Is it Weiner's Weiner or Does Weiner have a Weiner?

I had decided not to even write anything about this since Anthony Weiner is so irrelevant to anything, but then on the other hand, he has been a white house and Obama tool and mouthpiece, especially in attacking Glenn Beck, and Glenn Beck's audience of which I am one as being without shoes and teeth, [...]

World Health Organization: Cell Phone use can increase possible cancer risk

mickeypapillon | May 31, 2011 at 11:01 am | Categories: News | URL: http://wp.me/pxEKP-2XF

CNN reported Tuesday that according to the World Health Organization, cell phones can possibly cause cancer.  The agency now lists mobile phone use in the same "carcinogenic hazard" category as lead, engine exhaust and chloroform, though they say no adverse health effects have been established.

Teams of scientists from around the world made the decision after reviewing studies, and found enough evidence to categorize personal exposure as "possibly carcinogenic to humans."  The type of radiation from cell phones is non-ionizing, meaning its like a very low-powered microwave oven.

According to Keith Black from Cedars-Sinai in LA:

"The biggest problem we have is that we know most environmental factors take several decades of exposure before we really see the consequences.  What microwave radiation does in most simplistic terms is similar to what happens to food in microwaves, essentially cooking the brain. So in addition to leading to a development of cancer and tumors, there could be a whole host of other effects like cognitive memory function, since the memory temporal lobes are where we hold our cell phones."

Manufacturers currently warn consumers to keep their device away from their body.  Apple says: "When using iPhone near your body for voice calls or for wireless data transmission over a cellular network, keep iPhone at least 15 mm (5/8 inch) away from the body."  RIM advises users to: "keep the BlackBerry device at least 0.98 in. (25 mm) from your body when the BlackBerry device is transmitting."

London Mayor to Whack President Obama’s Motorcade with the Congestion Charge

London Mayor to Whack President Obama's Motorcade with the Congestion Charge: " Unless you've been living under a rock for the past week or so, you'd have seen that hi-larious [sic] video of one of the Barack-mobiles getting stuck on a ramp outside the U.S. Embassy in Ireland. The U.S. President's eight ton, "Beasts" are monsters of cars, built to withstand bullets, bombs and probably reporters' shoes (yes, I went there).

In a cute footnote to this story, notorious car-hater environmentally-conscious London Mayor Boris Johnson is considering levying a congestion charge on each car in President Obama's motorcade, the cost of which would be £10 (US$16) per vehicle. A spokeswoman has stated that they will not be paying the charges if billed.

On the heels of its official unveiling, Mercedes-Benz has dropped a video of the 2012 SLS AMG Roadster in its natural habitat. Let the ogling begin. If you were floored by the still shots of the latest confection from AMG, the video will leave you gibbering lump. Though the Roadster loses the coupe's iconic Gullwing doors, it keeps its performance credentials and only gains a scant 88 pounds. Power doesn't budge, but somehow Mercedes claims the topless SLS is quicker than the coupe to 60 by one hundredth of a second. That isn't much, but faster is faster. The UK-market Hyundai i30 - Click above to enlarge
It's official: five million Hyundai vehicles have been paired with paying customers in Europe since 1977. It began with a Hyundai Pony sent home with a UK buyer, and the latest milestone was achieved with the sale of an i30 (pictured). Although it works out to roughly 147,000 cars per year over those 34 years, the Korean firm didn't hit the million-sales mark until 1996. The second million came in 2001, the third million in 2005, and it's been another million every three years since.
More than half of those sales are accounted for by just five European countries, with Germany in the lead at 714,260 units. There's a press release after the jump with all the info.

Report: Jaguar crossover to ride on new chassis, get aluminum clothing: "

Jaguar grille and emblem Conventional wisdom - ignoring for a moment that conventional wisdom would seemingly dictate that such a vehicle wouldn't exist at all - tells us that Jaguar cannot afford to develop a brand new platform for a crossover vehicle. And why would they? After all, corporate kissing cousin Land Rover specializes in utility vehicles and just introduced its first CUV, the Evoque. Just base the Jag on the Rover... open and shut, right? According to a report from Top Gear in the UK, wrong. The blokes from across the pond say that Jaguar is hard at work on a new aluminum-intensive platform for a planned two-seat roadster and coupe, which will be joined shortly thereafter by a small premium hatchback. We concur that all those are likely. But, breaking from previous rumors, TG seems to think that Jaguar will use that same rear-wheel-drive architecture for its crossover. If true, expect an all-aluminum body (as seen on the current XK and XJ) for light weight and a range of gasoline and, at least in Europe, diesel engines. All-wheel drive would undoubtedly be an option, but don't expect even a modicum of off-road intent. So, will it happen? Our Magic 8 Ball is a bit murky...

