Dragon Island Just Might Fill that Monster-Collecting Void on iOS

Everyone’s gaga for catching and training monsters. It’s a shockingly popular genre, which makes its overall lack of representation on the App Store all the more odd. That’s not so say that no one’s ever tried, but there just aren’t that many choices at the moment. Greyhound Games, with help from ZigZaGame, is looking to do their part by releasing Dragon Island.

The overall concept of Dragon Island is as expected: capture monsters, level-up monsters, evolve and combine monsters to create new monsters and fight other monsters with said monsters. What sets it apart from the scant few other games in the genre on iOS is the use of actual time instead of energy or mana, setting a specific lineup for monsters (think “batting order”), a sprawling map full of places to explore and dungeons. The dungeons are of particular note because they’re not only randomly-generated, but can also contain special monsters, treasures, their own towns and even other dungeons.

Currently the game is about 75% complete (according to the developer), and they’re looking to the community to take it well beyond the 100% mark. They’ve set up a Kickstarter page to raise funds so that they can include more of, well, everything. More monsters, more dungeons, more items and more game in general.

What’s there is already looking really good (placeholder graphics notwithstanding). I’m particularly fond of the monster illustrations. And the thought of Roguelike dungeons in a monster-collecting rpg has me salivating something fierce. If anyone echoes my sentiment, then I urge them to look into Dragon Island. Don’t forget to take a gander at the handful of monster images (20+ out of 200) in the gallery below, either. Also, “LOL” at Unhappy Bird.

Not so long ago, Tin Man Games announced a project with 2000 AD – an announcement that would cause nerd-muscles to spasm uncontrollably in comic book/gamebook/role playing geeks all over the internet. Judge Dredd is getting his own Gamebook Adventure.

Holy crap.

There are very few details available at this time, what with it being just announced and all, but it’s going to be a Gamebook Adventure. Only set in the Judge Dredd universe and all that. So plenty of choices, equipment, branching paths, dice-oriented combat and so on. About the only specific things I do know is that it’s set to release in “Q2 2012″ for both the iPad and iPhone, and it’ll cost $4.99. There might be some kind of sale at launch if the recent release of Temple of the Spider God is any indication, but that’s pure speculation at this point.

Regardless, this is exciting news! I know I’m looking forward to a tabletop-styled quest through Mega City One. Anyone else?

Extraction: Project Outbreak Review

Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

No confusing controls, no gimmicks, just zombie hunting pure and simple.

When the streets are filled with zombies, fumbling with awkward controls will often make a player easy prey for the shambling masses. There have been lots of zombie and shooting games with great gameplay, and there have been some with clever control schemes. There are even some with oversimplified controls to make them more accessible on the iOS platform. There are, however, a few games here and there that take the best of the shooter genre and combine it with elegantly simple touch controls.

Extraction: Project Outbreak is one of these rare titles. Most shooters are a complex mesh of various mechanics. This often means that the game’s controls must be of an equal complexity in order to allow the player to negotiate the complex mechanics. Unfortunately, iOS devices aren’t particularly well suited to very complex control schemes. What Extraction has done is to find a way to boil down the normally complex shooter controls down to simple commands that can be issued seamlessly with one finger.

This works by assigning different tasks to different kinds of finger actions. Tapping on the screen will make the player’s character move to that position on the screen. The AI pathfinding works really well, so players can tap away at their heart’s content and their character will find the best route without much trouble at all. Swiping the screen selects targets. As zombies make their way to attack, players swipe over them and select them as targets. Multiple targets can be selected and they are attacked in the order that they are selected. What really makes this game play well is being able to begin issuing a new command while the previous command is still playing out. For example, the player can select a destination and the character will begin moving in that direction. While the character is moving, the player can then select targets that the character will attack on it’s way to the selected destination, and vice versa. Other options such as weapon switching and deploying special weapons are controlled by in-evasive onscreen buttons.

The game is comprised of different missions in which players are required to complete different tasks such as killing a certain number on zombies, escorting rescued scientists to safety, or protecting engineers as they repair essential systems. The variation in missions means that players can employ different tactics and the game doesn’t get stale after a few missions. The graphics are some of the best on the iOS platform and the environments are lush and detailed. Add to this the ability to upgrade weapons and unlock powerful allies like automated sentry guns and missile choppers and this game is downright habit forming. It’s hard to find any complaints about this game, and the only one may be that there isn’t more of it to play.

Dog Based Adventures With Tongue Tied

There’s something heart warming about the companionship between two dogs, even if those dogs happen to be attached by the tongue such as Mick & Ralph in Mojo Bones’ first iOS title: Tongue Tied.

Arriving in early December, Tongue Tied follows the exploits of Mick & Ralph as they traverse their way through 50 levels, hoping to eventually retrieve the WonderBone. As the names and concept suggests, it’s going to be a pretty zany ride with an entertaining combination of platforming and physics puzzling.

It promises to include numerous tricks and bonuses to keep things interesting as well as a form of levelling up system, leading to many unlockables. Besides the 50 story levels, there’s also the promise of 30 separate DogHouse levels boosting the replayability of the title.

