Another World Turns 20, Gets an iOS Port

It’s amazing to think that it’s been almost 20 years since gamers were first tossed into the supremely unfortunate shoes of Lester Knight Chaykin. The brilliant young scientist went and got himself stranded in what might very well be the most hostile alien world ever, and boy was it ever tough to get him to relative safety. Learn from Lester, kids: Don’t mess around with nuclear energy.

For those unfamiliar with the title, Another World (a.k.a Out of the World to US folks) was one heck of a tough adventure game. In fact, it was entirely possible to die (horribly) within seconds of gaining control of the main character. And it didn’t let up much until the credits finally rolled. Poor old Lester seemed to be on everyone and everything’s list.

This month, iOS users will finally be able to experience one of the most beloved (and bemoaned) trial-and-error adventures ever thanks to DotEmu and BulkyPix. However, this isn’t just a straight port. Even long-time fans would do well to check this out once it’s released as there have been a number of interesting additions.

First, there’s the at this point by-the-numbers HD upgrade. Worry not, purists, the visuals can be changed back to their original look at any time. Second, a new “intuitive” touch control system has been developed, but a digital pad option is also available. Third, the music and sound effects have been totally remastered. A bullet point in the press release that admittedly has me a little nervous. Achievements make an appearance as well, naturally. Lastly, and most importantly, there are now three difficulty settings: Normal, Difficult and Hardcore. Difficult is what we old-timers experienced “back in the day,” while Normal is a bit easier and Hardcore is even harder somehow. As someone who has to this day never been able to fight my way to those credits, I’m anxious to try out this so-called Normal mode. Hardcore not so much.

Another World is set to release September 22nd (9/22) for $4.99. That’s $5 I’ll gladly toss into the ether for the chance to play this classic whenever and wherever I want.

Adobe Carousel is a Photo Hound’s Dream

These days, it appears as though everyone has a home computer. It also seems like most people have iPhones. And I always see a surprising amount of people carrying around iPads, too. So it’s not out of the question to imagine that at least some of these folks own two or even all three of these devices. The problem is, in this age of shutter-happy digital photography, it gets a little hard to store all those pictures in one location. Putting them on the phone is a good idea because then they can be shown off at a moment’s notice. Keeping them on the pad makes for easy editing. But then, the computer has a lot more storage space. What to do…

Well, Adobe’s gone and made a reasonable solution to the issue: Adobe Carousel.

For all intents and purposes, it’s basically cloud photo storage. All images will be kept in one spot and will be available on any iOS device with an internet connection. Tweaking a photo from one (i.e. adjusting hues and the like) no longer requires syncing or transferring between systems; the updated image will be viewable by all instantly. Oh, and said editing can be done from inside Adobe Carousel, similar to Photoshop Lightroom. It certainly seems like something the photo-happy iOS user could get a lot of use out of.

Granted, all this convenience and freedom from restrictive storage capacities does have a price. A very literal price. Adobe Carousel will require a subscription which can be either monthly ($5.99) or yearly ($59.99), depending on the user’s preference. Granted this isn’t all that substantial when compared to various other subscription fees, and it has no restrictions so users can import, edit and browse as much as they want.

There doesn’t appear to be a specific release date yet, but according to Adobe’s website it should be out “soon.” Likewise there’s no official word on cost, free or otherwise, aside from the subscription fee. Still, this is an app shutterbugs should keep an eye out for.

iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

FlyBoy attempts to send players on a free-fall journey into the heart of the planet, but is it safer to just stay on solid ground?

Developer: Jelly Pants
Price: $0.99

Version: 1.0
App Reviewed on: iPhone

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

User Interface Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Gameplay Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.13 out of 5 stars

It is time to fall like a stone in a vacuum chamber, or that is what FlyBoy hopes to make the player feel like they are doing. In the ever growing swarm of games that challenge players to climb to the furthest reaches of space, Jelly Pants is going to push gamers into the deepest depths of the earth. The question now is: is this one worth the spelunking hassles, or should players stay on solid ground?

FlyBoy is a free falling game in which the player must navigate an obstacle riddled free fall through various caves, ice filled shafts, or deadly beach abysses. There are plenty of items to aid players along the way, like turning into a ghost to pass through rock bridges, or wings that increase the responsiveness of each life saving maneuver. Each stage comes with its own unique setting, various additional challenges, like roaming birds, and time requirements to move on. The basics of the game is simple enough for anyone to pick up and play, yet tough enough to challenge the hardened gaming veteran.