It’s Coming from Down Under: Joss Development’s JP1 Supercar

It's Coming from Down Under: Joss Development's JP1 Supercar: " It's been a very long time in the making, but it looks like Melbourne-based JOSS Developments is nearing the production phase of its V8-powered supercar model, internally codenamed JP1. The company today announced that it will preview the future production version of the JP1 at the forthcoming Australian International Motor Show (AIMS), which takes place this year at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Center from July 1 to 10.

The Australian startup said it will showcase an evaluation prototype as well as a wind tunnel model of the production JP1 and select componentry from its technical partners. This will be the second time that JOSS Developments will be exhibiting the vehicle to the public after the appearance of an early prototype model in Melbourne in 2004.

Mazda Not Working on RX-9, Odds of a New RX-7 Are Slim But Real

Mazda Not Working on RX-9, Odds of a New RX-7 Are Slim But Real: "

2009 Mazda RX-8 Grand Touring

Contrary to recent rumors claiming that Mazda is considering building a hybrid RX-9 sports car, which would marry a gasoline-fueled rotary engine to an electric-drive system borrowed from Toyota, we can confirm that the company has no plans for such a vehicle. In fact, the very future of the rotary engine at Mazda is in jeopardy.

Production of the Mazda RX-8 is drawing to a close, and given the vehicle's tiny sales volume—just 291 were sold in the U.S. from January to April of this year—we're told by a company insider that there wasn't even a business case for a special "end-of-the-road" edition with unique paint and badging. With the RX-8′s passing, Mazda won't have a vehicle in which to install its current 1.3-liter rotary screamer. (It's worth noting that new European emissions standards could have been the nail in the coffin for Mazda's rotary, too, but this is a chicken-and-egg debate.)

We have learned, however, that there is a quiet movement within Mazda to build an RX-7 as a replacement. Such a vehicle would borrow (and, most likely, enlarge) the platform from the next-generation Miata, which should hit the market in a bit less than two years. This project hasn't received any official green light, though, and we don't know whether it's merely on the drawing board or has moved on to skunkworks production.

The passing of the RX-8 is sad, as the vehicle's chassis and steering are among the best in the business, and we love the distinctiveness of the rotary engine. But it's hard to argue with the economics of the car business, and a small company like Mazda can hardly afford to build two sports cars on unique platforms in such small numbers. Still, we hope to be able to bring you official confirmation at some point of an MX-5-based RX-7—that day is just not today.

Volvo Testing KERS Kinetic Energy Recovery Flywheels for Its Lineup

Posted: 26 May 2011 01:36 PM PDT

Volvo Testing KERS Kinetic Energy Recovery Flywheels for Its Lineup: "

Volvo seems an unlikely carmaker to explore the use of kinetic-energy recovery flywheels in its pedestrian automobiles, but the traditionally safety-oriented company is indeed working to bring the Formula 1 tech to its cars. Volvo joins Porsche and its GT3 R hybrid racer in the utilization of a kinetic-energy recovery system (KERS) that uses the energy of a flywheel spun to high speed by recovered braking energy to aid a car's engine during acceleration.

In Volvo's system, the flywheel is mechanically coupled and decoupled from the rear axle using a continuously variable transmission. The CVT engages the flywheel as the car slows, spinning it to up to 60,000 rpm, then decouples the flywheel as the car comes to a halt, finally re-coupling the spinning flywheel to the rear wheels when the car accelerates from a stop. Volvo's mechanical, motorless rear-axle-mounted setup is unique from Porsche's approach to KERS, which relies on motor-generators to spin up the flywheel, recover its energy, and transfer that energy back to the car's forward motion. (Read more about the system in the 911 GT3 R hybrid here.) Volvo claims that the flywheel's accelerative boost not only aids fuel economy, but performance as well, with up to 80 additional horsepower available when the flywheel and engine join forces.

