Enjoy Illinois Helps Explore The Unknown

Did you know that there is more to the state of Illinois than Chicago, sports franchises, and the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln?  I know it seems hard to believe, but thanks to the due diligence of the Illinois Office of Tourism there is a new app that will help newcomers explore every nook and cranny of the state.

Enjoy Illinois is designed to help residents and visitors alike check out over ten thousand attractions located all over the map.  Tapping into the GPS capability of iPhone’s and iPad’s, the application can even help wanderers find interesting places close to where they reside.

If trip planning is more in your wheelhouse, the software can help you design an action packed trip, every step of the way.  Everything from shopping to food can be found in Enjoy Illinois, along with special discounts reserved specifically for users of the app.  Buckle in, because it sounds like a road trip might be in your future!

Awesome Saucer Review

Awesome Saucer Review

By
Rob Rich on August 17th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: WELL & TRULY AWESOME
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

True to its name, Awesome Saucer is one heck of a crazy-fun insane trip of a game.

Developer: Nebuleux Games
Price: $1.99
Version: 1.0
App Reviewed on: iPhone 3GS
Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4.75 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4.75 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Overall Rating: 4.63 out of 5 stars

I was a bit skeptical about Awesome Saucer at first. I mean, the title seems like kind of a boast, and there are an awful lot of apps in the App Store that talk a big game but fail to deliver. After spending a mere five minutes with this game I wasn’t just impressed; now I think the whole “awesome” thing is actually a bit understated.

The short explanation: players have to blow up lots of aliens and rack-up a high score. The in-depth explanation: each level or wave is timed, with bonuses and the occasional new weapon issued if it’s cleared before the clock hits zero. Power-ups will randomly give the saucer a temporary upgrade, including boosted speed, score multipliers and access to all weapons, but sometimes grabbing one can use up too much time. It’s one big psychedelic love letter to the quarter-munching arcade games of the good old days.

I won’t be subtle with my praise here. Awesome Saucer blends together all these crazy elements into such a well-polished package it would be easy to mistake it for a major game company release. It’s almost perfect for what it is. The fantastic audio, insanely colorful visuals, wacky weapons and slightly blown-out radio voice of the pilot put me in a kind of trance. One that’s incredibly hard to break out of.

Unfortunately it can be a bit hard to distinguish when I’m being attacked because the action and visuals are so flipping crazy, but there are three difficulty settings to ease the transition and even the early levels are an absolute blast. It’s also a little disappointing that there aren’t any achievements of any kind, or even online leaderboards, but I’m having way too much fun with it to mind.

It may sound like I’m gushing, partly because I am, but Awesome Saucer is one of those games that needs to be owned. As insane as it all is, it blends together perfectly and creates some of the most amazing and beautiful craziness I’ve experienced in quite some time. Lovers of all things with that distinct arcade feel absolutely have to give this one a try.

WordWit Teaches The Nuances Of The English Language

It’s really quite easy to get words jumbled up, especially for those not 100% confident with their English language skills when it comes to writing things down. It’s not so much the obvious mistakes that are easily made but more the subtle ones. Things like spelling breach as breech or compliment as complement. Small and subtle but it makes all the difference. For those who are keen to ensure that such blips are a distant memory, an app like WordWit has the potential to not only educate and entertain in its mission to decode the secrets of confusing word usage and spelling.

Hundreds of misused words are paired with the incorrect entry with the user needing to figure it out for themselves. Simple explanations are offered for these variances to ensure that the differences are laid out obviously for those learning their way around the language. There are even handy mnemonics offered to ensure that the correct answer is remembered easily for the future. All of WordWit’s entries have been written from scratch by their team with even the quotes featured throughout carefully researched and chosen for the purpose of educating. The quotes themselves are frequently educational too which is always a benefit.

Crucially, WordWit maintains the fun factor with quizzes available to keep things entertaining as well as educational. The ideal way for any student to learn in particular. The quiz functionality isn’t the only way to learn though with the option to look up specific words or browse the selection too.

For the word addict, it’s also possible to suggest words that the developers may have missed out first time thus hopefully ensuring that they feature in future updates.

Fun and a way of learning something. What more could be needed in an app? WordWit is out now for $1.99.

Kard Combat Review

Kard Combat Review

By
Rob Rich on August 17th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: WORTH A LOOK
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Additional content and a bit more access for freemium users makes Kard Combat a serious “Not Quite a CCG” contender.

Developer: Hothead Games
Price: Free
Version: 1.2
App Reviewed on: iPhone 3GS

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 4.75 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.44 out of 5 stars

I mentioned the existence of Hothead Games’ Kard Combat a few weeks back, but now that it’s seen a pretty significant update (and 148apps has begun to cover freemium titles), I figured it was time for a full-fledged review. So how does this quick-and-dirty card battler hold up now that its second decimal has risen above zero? Quite well, actually.

