Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is Back on the App Store… and It’s Hungry

I was working in a now-defunct bookstore when Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was released on an unsuspecting public. I don’t have precise figures but I can say with certainty that the book sold like mad. It was a combination of a small publisher doing a somewhat limited run, and a level of consumer interest that not many predicted. People love Victorian zombies, apparently. Who knew?

A year after the novel’s release, a side-scrolling game based on the twisted tale made its way on to the App Store. But Quirk Books isn’t done with the iOS platform yet. Oh no. Not by a long shot. Now the literary “classic” has been given new life (*rimshot*) in the form of an illustrated, interactive eBook.

This isn’t any regular old eBook, mind. It’s full of interactive (and incredibly gory) illustrations and features an original score and sound effects. Sounds awesome, yes? Well there’s more. Not only can users enjoy all manner of zombie-centric animated illustrations as they read this unexpectedly popular story, they can also read the entire original Austin text by flipping their device upside-down. Even more interesting (and excessive), tilting the device on its side will simultaneously display both the interactive zombie-infested re-imagining and the literary classic at the same time.

Anyone who might have held off on reading this most interesting interpretation, but still wants to, should definitely have a look-see at Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: The Interactive eBook. It’s absolutely stuffed with content and at $4.99 (for a limited time) it’s currently almost half of the physical tome’s price.

Hands On With Pocket God: Decapithon

Ordinarily, it would sound pretty arrogant to suggest that a mere update to a game could quite easily be sold as a full title. When the update in question is for Pocket God however, then it becomes distinctly more plausible.

Since its release over 2 years ago, Pocket God has turned into a hugely successful phenomenon and one that has consistently evolved thanks to its many updates over the years. This time round is arguably the biggest update yet with a game within a game added to the Universal version of the title. That game? It’s called Decapithon and it’s very much like arcade platformers of old.

Much like everything else in Pocket God, Decapithon is easy to access with players simply moving over to the graveyard island and dropping a pygmy into the teleporter. In that teleporter, Pocket God turns into a whole new game but with all the fun and splendour that we’ve come to expect.

Players tilt their iPad to move from left to right along the islands and platforms of each level. It’s not that simple, though, otherwise that’d be dull. A plentiful supply of the undead get in the way of progressing and players must throw axes at them to chop their heads off. In typical Pocket God fashion, it’s still endearingly sweet. Controls are simple to use with tilting left to right moving the pgymy and tapping one of the two buttons to jump. Firing axes is done by tapping in the relevant direction, adding some flexibility to where can be fired at. It’s as simple as that meaning that anyone can join in.

Different enemy types emerge to keep things interesting and there’s even the prospect of boss battles too. While the humble Pygmy Zombie is pretty easy to defeat with a few tosses of the axe, the Moon Witch can throw acid ‘loogies’ and the Big Booga is as fearsome as it sounds. It’s a satisfying experience and excellent fun. The only annoyance I could really pinpoint is that of the tilt controls. I’m no big fan of them admittedly and with the size of the iPad, it would have been convenient to be able to switch to something button based, especially when playing on the move.

Despite that quibble though, Decapithon is just the kind of game that would easily work as a $0.99 title so as a free update for owners of Pocket God, it’s an exceptional addition. It’s been touted as one of the most ambitious updates for the game yet and quite rightly so. Fortunately it’s paid off with style.

Pocket God: Decapithon is available now as a free update for iPad owners of Pocket God or it’s priced at $0.99 for new owners.

Space Based Graphic Novel Exodus169 Comes To iPhone

Graphic novels appear to be going through a bit of a renaissance period in recent times with increasing numbers of people intrigued by the very notion. So it’s pretty cool to see a cumulative effort between a BAFTA (the equivalent of the Emmys in the UK) nominated screenwriter, a BAFTA winning executive producer and an award-winning graphic artist come together in the form of a new iPhone based graphic novel.

The novel entitled Exodus169 is all about an epic journey through space to the Planet Lumina, where humans hope to establish their first colony beyond Earth. Obviously things are bound to not quite go according to plan and it all makes for a gripping novel.

The novel is accompanied by stunning artwork and an original and fully-voiced soundtrack which all add a touch of class to proceedings. Depth is provided through a number of extras such as videos, character profiles, character blogs and even an on-board newspaper with new content uploaded weekly.