The game starts to fall apart quickly after pushing start however. On the presentation side, there is not a lot going on. Textures are a bit flat, almost appearing overly stretched out, and this is abundantly clear in stages like the ice cavern level. There is little noise to grace the ears with other than the wind whistling by, and a few sound effects from various items. There is a very pleasing spat noise when the character comes to their instant demise upon hitting an immovable object. Limbs fall off if the character clips anything on their descent down, which is a nice tough. It would just be nicer if there was more to feast the eyes and ears with.

Overall, FlyBoy is a decent start to a game, but not nearly complete enough to warrant an instant purchase. Those looking to give this a try, there are free versions for both the iPad and iPhone – we recommend folks try those out before dropping money on the full game.

iPad Users Take Note: rRootage Online HD Has Gone Universal

rRootage Online HD has given shmup fans quite a bit of love. It’s got lots of shooting, plenty of resulting explosions and a grand total of 160 stages. There are four different game modes included, giving players four different ways to experience the bullet-hell mayhem. It also features the expectant online high scores and, of course, achievements.

Until recently, this was an experience only afforded to iPhone users. Now, after the new 1.3.0 release, iPad users can get in on the action. Yes, rRootage Online HD is indeed a universal app now.

Since I don’t own an iPad myself I can’t really say much of the experience on the larger device, but I imagine the bigger screen makes spotting those pesky enemy projectiles a bit easier. Regardless, it’s nice to see rRootage Online HD getting even more love. It’s bound to please iPad using shmup fans who’ve might have missed it the first time around.

Lazy Frog:
Ever been out walking around and stumble upon a frog so lazy it would not hop away? Well, those lazy frogs have finally found their use in a free game from Chenzo Park. Lazy Frogs is all about catching bugs and staying airborne as long as possible, all with a mere flick of the tongue. As players get better at collecting bugs, more frog types – such as the Ninja, Alien, and Devil – become available. With three game modes to suck away the hours, there is plenty to enjoy, minus all the slime covered hands of fondling a real frog.

Sour Patch Kids: Sour Fling:
These may not be the Sour Patch Kids for eating, but they are suitable for playing. Players will fling these sticky virtual candies across 70 levels of varying difficulties and scenarios. Players will need to collect as many Sour Patch Kids while avoiding enemies like the Gum Monster, a hot light bulb, or even a lake full of juice capable of melting these gummy tykes. This may be just enough to make people want to run out and buy the actual candies the game is based on!

Exitium: Saviors of Vardonia FREE:
Got an itch for some RPG action, but don’t know what to buy to fill that need? Exitium provides just a taste of the sweet nectar of their full game. Players can choose from four playable classes to try to save a land covered in turmoil and war. An extraordinary number of quests and side missions will keep players busy for hours. If this RPG manages to become an addiction, the full game can be unlocked and no progress gets wasted! Go ahead, take a dip in the RPG pool, the water is nice and warm!

Sea Battle – Mission Battleship:
Battleship is a game that requires superior fleet formations and exquisite aiming skills. This classic battle game is once again re-imagined on iOS, and it is free to boot. Players can take on a challenging AI during those long train rides home, or they can challenge friends and settle who will buy the next round of drinks. No matter how the game is enjoyed, it will bring back plenty of memories of laying on the floor yelling out, “You sunk my battleship!” and throwing the game across the room in anger. Try not to throw the iPhone, however, as it is much more expensive!

Word to Word:
Word games continue to evolve, and now a new word association game is ready to grip word smiths. Word to Word is a simple, yet addictive, word association game. Players will need to match two words together. They may be opposites, mean the same thing, or even be compound words. As the puzzles tick away, the word combinations get more challenging with multiple matches becoming the norm, but there is still only one solution to solve the puzzle. No dictionary is necessary, just a good amount of puzzle solving skills!

HypnoBlocks Review

Our Rating: ★★★½☆
iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad

Not content with just two dimensions, this block-matching puzzle game has players looking at all angles.

Developer: Ambrosia Software
Price: $0.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPad 2

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.63 out of 5 stars

Puzzle games like HypnoBlocks work because the concept of matching colorful blocks is inherently satisfying. While that’s fine if a game is content being nothing more than a simple time-waster, extra steps need to be taken if a game wants to stand out. HypnoBlocks has some neat ideas but don’t expect it blow anyone’s mind.