With a graphical style that clearly takes a few ideas from classic cartoons, I reckon Tongue Tied will be ideal for young and old alike.

Tongue Tied will be out next month. For now, gaze at the gameplay trailer and screenshots below.

Weather Live Review

By
on November 18th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: ATTRACTIVE
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Weather Live is a lusciously attractive way of telling the weather for the next 7 days, as well as many other statistics.

Despite a keen interest in the weather, I’ve never really found a weather app that matches all my needs. That is until Weather Live came along and surprised me.

To say that Weather Live contains all the pertinent information anyone could want from a weather app would be entirely correct. There’s only actually one feature I’d have quite liked to have seen and I’m not entirely sure how possible it’d be: the ability to see what the weather was like on the same day last year. That’s a minor point though in the grand scheme of things as Weather Live has everything else covered.

For any location, Weather Live includes the essentials such as a 7-day weather forecast and a guide to the weather across the hours of the current day. Further detail is provided through a ‘Feels Like’ temperature as well as the actual temperature. Highs and lows for the day is also provided along with humidity, precipitation, visibility and even pressure. Wind direction and speed is also included.

Such statistics would be no use, however, if the presentational aspects of Weather Live were weak. Fortunately, they’re just as strong. Temperatures can be viewed in either Fahrenheit or Celsisus and distances measured in Miles or Kilometers. Setting up numerous locations is easy and users can adjust how much information they can view at any one time.

Visual appearances are great with the app consistently looking pleasant, adjusting to the weather and time of day that it’s loaded during. Further benefits are gained from the ability to view the current temperature via the Home Screen.

Weather Live is a comprehensive yet simple to use Weather app. For those obsessed on seeing how the weather is going to change, this one is pretty hard to beat.

Hellbreak Review

By
on November 18th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: BRUTAL
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Hellbreak might be about escaping the horrors of Down Below, but should it really be this tough?

Developer: Adam Vlcek
Price: $0.99
Version: 1.1
App Reviewed on: iPhone 3GS

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.56 out of 5 stars

Lore throughout the entirety of human history is full of stories of those attempting or succeeding in escaping from The Bad Place. Hell, Hades, The Underworld, whatever it’s been called throughout the centuries it’s obvious that most people don’t much care for the idea of winding up there. So naturally, they’d want to get out. But this is Hell we’re talking about here. It’s not as if someone could just walk out the front door.

Hellbreak wraps the concept of escaping the fate of the damned in the familiar mechanics of reaction-based platforming. The goal of each level is to reach the portal at the top and move on to the next, carefully timing jumps to coincide with gaps that appear in the constantly moving platforms while avoiding all manner of hazards and biting things. It’s the kind of thing one would expect to get very, very difficult as the game progresses, but I must admit I wasn’t entirely prepared for it to get so tough so fast.

Hellbreak uses a very likeable artistic style, somewhat akin to a mixture of illustrations from the Middle Ages and the artwork of Terry Gilliam. The animations are just a little rough in that oddly “right” kind of way that makes them look like drawings awkwardly come to life. The controls are also responsive and simple, and include four different options that cater to a wide range of preferences. Although I stuck with the defaults, personally.

As much as I enjoy the visuals, they can sometimes impede my progress. Mostly it’s the speech bubbles from the devil that taunt players throughout their journey blocking a good deal of the screen. However, I’ve also had trouble with timing jumps as the gaps in the platforms seem offset. I’m not sure how else to describe it, but I’d jump up with the gap directly over me and smack my head on the ceiling. What I ended up having to do was jump before the gap was overhead in order to make it through. It only takes a minute or two to adjust, but it’s odd and it looks weird because the character ends up standing on empty space for a second while the moving ground catches up.

By and large though, my problem with Hellbreak is that it’s so freaking tough. The difficulty doesn’t “ramp up” here, it spikes dramatically. By the fourth level (out of almost 50) I was at my limit. A certain amount of skill (or lack thereof) is most certainly involved, but this felt more than a little excessive.

That’s not to say that people won’t enjoy Hellbreak, though. It’s a well-crafted pick-up-and-play title with plenty of content (45+ levels and 2 different endless modes). It’s just that it’s also incredibly tough. Something that will undoubtedly appeal to some, but not all.

Barry Steakfries, Halfbrick’s erstwhile and versatile wisecracking protagonist, is back in a special re-release of his debut game to take advantage of new iOS features. Age of Zombies Anniversary is especially designed for Retina Display and iPad devices. While the game was universal before, and remains on the App Store as the preferred version for earlier generation devices, the Anniversary Edition’s artwork has been redone for high-resolution screens. This version of the game also supports iCloud for game save and stats syncing across devices. Most importantly, the game has a new Wild West level, which seems awfully overdue for a game involving time traveling and killing zombies in different eras of history. These new levels take place after the regular end of the game, and come with a new survival mode to boot. Most importantly, there’s now a zombie t-rex wearing a party hat. This re-release, for 3rd generation and later devices, is now available at a sale price of $0.99.