Because the flywheel doesn't spin forever—the laws of physics cannot be beat, so it loses rotational inertia over time—the KERS system is most effective in stop-and-go driving, where each stop can spin the flywheel, which can then be used to get the car going again for a brief period of time. Volvo is aware of the situational limits of the KERS system, so it has worked to make the flywheel as efficient as possible. This means that the flywheel is made of carbon fiber, making it lighter—the 7.84-inch diameter flywheel weighs just 13 pounds—and increasing its rotational capacity. The flywheel spins in a vacuum to minimize friction losses. Volvo plans to begin testing its KERS setup in its cars in the second half of 2011, and is confident it can reduce fuel consumption by up to 20% while giving a four-cylinder engine the punch of a six. We just hope an F1-style, driver-operable "boost button" makes the cut, because a Volvo with a go-faster button would make us giddy at the incongruity of it all.

Production of the all-new 2011 Saab 9-4X crossover has started on schedule, despite the company's crippling financial woes. While production of the rest of the Saab lineup at its Trollhattan, Sweden plant has ground to a cash-strapped halt, 9-4Xs are rolling off the assembly lines in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico.

The plant producing the latest Saab is under contract to the Swedes from GM, and with any luck will help jumpstart a recovery. Under its very Swedish skin, the Saab 9-4X packs the same underpinnings as the 2011 Cadillac SRX. The base model, which comes with a 265-hp 2.8-liter V6, starts at $33,380, with the top-whack, turbocharged model ringing the register at $48,010. Ominously for Saab, the 300-hp mill is the same engine Cadillac just pulled from the SRX lineup to deal with reliability issues.

Despite the barrage of concepts presented at the Paris Motor Show, Lotus still has lots of planning ahead as it maps out the future. Five concept vehicles were revealed in 2010:the Elan, Elise, Elite, Esprit and Eterne. We've got an update on two of them. Car and Driver says that the Lotus Esprit should arrive by 2013. The Elan, however, has a murkier future. Forget 2013; it's been speculated that we might not see it until 2016. Blame the Lotus Evora. Orignally, Lotus planned to shut down the Evora so that it could give way to the Elan. Now, Lotus management has decided that the Evora deserves a traditional model cycle. Should the Evora continue into a second generation, it puts the Elan's existence into question. If a second-generation Evora isn't developed, a next-generation car, then new Elan will arrive and fill in the open lineup spot.

BMW Introduces the 328 Hommage, Inspired by the Classic 328, at the Villa d’Este Show

BMW Introduces the 328 Hommage, Inspired by the Classic 328, at the Villa d'Este Show: "

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of its beau ideal 328 sports car, BMW is going full force. As if opening the archives and sending 12 historic examples to the Mille Miglia rally wasn't enough, the company has created the 328 Hommage, a modern interpretation of the 328. Using the company's recent Vision ConnectedDrive concept car as a starting point, the 328 Hommage features modern materials and lightweight design techniques. The original 328 weighed just 1720 pounds, and in its honor the Hommage uses lightweight materials almost obsessively; the structure, bodywork and most of the interior is rendered in exposed and unpainted carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic. The only other visible materials are aluminum and leather in the interior. The concept is powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six engine, bolted to an automatic transmission.

The Hommage thus isn't much of an aesthetic homage—it looks almost nothing like its tiny silver 1930s-vintage inspiration. In comparison with the original artifact, the 328 Hommage is low, angular, and downright mean looking. Mixing styling cues from BMW's upcoming i8 (the front end), Z4 (the flanks), and the newest 6-series (the rear), the designers also threw in several details that hark back to the 328's era.

There are leather straps woven into the bodywork behind the front wheels and on the hood near the base of the windshield, small windscreens in lieu of a formal windshield, and alloy wheels with circular holes and spinner hubcaps that recall the original 328's steel wheels. One of the cooler details is the lighting; the headlights appear to sport black tape crossouts like so many vintage racers do, but in fact the "tape" really consists of blacked-out, criss-crossed indents that separate the lamp into four individual backlit-LED units.

The interior is equally sculpted, and supremely driver-oriented. The interior is separated into two separate pods—one for the driver and one for the "co-driver"— and everything that isn't brown leather or aluminum is carbon fiber. The driver's pod features a sweeping console and a windscreen that is larger than the co-driver's, which actually makes the hood and its powerdome slightly asymmetrical. The only instruments are a tachometer and oil temperature, oil pressure, and water temperature gauges. In front of the co-driver are mounted two iPhones in aluminum cases that look like chronometer watches from the future. The functional and racy interior is rounded out by a kill switch for the vehicle electronics.