HypnoBlocks’s most unique, and most obvious, quality is that the game is played in 3D space. Each level begins with a floating mass of multicolored cubes and tapping multiple cubes of the same color causes them to disappear. Clear them all before time runs out to proceed.

In theory, one could just stare at one angle of the mass and whittle it down from there but the ideal way to play is to rotate the cubes with one finger and match with the other. It gives the game a distinct rhythm. Cubes are also enclosed in wood cases sometimes preventing the player from seeing what color it is from a certain angle, a smart way to encourage rotation.

There’s a combo system too. Clear blocks without touching spikes or the wrong color and the score is multiplied. Clearing large numbers of blocks helps too but the more blocks selected the shorter the window is to tap more before they are all cleared. That can actually create problems for overzealous tappers who find themselves touching the last green block right after the others were destroyed forcing the game to spawn more and eat up precious time.

That’s pretty much it though. Of course there are leader boards and two more difficulty levels to unlock but this $0.99 game probably has about $0.99 worth of content. The trance music and neon graphics are serviceable but what really matters are the mechanics which are neither amazing nor awful. Apart from it’s 3D twist, HypnoBlocks is as straightforward as puzzle games get.

Keeping track of health data and checkup information for all the family can be pretty tedious. After all, who wants to focus on their ailments all the time? Potentially knowing that knowledge or, more importantly, having that information on hand at all times, could save the life of a much loved family member. As an example, I’m allergic to paracetomol so what happens if I fall unconcious and wind up in hospital in need of painkillers urgently? An app like medAssist will ensure that such allergy information is readily available for any medical professional.

The app offers a place to store simple information such as date of birth as well as more complex and involved knowledge such as allergies, family disease history, blood group, even when the user had surgery or an X-Ray last. Chronic ailments such as joint problems or disease can be stored along with contact details for the family doctor making it easy to check in.

medAssist is one of few apps that could genuinely save lives. At $3.99 that’s a small price to pay.

Amy Solomon over at GiggleApps took a look at My Playhome Monday:

My Playhome is a creative and nicely crafted digital dollhouse for iPad that my son really enjoys. Four rooms are included – a family room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom as well as mom, dad, brother, sister and baby characters. A version for iPhone, Pocket Playhome is also available.

Each room includes objects that the characters can interact with. I like that in the family room, one can switch between cds that play music used throughout this app as background music and one can also turn on the TV to watch a few seconds of muted home video of a family unwrapping gifts – a nice touch. It is also fun that shades can be drawn over the windows to darken the room, and that an aquarium is also included.

Liverpool Tourism Guide Review

By

Our Rating: ★★★☆☆ :: USEFUL
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Liverpool Tourism Guide is useful for visitors to the city despite being a little rough round the edges.

Developer: App Tours UK Ltd
Price: $2.99

Having just come back from a trip to Liverpool, arguably most famous for being the hometown of The Beatles, I was pretty keen to see the arrival of an app that aims to provide a tourist’s guide to the city. Certainly if it had been around before my trip, it would have been a fantastic help even despite its limitations. You see, Liverpool Tourism Guide feels like a work in progress in places compared to other more detailed travel apps, but it still certainly fulfils the role of virtual guide.

The weakest side to the app is also the first section that users will find themselves stumbling across: the See & Do section. Listing a vast array of over 1250 locations initially looks very promising. There’s just enough detail to be of use with a photo of the venue, opening hours, website links and a brief synopsis of the benefits of the place. A tap of a button and Google Maps loads up with a guide of how to get to the location too. That’s about it all though. It all feels a little basic and functional with the addition of more detail or user reviews being noticeably missing. It’s a similar story with the Food & Drink section – varied and encompassing plenty of tastes but lacking much description.

It’s the What’s On and Special Offers section that quickly redeems Liverpool Tourism Guide. It’s still a little basic but the ease in which viewing what events are on at any given time is hugely useful. Special Offers appear to be exclusive to the app adding to the value that comes with Liverpool Tourism Guide.

The Accommodation side of the app offers plenty of choices for where to stay and will certainly come in handy for future visitors to the city. A selection of over 175 audio descriptions for places of interest is a nice touch too with the option of buying either an app that downloads recordings as and when is needed or one that is standalone without the need for a data connection.

Liverpool Tourism Guide clearly needs some more work to make it a must buy app but it’s a good starting point. For a city with such limited travel app options, it makes Liverpool Tourism Guide quite easily one of the better ones to acquire for visitors to this pleasant city.
