iOS 5, iCloud, and iTunes – Set Up in a Multiple Device Family

For families and multiple device owners, there’s a lot of confusion on how to set up iCloud and iTunes under iOS 5. Under iOS 4 there was just a single iTunes login that members of a family or work group could use to share iTunes purchases. Now, under iOS 5 there are now multiple logins on a single device, leading to confusion. We can help.

The problem under iOS 5 is that users do not want to share their contacts, email, photostream, calendar, or other iCloud services with family members or co-workers. Yet they still want to share iTunes purchases across multiple devices and users. Luckily Apple has left a simple solution for this in iOS 5.

First, each user in the group should have their own iCloud account. This will maintain privacy across all of the iCloud services like calendars and contacts. It will give each user a unique identity. Next, the users in the group can share a single iTunes account for store purchases. Here’s how to do it.

Under the settings in iOS, there are two unique sections for iCloud and for the iTunes Store (listed as just Store in settings).

iCloud Settings: Under iCloud, set up each user with their own account and turn on the services they wish to use.

iTunes Store Settings: Under the Store section in Settings on each of the iOS devices in the group, sign in with the shared iTunes account for purchases from the App Store, etc.

If you have multiple iTunes accounts, you can sign in and out of the different accounts without issue from the Store settings. That is unless you turn on automatic downloads. New to iOS 5 are automatic downloads for the iTunes Store for Apps, Books, and Music. If this device only uses the one account, it’s safe to turn on any of these that you wish. But, turning this on will lock this device to this iTunes account for 90 days. So if multiple accounts are used, do not turn on automatic downloads.

It should also be noted that previously as many devices as needed could share iTunes purchases. But now, officially only five devices can share purchases. Though it seems as though this currently only applies to music.

We hope this has helped at least a little bit in one of the more confusing parts of iOS 5. Still confused? Hit us below in the comments.

iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Movie themed Hangman that’s fun for a short time.

Movie Quotes Hangman isn’t going to win any prizes when it comes to its looks. It’s downright basic to look at. Underneath that simple black and white surface however is an addictive game ideal for movie buffs. It’s the traditional pen and paper game of Hangman but with a movie based theme. Every round involves a quote from a well known film.

The story behind it all is that the player must save Querentin Tentarino from being hanged by the executioner. Enter the wrong letter or number and the executioner gets one step closer to pulling the lever that condemns Tentarino to his death. Players get seven wrong guesses before it’s game over. Each game consists of 50 rounds in all, each offering a different quotation. With 600 different quotes available, there’s a reasonable amount to do here before quotes begin to repeat themselves.

As a big film buff, I found it relatively easy to work my way through the 50 stages. I didn’t even need to use all three of the joker cards available that offer a new quote if used. Relative ease isn’t to the detriment of the fun though as it was quite enjoyable to figure out the answers. Certainly much more so than just guessing words as is usually the way with Hangman games. The movies are varied, including classics such as Casablanca but also including recent hits such as The Social Network.

My only reservation is that Movie Quotes Hangman is going to need regular updates to keep interesting. With the current supply of quotes, it won’t take players that long to exhaust their options. Updates every few weeks, providing new questions, could be just what’s needed to keep the game fresh. A series of theme packs could provide similar results also. As it stands though and at its low price, Movie Quotes Hangman is still worth playing for the film buff. Just don’t expect it to last forever.

I can’t help but wonder; once mankind has branched out into space and begun to colonize new worlds and so on, would they really call them “Space Pirates?” I mean, they’re already in space. Space is kind of where everyone goes now. Why not just call them “Pirates?” But I’m getting (way) off-subject here. I’m not supposed to be discussing possible semantics for situations I’ll never encounter in the far future, I’m supposed to be talking about e3D: SpaceShip, a new “Escape” game from Bored.com.

After getting boarded and captured by these pirates who frequent space, players have to escape (duh) and take the ship back. The game follows the expected formula of finding objects, occasionally combining these objects and using them to solve all manner of puzzles. In space. Additionally, extra collectibles can be found and completion times are posted to Game Center. And who doesn’t love a good speed run or collectible hunt?

