In the official description of Treemaker on the App Store, the game’s creator describes it as a physics-based puzzle game, but I disagree with that description. Really, what we have here is a physics-based platformer – and one that’s actually quite creative and fun to play.

Players control a creature who must swing from platform to platform, rescuing stranded tiny tree creatures and collecting orbs along the way. The controls are easy enough, using only the touchscreen. Players tap where they want to cast a vine and then fly towards that location. Gamers can then swing the creature back and forth by dragging their finger along the touchscreen. When they have enough inertia, they can launch the character towards its next destination by tapping the screen.

In addition to platforming, there are some puzzle-like elements. For instance, gamers will have to carefully choose their path if they want to collect all the orbs in each level. Likewise, they’ll come across obstacles that require some logical thinking if they’re to be overcome.

Most the enjoyment of Treemaker comes from learning and mastering the physics that control the world. Combined, the controls and physics are tricky initially, but once gamers get a full grip on them, they’ll have fun with the title.

But while the game itself is fun and features some smart level-design overall, the levels themselves could do with more design variety. The game doesn’t change much as it progresses, making the experience a little repetitive over time.

There’s one other complaint I have. Unfortunately, while Treemaker features a unique, memorable art-direction and stylized visuals, the lack of variety across the different worlds hurts the experience. As gamers progress, the levels change primarily in background color only, which is a little disappointing.

Ultimately, Treemaker is a fun game. The physics-based platforming works well, though it’s inhibited by stagnant level design. That said, for anyone looking for a fun, portable platformer, this one’s worth checking out.

Mega Mall Story Review

Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: CONSUMER-FRIENDLY
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

The developer with a reputation for fun, super-addictive sims does it again.

Developer: Kairosoft
Price: $3.99
Version: 1.0.0
App Reviewed on: iPhone 3GS
Graphics / Sound Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4.75 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 4.75 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.38 out of 5 stars

I think most App Store users can agree: after laying eyes on a new release featuring that iconic character design and the word “Story” in the title, it’s almost impossible not to start salivating like a Pavlovian Saint Bernard. Kairosoft games just kind of have that effect on people. They always manage to find that sweet-spot. The one that has people repeating “Just a little more…” over and over again like some kind of cult mantra. If it were any other developer, there might be some suspense here. Perhaps I’m going to say this one’s the exception? Maybe it’s a step down? But no. It’s a Kairosoft game, so it should come as no surprise that it’s fantastic.

What might come as a surprise is that Mega Mall Story is quite possibly their best to date.

The mall only has a few stores to begin with, but that changes quickly. After customers start to trickle in, money from their purchases can be used to build new stores and facilities. These, in turn, bring in more customers, who bring in more money, and the cycle continues. Happy customers don’t just bring cash though, they also bestow hearts which can be used to buy plans for new stores. Meanwhile, existing stores can level-up when they’ve had enough business or upgraded using hearts. There’s a ton of nuance here.

What helps to elevate Mega Mall Story past all the rest is its slightly different balance of management and construction. Previous titles focused more on small-scale constructions and characters: things like tutoring individual students or building vending machines. This time around the tables have turned, removing the need to micro-manage individuals and emphasizing the importance of larger facilities. It’s a subtle difference, but one that makes it much more accessible to first-timers. In fact, this is the first Kairosoft game I’ve played that doesn’t feature a lackluster tutorial.

Any Kairosoft App Store release should be an insta-buy for sim fans at this point, and Mega Mall Story is certainly no exception. It’s well worth the meager asking price, but buyer beware: it can have a profound effect on productivity. And one’s social life.

Arcade Action From SEGA With Brick People

Coming this fall will be a game that’s all about stacking bricks and fast. Yup, it’s a concept we’ve all seen before but SEGA’s Brick People does look like it’s going to be a heck of a lot of fun!

Previously hitting the arcades, Brick People has been quite a hit already. Now on its way to iOS screens, it’s all about stacking blocks in front of a screen in order to help the aforementioned brick people reach food. Predictably, it’s not all smooth sailing with players having to keep an eye out for the Brick Monster who makes demands such as the building of specific structures in exchange for more time.

Brick People sounds like it’s going to be a pretty frantic yet exciting affair. Multi touch will definitely be playing a useful role here and there’ll be head to head multiplayer via Wi-Fi as well as on one device when it comes to the iPad version. There will also be the ever fun online leaderboards courtesy of GameCenter.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on Brick People‘s progress. In the mean time, check out the gameplay video and screenshots below.

Jetpack Joyride Review

Our Rating: ★★★★★ :: JOYFUL
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Jetpack Joyride is an endless game from Halfbrick that has players controlling a jetpack-clad Barry Steakfries through an underground lab full of danger.

Developer: Halfbrick
Price: $0.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPod touch 4

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.88 out of 5 stars

After playing Jetpack Joyride, I am convinced that I know how the Halfbrick development process works. The first step is to come up with an awesomely ludicrous idea, like a ninja that slices fruit, or a dual-stick shooter featuring a zombie T-Rex, or in this case, a game featuring a machine gun jetpack. Step two is to then go out and make the idea play as exceptionally as possible. Jetpack Joyride follows this brilliant formula to a T.

The basic gameplay has players holding down on the screen to use the jetpack strapped to recurring Halfbrick protagonist Barry Steakfries, which propels them upward. Players try to get as far as possible, avoiding lasers and missiles while trying to collect coins, tokens, and vehicle powerups. Coins can be used to buy new outfits, new jetpacks, vehicle upgrades, and single-use items for getting a 750m head start, blasting for a little extra distance after death, or reviving instantly, though that Quick Revive costs a king’s ransom. Players can also buy coins through in-app purchases, or even just an instant coin value doubler for $0.99.

This game is supremely addictive; I found this extraordinarily difficult to put down for just ‘one more’ session that quickly would turn into a couple dozen more. The mission system helps to make even subpar sessions productive, as completing tasks gives the player stars that go towards the player’s rank, which also means more money for the player that goes toward unlocking more of the game’s content. When the maximum rank is achieved, the player can start over, providing even more excuses to play more Jetpack Joyride! The game’s whimsical style only makes things more entertaining, particularly when high-fiving scientists is an objective, and when the “Profit Bird” vehicle is being flown around, with money falling everywhere it flies. It’s a sly piece of commentary on games with birds in them on the App Store, though coming from the developer of Fruit Ninja, it’s kind of like millionaires complaining about billionaires.

This is a game very heavily impacted by luck; sometimes obstacles will be just in the way with seemingly impossible to time avoidance windows. As well, high score runs will almost seemingly require the Quick Revive which either costs 10,000 coins per use, or requires a lucky spin in Final Spin. Luck can benefit the player or hinder them, but it is always a factor, for better or for worse.

This is one of my favorite iOS games in recent memory, and one of the best endless games on the App Store. I cannot stress how highly I recommend this game, and I will keep playing it long after this review is finished.