The concept is set to debut at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este next week, and we cannot think of a more sensational 75th birthday present.

The wide boulevards, endless expressways,  and three-car garages of the United States are not what you might call prime territory for tiny city cars. Sure, they're big business in Europe, the hatchery that birthed these automotive Peeps, with all major carmakers (including Mercedes-Benz and Audi) looking for a piece of the action. But without the need for space efficiency that guided the development of these runabouts, few Americans seem willing to put up with the resulting trade-offs. Previous efforts largely failed to break Americans out of the small-is-cheap mind-set.  And cars like the quirky-but-joyless Smart Fortwo, and soon the Scion iQ, test the outer limits of American good humor.

According to Auto Express, the decidedly adorable Mini Rocketman Concept from this year's Geneva Motor Show might be headed for production as a new entry-level model within the next few years. If the rumors are to be believed, we could see the new mini Mini on the streets as early as 2014. Auto Express suggests that a production version of the Rocketman could share a lot of its underpinnings with BMW's new i3 city car. Executives were quick to dismiss the notion that a Mini vehicle would be produced under BMW's 'i' division, but that, 'the technology we are developing for the 'i' family of cars will certainly be made available for the rest of the BMW Group.' Makes sense. Of course, normal petrol and diesel powertrains would be offered in the smallest Mini offering, peraps of the three-cylinder turbocharged variety. In any case, we still have a few years before a production Rocketman will see the light of day, so things could change drastically before then.

Remarketing: Conversions Tippers Lutons Dropside

What does adding a tipper, dropside or Luton body do to the value of a light commercial when the time arrives to dispose of it. Steve Banner speaks to some auctions experts to find out Late-registered low-mileage 3.5-tonne tippers are as rare
as a hen's teeth and a lot more valuable because demand for
them is rising countrywide at present, say light commercial auctioneers. Older 3.5-tonne tippers are sought after too, they add, just so long as they have been properly looked after; condition is a key consideration in this demanding sector of the market.
"Tarmac and concrete stuck to the load bed and other signs of severe on-site use definitely affect their desirability," says BCA general manager, commercial vehicles, Duncan Ward.
Not only should tippers be given a vigorous wash and brush-up prior to disposal, the tipping gear should be checked over as well to ensure that it works properly.
"We always get the driver to tip the body by about a foot when the vehicle gets in front of the auction rostrum," Ward says. If it is not tipped, then prospective purchasers are entitled to draw their own conclusions.
Most tipper bodies come with steel floors, alloy sides and an alloy tailboard. However, all-steel bodies, which appear infrequently, are equally desirable so far as second-hand buyers are concerned, says Ward. That is despite the payload penalty they impose.Image
"The current shortage of tippers means that bidders will, within reason, take whatever they can get just so long as the condition is right," he observes. "To put that into context, out of the 1959 light commercials we've got going into sales at present, just 21 are tippers."
Double-cab tippers attract bidders, but interest slumps if
the first owner has removed the rear seat and blacked out the rear side windows to create a semi-secure compartment where tools can be stowed.
"Do that and it can take £500 to £1000 off the second-hand value," says Tim Spencer, regional commercial manager at Manheim Auctions. Used buyers clearly want the extra seating capacity.
"Everybody assumes that double-cab tippers are worth more than single-cabs, but that's not necessarily the case," says Ward. "People only want them if they need to put a gang of men to work."
So how much is a second-hand tipper likely to fetch at auction? "A 2007-registered single-cab Ford Transit tipper will probably go for around £6000," Spencer says.
Buyers tend to favour rear- wheel drive chassis because they feel they offer better traction on muddy sites. People in search of dropside 3.5-tonners take the same view, he says.
Although they are not quite as desirable as tippers, demand for them nationally is strong, and too few of them come onto the market.
"As a consequence a decent late-registered example will easily sell for £5000 to £5500," he observes.