Anyone with even an ounce of interest in puzzle-solving or Escape-themed games can download e3D: SpaceShip right this very moment. It’s even free!

Steambirds: Survival Review

By

Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: UNFRIENDLY SKIES
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Steambirds: Survival is an endless survival take on the Steambirds aerial turn-based strategy gameplay.

Developer: Spry Fox
Price: Free
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPod touch 4

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Playtime: Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.63 out of 5 stars

Steambirds: Survival takes Spry Fox’s original Steambirds gameplay design – turn-based aerial combat – adds in a dash of Halfbrick magic by making the game into an endless survival game, and oh, it’s free to play too. Players try to survive as long as possible in the unfriendly skies, piloting their plane to try and outmaneuver other planes to shoot them down without taking any damage as well. Players are also tasked with missions that grant additional rewards as well as propel the story along. Players earn copper for everything they do, and this can be used to unlock other levels, which each have their own plane and enemy setups, as well as to hire allies to help out on a mission.

The game goes at a much faster pace than it did in its original incarnation, and that is to the game’s ultimate benefit. Every action feels like it has a direct consequence, and it does feel more like an action game than the chess game that the original was. It still requires strategy, just a different kind, one that is more immediate. One stupid move and it’s game over. There’s a tension that the original game just does not have that makes this game si much more engrossing and replayable because of the survival structure. Yet, the mission structure also present gives any random game session  a sense of purpose that most endless survival games do not have.

Steambirds: Survival‘s banner ads are nothing if not absurdly annoying. They feel like they’re awkwardly placed on top of the rest of the game with no regard for the rest of the game’s interface. That, and the overwhelming majority of them seems to be limited to dating services. I get it, I’m playing a turn-based strategy game, I don’t need to be reminded I’m single! The ads cost $2.99 to remove, when purchasing the “Unlock all levels” IAP. As well, the game appears to have OpenFeint cloud saves; but not between the phone and tablet versions. Both versions are free; why this couldn’t just be a universal app baffles me. The tutorial is unskippable, which is incredibly annoying.

The free to play elements are particularly odious here, but if the ads were toned down or removed entirely, the experience would be a lot better. The free price is otherwise hard to beat, and the Halfbrick influence on the game can be felt. For even a turn-based strategy game, this feels snappy and action-packed, and it is a great evolution of the Steambirds design. There’s just work needed to improve the meta experience.

It’s that time of the week again when Chillingo unleashes some new and exciting games at our iOS devices. This time round, it’s the turn of two games previously covered by us, namely Super Crossfire and Little Lost Chick.

Previously an Xbox Live Indie Arcade gem, Super Crossfire offers intense and enjoyable top-down shooting fun. An unique switching mechanic enables players to warp from the bottom to the top of the screen thus avoiding enemy fire as they shoot at the waves of enemies coming at them.

Super Crossfire comes in two varieties: an iPhone version priced at $0.99 and an Universal build for iPad owners priced at $2.99.

Check out the impressive gameplay trailer below.

Little Lost Chick offers a different kind of experience, providing physics based puzzle fun for both casual and veteran players. Aimed at the whole family, Little Lost Chick focuses on Bruce the baby bird as he tries to make his way home. 100 levels in all provides varied gameplay such as having to cut vines, clear soft ground or bounce around on leaves. The physics engine ensures that everything responds just how the player would expect.

Little Lost Chick is another title available in two forms. A $0.99 version for iPhone users and an Universal build for iPad players priced at $2.99.

Vectoria Review

By
on October 13th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: REQUIRES PATIENCE
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Vectoria is a vector-based drawing program that creates beautiful geometric patterns, but only if you can figure out how to use the controls.

Developer: Mindbrix
Price: $4.99
Version: 1.0.4
App Reviewed on: iPod Touch 4, iPad 2

iPhone Integration Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.25 out of 5 stars

The fact that, upon first launch, Vectoria opens up with the dense 19-page users manual should be a warning that this application is not for the faint of heart. The manual and included video tutorials are a recent addition to the app, likely due to numerous reviewer comments about how unfathomable the drawing controls are. The developers clearly tried their best to painstakingly explain how to draw arcs and lines, and manipulate the color and opacity controls. The reality is that most users, myself included, will skip over this material and want to give the program a shot right off the bat.

