Perfect Pitch Piano teaches something that I’ve been trying to learn for years: to play the piano by ear. There’s a corny joke in there. Musicians still need their hands to play the instrument, not their ears, but Perfect Pitch Piano does go some way to teaching those interested to play a tune.

Basically, Perfect Pitch Piano plays a melody and then leaves the user to play it back. It’s a subtle teaching tool but one that should work well with practice. In its endeavours, Perfect Pitch Piano teaches users to learn all the fundamental building blocks of music playing such as intervals and timings.

Classic songs can be learnt through the app such as Amazing Grace, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Mary Had a Little Lamb, ideal starting places for beginners.

Those a little more experienced aren’t left out, however, as they can adjust the key and tempo to make things more challenging.

On sale at $1.99, Perfect Pitch Piano is bound to be an ideal tool for those learning to play the piano.

Fahrenheit Weather and Temperature on your Home Screen Review

By
on November 9th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: USEFUL AND CLEAN
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

As winter sets in, everyone needs a good weather app. Fahrenheit Weather and Temperature on your Home Screen takes it to the badge.

Developer: International Travel Weather Calculator
Price: $.99
Version: 1.4
App Reviewed on: iPad 2

iPad Integration Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars

Brrr! Winter has reared it's blizzardy head already once this month as North Easterners know all too well. And, here in Canada we are in for a very long sleigh ride indeed. Checking the weather is hardly limited to cold times, but knowing when there's a snow storm or temperature plunge is a very good reason to get a weather app.

The iPhone comes with one, but the iPad doesn't and Apple’s icon is completely static. It sits there and looks mockingly sunny even when old man winter is throwing hail stones onto windshields and taunting those with frozen toes.

Fahrenheit Weather and Temperature on your Home Screen, which for metric speaking folks (like me) is sold as Celsius too with the same GUI, has an icon with a badge that displays the current temperatue updating in something close to real time.

There is a metric caveat – Apple does not allow badges to display negative numbers, so the standout feature can be a rendered useless in some places, like here in the Great White North for months. But, to help work around that, the app will send notifications when the temperature drops below freezing and of course inside the app all is well.

Speaking of the inside there is there is a lot, but no clutter. The GUI is clean with the option of a light or dark theme and upon launch it presents the current temperature for any location, and a 10-day forecast.

Tapping on a day brings up a host of information beyond the day's highs and lows. The app provides information on precipitation, humidity, UV index, sunrise and sunset, and the "actual" temperature when wind chill factor, "humidex" or other variables factor in and more.

Icons along the bottom of the screen allow users to view cloud patterns, temperature maps, track rain and wind and check satellite imagery. And, for those who like to boast about who has it best, or more often, worst, there is Facebook and twitter integration.

There is really nothing to pick on. As a Canadian, I wish the badges worked when it dipped below freezing since that is where it will stay starting very soon and relentlessly until March, but that is beyond the developers control.

In all other ways Celsius and for all but the most extreme climes in all ways Fahrenheit are great general purpose weather apps that have the advantage of providing the most important information right on the home screen. For a no-frills, weather-centric app Fahrenheit Weather and Temperature on your Home Screen is an excellent choice.

Digital Dictation From Frisbee Smart 2

I’ll admit it. I saw the word frisbee and my mind wandered off to fun summer days in the park tossing a circular disc around. Frisbee Smart 2 isn’t a virtual frisbee throwing game. It’s actually much more useful than that. It’s a dictation service.

The free app, recently released, enables users to record whatever is needed, whether that be a random anecdote or an important memo that needs to be written up by the office secretary. It can all be done through this simple app, right down to the ability to edit and send the files via e-mail or FTP.

Ever security conscious, Frisbee Smart 2 offers encryption and compression options so that the data is stored safely. Using the Frisbee Pro service, users can even send the files directly to a PC either for later consultation or for someone else to type up the audio.

It’s an immensely useful tool for any busy business person, all the more so given the ease in which it can be used.

Frisbee Smart 2 is out now and it’s available for free.

Trivial Pursuit Master Edition Review

By

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: EXCELLENT
iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad

A fine conversion of the classic trivia board game.

Developer: Electronic Arts
Price: $4.99

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.81 out of 5 stars

When Trivial Pursuit was first released for the iPhone, it garnered excellent reviews and for good reason: it’s a great conversion of the classic trivia game. iPad owners have waited long enough for their own native version. Fortunately, they’ve been richly rewarded with Trivial Pursuit Master Edition, a compelling game for any fans of trivia.

The multitude of different modes goes some way to making the $4.99 asking price an easy decision. Comprehensive single player and multiplayer options are available.

For the lone gamer, two great and different ways of playing are possible. There’s the classic Trivial Pursuit, we all know and love. The player works their way around the board collecting up wedges of different colors before their opponent. Plenty of customization options are available with the ability to adjust the number of wedges needed to win and whether wedges can be won on all tiles, or just the traditional means of answering correctly on a Headquarters space. Different AI options are available too with easy being extremely simple to beat and hard requiring some impressive efforts in order to beat them.

Also available is my favorite mode of the iPhone edition: Pursuit mode. This one involves a race to the final square in a linear fashion. It’s a much more fast paced way of playing and ideal to play in short bursts. Questions, much like the rest of the game, are still focused on the six different genres of questions.

Multiplayer includes a Wi-Fi mode so that players can play with others across their local network. More interestingly is that of the Table Top mode so players can pass the device back and forth. It doesn’t work quite as well as playing the game as there’s not much reason to chat. Questions are all multiple choice so there’s no need for anyone to read out questions or answers. It’s not quite as fun as just playing the real thing but it does require less space which is a bonus.