Condition matters

As with tippers, condition matters. "The vehicle has got to be tidy," says Spencer.
The way to make bidders' hands shoot up is to show them an ultra-long extended-frame 3.5-tonner with a double-dropside body, says Ward. "Scaffolders really like them," he adds.
A tail-lift is not necessarily desirable on a dropside so far as used buyers are concerned because the weight reduces the payload capacity they want, he continues. It is well-nigh essential on a Luton-bodied 3.5-tonner though, Ward stresses.
Like used tippers and dropsides, second-hand Lutons are a scarce and much sought-after commodity – "buyers go mad over them,"
he remarks – and greatly preferred to chassis with simple box bodies. "We've only got 23 Lutons available for sale at present,"
he says.
Spencer suggests that one reason why 3.5-tonne Lutons are so popular is that a growing number of 7.5-tonne operators are attempting to switch to 3.5-tonners because they wish to avoid being enmeshed in all the rules and regulations that surround heavier vehicles. Having decided to drop down to 3.5 tonnes, they want the biggest body they can get; and that usually means a Luton.
Used Lutons in sound condition can sell for anywhere from £6000 to £10,000.
While tippers, dropsides and Lutons tend to be the most popular bodies on 3.5-tonne chassis, examples with curtain-sided, car transporter, and beaver-tailed plant bodies all appear from time to time.
Their rarity makes them difficult to price, and the money they realise depends heavily on who is bidding when they appear.
If somebody has an urgent
need for one, then he may be willing to pay top dollar. If that eager individual happens not to
be there on the day, then the price may languish.
Once again, it is condition that matters. Even somebody who desperately requires a curtainsider may hesitate if the curtains are torn and hanging off and the load bed is pitted and scarred.

Vilner Custom Studio Takes on the Smart ForTwo

Vilner Custom Studio Takes on the Smart ForTwo: " You may or may not like Vilner's aesthetic proposals, but you'll have to agree that Bulgarian studio is a very good example of what a company from a relatively small country with no background in its niche can achieve with some hard work and smart yet efficient marketing tactics. You see, instead of focusing on the local market and waiting for someone to discover the firm's products, over the past year or so Vilner has been aggressively promoting every tune it has worked on. We don't know if this strategy has translated into an overseas income, but it has put the company on the map, and that's something worth noting.

In this latest tune, Vilner crafted a bespoke Smart ForTwo for one of its local customers. The Lilliputian two-door model received extensive styling modifications built around a square motive that is visible inside and out. On the outside, the ForTwo gains a colorful wrap that includes a chrome finish at the back and orange wheels, while the interior has been completely reworked featuring new and more luxurious materials throughout. Follow the jump for more pictures as well as a video from the build.

Report: Next-gen Mercedes-Benz S-Class to come in four flavors: "2007 Mercedes-Benz Ocean Drive concept

Ask anyone who knows their cars from their elbows what kind of car a Mercedes-Benz S-Class is and they'll tell you it's a sedan. A big sedan. A big luxury sedan. But that common assumption is about to get blown out of the water. The next-generation S-Class is set to arrive late next year as a 2013 model. And when it does, the sedan will only be the start of it. Reports indicate that the next S will spawn no fewer than four body-styles. First things first: two wheelbase options cover two of those versions, even if the shorter wheelbase isn't offered in North America. But don't worry - the third option isn't a wagon. Nor is it a four-door coupe - the CLS covers that base just fine. But following the integration of the CLK into the E-Class family and the arrival of the new C-Class coupe, the big CL coupe (which was originally a rebadged S coupe in the first place) will be re-integrated into the S-Class. So where does that leave the fourth variant? Convertible. Although Mercedes has toyed with the idea of a CL cabrio for years, it's never offered one (at least not as a production model direct from the factory). And while the Ocean Cruise concept pictured above was a four-door convertible, sources expect the production S Cab to pack two doors like the coupe on which it'll be based. Of course in the current trend of busting segments, there's no telling what the future might bring, but for now it seems Daimler has its eyes fixed squarely on the Bentley Continental GTC.

Rumormill: Aston Martin working on Cygnet EV

Rumormill: Aston Martin working on Cygnet EV: "

Aston Martin Cygnet Here's a bit of news that's sure to acquaint faces with their respective palms all across the motoring world: word on the web is that Aston Martin is planning to produce an all-electric version of the company's new compact, the Cygnet. This, friends, is why people drink in the morning. The vehicle is all but guaranteed to be a reworked version of the Toyota iQ EV, as you probably figured out all on your own. Why would Aston Martin, a company that's built its legacy on the aching chords sung by mighty V8 and V12 engines possibly forsake the altar of internal combustion for a battery pack? The same reason every other manufacturer on the planet is dabbling in electrons - to reduce its corporate average fuel economy and slim down emissions at the same time. Does this mean we can expect some other electrified coupes from Aston Martin wearing more appropriately British bodywork? Don't hold your breath. We can't wait to see what Clarkson has to say about this one.