Vectoria has sort of a spartan intrigue to it, and feels so bizarre and esoteric that it makes me want to try and understand it because it looks so highly technical and cool. The triangular-shaped drawing pen/puck/turtle object in the middle of the screen reminded me of a 1980's Space Invaders type arcade game, but less pixelated. By manipulating the pen, a user can create any number of lines and arcs, set color and opacity, and duplicate this micropattern into a beautiful geometric form.

Once a drawing is completed, it can be easily shared via email, Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, attached to email, saved to the Photo Album, or exported to PDF. This is one function of the app that is clear and makes total sense.

This is not a pick-up-and-go type of app and certainly not for the ADHD among us. In order to truly tap into Vectoria's power, a user has to really read the instructions and practice a bit to get the hang of the interface tools. It bears little (if any) resemblance to other vector-based drawing software, such as Adobe Illustrator, so the faster those usage conventions are forgotten, the better. I got pretty frustrated the first few times I used it, and went back to load a few of the examples so I could try out some of the features the app claimed to have.

Usability difficulties aside, Vectoria does a lot with interaction controls designed for mathematical drawing, such as the Luminance and Hue section fans. The controls – once understood – seem very usable for small-format drawing, and could possibly represent a new paradigm in vector-based design on a small screen using gesture-based interaction.

Vectoria's biggest weakness is that the controls are simply not intuitive; many of the conventions used in popular drawing programs have been abandoned in favor of its über-minimalistic style, and this causes usability to suffer. Reviewers in the iTunes App Store seem to agree that Vectoria's steep learning curve really diminishes the enjoyment a casual user might get, and this major flaw will need to be corrected before Vectoria becomes "the best line art generator on the planet".

SpaceChem Review

By
on October 13th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: CEREBRAL
iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad

There’s nothing else like SpaceChem. It’s a cerebral pleasure but one that may intimidate some.

Developer: Zachtronics Industries

Overall Rating: 3.81 out of 5 stars

PC/Mac indie gaming fans might recognize the name SpaceChem. It’s a puzzle game that’s widely regarded as one of the best indie titles of the year. Having played the iPad version, it’s clear to see why but that’s not to say that SpaceChem is a game for everyone. On the App Store, it particularly stands out as a challenging title with nothing else like it out there.

The idea behind it is that the player takes the role of a Reactor Engineer whose task is to create circuits through which atoms and molecules flow and eventually synthesis chemicals. It’s a lofty idea and one that at first feels intimidating. The tutorial is comprehensive and it needs to be. There’s a huge amount to take in. Mass producing chemicals is about as easy as one would imagine it would be in reality and instructions are very detailed. At its most basic, players have to bring together two elements then output the correct compound. It gets much more complex than that though with the need for red and blue ‘waldos’ which can be manipulated and programmed to complete numerous instructions.

The depth of options for manoeuvring and manipulating the chemicals is extensive. At first, it’s bordering on scary, certainly compared to so many other puzzle games available for the iPad. Players will initially feel a little dimwitted in the early stages. I certainly felt that way until it all began to click. It’s not long until players find themselves having to combine numerous reactors, programming everything in sight and even warding off enemies. It’s a brainteaser in the purest sense of the word, even more so given the fact that there’s practically an unlimited number of ways to complete each level. With 40 levels available as part of the campaign plus 100 more available in the player created ResearchNet section, there’s plenty to do here.

SpaceChem isn’t the most beautiful of games but it’s certainly complex. Controls are easy to use and the concept is perfect for the iPad screen. Unlike other games on the App store, this isn’t one that can be played in brief doses while commuting. It needs plenty of time to sink in and a similar amount of concentration. It’s a whole new way of thinking. SpaceChem is rewarding though and the 40 levels to work through will definitely keep players busy.