As I’ve mentioned previously, Kard Combat is a kind of “lite” CCG (Collectible Card Game) with a comparatively small library and an increased focus on fast, strategic battles. There’s a basic narrative involving mages vying for the top-spot in the tower by fighting each other one-on-one all the way up, but it’s little more than a backdrop. The real focus is on the duels, which are generally simple with a set of randomly chosen cards (taken from a player’s stock) available throughout the whole match and constantly charging magic “pools.” More powerful cards take more magic to summon, some cards inhibit an opponent’s cards, etc…

Once the basic concept of “place one of the cards that isn’t blacked-out in the play field” is grasped, there’s a lot of little nuanced strategy to master. Steamrolling over a low-level AI enemy might work at first, but tougher mages (and online players) are nowhere near that easy. To really have a chance it’s vital to plan ahead. Use spells to buff cards, save that big nasty one for the right moment, try to keep an opponent’s cards blocked so that they can’t do direct damage and above all learn to lose with dignity. Because it will happen. Especially online.

Yet as fun as all of the surprisingly intense duels can be, I can’t help but lament the “half-access” this freemium title grants its users. Each of the eight (recently up from four) mage types and their varying strategies is fun to mess around with, and there’s bound to be one that fits each player’s preferred strategy, but they can only be used for a handful of tower floors and a couple of single player challenges apiece. In order to access the rest of their campaigns (and by extension unlock all of their cards), players will have to pay. Thankfully multiplayer is still available for non-paying users, but I feel like those who’ve taken the plunge are at a distinct advantage with more (and better) summons at their disposal.

Even as nothing more than a gimped-but-free distraction, Kard Combat is still a lot of fun. Provided players have the ability to play online, anyway. All things considered, $3 (or $6 with the four expansion mages) isn’t a bad price to pay for what’s on offer but players looking for an awesome freebie might be a bit disappointed if they never dabble in the multiplayer mode.

Grab Last Stand Stan While it’s Still Free

The poor, defenseless little Po’Trubians are under attack by an army of evil robo-beings known as “Sleevils.” It falls to one lone hero (of course) to defend the obnoxiously helpless little buggers and save their world from total annihilation. Enter Stan (STatic Alien Neutralizer), the rather junky old robot/veteran hero-type.

The plot serves little purpose except to bookend the campaign levels, but the blasting is really what it’s all about anyway. Stan is rooted to the spot, which is odd seeing as he’s in space, so players have to direct his blasts by tapping (and holding) on the screen to get him to blow away the alien aggressors. Par for the course, there are various upgrades that will unlock as the levels progress which can be carried over to the Survival Mode. Which is good because it’s near impossible to last longer than a few seconds in Survival with the default gear.

Anyone who wants to get their mits on a fun little distraction for absolutely should check out this ad-free version of Last Stand Stan before the sale ends. It’s a simple arcade shooter but the myriad of destructive unlockables keep the motivation to play longer high. Plus it makes time pass, which is always nice when stuck at an airport or something.

Megacity HD Review

Megacity HD Review

By
Rob Rich on August 17th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: A SPRAWLING METROPOLIS
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Megacity HD manages to combine random tile-placing board games and city building with surprising success.

Developer: Cole Powered Games
Price: $1.99
Version: 1.0
App Reviewed on: iPhone 3GS

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 4.75 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.44 out of 5 stars

City-building simulation games have been quite popular over the year, and with good reason: people like to run things without the fear of failure. Sure, it’s possible for one of these virtual cities to crumble to dust due to economic decay, natural disasters or atomic monster attacks, but it’s just a game so there’s no real pressure. However, even without the risk it’s still fun to pretend we’re the one running everything.

Megacity HD takes the concept and boils it down to the absolute basics. Namely placing certain buildings next to others in order to make them better, and making groups of buildings better in order to create a successful urban center. It’s much more straightforward in practice than is sounds. It’s really just a bunch of tile placing, but certain tiles (a.k.a buildings) will have positive or negative effects on those around them. The goal is to use these positive attributes to increase the property values of houses and apartments in the far-left column, and once the added values meet or exceed a predetermined number the column is cleared and the next one slides over. It’s pretty simple at first, but without proper planning it’s very easy to get stuck later on.

The simple act of placing houses and other structures strategically has a pleasant addictiveness to it. As does watching the surrounding areas’ appearances change based on the good or bad things dropped next to them. For example; a normal house looks okay, a “good” house looks fancier and a “bad” house looks rather gross. It’s a simple effect that makes the experience that much more appealing. But what makes it most appealing, to me anyway, is how experience is steadily gained during play and will unlock new building tiles as higher levels are reached. It makes for one heck of a good reason to keep playing regardless of the lack of any sort of multiplayer. Save online high scores.

Really, all I can hold against Megacity HD is that it eventually runs out of stuff to unlock. Inevitably there won’t be any more specific tasks to complete or community colleges and the like to earn, then it’s down to nothing but score-chasing. Kind of a downer.

Of course, Megacity HD is an iOS app so there’s a good chance it’ll receive at least a few updates in the future. Some of which may add new things. Even if they don’t, it’s still one of those games that’s always a pleasure to come back to. Whether or not everything’s been unlocked, it’s still going to make the hours melt away.
