchase. The default layouts are square layouts and the expandable layouts can be adjusted to any aspect ratio. Each of these layouts is comprised of two to four sections, each of which can be filled with a separate (or the same) photo.

Once a photo is chosen for each section of the layout it can be stretched and rotated to fit just right. From there, Diptic offers several ways in which each photo can be manipulated. The saturation, contrast, and brightness can all be individually adjusted in order to achieve any number of looks. The thickness and color of the borders framing each layout can also be adjusted.

Diptic’s interface is smooth and it’s easy to edit photos and get them looking great. Pinch and zoom controls and sliders make the editing simple, but the lack of number values on the sliders can make it hard to get exactly the same settings on multiple photos. This is hardly an issue though because the sliders work well enough to get fairly subtle results.

Once that perfect image has been created it can be saved to the device’s photo library or shared via email, Facebook, Flickr, or Posterous. Images can also be exported as normal or high-res.

Diptic offers so many options and enough flexibility that users can really let loose creatively and never have to worry about running out of things to try with this great photo app. Still, the app is simple enough that it only takes a few moments to build a beautiful image that’s ready to show off.

Tiny World Review

By
Rob Rich on June 6th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: CUTE
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

With Tiny World, any iPhone/iPad user can create their own Little Prince-inspired planetoids with the push of a button.

Developer: 24/7 World.net
Price: $0.99
Version: 1.0
App Reviewed on: iPhone 3GS
iPhone Integration Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Overall Rating: 4.17 out of 5 stars

It’s impossible not to look at images created with Tiny Planet and fail to draw comparisons to the illustrations in Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s literary classic, The Little Prince (Le Petit Prince). With the right subject and the right framing, all it takes is one press of a bright red, candy-like virtual button and another fantastic mini-world is born. While the app itself is really nothing more than a funky lens filter for the device’s built-in camera, it’s still quite a lot of fun to mess around with.

The interface for Tiny World is as simple and no-frills as most photography apps: there’s a viewfinder, a screen that shows the filtered image in real-time and a giant shutter button. Aside from the faux leather texture and the logo, there’s nothing else to it. Well, that’s not entirely true. By making subtle adjustments to the angle of the device (both side-to-side and front-to-back), the composition can be tweaked to a surprising degree. Which is a good thing, because otherwise the majority of the images taken with this app would have more of a spiraled shell-like appearance rather than a spherical one.

As I’ve mentioned, the app is incredibly easy to use. It’s about as point-and-shoot as any app related to photographic imagery can get. But simplicity isn’t why someone will be using it. The reason anyone will want to play with Tiny World is exactly that: in order to play with it. It’s just plain fun to mess around with it; taking surreal pictures of the neighborhood, various random objects or even pets, as is evidenced in the gallery below. Our cat, Ampersand (yes, that’s really her name), was a very cooperative subject.

The toy-like nature of the app is also its biggest problem. Once the novelty of taking warped photos of things wears off, there’s a good chance Tiny World won’t be getting much use. Sure it’ll get some more love when friends and family who haven’t seen it before are introduced to it for the first time, but unless someone can find a reason to base an entire photo series around the concept it’s not going to get much attention after the first few days.

The brevity of its entertainment value shouldn’t be a deterrent, though. Anyone who enjoys using their Apple camera with a phone attached to it will most likely get a kick out of the funky pictures Tiny World can produce. And really, I don’t consider a dollar all that much for something that will have people crowding around the tiny screen of my iPhone and asking if they can “try it next.”

OscilloScoop Review

By
Gianna LaPin on June 6th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: UNIQUE BUT FRUSTRATING
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Weave and spin your own electronica music with this unique synthesizer app.

Developer: Scott Snibbe Studio, Inc.
Price: $1.99
Version: 1.0
App Reviewed on: iPod Touch 4g
iPhone Integration Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 3.25 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 3.25 out of 5 stars
Overall Rating: 3.58 out of 5 stars

Scott Snibbe Studio’s new music-generation app has an interface that is unlike anything I’ve ever seen and is a little difficult to explain: there are two spinning cylinders, each representing a different melody (on the iPad there are three). Touch one of the cylinders and draw a waveform up or down, which affects the sound being generated. There are four percussion beats that can be activated, and four holding locations to store different waveforms on the upper right. Tempo can be chosen via a slider.

Using this app can be a bit of an exercise in frustration. OscilloScoop does provide a full-screen infographic pointing out various landmarks but actual instruction is scare and somewhat cryptic. I found myself wishing that there were some decent instructions, or maybe a video of an expert using it, to show me the app’s potential and give me a sense of what I was shooting for. The interface is fascinating for a UI junkie like myself — I could totally see a professional DJ using an application like this, mixing and spinning different loops to generate an endlessly shifting stream of music. According to the description in the iTunes App Store, the app designer worked with leading musicians and music technologists including Laurie Anderson and Max Mathews, but as a music-synthesizing novice I was having too much difficulty to enjoy myself.

Like many other music apps I’ve reviewed, this app does not allow you to save the music you generate, which is frustrating. There is also no “undo” feature. After working with it for half an hour I generated some music which I though was halfway decent, but I blew the melody with a wayward swipe of my finger.

The app comes preloaded with several percussion tracks, and users have the option to purchase more in-app, but I didn’t think the preinstalled loops were sufficiently different from each other to be very distinguishable.

OscilloScoop has just as much going for it as it’s got going against it; the interface is fairly simple and intuitive, but it doesn’t provide nearly enough features to be of much use to anyone. Maybe enough people will buy add-on beats through the in-app purchase option to fund a future enhancement or two in the future.
