Word games are fun and the ideal game to drop into on a daily commute, or simply when there’s five minutes spare in the day. One such word game that fits this description is RhymieStymie.

It’s a free app, backed up with a series of in-app purchases, that offers a form of rhyming challenge. It’s simple to learn: players are given a short clue and they have to come up with a two word rhyming answer that means the same thing. It’s the kind of thing that takes a few seconds to get into the right mindset but it’s not long before ‘criminal crustacean’ easily turns into ‘mobster lobster.’

That’s mostly it. There aren’t any super flashy graphics or annoyed birds getting in the way. It’s simply a fun concept that gets the old gray matter ticking. Sometimes that’s all that’s needed in a fun and wordy puzzle.

Check out the video below for more of an overview.

RobotRiot Review

By

Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: A MILD RIOT
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

RobotRiot is a retro-inspired platformer where players chase after high scores across 12 levels.

Developer: Glowing Eye Games
Price: $0.99
Version Reviewed: 1.1
Device Reviewed On: iPad 1, iPod touch 4

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

RobotRiot is an action-platformer that takes a lot of its inspiration from the early 1990′s. Players raid three ships, taking on enemies and bosses across a dozen levels. Levels are short, but this is not a trial platformer like Commander Pixman or League of Evil. The hardest levels may take several minutes to beat, and have deadly traps and enemies in place as well. The levels also often have side paths with inconviently-placed extra lives and powerups. The player can jump and fire, and minus special weapon powerups that can be found, that’s it. Enemies and boss fights must be taken on with what amounts to a pea shooter that has recoil as well.

This retro-inspired platformer is very detailed, and looks great on either the Retina Display or the iPad. There’s the requisite chiptune soundtrack as well. This is a great blend between having levels with actual substance, that one doesn’t feel rushed to complete as quickly as possible, while keeping them short enough for short-form gaming. Some of the bosses appear to take some influence from classic Sonic the Hedgehog bosses, which is just a nice nostalgic touch. The game is non-linear, allowing for players to play the easy, medium, or hard ships in whichever order they choose. Why would anyone want to start off on the hardest ship? Well…

The game’s setup of either being able to continue with the score at zero, or to submit the high score and reset progress, just seems out of touch with modern times. When I got near the end of the hardest ship, I decided to submit my score instead of continuing, which was a good call…I had the number two score in the world! Still, it seems like it’s silly that this choice has to be made. It also actively discourages people from actually, well, beating the game. The game is universal, but the button placement isn’t very comfortable on the iPad. Also, the jump button should be on the outside, not the inside! That’s just blasphemous!

RobotRiot‘s a bit refreshing when many other platformers are going to the hyper-short route, and the level design that extends out vertically as well as horizontally is well-done as well. It feels a bit stiff at times, but is a solid experience overall.

World of Star:

If video games are any indication of what space is like, well, humanity is in for some pretty rough battles. World of Star is an online sci-fi strategy game where players pick one of three races (human, alien, and spirit), establish a base, and attempt to take out their neighbors. This game comes with over 45 buildings, 30 battle units, 600 quests, and hundreds of players online to duke it out against. It is deadly out in the black, but surely there is someone who can lead the human race to victory.

RaOne:
Players take on the role of G.One in this top-down 3D arcade action game. G.One is tasked with defending the world against the ungodly wrath of a strange creation by the name of Ra.One and his minions. The mission itself is simple: survive the hordes of enemies and bring Ra.One to his knees. Upgrades for weapons and armor will help make this task slightly easier, but it will come down to mad skills to save the world yet again.

Cannon Ball:

Cannons and Pandas, what more needs saying?!? How about enjoying a massive battle in which players will take turns firing cannons at one another in hopes they can successfully lay waste to the opponent’s fortress. Bonuses go to those that claim a perfect victory, or those who narrowly avoid defeat. Invite friends off Game Center and let the battle begin. Loser buys lunch!

Forever Drive:

Like racing and have a bit of a creative streak, then this game is just what the doctor ordered. Start playing by designing some of the most beautiful, winding, and gorgeous race tracks with just a few touches thanks to the streamlined in-game track editor. The creativity does not stop there as car customization is just as important, and therefore plenty of paint and license plate options are available for tweaking. After all of that, hit the unique track and race like no tomorrow while leveling up as the miles pile on, thus unlocking more cars and more options for fun. There are infinite possibilities tucked into this game.

Q Pang:

Q Pang brings plenty of adorable enemies and charming player characters in this shoot-and-kill adventure game. The usual weapons like machine guns and lasers make an appearance but then there are also off the wall battlements like a cake gun. Yeah, a cake gun! All weapons come with a variety of upgrades to aid in the alien slaughter, of which there are 14 varieties to bring down. It maybe quirky and a bit odd, but when was the last time anyone had this much fun blasting evil aliens with tasty cake?!?

Experience Life As A Zombie With The Playforge’s Zombie Life

Zombies are cool. That’s why there are so many games centered around them. Also popular are social games which is precisely why The Playforge’s Zombie Farm has been such a success with over 20 million downloads since its release last year.

The Playforge clearly aren’t keen to sit back, though, and have released a new zombie social gaming title: Zombie Life. This time round, players take the role of a young zombie as they stumble their way through life in the real world. Comedic opportunities are abound thanks to the zombies needing to work in places like Burger Kong or the local grocery store, while staying consistently fresh and safely disguised. It’s certainly an original idea for a freemium based social game and just in time for Halloween.

Check out the gameplay trailer below. Zombie Life manages to make zombies look pretty darn loveable in their quest for normality.

Zombie Life is available now for free with in-app purchases available.

Miner 2049er Review

By
on October 14th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: DIG IN
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

For a game about a miner that doesn’t actually involve any mining, Miner 2049er is all kinds of alright.

Developer: Magmic
Price: Free
Version: 1.0
App Reviewed on: iPhone 3GS

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Playtime Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 2.75 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.56 out of 5 stars

I was born in the early 80′s, and as a result I’ve spent more time with Samus and Luigi than Pitfall Harry. So it should be pretty obvious that the original Miner 2049er wasn’t really in my playlist. But the great thing about retro games is that there are always people willing to port them to modern systems. Well, most of them. I’m still waiting on that Mutant League iOS port…

Miner 2049er is both a straight port and a remake of the 1982 classic. When starting a new game, players choose between the old-school levels or the more modern (in more ways than one) re-imagined stages. Regardless of the choice, it’s then a matter of treading over the entire level while avoiding enemies and grabbing power-ups to reach the next one. I mean that literally; every virtual inch of ground must be walked over in order to change its color/texture and move on.

I imagine that fans of the original had a lot of fun with it, but I don’t have warm fuzzy memories to pull from. Thankfully, there’s a slew of new levels (with more on the way) to mess around with, some of which include new elements like elevators. And these new levels? Lots of fun. The more complex ones can take a little while to complete, too.

Miner 2049er offers up lots of control options, but I had a tough time with most of them. The tilt controls are kind of awkward mostly due to tilting up and down to climb ladders. Plus moving to the side will jump off said ladders, usually resulting in death by impact with the floor. The touch controls aren’t much better as jumping and ladders can be troublesome. The virtual joystick controls are much, much better, but they’re a bit sensitive and still cause the occasional problem with (surprise, surprise) those ladders.

I highly recommend Miner 2049er as both a nostalgic experience and as a just plain fun iOS game. The free content runs out pretty fast (only 4 levels are available), but it’s fun while it lasts. And it’s free and stuff. But I would also recommend paying the dollar to unlock the other 16 levels (for 20 total), because why not? Also fun.