Once the initial batch of questions have been exhausted, plenty of in-app purchases are available to bolster the question supply. These range from a TV pack, Sports, General Knowledge, Encyclopedia and Movies. There’s also the intimidating sounding Master Edition pack for the trivia experts.

While I don’t think the multiplayer features will be used as much as the real thing (unless space is a big issue), the single player options are very enjoyable. In particular, Pursuit is a satisfying experience that’s bound to hook both new and old fans of the game.

Indie Puzzle Platformer Somyeol Coming To iOS This December

Everyone knows that the best work is done when there’s a tight deadline looming. OK, this isn’t the greatest of things to say or the best way to lead a life, but I know I find I work so much harder nearer to deadline day. Kids: you shouldn’t do this, it’s bad. Honest.

Regardless of any of this, there’s an entire game design ethos behind working intensely for short periods of time, namely the Global Game Jam. It’s an event that happens all around the world in which people come together to make a video game from start to finish within 48 hours. Sometimes, some fantastic gems come out of this Jam.

This time round, it’s the turn of Somyeol, a game coming to iOS this December. Previously made for the PC during a Global Game Jam in Germany, Somyeol is a 2D platformer in which players must get the Somyeol people to their goal in as short a time as possible. Sounds easy, right? The twist is that there are numerous Somyeols to control at any one time and they each have their own abilities.

Check out the preview trailer below. It’s certainly looking interesting already.

Favorite Four Apps for Photo Effects

Last week we looked at the best camera replacement apps for the iPhone native app. So, this week we wanted to continue the theme, this time looking at apps that focus on adding those ever-popular effects and filters. Many of the choices feature a camera replacement component, but all do unique things to produce end results that are anything but the average cell camera shot, no matter how high the resolution. All of these apps will make even casual photographers look like virtual experts.

Instagram

Instagram is all about effects and sharing and it's completely free. This long-time user favorite allows shutter bugs to shoot right from the app or use existing images in the photo album and easily add custom filters. Most photo apps have social media integration but Instgram can actually be classified as a social networking app. Users can share on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr, but also less common options ike Posterous and Foursquare and even has a huge community that interacts with likes and comments.

360 Panorama

For panoramic images 360 Panorama is our choice. This universal app allows users to take ad then patch together photos seamlessly to create breath-taking immersive images. The app uses the gyroscope to give users a full 360 view and stitches the images with amazing speed.

Pro HDR

For truly detailed images, high dynamic range photography (HDR) is the way to go. Pro HDR takes a lot of the hassle out of getting the images to look sharp and brilliant in all conditions. This app takes multiple pictures of the same thing with different settings to highlight or fix specific areas and them merges them together. The results are near 8 mega-pixel image quality. This is the only HDR camera app that automates the process, but for those with advanced photography skills there is also a manual option for setting exposure of the images that will make up the final composition.

Hipstmatic

For vintage effects like we got in the 1970′s with plastic encased toy-like cameras which gave very analog results, Hipstamatic is the go-to app for iPhone photographers. It uses what were once considered flaws – like overexposure, odd colour balance and blurring – to create photos with an authentic feel. The app comes with 10 effects for the initial price and five additional effects packs can be purchased in-app. Hipstamtic features a lot of social network integration as well.

Tweetings HD Review

By

Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: TWITTERPATED
iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad

Tweetings HD is an intuitive Twitter client that supports multiple account and much more.

Developer: DW:design
Price: $3.99
Version: 4.2.6
App Reviewed on: iPad 2

iPad Integration Rating: 2.75 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

I'm going to confess up front: Twitter kind of baffles me. I avoided it like the plague until I started a blog. At that time, however, I realized that love it or hate it, it can be an indispensible marketing tool and a great way to make business contacts, as well as being a place where people feel compelled to share their every thought in 140 characters. And, after discovering its value as a news aggregator too, I now have three accounts.

And like all Twitter users with an iPad I have been in search of the ideal client to manage them and make tweeting as intuitive as possible. While I haven't found my Twitter soul mate app yet, I do regularly use one app that does an admirable job on both scores called Tweetings HD.

Tweetings has an inviting interface with a neat menu on the left and the feed just right of it. Tweets open by squeezing the menu in and expanding further to the right. Links themselves open on a neat page that can be easily expanded to fullscreen. It's clean and logical.

Tweetings also supports a ton of features. Users can track current trends or look at what was hot all day and even all week. Personal profiles are easy to manage and the app makes finding past tweets, followers and – what are they called, followees? -easy.

Tweetings also supports lists, favorites, blocking, muting – all that good stuff. While still in beta the current version also has a "similar users" and "recent photos' feature. Tweetings also supports pull-to-refresh.

Composing tweets is easy with auto URL shrinking, scheduling, one tap music and photo sharing and more. There is even Facebook integration for those who like to be heard all over the Internet at once.

Tweetings HD easily supports multiple accounts and switching between them is simple. But, this brings me to my one big issue with the app – it crashes. It tends to do so when I switch handles, but also mid-tweet and at other inconvenient times. The developers release frequent updates adding new features, but the stability issue has been present for as long as I've been using the app and persists in the latest version. It is sufficiently frustrating to keep me on the lookout for the inevitable “next” client that targets my needs.

But, I continue to keep it on my dock, because Twitter's free app is too limited, apps designed primarily for consumption don't serve my needs either, and I am not a power user. In my quest for something in between, Tweetings offers the most features and most comfortable GUI. And, I admit it; I just like the chirping it does when my tweets get some action.