It’s interesting stuff and at a decent price too. The app along with Episode 1 and the regularly updated extras are free while Episode 2 and future instalments are only $0.99. Well worth a look for any graphic novel fan.

Plenty Of Bargains From Gameloft This Halloween

Never one to miss an opportunity to offer some great price reductions, Gameloft has announced a sale in honor of Halloween.

Six games in all are on offer at a bargain price of $0.99 each. The selection is a bit of a mixed bag, however.

For the kids and general movie tie-in fans, there’s the choice of Shrek Forever After available in both iPhone and iPad varieties. The same discount is offered for the rather dubious Iron Man 2, again with a choice of iPhone or iPad.

We’d recommend giving those two a miss. However, do consider MMORPG Order & Chaos Online which is a pretty special homage to World of Warcraft.

Racing fans may want to consider Driver, the iPhone adaptation of the popular getaway driving console title.

There’s a discount for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater clone Skater Nation too but it might be best left to the avid skateboarding fans, desperate for a similar title.

Probably the biggest bargain is that of Gameloft Action Pack. With three games bundled together, Hero of Sparta, Blades of Fury and Brothers in Arms, it might not be the best selection of games but it’s pretty unbeatable when it comes to frugal gaming.

For those after a fright, Gameloft has provided a very creepy video to advertise what’s going on. It’s a tad bizarre and unnerving.

All these bargains run for the next week.

Blowup!! Review

Blowup!! Review

Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: BRILLIANT BOT MATCHING
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Take a matching game, juice it up with techno beats, fast-paced gameplay, some robots, and this is what you get.

Developer: Cravemob Co.,Ltd

Price: $0.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0.1
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 3GS

Graphics / Sound Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.38 out of 5 stars

Matching games are prevalent in the iOS App Store, and there is no lack of inventive new takes on the genre. There are many games out there that have successfully blended the gameplay of matching games with elements of other popular genres. These type of hybrid games have become very popular as shown by the success of games like Puzzle Quest and Dungeon Raid. However, there are still very few matching games that focus solely on matching and do it well. Blowup!! is one of the rare exceptions here. The game is bright and fun, challenging and satisfying. Players that like matching games at all should not miss this one.

Blowup isn’t a typical matching game. It’s not find three similar tiles and line them up. By tapping grounds of like-colored blocks, players can eliminate them from the playing field. By strategically eliminating groups of blocks, player can create larger groups of adjacent, like-colored blocks. When a group of eight or more blocks is eliminated a meter is filled. This meter gradually drains, and when it is empty, the game is over. Players must continually build combos larger than eight blocks to keep the meter filled. As the game progresses, more colors are introduced and making large matches becomes more difficult.

The more blocks players have matched at once, the larger more points are generated. As matches of over eight blocks are made, the appearance of the blocks change and robot faces appear on the block. As the more blocks are matched to the group, the robot faces evolve to give the player a quick reference to just how many blocks are in the group at any given moment. This added visual element makes the game that much more fun and gives players even more incentive to create big matches.

There are three different modes and each mode has a distinct techno music track and a maximum score that players are working to reach. As players get closer to the maximum score more musical elements are added and the soundtrack becomes more complex, adding to the intensity of trying to quickly find and make matches to keep the meter filled.

The bright colors and fabulous visuals, the retro style and the chip tune music tracks all work together with the rock-solid gameplay to make Blowup!! one of the best matching games out there. This game should not be missed.

Yes, here we are, back from another long look at the price drops in the App Store, braving them again for your downloading pleasure and time saving benefit. Here’s what we have for you today:

ChuChu Rocket! HD – Was $4.99, now $0.99
This Sega classic rated 4 stars in our review, which said, “this is still ChuChu Rocket, and the game holds up well to this day. I had some great times reliving this game on my iPhone and iPad, and it's great to see the game brought back for a new generation of gamers and for those who enjoyed the game back in its heyday to be able to relive it.”

Puzzle Quest Chapter 1 - Was $1.99, now FREE
The first of the gaming mashup sensation is now free on the App Store. Taking the zen of match-three with the addictiveness of a RPG, this is the game that started it all.

Parodise – Was $0.99, now FREE
Our reviewer had this to say, “the gameplay is a whole lot of fun, and rewards a player for learning the way in which different items react and for consequently reacting quickly to these items themselves. I will add that the written content may not be suited to the very youngest members of the family, but they probably wouldn't take the time to read it anyway.”
